I have lived in PB for about 5 years now and am sadly moving away... Without a doubt the thing that I will miss the most is MAGIC MARKET! In a time when its hard to afford a small business anywhere, they not only run a local corner market with everything, (including toilet paper)... but do it with competitive prices. Their wine & beer selection is excellent. The deli is fantastic! Personally, I think the real Magic there is the people who own and run it. They are friendly to everyone and quickly develop a report with their return customers. I can't tell you how many times I have gone over and asked for something ridiculous, and magically it appears. I will miss this place profusely and I truly wish there was a Magic Market on every corner, but I doubt it could ever be reproduced. :) P.S. Mike S. is either a liar or an a**hole because if he's shopped there as many times as he claims he'd know that they would go out of their way to be as helpful as possible in every way to anybody... with the possible exception of huge jerks. And if he is so petty, that he has enough free time to get pissed off and go out of his way to complain about $1 worth of roast beef, who cares. read more

There is a short nondescript male who works in the afternoon.. he is rude, condescending and if you try to cash a small lottery ticket in (under $100) he always says he doesn't have cash.. I purchase my tickets here and by law anything under $600 must be paid to me one way or another. Third time this a~hole has done this! read more

I came by here this morning for a quick breakfast fix. There was a little bit of a wait as patrons came in and she helped them prior to finishing up our order. For breakfast I tried the: Eggs, Cheese, and Bacon Breakfast Sandwich on a bagel along with a Bagel with Cream Cheese and Bacon. While waiting I wandered around the whole store and it is your typical family market/liquor store. The service was average and fine, nothing special besides a little wait and her trying to be apologetic about that wait. The bacon was disappointing in the sandwich and the whole order felt rather small. The bagel was tasty though! I would prefer going to Eintstein or somewhere else rather than here, but it can be convenient for those nearby. Other than that for those seeking drinks and snacks, this place is awesome for that. read more

Magic Market is all about customer service. Freddy is awesome and will look in the back for whatever you may need that is not readily accessible in the floor. Nicest people working there! Great meat but, they need to get their signature sandwiches down. The women asked me if I wanted vegetables and which ones on my sandwich, I didn't really know how to answer as I didn't know how they make it and if it's "normal" to have veggies on a tri tip sandwich. Overall the sandwich was not great tasted a little off with the vegetables and bbq sauce. So word to the wise next time you get a tri tip sandwich veggies are not the move. I'll definitely go back and try something different as this seems like a great local deli that I have been missing in my life. read more

Tried to buy a $1.19 pack of m&m's here with 20. didn't work. Then if you use a credit card you get the 50 cent debit card fee??? Which by the way most real businesses now days don't pass on to the customer. This is your typical friendly and local convenient store with nice staff. I went in looking to pick up a bottle of red wine and my eyes caught the sign of buy one bottle of red Malbec wine (Valle Mendoza, Las Acequias, Oak 2010) at $12.99, get one for $.05 cents (yup, five cents!). The owner let me know that the producer was trying to get rid of the 2010 bottles, so I jumped on the good deal. Both the employees were super helpful and I got what I needed. I actually even came back later when I was looking for small bags of snacks to take on the road. Swing by when you need to pick up wine, beers, snacks, or deli sandwiches! read more

Although I'm sure the people that work here are great and all... I've been coming here for a while now, recent events have turned a negative light on to magic market for me. This place is really conveniently located for me, and has a decent variety of food/household products/alcohol and they have their own little deli section near the front that makes sandwhiches and alot more. It's not the cheapest of all little liquor stores/markets but it's the definitely the most magical... I went in for a bag of chips ("DIRTY'S", BBQ flavor), a gallon of water and a juice. As I got to the register the man behind the counter said "I think those chips are expired..." as he reached into my bag of chips and grabs half. I was kind of shocked... he still charged me full price.. and chuckled in my face... good job. in conclusion, I would prefer not to return. If I do, it's probably for 99c toilet paper. read more

