This place is awesome. You can see how the owner takes care of everything. The first thing you see is the impressive saltwater aquariums with fish and/or variety of corals being grown. The owner is very helpful with customers, from beginner to experts in the hobby. I was able to get a short body super dragon flowerhorn cichlid for my 75 gallon aquarium through Extreme Marine. If you are familiar with these fish, they are little hard to come by, but Extreme Marine helped make it happen. I'm not into marine life, but my dad was. He passed away recently, and he would always talk about this awesome shop that he went to to get his equipment and fish. After he passed, I visited the shop and spoke with the manager, Chris. I expressed that I wasn't interested in picking up the hobby, but would need help getting rid of all the tanks and equipment. PLEASE READ: Super friendly and helpful staff; that's about the only positive part of this review. However, a lot of their fish are diseased with ich just upon observation. I wish I noticed this sooner. They are also pretty overpriced when it comes to equipment/chemicals. I recently bought 4 neon tetras from them. They were okay for a few days. After watching them for a few days, I noticed one was swimming poorly, not schooling with the others, and his color was fading. I checked my ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, all normal. I continued watching him, and I found him dead one afternoon. I removed him and payed extra special attention to the other tetras. A day later the other started with the same symptoms. Dead in hours. I suspected Neon Tetra Disease. Checked my water levels WITH TWO TEST KITS, all normal. I quickly removed the other two tetras to a separate tank to prevent spread, but I'm afraid it's too late and may have spread to my other fish (it doesn't just affect Neon Tetras). I'm very sad because I loved the people here, but consider another store. I don't know if it's their supplier or if they themselves don't take care of their fish, but so many are sick, so proceed with caution. They only have a 24 hour return policy, so you're SOL if your fish die any later than that with whatever disease they already have. TLDR: Lovely staff, but their fish are sick. Do not buy here. UPDATE: All the tetras are dead, and so are my previously healthy fish. DO NOT BUY HERE!!! read more

Pricing is a bit high, they use to be more competitive when Tats and Dotty were in business. They have a $10 minimum charge of debit/credit cards. I purchased 2 Bangaii cardinalfish for $38 each. It was past 5:00 when I made my purchase. The clerk scooped up the first two fish that he could catch and put them in a bag. (My biggest mistake was to not check the fish before leaving) I felt rushed because I was there after hours. when I got home, 10 minutes later, I noticed one of the fish swimming weird. I immediately recorded it. I went to the store as soon as I could and showed Scott(owner) other fish is doing perfectly fine. His response was"I don't know what happens between here and the customers home" He didn't take responsibility for having his staff sell me a half dead fish. So I was basically screwed. I used to love this fish store. I bought quite a lot of fish from there. Just last week I bought an $80 royal pleco. Although now I'm never going back. I have a 75 gallon tank and a 20 gallon tank. The 75 gallon one just has one Oscar at the moment he's very small. I wanted to get more oscars around the same size of the one I have, so I asked my friend to get me one yesterday (May 14, 2020). Well he came back with one that was quite bigger than the one I have originally. So I called back asking if I could exchange it or get a refund or store credit anything. Because I didn't want to place him in the tank, for fear he'd get aggressive with my Oscar. They said no I couldn't get a refund or store credit. Defeated I placed him in my tank and kept an eye out for any sign of aggression. Almost immediately the bigger Oscar tried to attack my goomba (that's my oscars name) I had to actually get a divider to be able to keep both oscars in there, I was planning on going to the store to ask again for an exchange or something. Although this morning (May 15th) I woke up to the Oscar being dead :/. I could tell he wasn't doing well all last night. I called again since I know they have a policy where they give you a refund if the fish dies within a day. They said no to just throw the fish away. I spent $30 on this fish, I don't think it's fair that I didn't even get store credit. I think this was very unprofessional on their part, and it cause a fish it's life. But much more importantly is the level of service I receive each time I visit. The list is extensive but the top issues are just being kind. They are there to sell aquarium products and answer question. Most people may have questions and their job is to help and in turn into a sale. But when you have an unkind and impatient sales person you feel why should I bother buying from this place. This is not just once but all the time. They are not the only game in town. I'm far more likely to put up reviews