We attended a musical at the Bird in Hand Theater the evening before and had stayed at the BIH Suite which is a magnificently resort hotel from 1852 but that's a review of its own. We were provided a $20 certificate toward breakfast at the Bakery and we're pleasantly surprised. It was a Saturday morning in late November and tourists abounded. Kaitlyn, the pretty young woman explained that they were short 3 workers and that today was her 3rd day, but didn't say it whining. Service was understandably slower, but the food was quite tasty, and even after each ordering a hefty breakfast, we only owed $3 and some change after redeeming our $20 voucher. Staff is friendly and hardworking. Place is huge with 2 floors. We ate in the nice dining area on the second floor. I loved the whoopie pie ice cream. It was pieces crushed whoopie pie in delicious ice cream. You got pieces of whoopie pie in each and every bite . Delicious and sweet! The red velvet whoopie pie is also a must try! This review is for the bakery. I stopped in yesterday morning at the end of my visit to buy baked goods to take home. I was surprised when the loaves of cinnamon raisin bread I picked up were cold and wet on the bottom, and I asked if they'd been frozen. The response was yes. I bought them anyway after deciding I didn't have time to go anywhere else, but regret it. At a visit earlier in the week I asked if I could place an order for Friday morning pickup and was told no, there would be plenty of product available that morning. Where I come from bakeries and grocery stores with bakeries do not freeze products. Products are baked daily and anything not sold is donated at the end of the day - even Costco bakes everything fresh daily! When touring the countryside I saw several farm stands at the end of driveways offering baked goods. I'll try those next time. Very, very disappointed. read more

Lots of fresh baked pies, breads, canned goods and especially whoopie pies. Several made to order sandwiches and wraps are available, and the ice cream sundaes are a favorite of my boys. The selection here is far more limited than the either the restaurant at the Family Inn or the lunch counter at the Farmer's Market, but they are generally less crowded and provide a much faster turn around at similar prices. This isn't a spot I'd go out of my way to travel to, but I wouldn't hesitate to stop in if I saw a bus or two across the street. read more

Living in the near boondocks south of Atlanta, I've been having a hankering for shoo fly pie, so I ordered a pair and had them delivered. The service was amazing ordering through the app and they arrived today. It was amazing, I shared it with my fellow teachers and staff (absolutely no one had ever heard of shoo fly pie) and everyone had nothing but compliments! Quite simply, both were devoured in no time. This review is for the baked items only. We had had a lovely breakfast at the Inn where we were staying so stopped in for a mid-morning snack. Wanted to try the whoopie pie and the Shoefly pie. We bought a pumpkin whoopie pie and it was heavy in the hand so we expected it to be a heavy dessert, we couldn't have been more wrong. The pumpkin cookies were soft and flavorful and the filling surprisingly light and not too sweet. The shoefly pie was a different story, we bought a miniature one for the two of us to share. Mr. B took one bite and said the rest is yours. I took a bite and eh, it wasn't terrible, it was okay, but pretty dry and not a lot of flavor. It was disappointing. The bakery was listed in a book I have titled Food Journey's of a Lifetime, and based on the book, reviews and word of mouth from others who highly recommended the bakery, we weren't that impressed. This is a charming bakery café located across the street from Bird in hand farmer's market on Old Philadelphia Pike. Among their baked goods there are whoopie pies, cookies, cakes, breads especially cinnamon raisin (can be iced) and various homemade pies including shoofly pie made fresh. They also have a gift shop area where you can buy a small assortment of Amish goods including cookbooks. I purchased a loaf of the cinnamon raisin bread and checked out the pies. They had a small Dutch apple pie which I learned can be frozen and heated directly from that state. The counter lady explained she would provide instructions as to how to wrap it properly for freezing and the fact that there are no preservatives in it. It looks so good and when I got it home it tastes just as good as it looks! On the other side of the bakery itself is a small café where you can buy various sweet goods as well as breakfast or lunch to eat either there or take out. Prices are very reasonable. They also sell their own ice cream. They have additional seating upstairs. I was interested in the apple fritters. Learning that I could save a little money if I got the larger size I got one of those to split. Believe me this sweet treat is to die for! This is a great shop to visit if you don't want to go off the beaten path to look for delicious Amish made baked goods. Definitely worth a return visit when in the area. read more

