My kids are 9 & 11 years old. They did a 5 day class with marine animals. They loved it. They were happy to go back each day. They did not once complain about anything. I was shocked. They said they had so much fun. They learned so much and couldn't wait to explain it all to me when they got home each day. I wished more children are exposed to Biology! Bionerds (such a catchy name - love it) Staff did a wonderful Open House today. It was very interactive and not to mention - Bionerds live up to its name with "Bug Me if You Dare" tshirt design - such a catchy phrase for marketing! We need adult size merch ASAP with 100% cotton material (special request lol)! I'll be the first customer. Children were able to learn about insects and see them crawl LIVE! Shark and Stingray were not. : ) Bionerds staff are like unicorns because they're so good with children and knowledgeable about their teachings. It takes passion to do this. We cannot wait to attend their Field Trip event and attending future classes/camp! It is not often you get to see real shark and stingray being dissected! The class was held after school on Thursdays at our elementary on Thursdays. Microbiology course was broken down into size-able bite size pieces which made it relatable for our kiddo. She looks forward to biology days and we re looking forward to signing her up for more. read more

I had heard great things about Bionerds from my friends whose kids attended summer camp there and so I decided to take my Girl Scout Troop there for a field trip. There ended up being 11 girls for $26 each at the Tustin location. Since we are a Girl Scout Troop (would be the same for Boy Scouts too) the girls each got a patch to put on their Girl Scout Sashes to commemorate the event. BioNerds also offers online classes. Our topic was laboratory equipment and the girls learned about the different types of lab equipment and what they are used for. For the experiment interactive part of the day, the girls each swabbed bucal (cheek) cells with a cotton swab and then made a microscope slide and got to look at their cell and even the nucleus in the cell. There was also an educational powerpoint presentation that was made fun and education for the kids and other experiments including a hand washing "germs" with blacklight experiment and the girls got to use pipettes and syringes and beakers food coloring for another experiment. The main teacher was Janiel (Like Daniel but with a J) and he was OUTSTANDING! You can tell he adores kids and is great with them because he really made learning approachable and fun! Jacinda also took the lead helping on the microscope experiment and she was really great too. I highly recommend BioNerds! I plan to coordinate another Girl Scout Field trip because Bionerds offers soooo many fun topics like: Human Body, Jr Doctors, Let's Dive into the Ocean, Food Science, Dinosaurs, Camping Science, Bugs, Bioengineering, Spooky Science, Plants, Biology, Microscopic World, Land & Water Creatures, Gardening Science, Forensic Science, Decomposers, etc. etc. etc! There are sooo many fun topics that I envision many more fun field trips and I also will totally sign my own kids up for summer camp, after school and other public programs. Completed a full session with them through Saddleback District. Just an updated review, my son finished 8 classes with them with Mr.Joshua. He was fantastic. The focus was on forensic science. My kid was always excited to head over there afterschool. The class was always held in the science lab and there are times the class will go outside to examine plants or whatever is related for the topic of the day. The teacher kept in touch with the parents by emailing the topics that would be covered. It is very hands on and they also have worksheets that is easy for them to follow because of the graphic organizers given to them. One of the most interesting one was looking at DNA and using fresh strawberries and alcohol. So keep in mind to disclose any allergies to the teacher because they get hands on with a variety of ingredients such as cornstarch, flour, sugar, and salt. I did bring up some certain special needs that my kid had and the owner of BioNerd made an effort to really make sure my kid was safe. The teacher also provided photo certificates for the kids on the last day of class. It was very nice! We look forward to more classes in the future. It looks like each 8 week course focuses on different topics. The only cons that I have is the cost of the class. It comes out to about $22 bucks each class. However, it is engaging for the kids. I wish the district can help supplement some of the the cost especially to low income parents or provide some type of scholarship. Other than that, its great! My son loved it! read more

My kids attended some of the Bionerds summer camps and had a great time. Bionerds offer their summer camps in various Irvine community centers, which were all beautiful, clean facilities with playground structures. The class size was about 20 students of various age and there were usually 2 instructors in the class. The camp session lasted 1 week each and there are various topics/sessions in the summer to sign up for, which took place at different locations. They offer half day and full day camp options. Our kids enjoyed the hands-on activities and learned many things. They made yogurt, sourdough bread dough, looked through microscopes, hatched brine shrimp, learned about minerals and gems, made a Solar microwave, etc., and enjoyed meeting and playing with other kids during break. Bionerds offers a very good balance of science information/presentation and hands-on activities and is a great program! read more