that sing someone's praises. I don't like to just be one of those people who complain all the time. Also, like several of you, I much prefer to shop with small businesses. However, right now, I feel pretty hoodwinked, and rather ticked off so, I'm going to share. Below is a receipt from Extreme Marine in Ventura. I spent close to $100 on fish there yesterday. Take a look at the "Guarantee" at the bottom. The x2 Pearlscale Goldfish that I chose yesterday, were in a tank that had small koi and they were being beat up on and the guy said "if you want them, I will give you a half off discount on one. Also, if you have any problems, we have a 24-hour guarantee." So, I took a chance. When I got home, there wasn't a half off, there was only 10% off so, they already gypped me $6. Both were belly up this morning. I phoned Extreme this morning and let them know. All of the other fish are fine. They said I could bring them in this afternoon and to bring a sample of my tank water also. I did so. The nice guy that tested the water said that my Ph was 1 point too high but that shouldn't have killed the fish. The manager then said that due to my tank issues (wth?) that he couldn't comp me the full amount that I paid. I try to be amicable and fair. BUT nowhere on the receipt does it state that you will not receive equal compensation to what you spent. ALSO, I found out that the little Pearlscales hadn't been there but around 24 hours prior to that, AND the tank they are in, is currently being treated for bacteria etc. Those fish should have been in quarantine. Not only did they sell them they didn't even warn me. So, out of the $36.00 that I spent on them, they gave me a credit of $21 whole dollars. I'm sorry, this is shady, and dishonest. I had other things I was going to buy while I was there. I put every last but of it back. I will never do business with this place again, and we have spent hundreds of dollars there in the past buy koi, etc. So, shout out to Extreme Marine on Palma in Ventura. It is sad you guys have gone downhill this far that you can't treat people fairly. Buyers beware. read more

I see a variety of people's experiences at this store in the other reviews. I do notice that the poor reviews come mostly from those with little experience with tropical fish. There is a learning curve for sure to keeping fish healthy. My personal experiences at Extreme Marine has been the the folks working there are very knowledgeable and have spent plenty of time with me giving great advice especially about water chemistry. They do free and detailed water testing which can save your fishes lives. Anyone setting up a new tank, please be aware about getting the water right before you put fish in the tank. Went in to buy a gift certificate for my Brother in law who is a Huge fish enthusiast; walked out well versed in the different needs of this micro eco-system. The staff was extremely patient with me, explaining all the in's and outs of tank management and making sure any concern or confusion I had was addressed. This is definitely a specialized hobby so if you are new to this, respect their advice; these are living creatures you want to "control" and it is hard. Also, it is expensive so don't try to be cheap about these animals care. You play god when you build and maintain an ecosystem- at least respect that fact, learn from others more experienced and be okay with some failure. I recently bought a JBJ All in One tank from them and when I unboxed it at home I noticed a huge scratch in the glass (not their fault). I called and was advised to bring the tank in so they could replace it and they did the same day! I'm a picky aquarist and I realized I wanted a higher quality aquarium like ADA, so after having it for 5 days, I called and asked if I could bring it in for a refund. They told me as long as I had the receipt they would follow the return policy, no problem. I was so pleased with their customer service I had to support their business, so I asked if they had a specific Kessil light, which they did, but in the wrong color spectrum. They offered to order one for me and it is coming in reasonable time so I am very satisfied. On top of their amazing service, they have a great selection of niche fish including my favorite pygmy corydoras and niche shrimp including tiger blue neocardina. I have no doubts they would be able to get any fish I desire. I can't say enough about this store because it is by far the best local fish store in all of Ventura County! read more

