This place is great. Both the food and the service was top notch. Next year when we bring our son back to WSU this will be on our list

I agree with the other reviewer, it's a bar and grill with nicer atmosphere and of course longer waiting time for your food. I've been there multiple times and even in hours with no crowd, still waiting time is too long. Food is average and service is acceptable. read more

We had dinner here on a Friday night. It's got some cute decor but the acoustics are horrid. It was so incredibly LOUD. It's a giant wide open space literally-- a barn. Our waiter was super nice and good at his job. We had the Caesar salad- one topped with blackened salmon and one with grilled salmon and my husband had the Etouffe. We had the pretzels as an app. They were just ok. More of a bread stick than a pretzel and the cheese dip was bland. The salads were also just ok. The lettuce was wilty and kind of old. The dressing was fine. The grilled salmon was excellent. The blackened salmon was bland but cooked well. The Etouffe wasn't like any we've ever had or seen, including in New Orleans. It was super rich and creamy. Too heavy. We had a tasty grapefruit mojito. The Rousanne on tap wasn't chilled enough. My husband had an amber house beer that was superb. I wouldn't return to this restaurant. It was just ok and too loud. read more

Overall, I had a very good experience at Birch and Barley's. The waitress was very nice and attentive, and offered to provide explanations for the food. The wait wasn't too terribly long, and the food was delicious. I myself had the tomato basil soup with grilled crostini's filled with the famous local cougar gold cheese. All of my food was fresh and tasty. The entire ambiance of the restaurant was very clean and modern-rustic. Overall, 5 stars! I will be returning here during the semester :) read more

Came for dinner on a Wednesday, and it was packed. We got what was apparently the only non-reserved seat in the joint. Nevertheless, our server was very attentive, and the food came out very quickly. The beer list had a nice style/quality spread, and the cocktails looked good, although we didn't try any. I ordered the gumbo, which was very good. A hearty portion with good, crusty bread to mop up with. It was spicy enough to make my nose run, but not enough to set my mouth on fire. Quite nice, and definitely satisfying for the $14 I payed for it! My partner got the pan seared herbed chicken. Similarly priced, and the flavor was great, but the skin was a bit on the spongy side. Disappointing, but certainly not enough to spoil the meal. The desserts looked good, but we didn't have room. My one complaint would be that the main dining area has very high ceilings, so when the restaurant's busy it can be a little loud. That said, still a welcome addition to Pullman's dining options! read more

This place is terrible. I've eaten here twice and didn't like it either time. First time, I had the blackened Salmon and it took all I had to try and eat it. As, it was so salty that it made it hotter than it really was as well. I eat all kinds of food and can tolerate a lot. I rarely ever turn away food, as I love food. I even told my wife how bad it was. My wife on the same night, had a bad experience with her prime rib. She ordered it medium rare and it came out well done. They said that the Chef would cook it himself, so it would come out medium rare. For one, prime rib can't be cook at the time of order. It's always roasted ahead of time. Now, the second time it was rare and it was all cold. We let the server know, and they sent out the Chef to speak with us. The Chef apologized for the mistake again and proceeded to ask how we would prepare it. I'm not sure about you, but shouldn't a Chef know how to prepare it in the first place. It didn't make sense to us, that a Chef would even ask this question. In any case, we wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. It's not worth the money for bad food. Now, we would definitely go back for their mixed drinks, as they know how to make those. read more

Went here about six weeks after it opened hoping it had gotten the kinks out by then. It had not. Ordered the crab cakes and they came to the table a soupy mess. Also got the shrimp poboy. Birch and Barley is a fun place. I like their deck. They offer a lot of drink options. I tried the Cougar Gold cheese burger and fries and enjoyed it. I like the feel of the place and atmosphere. I would like to try more items on the menu. read more

I love this place - a great outdoor deck, excellent pretzel bread sticks, a good beer selection, and friendly servers. I recommend the Cougar Burger, the black bean wrap, and the Cajun fries. The pretzel mustard is good on almost everything, so get a side of that if you like mustard. Also, the mug club is a fantastic value. Highly recommend. read more

What started out as a terrible experience ended as a memorable one. The waitress and manager went above and beyond to make up for any inconvenience and they really made up for it. The food is definitely unique and the staff here really cares about the diner's experience from start to finish. Definitely try the lobster Mac & cheese or the cougar burger! My wife and I have had two dinners so far and both have been outstanding. The food is fresh, the service is good, and the atmosphere is pure Palouse. If you just want to test the waters I recommend the spinach artichoke dip. They have a great drink menu, topped in my opinion with the Moscow Mule. read more

I wouldn't know how the food was. I took my girlfriend there and was never even greeted by a server for over 15 minutes. There was a server that talked to the table next to us 3 times without even acknowledging our existence. I figured that if they didn't want to take the time to serve 2 guests then it wasn't worth our time so we left. Looks like the experience my 4 friends and I had was very similar to this place, so I'll keep my review short: PROS- LOVE the atmosphere and design, very modern, comfortable and friendly. The wait staff is excellent. Everything has nice little touches, including the receipt delivery. They have a very good theme and the food looked very nice. CONS-For the price the food was NOT what I wanted. My friends and I think that maybe the lead chef isn't totally experienced? There were flavor's sure, but they weren't really well done, like they just didn't get INTO the food, I hope that makes sense. Food breakdown: Salmon had a tasty surface but the meat was bland. They lentil salad that the salmon was on top of tasted like spoonfuls of basil (I think that's the herb I tasted). And the green beans looked good but were really meh. Lobster Mac was simply not saucy enough. The noodles didn't contain any flavor and it looked like my dish was sitting for a while, all the sauce had pooled in the bottom of the bowl and the lobster was chewy. When I finally got to the sauce it was pretty good, but south fork has way better cougar mac. 2 beers, salmon, and mac cost $50 total and was simply not worth it. The Penne from Heaven was overwhelmed with artichoke flavor. There were several flavors but they weren't really... unified? $20, no drinks. OVERALL I really really wanted to love this place, but I have to love the food to return, especially for the price. We were all just underwhelmed and disappointed. read more

I have been here a couple of times. The food is okay. They mainly loose points for me because of the experience I had when I took my parents here for dinner. The dinner was fine, our waiter was nice but they sat us in a booth with a ridiculously high step. When we finished our meal my poor Mom mis-judged the step and went falling to the floor. My complaint is with management because the manager saw the whole thing and didn't step in to help us lift her up or ask if she was okay. The manager just hid and I could see her looking but she did nothing- rude. Especially, since the place was dead, there was probably only 15 people in the whole place. So between lack-luster food and poor management skills, I will not be back. read more
