In the last 15-20 years I've been coming to Ventura, I always try and stop by the Wharf, and check out their selection of western wear (I've bought numerous pieces of clothing from there during that time frame). During my most recent getaway trip to Ventura, I made two visits.....the first visit, I found a woven straw fedora-trilby, the Circa 1921, to top off an olive-green Hawaiian shirt I purchased from a different store just a short time earlier. I came in for Pelletized bedding for my rabbits because the new Tractor Supply isn't open yet in Ventura and I didn't want to drive out to Moorpark. When I entered, the young lady at the registered welcomed me. I couldn't find the bag I was looking for because I didn't know what the bag looked like since it's a different brand than I am used to. I asked a young man that was loading shelves and he called for someone to come help me. Another gentleman came and helped me within a minute. They did have quite a large Oxbow small animal pet products more than I have seen at Tractor Supply. So, even though I probably won't be back for these pellet bedding bags when TSS opens; I would come back for all the rabbit chew toys and supplies they have. We love the Wharf. They have such a wonderful inventory. I like my jeans long when I horseback ride. Those sizes are difficult to find at some stores. Not here. I ask a salesperson who was a great help. They have all the great brands: Wrangler, Levi, Carhart, Patagonia. Plus some excellent brands like Olukai shoes. And, there's a tack/pet store too. This review has been a long time coming, but after my visit yesterday--and thinking about it all day--I feel compelled to finally share my experience. I've been a loyal customer of The Wharf for over four years, regularly purchasing my dog food there, and I've always had positive, friendly interactions in that section of the store. However, the clothing section has consistently been a very different experience. Unfortunately, the customer service there has been quite poor. The women at the front have never seemed welcoming, and on multiple occasions, I've felt unfairly singled out. This most recent visit marked the third time I felt watched and followed around the store--not just casually monitored, but closely trailed from one section to another. While browsing baby clothes yesterday, I noticed one staff member shadowing me closely. I moved to the men's section, then back to the baby section, and she was still right there. When I went to look at shoes, she appeared again. It made me incredibly uncomfortable and confirmed my concerns weren't just in my head. At this point, I don't feel morally comfortable continuing to shop in that part of the store. The front desk staff reflect a lack of genuine customer care, and overall, I don't feel welcome or at ease when shopping there. read more

I was in the market for a nice cowboy hat yesterday and The Wharf was the first place I thought of. Unfortunately, my experience was subpar. Upon walking in, I passed 3 ladies engaged in conversation. Not one greeting, not even from the one who I made eye contact with. I spent the next few minutes wandering around, obviously looking for something. A couple of other employees passed me, making eye contact and without a word. Shortly after, I realized the men's cowboy hats were upstairs. There was a gentleman up there who greeted me, but did not offer any assistance , not even as I proceeded to try on hats in front of the mirror. I left, as it seemed apparent I was not destined to buy my first cowboy hat from The Wharf. Granted, it was about 25 minutes until closing, so perhaps everyone was just checked-out and ready to leave. But that's still plenty of time to offer help and make a sale. The only other reasonable explanation would be that maybe the store was robbed a bit earlier and the police had just barely wrapped up their investigation and left mere moments before I arrived, and the entire staff was understandably still stunned by the whole ordeal. read more

I've been a fan of the wharf for years, and the checkout girls have never been overly friendly but still mostly kind. Today on a busy sale weekend I believe I was checked out by Danica and I have never been treated with such blatant rudeness and disrespect than I was today. As a retail worker for a small family owned business as well, it was baffling to me that the wharf stands for such behavior. I shop here every year when the Ventura County Fair is in town. Last year, I bought Wrangler clothing as they have a great sale during the fair. Today, I bought Sofft shoes/slides/mules. They were on clearance and so comfy. Clearance merchandise may not be refunded or exchanged. I double checked the fit on the shoes. I am so glad I did. I bought an 8.5 instead of a 9. We also love the annual Pet Fair!!! We also love Dr. Ron's (low cost) pet vaccines. read more

The Wharf offers great selection on western wear such as boots, working jeans, and lots of work clothes. I work with large animals so I have been here before for some working boots. I also come sometimes for some nice clothing options. They have lots of options. Usually though the customer service is not the best because I have come here before not dressed my best due to working in the field and feel to have been judged before. My most recent experience was when I came in to buy cat litter and I was in line to pay. I was next in line and another couple was waiting in line but not where the line is stated to begin. I was going to walk up to the register as the employee asked who was next and when she saw me she told me I could wait. I do not mind waiting I always make sure people who have less items go ahead of me or elderly people but this was not the case. I am unsure what exactly happened but I also would not have minded waiting if it was asked in a respectful manner. I know many times it is easy to judge based on your appearance but I wanted to write this review as their customer service has not met my expectations on other occasions as well. read more

The wharf has become such a staple in Ventura for all the farm and domestic pet owners. Every time I come in I'm reminded of the beauty that it is to live in a city that has a little country, too. My go to place for wood shavings (I get the classic) and for chicken feed. There have helpful team members that are always on the ready to help you answer questions, locate an item or help you load up the sacks of food into your cart. All are nice and friendly. read more

I never saw a sign stating leave ur purse in the front or purchased items in plain view. Yet we rode on a bike so we had to bring our other items we bought from the other two stores in. We where allowed all the way inside and once in the center of the store confronted by a man that said I need u to give me ur bags to leave in the front. Other customers had bags and backpacks yet he wanted my purse along with a purchase from the sister store. We then saw laughing and snickering by the employees as they stared at us. This was an embarrassment and racial profiling we experienced since no one else was Hispanic. I wasn't going to hand anyone my purse containing legal documents since I had just left DMV. I told the female I was not going to spend a dime to return my belongings and she laughed stating u go have a nice day. I then told her I would be reporting them and she smirked so I added now I will tell by boss whom recommended them along with my coworkers at the school they discriminate based on race. read more

