Five stars, easy. We found Biosphere when we needed our front steps completely rebuilt, and we are so glad we did. Bill and Grayce guided us through the planning process and made the whole thing stress-free -- great communication, realistic timelines, and beautiful results. The work they did on the steps was so impressive that when it came time to tackle the landscaping in our front yard, there was no question who we were calling. They brought the same level of care and craftsmanship to that project too. It's rare to find a company you trust so completely that you just keep coming back -- Biosphere has earned that with us. Five stars isn't enough. Our front steps had been an absolute abomination for 13 years, and I was determined to finally get them done right. I vetted six different contractors before landing on Biosphere, and they stood out immediately for one simple reason: they were the only ones who showed up with an actual drawing of what we were going to get. They listened to our vision, hit every aspect of it, and on top of that came in with the fairest price for the scope of work. The execution was meticulous and the finished steps are nothing short of a masterpiece. It's now four months since completion and I've lost count of the compliments from neighbors and visitors. Our house finally has the grand entrance it deserved. We were so happy with the steps that a few weeks ago we hired them again to completely overhaul the front planting beds on either side. Once again, they knocked it out of the park. Even better, when inspiration struck them mid-project they went above and beyond the original drawing and added several superb touches at no extra charge. That kind of pride in the craft is rare. Grayce and Bill are an absolute pleasure to work with -- respectful, genuinely talented, and they take the time to understand both your vision and your budget. We're already getting ready to contract them for a third project: a full build-out of our back patio. If you're on the fence about who to hire, stop vetting and just call Biosphere. read more

Bill was very responsive and visited our home quickly to look at yard and possibilities and was very positive on how great it would look. There were several visits with well produced visualizations. You pay for these visits and productions and all were promptly paid . Dates were promised and pushed back for a begin date. Then a request to have a final walk through- here was spotted issues. We heard well we can start and see what happens?. What about the multi thousands for professional depictions we paid and now it maybe can't be done... We lost a lot of money and 6 months time . Hired someone new and work is in progress . Never used pictures as they did not even include topography displays . Be very careful . read more

I have read the reviews on Yelp regarding Biosphere. I would say that is not my experience and I am sorry that they did not have the same experience we have had, which was excellent. We first used Bill over 20 years ago to design the landscaping in our garden. We contacted him for a refresh and to solve some water issues we had. The solution he came up with has worked perfectly and we are not having any of the problems anymore. He has gone beyond the expectations with creative solutions to our problems. The team doing the work was excellent. I find he is capable of taking my wants and wishes and working with them to create a wonderful environment. I also think that sometimes, especially with outdoor jobs like this, there are things that come up that may delay the work, but do not hold that against any of our contractors, that is part of the business. We have been very happy with the work that Bill and his company has done for us. read more

I hired Mr. Boyce and Bisophere to help with a town variance. I was quoted a price of $4,500 and agreed. However, at some point Mr. Boyce determined the contracted work was complete but contined to call, set up appointments, discuss changes to the project and his new ideas only to begin billing me an additional $5,000 a month. I was a little surprised the first month but paid his bill. I even paid the second month's for a total of $14,500 on a $4,500 job. The third month I asked for a breakdown of the charges. After a lengthy chase he finally provided a breakdown. According to my math, he and each of his employees would have to spend 5-6 hours a day, everyday, solely discussing my small project to justify his new monthly invoices. When confronted with hard math, Mr. Boyce sheepishly backed down and said he would do a better job going forward. After some time passed I gave Mr. Boyce a second chance. Another mistake. I needed trees planted in my backyard in order to comply with the variance. I asked for a guarantee on the trees but he insisted one wasn't needed, that the trees would do great. 15 of the 17 died within a year. I asked him to come back to discuss a fair resolution but he would only agree to 'get me a good deal' on some new trees. His quote amounted to a 2.5 times mark up for plainting the trees which should have been about $5,600. Ultimately he didn't plant all of the trees on his bill and the bill was $8,000. Again, much higher than he quoted. I tried several times to resolve the issue with him. His reponse was that I was "being mean". Mr. Boyce is unprofessional and incredibly immature. read more

Mr. Boyce, at first, seemed very professional. Unfortunately, this was hardly the case. First, I hired Mr. Boyce and Biosphere for a job. After completion of this first job, I hired the company to help improve our home's drainage system. Unfortunately, when billed for the second job, I realized that I was being charged twice the amount that I was originally quoted. When I questioned Mr. Boyce about the discrepancy, he explained that it is difficult to notify his clients of changes in the quote. While I didn't agree with him, I felt that he had put his hard work into the job and I paid him... On time as I always do. I did, however, explain to Mr Boyce that I would hope in the future that he would be more communicative in any changes in his quotes.... Especially if there was such a dramatic difference. When I discussed possibly hiring Biosphere for a 3rd job, I told one of Biosphere's other employees, Paul, that I would appreciate a firm quote. I explained that because there had been a discrepancy in the quote and charges with the previous job, I had felt "snake bitten," and that I did not want that to happen again. After waiting several weeks for a quote from Paul and hearing nothing, I reached out to Mr. Boyce for an answer. It was at this time that I was informed that Mr. Boyce was deeply insulted by my comment that I felt "snake bitten," and that he could no longer do business with me. I can only say that as a professional, this kind of behavior is extremely immature, insensitive and unprofessional. While I have no interest in having anything else to do with Biosphere, I am insulted by this treatment as a client and would warn any future customers to be prepared to deal with this self righteous individual. Let me also state that in all my life, I have never before felt compelled to write a negative review for anyone. read more

As per the opinions of other reviewers here, initially, I had a very favorable impression of Biosphere's Mr. Boyce - he seemed intelligent, environmentally attuned, and congenial. I enjoyed conversing with him about our organization's project, which involved planting native plants in and along a stream in a public park in Emerson, NJ - to restore it and help control erosion. I run a small and well-challenged, mostly volunteer-run watershed protection organization and we work very hard for every donation and grant dollar. The stream restoration project was funded by a small grant and Mr. Boyce and I had come to agreement via written contract about what work was to be done and how much it would cost for the specific tasks. We should not have paid in advance for Biosphere's services. Unfortunately, throughout our time working together, it was often near impossible to get Mr. Boyce to call back or to respond to emails. He and his staff eventually did a significant portion of, but not all, of the labor for which we had contracted - and paid - them. They did a decent job but were very sensitive to some questions. I tried to get our understanding back on track, but, due to the constant communications problems, I ended up informing Mr. Boyce that we would regretfully need to terminate our agreement. Last October, Mr. Boyce agreed that he owed my non-profit for not having done several watering tasks at the project site. He owed us $675, which is no small change for our modest organization. From then until last week, I logged many calls and emails to him and his administrator requesting the refund, eventually writing a formal letter of request. In response, the administrator would sometimes call or email me back, essentially asking me to wait to hear from her again...and again... I respected the excuses provided to a point, but they kept coming. I have now informed Biosphere that I will be involving my attorney and going to small claims court to attempt to collect what they owe us. I need to complete my grant-funded stream restoration project this spring, and the missing funds need to help pay for the next - and hopefully more responsive and responsible - landscape professional that we hire. Mr. Boyce's website is out of date as far as the memberships that he claims to have in several landscape contractor trade organizations. I've also discovered several other negative online reviews. He does not appear to keep his word. This has been an unwelcome and trying experience. We have been working hard to steward the local environment for 30 years, and strive to find others in the ecological landscaping field who will work collaboratively, rather than causing heartburn and a hole in the wallet.