My son has been going to after-school classes on campus the last year, and he/we absolutely love it. Each session covers different and very interesting topics. My first grader is so excited to come home and not only tell me some of the cool things he's learned but also to show me what he's created - everything from centrifuged strawberry DNA to homemade natural bug repellent to polished rocks and dusted fingerprints. I look forward to getting Educator Eric's recap email after every class. I end up learning something new myself and also get specific information to pick out and ask my son about so that we can talk about something school-related that doesn't get an "uh, I don't know...nothing" response. I'm so glad we had the opportunity to do this for the school year. We'll definitely sign up again. It's been more than worth it! read more

My five-year-old attended a one week camp in RSM this summer and loved it!! They did biology experiments and learned about things like how to make yogurt, the five senses, and worms and crickets and other animals. Our Bionerds event was awful. Very out of line with other reviews. They lectured a room full of girls for half an hour, showed 20 minutes of boring videos we could have gotten off of YouTube, then had them draw some pictures for 10-15 minutes. Some of it was over their heads but most of it was dull, lazy, and uninteresting for 6-8 year olds. And they kept saying "made by man." All the parents were very disappointed. read more

Amazing team!!! Bionerds put on a Butterfly themed science program for my daughters 10th birthday. They came to the park where we were having the party, set everything up ( including a tv and microscope!) The kids all wore lab coats and gloves and learned about the lifecycle of the butterfly. They were able to interact with real butterflies and each received a caterpillar to take home to care for and turn into a butterfly. The kids were in heaven! We love Bionerds! read more

We've completed our very first Bionerd camp at Irvine today. It was really good, full of biology. Our teacher was David and he was incredibly knowledgeable about the material. I would definitely go back there. Couple of pointers : 1. My child complained about not understanding the teacher very well since he talks too fast. Mr David you are great, but pls don't forget these are kids age 5-12. Would u pls try to talk little slower? 2.Age group for this camp is 5-12 and I really think it should be 7-12 as I really think age 5-6 is too young for this material. They do real dissection, it's not one of those pretend camps. It's a real biology camp. 3.I was talking to a couple of other moms and we all agree that this is a long day camp. So they should eat well for whole day. However their snack, recess time doesn't give enough time for kids to eat well...They take a break to eat at 10:30 am 12:00pm and 2:30pm...We were all complaining about how they don't eat the food we gave to them...Pls consider chaning these hours so they can eat better. 4.Lab fee 95$ is little too high...This is on top of te 295 camp fee.So tthe total is 395$ Thnx over all read more

I am so glad I took a risk in signing up my kids for BioNerds bacteria camp! The curriculum is well designed and instructors are engaging. Both my 1st and 4th grader were excited to attend class each morning (for a week). All students were treated like scientist they got to wear lab coats and did hands-on experiments. I was amazed that my kids could explain what they learned each day (the camp was on bacteria) and they had so much excitement about their new knowledge. My kiddo has enjoyed e sessions of bionerds with Mr David. From dinosaurs to DNA, the material is complicated enough to keep the bigger kids bugging out, while the littles stay engaged too. The classes I have sat in are structured with lecture, video, hands on, then a craft. My 6 year old loves it and comes running every week and never wants to miss it. It is spendy with the additional laboratory fees, but the insect class made it worth while with insects coming home every class. read more

Bionerds' Insects Summer Camp is literally the best camp my kids have ever attended! Boy, 7 and Girl, 9 equally loved every minute at Bionerds in Ladera Ranch. So educational, so hands on, and so super fun! They studied all sorts of bugs throughout the week, at least two different bugs each day, and brought a little "friend" home every day to care for and learn more about. Everything from a caterpillar (turned butterfly), crickets, roly polys, to lady bugs. They learned from hands-on lessons, digital microscopes, crafts, dissections, etc. Just fantastic and so interesting and engaging for both of them. As soon as I picked them up each day, they would both say they could not wait to come back and each morning they were ready to go, waiting for me in the car, so excited to go to camp - that has never before happened.