My family and I love coming to The Wharf they always have good selection of clothes when they have it in stock and it's really cool. The only problem at this store are the much older white ladies with graying hair who seem to have forgotten about what it means to have good customer service. They just seem to always want to push sales on you no matter what. They seem annoyed whenever my family or I ask them for another size or if they can look one up for us. I think it must be their old age? I'm really not sure, but they always like to try and get their way. To remedy this, I tend to go to the younger associates for help. Next, while paying at the cashier they seem to really upset whenever they are corrected on the price and the discounts on them. It's really not healthy, it's as if they want to charge the full price to the customers AT ALL TIMES. Literally, one of the cashiers said to us today "You're lucky, it's usually not on sale". Ummmmmm, back handed much??? Calm down ladies geeez. I've worked retail before and I know how pushing sales can be. But you also drive loyal customers away with those bad attitudes too. I do love this place but liked it better before remodeled. They use to carry some really awesome cowboy hats that you couldn't find anywhere else. But not anymore. Liked when the hats were downstairs. But all that aside I still love this place. You can buy stuff there you can't find anywhere else. What I'm not loving lately is their mini bales of timothy hay. For the last three months the hay has been filled with fox tails and extremely dusty. The fox tails are bigger now and easier to remove from fleece, but still. The hay is more dust and small bits than hay. Dust is everywhere. It's really hard to manage. PLEASE tell your supplier to fix their quality. Before this was orchard grass (sweeter and stringier type of hay) with lots of brown patches and so filled with fox tails our rescues' fleece was covered. Also when a girl answered once before I went there and said their hay was perfectly fine when it was so yellow there was no way our animals would touch it, that's not perfectly fine. read more

I went in just before my lunch meeting to browse, found a shirt on sale, then realized I needed to go. Came back 1 1/2 hours later to buy the shirt. I was told it was removed from the sales floor for the upcoming sales event. The manager won't let me buy it now, but if I would have bought it 1 1/2 hours earlier I could have. Been shopping here for years for my dog's food. Nice, helpful and ready to answer questions for you. I recently have had two episodes of them leaving sale signs up and NOT honoring the sale. I worked retail 15 yrs and when this happened, we gave our customers the sale to keep their business. The manager tried to explain to me the brand that was on sale wouldn't give them back the $20 of the sale if he gave me the sale price. I guess the Wharf losing out on $20 was worth my $200 (at least) a month I was spending on my dog's food. I am sorry this local business is losing my business bcuz of their decision not to admit their mistake to a long-term customer. read more

I have loved The Wharf in Ventura for about 15 years+ since I moved to Ventura County. I have a horse and buy many bags pine pellets and pine flakes for bedding every month. Both the pine pellets and flakes were priced reasonably prior to Covid. Since then, The Wharf has raised its prices, not only on bedding materials, but also on bagged horse feed and raw large dog bones. I am talking about up to 30%+ more on these items (and probably a lot more that I am not privy to just because I don't purchase a lot of other items they sell). There is a tractor supply company in moorpark that presently sells horse bedding for close to 30% less per bag for BOTH pine pellets and flakes (classic and mini) at $7.99 per bag. The supplemental feed I buy at the Wharf that is total equine LNSC is $10 MORE than if you buy it at a chewy with FREE SHIPPING for the same size bag. Large raw dog bones are over $20 for a bag of 6 bones....yes, SIX frozen dog bones! I have notified The Wharf about overcharging their customers during a very strained economy but without any satisfactory response or resolution to this unbelievable price gouging. Shame on them!! I am a real and long-time customer of the Wharf but I am very disappointed that they are taking advantage of their loyal customers who own animals and need many of the products that The Wharf stocks. Dropping the prices back to where they are reasonable and competitive again would, in my opinion, increase The Wharf's business and ultimately their bottom line net profits. Everyone should speak up. I sincerely hope The Wharf can do better by their long-time and loyal customers! read more

I went to The Wharf and honestly everyone was super nice until we got to the work-boot section of the store . The older lady who was helping out customer was rude towards me and my family ; didn't care if we needed help. She asked everyone around us if they need help. I finally when up to her since my father needed a different size and she goes "no, we don't have it" ... ask her for another one she is like " I'm busy ..."" . My father got upset that she didn't care we left . Until , I decided to ask the lady at the register if we can order a specific size ... " she said yes!" . I wish the older lady would of offer that option . In the end the lady at register was super nice . I don't know if I'd go back. The petstore staff are totally different! No, they do not have everything under the sun. What they do have is cool, top quality, and very reasonably priced. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. This place is A-1. The Wharf is a good pet store/feed store with a big selection of pet and farm-animal supplies. I used to come here a lot when I had more finches, to buy their fancy seed mixes and then mix them together into my favorite blend at home. I have less finches now and I have a place I go to to buy guinea pig food that's cheaper than the Wharf, but I was in town and in need so I stopped by yesterday. I appreciate that they have hours on Sunday. They also have a home décor and gifts shop on the side of the building and of course their clothing store across the parking lot from their pet/feed store. Occasionally they have live chicks for sale, but other than that they don't have live pets. They do have equestrian stuff and raw dog food and wild bird supplies. Overall, it's a very cool place to visit and I highly recommend it. read more
