We stopped at Dutch Haven after lunch across the parking lot, drawn in by the windmill, which stands like a beacon for travelers aong Route 30 and the mildly curious. It is the sort of landmark that promises something memorable, or at least something sweet. Inside, the place leans heavily into its role as a stop-off for visitors. Shelves are filled with faux-Amish goods, hex signs, and a cheerful assortment of bric-a-brac, along with shirts that seem very proud of nearby towns with names that invite, shall we say a certain kind of humor. It feels less like a bakery and more like a general store that wandered into a theme. The people working there are genuinely kind, and generous with samples, which is always a wise and welcome strategy. We tried a bit of the shoo fly pie, and in the past we've tried some cookies, root beer, and ice cream. They were all perfectly fine. Pleasant, even. But they did not distinguish themselves from the many other places in Lancaster County offering the same treats with equal or better competence. Nothing here is bad. In fact, it is all quite enjoyable in the moment. But it is not something I would go out of my way for again. Far less so when the tourist busses are around. I visited Dutch Haven expecting a more authentic "Dutch" experience, but it felt very generic and more like a themed imitation than anything genuine. The atmosphere didn't really deliver on the Dutch concept in any meaningful way. The pretzel was especially disappointing--dry, bland, and honestly not enjoyable. Nice place to visit to get a good slice of shoo fly pie. It's really good here. The service is friendly. They will give you samples of pie heated in the microwave with the whipped cream. It was excellent! Lois was great and really put a lot of whipped cream on the slice I bought. It's not so easy to find something to do on a Sunday in the area, so this is a great place. You can find souvenirs, cookies, lemonade, and homemade root beer. It's a fun place with a big windmill. Lois was really nice and gave me a booklet with information on what else is open on Sunday. They sell it by the slice or as a regular pie. I also saw pumpkin & apple pie for sale. We had fresh warm homemade pretzels there that were delicious as well. While wandering around the shop, the elderly shopkeeper suddenly approached me with a small sample of shoo-fly pie, which was so nice of her. I was happy to get a chance to try it without having to buy a slice because I'm not much of a pie person. However, the pie tasted good, like a brown sugar sweet pie. I ordered an Amish root beer as I was curious about how it differed from commercially canned root beer. It lacked carbonation, had a stronger bark root taste, and wasn't too sweet. We stopped in and were told they were in the process of closing. So, their gift shop items were on sale. We found a few things to purhase and then decided to grab two pies to go. The pies were good. Better than the dark gummy versions you find at many locations. We took the pies home warm, gave one to my parents, and we all enjoyed them the next day and the next day and the next day. While in Lancaster my husband had to try this raved about "Shoo-Fly" pie. Upon entering we were greeted with a small slice of pie. You can't stand there and eat it, they make sure to tell you to walk away from the pie area to try out the sample. The shoo-Fly pie is very good. It has a strong taste of nutmeg and sorta like the flavors of a sweet potato pie. I honestly don't like pie but my husband does so we had to try it. Although they didn't seem Amish at all, they were somewhat pleasant but definitely more overpriced compared to other local shops. All in all it was okay, I felt a little sense of uneasiness but that was expected given others previous reviews. I purchased 2 pies and a few items and left. What a cute spot with friendly service, a fun store, and a yummy shoo-fly pie. Also, the restaurant is so cute from the outside, with a big windmill. There's outdoor seating so you can enjoy your pie with some sunshine as well. I enjoyed the shoo-fly pie very much. I did not, however, love the root beer. It tasted very different from what I'm used to for root beer, which I understand might just be an Amish thing to make it this way and while it may be good to many, it just wasn't for me. I saw a few reviews about rude service, but I didn't have that experience at all. They were very nice and gave me a sample of the pie before buying any. I have been eating quite a bit of it on my recent visits to PA and I like it quite a bit―but it is important to note I do like the taste of molasses. Dutch Haven is the preeminent place to get some Shoo-fly