I have a 2 handraised budgies and 1 handraised Bourke that I got from the shop owner, Amelia. They are the picture of good health. In October I fell madly in love with a 'Princess of Wales Parakeet', who had been attacked as a baby and was missing part of his beak. (This bird, Cosmo, was NOT from Birds & Bs) While he's still young, Amelia has been grooming Cosmo's beak every week for months, little by little, to help his beak grow out in a way that helped his underbite, and prevents splitting. The progress he's made so far is remarkable. She has been so patient and kind, explaining the process in detail along the way. I know Cosmo is living his best life thanks to her. I just love(d) Birds and B's, nothing but positivity and delight when visiting there. 10 years ago I adopted a double yellow, headed Amazon. She is the light of our lives, and Kim at Birds And B's has taken care of her since the day we brought her home. She offered sincere care, concern and incredible knowledge about the Amazon Parrot. Echo is now 10 years old, and as I do, every month or two, went to retrieve my supplies, that were needed for her. To my surprise, the business had been sold. Not a problem as I introduced myself to the new owner, and carried on with my purchases. I have to say, I have continued to shop here, as the quality of merchandise had always been the same, and I expected nothing less. I was wrong, unfortunately, and I've decided to take my business elsewhere, at this point. This was not an easy decision as I love the "Mom and Pop" vibe, and I'm MORE than happy to keep these types of businesses alive, and support them, in my hometown of Ventura. I tried my best, with the new owner, even had Echo groomed there two times, even though I never felt like a valued customer. In fact, I felt like she didn't even like me, which is crazy. I would come in, say hi with a smile, and was treated with just a stare. 7 out of 7 times, I would stand in line for SEVERAL and i mean 10's of minutes, while she talked with ONE person. Did not know who that person was, It seemed, she would make up conversations just to not engage with me. I would always buy toys, food, even want to ask about new products, but she was completely uninterested. I consistently gave her the benefit of the doubt, but finally realized it wasn't me and there was nothing I could do about it. The last visit I made, I walked in, and surprisingly saw a familiar face, an old employee that had worked there prior, to the new owner. It was literally the best visit I had had, and I made that my last as I saw the attention that the old employee gave immediately, and knew then, i would not be returning. I gave it one last attempt, and I called in for a grooming appointment; early by my standards, which surprised me because I had JUST been in there, but realized I don't think her nails were even addressed [trimmed] on that final grooming. That was the final straw. Wish me luck, as I know the care for exotic birds are limited, locally, when it comes to GOOD care, but I just won't take the chance anymore. Simply said; I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE AT ALL. As you can see, i PREVIOUSLY, HIGHLY recommended it I'm being very nice by giving that extra star, as I don't want my review to be questioned at all. Took such good care of my parrot! I warned them that he does bite pretty hard but the staff was fearless! It was only 15$ for a full grooming - wing clipping, nail cutting, and beak trimming. They take the birds to the back to do the grooming so I couldn't see exactly how it went, but when he came back out he was so calm and looked so handsome! As far as adoptions, they have a huge selection of all kinds of birds to choose from: budgies, cockatiels, lovebirds, doves, quails, conures, you name it! Lots of pretty color variants, too. A lot of the birds require "proof of proper housing" prior to adoption, which I love! All of the supplies on display like cages, perches, bowls and toys were at an amazing price. They have a lot of used items that are in great condition and would be awesome for somebody who isn't looking to spend a fortune. I bought one of the boxed wooden perches and it was a decent price, i think about 15$? It wasn't too hard to assemble but it had a slight manufacturing error. Honestly, I'm not mad though! It is very big and sturdy and the drop tray is wide. Major pet store chains would charge double for most of the stuff they have! read more

I've bought 2 cocktails at a very good price. They have a larger selection of birds then PetCo or PetSmart. Also they have more of a selection of birds cages to choose from. If you decide to hand feed a baby bird they have all that you would need. If your bird needs to be tested on the sex of the bird it can be done. Or if you need your bird wings clip or nail trimmed you can have it done too. I highly recommend this place to go. read more