I was very impressed with the fish that was sold in this store. A good friend of mine who owns some fish recommended me to come to the store for a few good black African Oscar and fish equipment, tank, Gravel, rocks, lighting,water treatment and food. My 11 year old daughter wanted this for her 2015 Christmas present. So we spent a few days returning back for more information to decided on how many fish will be living in our 50 gallon tank. So after a few visits to the store my daughter finally made up her mind and deciding on which fish she wanted. Keep in mind that we ask every question about choosing which size tank, which type of fish, food and equipment and including fresh water treatments for the tank prior to our purchase of our fish. My daughter and I are novice to this fresh water fish owners and a course you'll be asking repeated questions during our visits. Well we brought all the equipment home and set up the tank, gravel, rocks, plants, heater, thermometer, filter, and lights so I basically spent a lot of money right. So we set everything up and place fresh water in the tank and poured chemicals for fresh water treatment. So we needed to wait 48 hours so our fresh water tank can be condition prior to purchasing our fish. Well needless to say everything is ready. So when we arrived my daughter selected her two Black African Oscars. We brought our fish home and prepared our fish for entry into the tank. Well, sometime during the night all the fish died they were floating on top of the tank. So later on that day we placed a call to the store and informed to what had happen to the fish. The store staff stated to place the fish in the refrigerator and bring the fish and an 8 oz of the tank water. So upon our arrival to the store the staff ask for the fish and they examined the fish and tested the water from the tank. About 15 minutes later they stated that the chemicals to the fish tank was too high that's why the fish died. So I stated what happens now is there anymore of the same fish and they stated yes but we can sell you the fish for 50% off because the fish did not survive the fresh water Tank. So I said why should I pay for more fish if I did everything y'all ask me to do before I brought the fish home. And it took the store to determined how they were going to deal with the dead fish. It should be an even swap and then tell me how to correct the water treatment. The owner of the store over heard what happen and he stated it is our policy to bring in the fish within 24 hours of purchase. Well I did that I'm just can't understand why I need to spent 50% on the same fish after I spent several hundred dollars in his store. The owners stated it was there policy and procedures on dealing with there customers. I then stated" well why did you ask for a sample of my tank water prior to me buying the fish this will definitely could have resolved the death of our fish " then I couldn't believe what this fool just said to me. He stated pointing to a large black board hand written in chalk up near the ceiling the store procedures. So when I stood up near the cash register I read what he had and I followed there guide lines to the "T" he still wanted me to pay 59% off the cost of the new fish. I was stun I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The worst part was he gave me 30 seconds to decide or the offer was over. Well the owner walked away moments after he made this out rages statement you got 30 seconds. Well I didn't get any fish from his store !! But this warning is for everyone who is beginning to start up a fresh water aquarium from this store they do not care about you !!! When they see you they see $$$$$'s they act as if they care but they showed there true colors. DONT BUY ANY FISH FROM THIS STORE !! Wow, I bought a fish from Extream Marine last night didn't make. Fish was dead within an hour. I checked my water and everything was good. Most shops give you at least a 24 hour window not Extream Marine. I would understand if it was two or three days later but I tried calling them that same day but they were closed I wasn't looking for money back just store credit or a replacement. I brought some of my water from home and the owner didn't even want to test my water. Well that's the last $50 dollars they get from me. This is a wonderful place to go for well educated fish specialist! Always greeted with a warm smile and no judgements on which "level" you are in the hobbie. Avoid Petco and Pet Smart...go here! They have very healthy, strong fish. Targeted quality products and even sell crickets! Here are but a few of my great experiences; They saved my entire 55 gallon fresh water tank with 15 fish from Ick by writing me up with specific instructions and products. I had two Tiger Barbs in my community tank; picking on my other fish. They recommended instead of adopting the barbs out; add 3-4 more and they will calm down exponentially. It worked!! They also ask specifically what is in your tank, so you avoid putting something "cool" in and it killing your other cool fish creature. This proved quite helpful....and saved some of my more expensive fish creatures. Thank you guys!! read more

So one thing you gotta understand is 1) fish die and 2) there is no warranty. As long as you understand that this is not a bad place. The PetSmart in Oxnard does have healthy fish so if I need something "ordinary" I go there...because they have a 14 day warranty. However if I need something a bit specialty like an assassin snail or a piece of Driftwood for my fish tank or plants or cherry shrimp this is the place to go. They had great bacteria starter and they have great supplies as well if you need something specialty. To be honest, i only go here because Ventura doesn't have any other options.
