Visited with the Baltimore Pizza Club, and so was able to sample a few different kinds of pies. The Duck Duck Goose was my favorite: crispy thin crust; sweet, but not overly so. It has a duck egg in the middle, so the first bite of each slice is amazing. The Locavore was also quite good, kind of like a salad on top of a pizza, with greens providing a pleasant bitterness to make the overall flavor complex, though the crust on this pie was a bit too charred on the bottom. The Spicy Fennel Sausage pie didn't have enough sausage on top, but the bites with the sausage were great when you could get them. I was a little bored by the Pesto, but maybe I was pizza'd-out at that point. I also tried the Butternut Squash Ravioli. The pasta was tender and prepared as well as what I would expect from the generally more-expensive Cinghiale (or even Eataly in NYC), though the portion size and price matches well with Cinghiale's half-size portions. The creaminess and sweetness of the butternut squash filling was offset in texture and flavor by the spicy sausage chunks tossed with the pasta, and the brown butter sauce added an additional layer of complexity. Really delicious, but a bit small. $14. I'd rather pay $17 and get a full meal. Excellent beer list, with multiple beers on tap from a number of local breweries (Evolution, Union, Heavy Seas, Brewer's Art, Stillwater, Flying Dog, Duclaw, Natty Boh). The bar was lively even on Monday night, so you know they're doing something right (and this didn't seem to be a Monday Night Football crowd). I'm very excited to go back and sample the crudo bar. Maybe the hype killed this place for me. I went in expecting to be in for a special treat, and while the menu was creative and the ingredients did embody the "farm-to-table" quality that I love, I feel that it was over-glorified gastro pub food that didn't totally meet my expectations especially in relation to the exorbitant bill that we received at the end of our dining experience. I liked the cozy atmosphere and our server was wonderful. However, not all the dishes that we ordered were fantastic, and to me they should be for the price. The kale salad was tasteless...I frequently prepare kale at home and in many different ways (including as a cold salad) and this tasted like plain blanched greens. The tuna tar tar in tomato water was outstanding - best dish that any of us ordered. The pizza was good, but nothing out of the ordinary (can't hold a candle to Tooloulou's!) I also ordered the mushroom bruschetta - the mushrooms were delish, but didn't pair well with the bread because they rolled off - just a bit awkward to eat. Next to the tuna, the best part of the meal were the desserts, which were well-presented, subtle, creative and unpretentious, which I think this place needs. I think we have a lot of great places to eat in Baltimore, but this one is riding on the "fair food for Manhattan prices" trend that some of the city's restaurants have been on for the last couple of years. I was excited to try this place, but now I have to question some of my friend's taste because it was a bit of a disappointment. First of all the entire menu is "rustic Italian" served "family style". The food was good but not great. My main problem was with the rustic-Italian-familiy-style menu .... one does not need to be an avid cook to prepare this type of food at home. My husband and I shared an arugala salad which was good (but mine is better) and my husband ordered the pasta Bolognese which was just OK, a bit too doughy. Bolognese is supposed to be about the Bolognese sauce ... This dish was skimping on the sauce and once again, mine is better. Rustic Italian food is also very inexpensive to prepare but the prices in the restaurant didn't reflect this. If you love rustic Italian food but you can't cook then you might like this place. If you can make a decent tomato sauce yourself you should skip this place altogether. BUT on a positive note, the decor was cool and I like the beer and wine list. I think if they can refine & improve their menu (and maybe stop trying to trick people into over paying for rustic Italian fare) then I'd go back. read more

