The stylist did the exact opposite of what I wanted (I showed pictures and stated I wanted a trim) and once she CUT ALL MY HAIR OFF she said " oh this was the best I could do" DO NOT come here! THE BLACK AND WHITE: I came to birds from a friend recommendation and it didn't disappoint! Needed to prep my hair before my wedding and they knew exactly what I wanted. Medium fade, assymetrical, scissor top. If you were able to decipher that, you're a haircut regular. I had to reserve ahead of time and the site is pretty straightforward. At the end of the haircut, I got a nice hot towel to edge out the back. THE FINAL BAMBOO: $35 for a haircut minus tip + free beer. Five stars and birds get my business anyday. read more

Fancy told me the truth, did what looked best, and did an incredible job fixing the bad haircut I had. Legitimately went from the worst haircut to the best haircut because of Fancy. I moved to Austin a year ago and was on the hunt for a new barbershop. After trying several locations, I found my new "Go-To". "Ben the Barber" has been fantastic. Cool dude who can cut a mean fade. I have yet to get a bad haircut when I visit this place. I also like that they offer a beer when you visit. Recently, though they have narrowed the choices of beer to just Lone Star, unfortunately. But otherwise, I'm usually deeply satisfied after I leave. The hairstylists are great when it comes to knowing what I want and excellent conversationalists. Got a great holiday haircut at Birds. Like many barbershops it's hit or miss if you select any stylist. I was lucky enough to get Jacob this time and he did a stellar job; very detailed oriented. As for the shop itself, you can book through the birds app and check in is a breeze. Like most of the birds locations they have sone canned beverages (and beer), you can drink while waiting. The location is a cross the Hancock H‑E‑B so it's convenient. The only thing is parking is very limited and if you park out back you got to be really careful when exiting as the driveway is very tight; there's parking on the street as well and you can risk it by parking in the enormous H‑E‑B parking lot as well. This location tends to book up because of its central location so I suggest booking at least a couple days in advance. read more

They were very kind, and they made sure to ask questions about what I wanted in the cut. The shampoo at the end was great, it was very calming. I've never had a haircut leave me in tears but there's a first time for everything. I went in with nice long hair, albeit needing a trim, and came out looking like a three year old massacred my hair with scissors. I asked for three inches off and a u-shaped cut, and Ivy took at least six inches off at the longest point of my hair and the rest is bob length. Not to mention it's all uneven and she pulled and snapped my hair brushing it the whole time. I am really baffled at how bad it is. Wish I never went and got this haircut. After the first visit I can't say I've been impressed with the Birds on 41st Street. 3 calls to make an appointment...I'm left on hold over 10 mins. if they come back to the phone at all. So unless I drive by I guess I can't make an appointment as I don't know the barbers listed online. Guess I'll have to fine another barbershop. read more

I can't recall ever getting a bad haircut at this Birds location. I like the hip Austin-centric vibe and identity. Being offered a beer while you wait is cool. Unfortunately, getting your hair cut there can be a real pain in the ass. You can walk in and wait, often for an hour or more, or you can call ahead to reserve a slot so you can do your waiting at home or work. What you cannot do, however, is schedule a traditional appointment. If you find someone who does a good job on your cut it makes sense to seek that same stylist next time, right? Birds has worked out a system that will make that a complicated and unpredictable endeavor. If you want a cut from a familiar stylist you'll have to go to Birds' website to see when he/she is working. Then you'll have to call that day and see what time they can work you in. Better call earlier rather than later to get on the schedule, so set yourself a reminder to call when they open at 9:00. The person who answers the phone might be nice and helpful or might be annoyed that they're going to have to check that person's schedule and make whatever calculations are needed to give you a sorta-kinda guesstimate of a time slot. You juggle your day around that time and show up a bit early but wind up waiting an extra 15 minutes. Fun. Heaven forbid you don't see your stylist's name on the schedule for that week. You might wait another week and still not see it. Your hair's getting shaggy. So you call to see if he/she still even works there and when they might return, only to have some kid curtly tell you she's not in charge of HR.* More fun. So you might be thinking something like, "dude, of course they don't do appointments, it works like a barber shop - barber shop is right there in the name. You get your hair cut by whoever's available first." And you'd be absolutely right. Thing is, despite having barbershop in its name Birds looks and feels like most unisex hair salons. You certainly pay more than you do at a "real" barbershop and you're going to wait longer than you would at one. So, what do you do when you've waited two weeks without finding your stylist on the week's schedule and the staff have no idea or interest in even confirming that he/she is still alive? You go to a REAL old school barbershop, get seated right away, pay $10 less, and worry that the old guy cutting your hair doesn't understand hairstyles more recent than 1960. And next time you find a unisex salon that lets you get back to a regular, predictable hair care routine. Whew! *Footnote: That did not literally happen, it's what I imagined the person was thinking based on their indifference. To be fair, no one's ever been actively rude to me here, even when I've been frustrated. read more