I spotted a small bakery / restaurant on the main road and thought that it would be a good place for lunch. Let me just tell y'all that it was pretty awesome. While the small bakery / restaurant does have its modern conveniences, it serves up ice cream too. It's basically a one stop shop for anything you'd want to eat - well, for a bakery and ice cream shop. They do mainly assorted sandwich combos in the main area of the shop and the ice cream parlor and bakery sections at the other two ends of the building. It is an efficient way of doing things this way in Bird In Hand, Pennsylvania. I guess I was in the right place at the right time. It was a spur of the moment decision in a small rural town of Bird In Hand. And it worked out good. I found one of the best eggplant parmigiana type sandwiches I've had in a while! For the most part though, I found myself here just because I wanted to see Amish country. It was good to see that some parts of the town had modern conveniences, like electricity, refrigeration, and credit card machines. You know, 21st century stuff. They accept major credit cards, which is amazing - given where they are but you never know with businesses nowadays. Parking options are easy, although, I found parking across the street and walked over. Just be careful about the traffic coming and going and you should be alright. You best believe that you should have your own car or even a rented one. Not sure if public transportation options are viable here, even Amtrak too. Uber can be problematic as it's a long way from a major city. As mentioned before, I ordered a eggplant Parmesan style sandwich. But as a combo, it came with chips and a medium drink. The prices here were a little bit higher than what I am used to in the big city, but you're in rural central Pennsylvania and hungry for a meal. Not much options to choose from though. I must say that it was one of the best eggplant parmigiana style sandwich I've had in quite a while! The other type is at an Italian restaurant, usually with pasta as the carbohydrate of choice. I did enjoy the melted cheese and the smoothness of the eggplant that just became one with each other. The chips were good too, which came handy when I had the Diet Coke for the drink of choice. It was a take out experience that seemed to drag on for 20 minutes, but the lady at the counter apologized for the lateness of the order. Thought that was cool. Whether you are here for the Amish country experience or just traveling through, you can get lunch and ice cream here at the Bird In Hand Bakery & Cafe. I would recommend this place, even though there are possibly more options in town, but I doubt it. I just saw this one across the street where I was and made a snap decision. Which turned out to be the best ever. I didn't get to go on an Amish hay ride that day, but I got to see 2 Amish buggies while in town. I saw some reviews on this and really wanted to go. I had the Rachel turkey sandwich. It was grilled like a panini and it had coleslaw on it. Yum. Soo good. My husband had chili. He said it was awesome too. We also got an apple fritter and a whoopie pie. I loved the apple fritter and I generally don't care if them because they are too greasy. This one was not at all greasy. My husband prefers the greasy ones. The Whoopie pie is 2 cakeish cookies with whipped cream between them. It was good but didn't live up to my expectations. We also got to sample shoofly pie. I've lived in Lancaster my entire life but have never visited in person. I try to avoid the Amish/Mennonite touristy type places and pretty much anything out that way falls under that category. But I turned to them recently when I wanted to send a taste of Lancaster Co to someone out of state. Shoo fly pie is a Lancaster staple, although I don't care for it I know it's intriguing to someone that didn't grow up with it. The recipient was one of those people and I wanted it to be as authentic as possible. I called around to a few local bakeries inquiring about shipping a shoo fly pie. All but Bird in Hand shipped frozen and charged an arm and a leg. One in Leola also charged a $5.99 on top of the high shipping charge because "someone would have to take it to the post office". While I was concerned about freshness upon arrival I also didn't want her to get a soggy pie when it thawed out, or something that required baking. A flaky crust and the brown sugar crumble topping are the best parts and I don't see how you could keep the integrity if it's frozen. Bird in Hand does not ship frozen, they said their pies are good un-refrigerated for up to 30 days. Shipping is sent priority mail to be delivered in 2 days max, with tracking. Shipping and the price of the pie was very fair. Customer service was good, although I did have some problems with my payment going thru their online payment system. For that reason I had to call to make sure everything went thru ok. The gal I spoke with was very considerate of the dilemma and even kept in touch via email to ensure me that everything went thru correctly. As a courtesy at my request they even sent tracking information to the recipient. When you order online you also have the option of enclosing a personal message. While their payment system was defective, online ordering and on the phone customer service was fast and efficient.