I like this place and I'm not really sure why. I just smile when I think about it. Could it be because my 6 pack of Miller Lite was actually in a Pacifico box? I don't know why that cracks me up so much, but it does. I just imagine the owners in the back, ripping open cases of Miller Lite, shoving the bottles in the Pacifico boxes and selling them for the 6 pack price. "Ah ha! They will never know!" They have a little bit of everything but they now have a refrigerated Beer Cave! They even had my favorite Study Break Stout....they also have Swamies IPA. I tried to count them all but it was cold in the fridge....it looks like they have over 300 different breweries. They also have a large Wine selection. The Magic Market is like our extended Pacific Beach family! Brother Freddy, Cousin George, Mom & Pop! We end up there for SOMETHING almost everyday. They are like the Noah's Ark of convenience stores, no joke, they have at least 2 of anything you could possibly imagine. If you need them to carry something for you, they will, just ask. It's the greatest place to have right across the street. If you need salad dressing for dinner - they have it, you need fresh eggs for breakfast - its there, a ballcap to wear out and watch the game - they got em, shipping tape to mail something out - they got it and there also seems to be a lot of winning lotto tickets coming out of that place! It apparently IS magic! Prices are not bad at all and most importantly service ALWAYS comes with a smile, a "how are you" and good conversation. I don't know what we'd do without them. I love Magic Market!!! Freddy and George you are legends - friendly, helpful service with a smile, always. This place has everything you need and great Boar's Head sandwich deals which include chips and sandwich made with love for only $6.99! Zico coconut water at only $1 beats most supermarkets. Best of all is the wine cave in the back which Freddy stocks himself, great for popping by when you're headed out for a BYOB someplace nearby or just for shits and giggles at home. The Magic Market has many names... Tragic Market, Magic Carpet, etc. But everyone who lives nearby loves it. Freddy is always friendly and so are the others who work there. They always remember you and often times have little gag gifts they are selling like pens that give you a little shock when you try to write with them or the fake computer mouse that does the same. Aside from those things, I love the community feel they bring to PB. The Magic Market is everyones "go to" spot for a six pack before heading to the beach. read more

This place is a shithole by all definition of the word. The soda refrigerator is barely cold at best. I asked about the temp of a diet coke I was purchasing because it felt a little above the cold temp I usually like to drink my sodas and she felt it and said she has the coldest drinks in town, rudely I might add. I went back today, out of convenience, and was purchasing an energy drink when I saw a handmade sign on the refrigerator door that said "Special two for $3.50", so I grabbed another. When I went to pay it came to almost $5.00, I asked her about it and she said there is a tax and CRV added to it. Tax is approx 10% or $.35 and cry is $.05 each, which I asked her to clarify and she also said there is a convenience fee. False advertising. They also charge $.50 on credit and debit transactions. And to top it all off no-one ever smiles or seems friendly here, very morbid and awkward feeling while inside. There are too many convenience/liquor stores within walking distance to put up with this, I would avoid this place if at all possible. read more

I have to give one star to be able to speak my peace otherwise it would be a 0 * unfortunately the owner's mother refuse to give me a deli sandwich after I purchased nine sandwiches on their Deli card after the 9th won the 10th ones free she was upset because I haven't bought a sandwich there since last month so she said no just don't work I don't care get out or pay this is bait and switch it's totally illegal this is bad business practices I love their deli sandwiches but I refuse to be screwed in this way I give them a zero rating and I'm not changing my mind how dare you suck me into buying 9 sandwiches saying hey the 10th ones free and by the way I bought those 9 sandwiches was in a 3-week. lunch for me is almost always a sandwich I can eat at my desk so I have tried every sandwich place around here. I keep going back to the little locally-owned place because of their bread. They use their own house made bread and it's fantastic. You can get any kind of basic turkey, ham or roast beef sandwich here but ask for what's on special, it usually comes with a cup of homemade soup or potato salad. read more
