Disappointing experience based on basic lack of customer service, sense of humor or knowledge of guidance towards the desired product at the right price. No depth or interesting suggestion - just a basic - pointing in the physical right direction. Who would expect help from the owner? Or is that too much to ask? This is aside from the prices being off base; since the owner has placed himself in an affluent community he completely takes advantage of the clientele. On top of this, and most importantly is that he is rude and cannot see the larger picture of a simple customer request. I would never send anyone here just because it's convenient and has a facade of being a charming place to buy and taste wine. read more

I came in here a couple weeks ago looking for a specific Bordeaux red that I have been trying to track down ever since I came back from my last trip to France. I called and searched pretty much all of the wine shops in the San Diego area to no luck. Ken tracked down the wine for me and got it in my hands within a week or so! Beautiful little shop, with just about any wine to suit your fancy (and price point!). I wandered into this business around noon today and although I had no intention of purchasing or tasting any wine, the owner was extremely friendly and helpful. I ended up purchasing a few wooden wine boxes-- they are so useful and apparently extremely popular for all sorts of DIY projects. While I feel a little guilty about writing a review for purchasing wine boxes and not wine, Ken's friendly disposition and helpfulness warrants it. We only visited once, but I'm sure I would be a regular if I loved in La Jolla. They got me 3 excellent bottles to try during my visit, and the tasting looked affordable and really well organized. If I had a kvetch, it looked to me that the $20 world was undeserved in the store's selection, but there's always the supermarkets if that's what you want. This guy does a great job for a small shop. He has a really good palate and brings in what he respects. Some very unusual things along with some small production stuff. If I lived right here and was still buying a bunch of wine, I would buy from him a lot. Just drinking the cellar these days and not much need to buy, so have only bought a couple of times. I canot say say enough positive things about this boutique wine shop, its owner Ken, and the staff who helps out. The wine selection is absolutely "crafted" to represent interesting, regional and global wines at very reasonable price points. But it goes beyond with the knowledge of the owner. We stopped in over the weekend to talk about food parings. Ken had several suggestions to pair with the main course and then we evolved into a port a chocolate tasting for dessert. Needless to say, from the champagne and appetizers through the port extravaganza the wines were incredible - and FUN! Each wine was "important" becasuse Ken had helped select them, perfectly. As a wine lover, I am so impressed with this place. They offer a great selection of wines across varietals, regions, and price points. My husband and I travelled to Switzerland about 3 years ago and fell in love with the table wine there. We never knew Switzerland had such a great wine region - everyone always talks about French and Italian wine, so we were pleasantly surprised. When we returned to America, we had such a hard time finding Swiss wine at our local liquor store and grocery stores. That's when we reached out to Bird Rock Fine Wine. We live in the area and had never popped into this place, and I'm so glad our hunt for Swiss wine brought us here. The associate was so helpful, accommodating, and kind. They had a few different Swiss wines at different price points and from different areas of Switzerland to choose from. We ended up getting a Swiss wine from Roh vineyards (about $30) and it was delightful. We have been back a few times to get this bottle.
