They have a pretty interesting selection of whiskeys, and the owner was very helpful in picking out something fun. Unfortunately, I discovered that the bottle I picked had a bad cork after I got home. Dicks made it right and in a very hassle-free way! I was able to return the bottle and exchange it for something else. The only reason for 4/5 instead of 5/5 is that their prices aren't the best. The prices are not crazy bad, like some other places in the area, but they aren't really competitive either. read more

Stopped at Don Carlos to get a burrito and then here for Rum. I've probably done the same thing 3 times in the last year or two. Every time the guys in the store or behind the counter have been super cool and helpful. Today I went inside with my food and had liquor in hand. The guy behind the counter was busy helping someone else and I decided to put the bottle back and leave. He ran outside and accused me of shoplifting. I held up my bag of burritos and said it was just food and I put the booze back. He told me to F off and not to steal. I tried to brush it off but went back in with my food, showed him the bag and he said whatever don't loiter then. I said some things I regret but damn I was pissed. Look buddy, I'm sorry I didn't buy from you guys today but now you've lost a customer for life. It was already cheaper to buy from BevMo but I wanted to support you. I can appreciate that shoplifting is an issue but take a step back before you jump to conclusions. read more

This store is just across the street from a large BevMo location. I went to BevMo to find a certain whiskey I've been wanting to get for a while and they didn't have it in stock. The BevMo guys told me to check out Dick's Liquor across the street. Weird comment for two reasons 1) because BevMo is supposed to have EVERYTHING, but 2) because Dick's Liquor didn't show up on my Yelp search! Great liquor store and I'm glad I stopped in. They have a huge refrigerator to store cases of beer, kegs, and bottles of white and red wine that need to be chilled. They also have a decent cigar selection and it's encased in a walk-in humidor. The whiskey selection is better than BevMo's, in my opinion. Most of the selections aren't behind the glass either, so you can read the labels and view he bottle before you buy, which I like doing. They also have some rare whiskey and scotch behind the counter that you can see, but most good stuff is readily accessible. Love the spot also because there's a great taco shop right next door. Only downside is parking -- no private lot and parking not the street during business hours can be tough. read more

A woman wanted the kid, Nick, behind the counter to finish helping the GrubHub man, a bit of an older man. But, the kid behind the counter was being SUPER rude and dismissed the man as basically being obsolete stating he can wait! She gave the kid a lesson about how delivery people make less money the longer they have to wait. The kid kept trying to gaslight her, but she put him in his place. In the end she walked out. Looks like they lost a customer. The kid was extremely rude to her and even more so to the delivery man. The kid kept making the delivery man wait, saying customers come first. UhDuh! hey KID that man is delivering for a Customer. The longer he has to wait the longer it takes and it impacts his earnings: one by making him wait with your vile behavior they make money by the delivery NOT the hour like you and two the longer it takes it could impact his tip. The kid's dad is the owner. Hey Dick your son has a lot to learn. He also stared at the woman with a heinous grin as though his ____ didn't stink. Look up gaslighting that is what you did! By the way, most apps have a feature where delivery people rate the businesses too! That kid needs a taste of the real world, probably needs to Learn about supporting himself and getting fired for his horrible behavior. read more

Not to mention they have a fresh beer cave that's always stocked with the best brands, really all you need are here. I've lived in the area for a woke but only started coming here recently. What a gem! Great selection at very competitive price. I came in while waiting for my burrito to be ready and left with some nice rye whisky and several bottles to stock up on the home bar. All doors are kept open so very good air circulation. This place is very well run! Support local business! read more

Decent beer selection but not amazing. No one said hi to us until we were finished and put our things on the counter even though we walked around the whole store. And the 22oz Craft beer choices are minimal. It was nice enough store and we are happy with our beers but it wasn't worth the special trip into La Jolla. My god father died unexpectedly, and I needed to get some champagne for his celebration of life since family and I couldn't be there. Adam at Dicks was so helpful and accommodating and helped me coordinate some moving parts. I was so appreciative of his immediate yes answer, and how quickly they fulfilled my order. I moved to La Jolla a couple months ago. I've been coming here every week. Today I bought an electronic cigarette and I tried it when I was outside. It did not work, and I immediately went back and let the manager know. I was polite about it and asked for a replacement. He said their policy is try the device in the store, which seems very idiotic considering the COVID-19 pandemic. He wanted me to take my mask off and blow smoke in the store and endanger other customers. He was unempathetic, rude, and basically told me to kick rocks. Suffice it say, I will be taking my business elsewhere. Really living up to your name. read more

My recent review was somehow deleted from the Dick's Liquor Yelp site. Very interesting. It was a negative review, because the service from the guy behind the counter (short guy) was terrible. Sometimes he yells at people if they don't know what a Chaldean is. This is inappropriate behavior. Yes, there's a large Chaldean community in El Cajon, and many people in San Diego know this. But tourists don't necessarily know this, so the guy shouldn't be condescending about it. Rather, he should simply explain things. We have many choices in La Jolla when it comes to good wine, beer, etc. I can't come back here until they fix two things: (1) improve customer service; and (2) stop serving alcohol to obviously inebriated customers who *drive* away from the store. Yes, the customer buys two mini liquor bottles and a bottle of beer and chugs both in his car before driving away from the Dick's Liquor parking lot. He drives up the alley and tosses the bottles into the alley. All of this happens IN THE MORNING -- every day. Dick's should not be enabling this alcoholic man's problem. It puts the community at risk. San Diego Police Department: If you want to catch a DUI suspect any morning of the week, stop by the Dick's parking lot and look for a late 1990s green Toyota 4Runner. read more

Cool and well stocked liquor store in La Jolla. We stopped in to Dick's on a week night. The owner (it's my understanding he bought the place from the family of the original Dick) was working. Great guy, very friendly and had a sense of humor. Well stocked liquor, wine, and beer selections. Good craft beers as well, not just the usual suspects. We didn't need any candy or snacks, but they had a good selection of those as well. And, not just your gas station chips and candy bars. The store was very clean, and the layout made browsing easy. I've noticed a couple of yelpers mention prices at Dick's. They aren't out of line with any other liquor stores I've been to in La Jolla. It's an expensive area, you probably aren't going to find bargains. But, if you want to go to a locally owned place with great selection and a friendly proprietor, Dick's is your joint. read more

I had to review this place...it's called dick's liquor. Before I moved to SD I visited la jolla a couple times and had to buy alcohol, "oh those days." being underaged and not knowing where to go I stopped here..let me tell you, they couldn't of cared less and sold it to me anyway....awesome. Well i'm not killing any local secret here because a little later about 2 years ago they got busted by the ABC. I didn't care I was legal at that time already. I had been a customer at Dick's liquor in the past, when I used to buy non-alcoholic champagne. I hadn't been in in about a year. Upon going to the store to buy some screens, Adam, one of the owners was so incredibly rude to me and actually started yelling at me in front of his customers. I had told him the last time I'd been in I wasn't ordering any more champagne non-alcoholic the sugar content was too high. When I returned Adam went off on me because he had some bottles of that fake champagne left. I told him I knew he had other customers that bought that but isn't that your job to supply that stuff? read more