I got my cockatiel from this shop in December and my life is forever changed since I adopted my sweet feathered baby. They're healthy, active, loves to whistle, silly and so fun. They were tamed in two weeks! It is very apparent they came from a loving place. Also, so many toys and food here at prices you can't beat anywhere else. They also clip claws so I come back for that! So knowledgeable! It's like everyone in the store is a bird whisperer. I love their honesty about each and every bird. You can tell they care deeply about them - more than the money in your wallet. They just want the bird(s) to go to a perfect home. I was even looking at a certain bird and the guy working there straight out told me that the bird wasn't a nice bird. He said he was a biter and very grumpy - non social. He was straight out....That really impressed me, because he could of given me some bs story about how sweet the bird was so I would purchase it. They have a nice selection and reasonably priced cages and toys. - Only negative thing Very loud - ears were throbbing when I left. But it's not their fault.... If I could give this shop a 10 I definitely would! After the passing of my father in October, I had a desire to get a bird; it's a long story, my father was always a big bird fan, and so was I. I knew I wanted to Cockatiel based on many years of research and my interest in this breed, so I went on a quest to find the cleanest, most ethical Bird store in Ventura and I came across Birds &B's. I wanted a hand raised baby bird that would fit into our family. I met kIM the owner a couple of times prior to receiving our bird, we discussed what I was looking for and in January she called me up to inform me she had a batch of baby birds. One jumped up at me and that one was mine. He chose me! The whole experience from beginning to end, which was about almost 2.5 , months was so fulfilling informative, loving and carefully thought out. Fun fact cockatiels will live upwards to 20 years so it is a commitment. Kim store is extremely clean, not over packed and she's incredibly knowledgeable and particular about the birds she sells. If I ever decide to get another one she will be the only person I would buy from. This was definitely a great experience one I would highly recommend and her birds are absolutely beautiful. I adore this little hole in the wall business! To me it's just enjoying to walk thru and look at all the birds and see personality. The staff are super nice and don't rush. We have a 2 year old female green cheek Conur that we adopted that has a messed up bottom beak. So every month we go in and the take good care of her. There is a real live Tucan there. This is the place to go for everything bird related. She stocks Toys, the best and hard to find foods, treats and even boxed baking kits, housing and all to make it a place your bird will live in luxury. They will trim beaks, claws and feathers with all the above priced so reasonable why do it yourself when your bird can hate someone else for a while. They are also set up to board and babysit if you need. It sucks when they can't go with you but at least you can rest and relax being confident you left baby in good hands. You can even get that bird here. She has contacts for most species and she has a great selection of littles in store. The little cherry on top of it is the resident watch Gull. The free-range seagull that lords over store and all it's occupants. The only drawback are the shops hours which are very limited at best. Plan ahead and make sure it's before 3 pm read more

Update to my prior post. I realized that having written a review years after my visit may not have been fair to the owners of Birds & B's so, against my better judgement, I went back into the store recently (about a month ago). The first thing that hit me wasn't the loud sounds of the birds. I tune out bird noises now from my own birds at home. It was the heavy smell of mouse urine. This building has two main rooms. One filled with birds and one filled with cages and supplies. The bird room had the very distinct odor of urine throughout. The smell in the supply room was much stronger. I have many years of experience raising both rats and mice and I know this smell. Mice only smell this bad when they are not kept clean. Either the store has live mice and keeps them in urine-soaked, dirty conditions, or they have a wild mouse problem to a gross degree. The one positive to this visit: unlike my first visit, I saw almost no birds in the lowest cages in the store. Almost all birds were up at chest height and with sufficient light. The birds that were low were some doves and some love birds. All of the birds in lower cages appeared content or happy. Next, the noise. Yes, it's loud in there. Godawful loud. That didn't concern me as much as one of the cages I saw that had a clearly deranged cockatoo in it. He was making an incredibly loud moaning/groaning noise *constantly* while rocking slightly. Unlike the other birds in the store, when I approached and started to talk to him, he did not change his behavior in any way (did not acknowledge me or interact with me). What made me more sad was his room mate - an African Grey who looked emotionally pained to be stuck in the same cage as the moaning/droning cockatoo. The grey was trying to sleep, and when I approached and talked to him, he became very interested in something else to do besides listen to his "friend". It seemed like a fairly awful situation for both birds. Lastly, there was a small gull running around on the floor, trying to avoid getting prodded by children. When I asked the owner "Is that a Silver Gull?" (the species most commonly found in the pet industry, she did not know. She stated that the bird was thirteen years old and an Australian kind of gull. When I got home I checked my field guide for Australia and confirmed it was a Silver Gull. How can a bird store not know what kind of bird they've had for thirteen years??? This just seems unbelieveable to me. The attitude I felt from the owner was less care and concern for the birds, and more care and concern for the *business* of selling birds. I will never set foot in this store again. You could not pay me to. read more