in this part of the country, as they are located in a very touristy part of central PA along with a bunch of other Amish tourist-traps. However, despite the appearance of a tourist trap this place is anything but one! Immediately upon entering we were greeted with a small sample of their famous Shoo-fly pie by the friendly shop-keeps, and it was delicious. Which was good because that was exactly what we came for! Before purchasing said pie, we did admire their selection of gifty "antiques" and tchotchkes and were surprised at their very reasonable prices.Pie was a very reasonable $12/10" and we grabbed one and were on the way. Dutch Haven's Shoo-fly might be my favorite rendition of this Dutch classic, as the crumb was soft and not sandy as some can be, and I loved the good strong molasses flavor. It is odd that they don't put any extra molasses in the pie beyond what's in the brown sugar, but it didn't lack for flavor. Also, it is worth noting that based off the ingredient list for the standard Shoo-fly that theirs is VEGAN due to a lack of eggs and butter. This is also probably what makes their pies shelf-stable and capable of being shipped worldwide! Highly recommended when visiting Amish country to stop-into Dutch Haven for some pie, good prices and some friendly service on the side. read more

10/28/2023. They are OPEN with the original owners and the ORIGINAL SHOE FLY PIE. I personally visited today. They are trying to be more open hours but currently have limited staff. I have been a frequent visitor for 60+ years even when they were a restaurant back in the early 60's. You can stroll through the store and find a tourist souvenir, if you'd like. I am happy they are making a go of it. If the pie is not to your liking, no problem, all food is not for everyone just don't be a hater to the staff. read more

My husband and I came here to try and find this delicious pancake mix but unfortunately they didn't have it. I was about to buy a slice of there famous shoe- fly pie but one of the guys at the counter said oh you guys will need to park your stroller outside , once we heard that we just decided to leave. There was someone esle in there with a stroller. We both didn't like the streto-typing inside. The other thing that I didn't like was the guy behind the counter ran up and immediately handed us a sample of the pie which was a bit obsession, what if we didn't want the pie or had a allergy. Dutch Haven Shoo-Fly Pie Bakery is two stores rolled into one. One being of souvenirs, oddly referenced by the Amish as being "tchotchkes," along with all sorts of jellies, honey, apple butters and varying preserves with the other being a bakery. The key item of the bakery is, of course, the Amish or Pennsylvania Dutch and locally famous shoo-fly pie. If you've never had shoo-fly, you should and this is the place to get yourself some of the best. Shoo-fly, a molasses based pie, comes in two versions, the "wet bottom" and the "dry bottom." The only differences are that the dry bottom is fully cooked with a cake like consistency while the wet bottom has a top of crumbs with the bottom somewhat without a true crust leaving it with a thick sticky gooey consistency. Both are good though I must confess I personally favor the wet bottom. The shop is well arranged, orderly, and spotlessly clean with a super friendly as well as informative help staff. So besides being the place to pick up your shoo-fly pie, it's also the place to ask about anything local or to get any information you may want about the Pennsylvania Dutch Country or the Amish. On the funny side, it's rather hilarious to see Dutch Haven with a Dutch windmill on top and everything about it indicating Dutch when Amish and the Pennsylvania Dutch are all actually German and really have nothing to do with the people of Netherlands. Seems the whole "Dutch" thing just got going as the rest of us either couldn't pronounce the word Duetsch (meaning German) or somehow mistook Duetsch for Dutch; but then I even note that my spellchecker is making the same mistake. I was watching my grandchildren while my wife shopped. I made sure they didn't pickup anything unless I knew it won't break and I let them a few metal pencil sharpeners. The owner came over and asked me if I was the Kid Cop. I said, no I am their Grandfather. He said no you are a Kid Cop. I asked what that is. He said its when the parent is worse than the kids with them. Then he told me that I was not their grandfather because I didn't look old enough. I walked away and he followed me around the store, directly behind me. He then told my wife that her mask needed to cover her whole nose. We left and won't be back. read more