We really enjoyed looking at the birds here with my infant son. I was also amazed that they had a toucan! I have never seen one up close. When I was in the amazon basin I would always see them flying up in the canopy with their big beaks but I was never able to see them close up! On the other hand, the store smelled pretty bad and needed some significant cleanup. The store shouldn't be smelling that strongly of ammonia. I'd hate for one of the workers to end up with psittacosis due yo repeat bird feces exposure. There may also be some overcrowding/cage size issues here. You bird experts would probably know better than me though!! read more

This place was reccomended by a fellow bird-owner. My first experience here was with her. The owner seemed to be very friendly while interacting with her but very short & uniterested in me as a new customer. Unfortunately, it's the only place in town, that I've been able to find, that does bird grooming. This is truly the only reason I continue to go back. The staff has never been very welcoming, with each & every experience of mine, & the customer service sucks. If they truly are knowledgeable about birds & all the products, I've not had an experience with them that shows it. I've stopped shopping for new products while I'm there because every time I've had a question about a product, I've gotten a vague, uninformative & uncaring/uninterested response. If there is somewhere else in town that grooms birds, I'd gladly go there instead--in search of better customer service. read more

The major downside to this store is their return policy. Not only do you only get store credit, but you won't be told that the credit expires or when. It's assumed you just know, even as a new customer. I've been to other stores with store credit, but it either never expires or you're told an expiration date. read more

Went here recently for the first time very excited to have found a bird store. What I saw was disappointing. Large parrot marked not for sale in tiny cages with no toys. There were about 4 flat billed cockatoos, DESPERATE for affection. One kept putting its head to be pet and putting their feet outside the bars reaching for human contact. But they were very strict about not touching the birds. There was a macaw in a terribly small cage, he seemed stressed and just constantly rocked, also no toys. There was a green conure in the front of the store with ALL his body feathers missing. This is from stress. He was head bobbing and chewing on the cage like crazy. The store is small and not well maintained or ventilated. Employees seemed upset and unfriendly. None of the birds they sell are tame. Their cages are marked as "not friendly" . And that poor toucan stuck in thst tiny cage with bowls not meant for his shape bill. Such a depressing store to be honest. read more

I have such mixed feelings about this store, so I will try to explain it in sections. 1. The birds. It seems like some are rescues. About half of the birds (almost all the large parrots) were not for sale. These long term birds had no toys, foraging items, etc in their cages. The toucan had a couple, but not enough. A few had severely overgrown beaks. While I applaud them for helping out birds, they need to do it correctly if they are keeping them forever. And maintain overgrown beaks/nails etc. It especially bothered me to see the feather plucking macaw with no foraging items in his small cage. I mean even a paper towel roll is entertainment... 2. Cleanliness. The cages are clean. The floors and the rest of the store was somewhat of a disaster. Having chickens and a seagull running around I'm sure makes it somewhat unmanageable. But it still seemed like the floor hadn't been cleaned in awhile. They threw mealworms all over the floor for the seagull while I was there. In my opinion, morning and night moping should be a part of the daily checklist in a pet store. And as someone else said "White dust" aka a buttload of bird dander was everywhere. A daily swiffer duster was needed for sure. 3. The staff. A guy and a girl were working. Another girl was there with a sun conure just hanging out. Seems to be a friend? Maybe I just have higher work ethic than someone who is probably getting paid minimum wage, but... you should be cleaning. Not hanging out with your friends. With that many birds I'm sure there is always something that needs to be done. I found a lone cockatiel by himself away from the rest and asked about him. I was told "he needs work", I asked what that meant and she said he's a spaz basically (that's my paraphrasing she didn't use the word spaz). Well I could tell that by all the blood on his wings that he obviously freaks out easily. I took him anyway, he was $50 because he was kind of a mess. I've never bought an animal in my life, always rescued them, which is why I feel weird about writing this review. I supported a business I have mixed feelings about. Nothing was asked about cage, other birds, quarantine, nothing. A missed opportunity for an upsell on food and a cage. The bird was just grabbed out (by wrapping her hand in her sweatshirt when he lost his mind) and putting him in a box. I pray it wasn't the pet store who trimmed his wings because they were a hot mess. I don't think it was, I feel like this was a bird given to them by someone. He came with a couple foot toys and large millet pieces, I thought that was very nice. 4. Boarding/grooming. Boarding birds in a store where there is no place to quarantine them is just asking for disease to spread through your store. It's nutty to me that someone would bring their bird here for this service, or that it is even being offered. I've been a vet tech for exotic animals (specifically birds) for 13 years. So take my review as you will, maybe I'm a little too anal. Or maybe my assessment is correct. Anywho, my bird is molting and growing back his flight feathers which is definitely helping with the falling off the perches/freaking out/bleeding situation. He's warmed up to me nicely. Birds & B's is in need of a serious deep cleaning. Omar's and Bird Crazy are the role models for how one should operate their bird stores. Simply put, small cages are cruel. At Omar's and Bird Crazy, birds are out of their cages during the day and customers are encouraged to hold the birds...I sometimes stay there for hours...wonderful. Birds & B's should try and follow Omar's example. read more

UPDATE - the parrot I purchased here for $750.00 was sick. My parrot died 6 months after I bought her from here. I spent thousands trying to save the poor bird. I alerted the owner and her response was "I hate when that happens". I should have went with my first instinct before I purchased the parrot however, I felt sorry for the bird and it got the best of me. Please go with your first instincts about this store and the way the birds look. I hope no one else will have to go through what I have been through. Spend the extra money and purchase a bird from a clean and humane store. read more

We boarded our birds here for the first time the other day. While we normally leave them elsewhere, we ran out of time to take them to their usual boarding spot and decided to try Birds and Bs since they are closer. They did a great job taking care of our birds, and we were pleasantly surprised to see they even cleaned up the cages and some of the toys. A good local option. read more

I still marvel at the SUN CONURE i purchased at BIRDS n BEES two years ago., it is such a wonderful bird, and Yes, I read that the sole proprietor has a difficult time keeping the establishment clean. She's a bird lover, not a business woman in that she can double her prices (shes the only one in W. Ventura County) and put in an air purifer and dust collector system, but she has all she can do to keep the doors open. I pay ONLY $5.00 to cut my parrots wings, no one charges that low. I do this because they can easily fly away and you will never see your beloved bird pet again. Just look at the LOST section of the Star and you will see what I mean. I know it has happened to me, and I got her back, only to lose her again when I procrastinated on driving from CAMARILLO to get her wings clipped. I was too lazy, and alas, I still miss this full of personality Cocketiel. I also get the SUN CONURES nails clipped at BnB's cuz which she won't let me do, them as her handler, and believe me I ve tried, and that is only $5. too. Please try and support this wonderful, helpful, and special bird shop with buying the supplies because if she goes out of business, we lose...and we lose big time if you own an exotic bird. Awesome bird store, I do agree with others it can be a little smelly at times. The owner is very nice and helpful. I have a picky Blue Crown Conure. I agree with Faith K. I spent 9 hours mothers day trying to get my baby boy out of a tree as he was afraid and being attacked by the outside birds. I finally got him back but now I have him in a flight suite and leash, which he hates but with two cats and a very large puppy he needs to be able to fly away from them. The prices for some stuff seem a little high but I do find everything I need here. Just wish she could afford to be open more hours. read more