Birroteca is insanely cozy, the food, the beer, the atmosphere. The place has a cozy, tavern feel. I wanted to check out Birroteca as soon as I heard about it. It took me a little time to actually get around to it, but I'm pretty happy that I did. The portions are massive, perfect for sharing. We ordered pasta and pizza and split them. The calamari pasta was fantastic. I want to go back just thinking about it. We got a pizza with duck, which was sweet and salty. Both selections were winners. The beer selection is pretty decent and the wine list looked to be as well. I'd gladly go back. The location is odd, but it is nice that it is located a bit off of the typical Hampden hoopla. Creative, seasonal, modern-Italian food. Once we found the place and got over the bleak location, our dinner was ridiculous. I initially scoffed at the idea that after sharing apps family style, we should share an entree or two among the 3 of us since my family has big appetites. We ordered meatballs, eggplant fries, brussells sprouts, and burrata bruschetta. The meatballs are a pork and beef blend that the rents say was quite tasty. The sauce was excellent, very fresh and packed with tomato flavor. The sprouts were fried to crispy amazingness, though I thought the aioli was meh. The eggplant was light and crispy, without any sogginess or heaviness to the vegetable, despite being fried. The red pepper dipping sauce was true to its name and very red peppery (too much so to me, but I'm not a huge pepper fan and would have liked a more nuanced, subtle flavor). The burrata would be better served on thinner slices of bread, and with fewer tomatoes and basil leaves, so it can really shine, but it was a nice enough dish, and the cheese was creamy when I got a solitary taste of it. Penne sausage met with good marks, and the clam linguini was good (if super garlicky, beware). I had the butternut squash risotto, which was at first very bland. The chef remade it, and it was very good (I think s/he forgot the cheese and some spices [like definitely pepper] the first time around). They comped a dessert for the mistake, so we had olive oil and sea salt gelato--a bit too strong but mellowed after a few bites of the chocolate chocolate-chip cookies served with it--and a pistachio scoop which was satisfyingly full of bits of nuts. The Bad=minus 2 stars: One, I found 2 hairs in my food. One really long blonde one in my squash (my hair is short, dark chestnut red right now), and a shorter (long) one later on :( I didn't say anything because I didn't want to bring down the mood for my parents on our nice dinner out. Anyway.... TWO, the wait staff kept trying to take our plates with food still on them (My dad watched them take a plate away from a little girl next to us while she was still eating!!!). Let me point out that we had a very early (5pm) reservation, and we were only the second table in the front dining room. Let us finish our small plates at a leisurely pace, please!!!! Even my parents complained about this and they are very laid-back. I had to literally tell multiple servers repeatedly to the point where it was almost embarrassing, but we really wanted to finish our last serving of sprouts etc and were slowly picking at them. Not sure why they were rushing us so badly, but it was ANNOYING to say the least. We were out by 6:30, and there were still plenty of tables, jeesh. We decided to come here on Valentines. Not for Valentines Day, just because we wanted to go out to eat. Valentines Day is stupid. You should celebrate to celebrate, not because a stupid hallmark card tells you to. Anywho, we got a reservation here and showed up right on time and was seated immediately. I heard this place had an amazing craft beer listing but upon perusing the menu, I was not impressed. That was unfortunate. I went with an Evolution Rise Up Stout for the evening; decent stout with good coffee bitterness to it. In contrast the dinner menu looked fantastic. We started with the Burrata and Salmon Tartar. The burrata of course was delicious and it came with basil and roasted tomatoes. I really enjoyed the salmon. It was well balanced and had great flavor. It did not have that fishy taste that sometimes comes along with salmon. For entrees I of course had the Duck Duck Goose pizza and my wife ordered the wild boar bolognese. The pizza was good. It was borderline almost too sweet for my taste, between the caramelized onion and fig jam, but still solid. The richness of the duck and egg yolk helped bring it around. Damn I love pizzas with an egg on it! Why don't more people do this? My wife's bolognese was pretty tasty as well. The pasta was very well prepared . For desert I had the bread pudding ice cream sandwich. I loved everything about this desert. Just awesome and who wouldn't love an ice cream sandwich that had bread pudding as bread? My wife had the chocolate cake and it was pretty solid as well. The service was really good from the time we were seated until we finished. Our curiosity with the entirely Love/Hate reviews of Birroteca made us game for a visit. It's Really Loud. Uncomfortably loud - as are most restaurants with a lot of exposed brick. But we loved most of our dishes. I was more of a fan of the appetizers than I was the Pizza. For instance, the meatballs were an absolute delight, as was the grilled squid, which was surprisingly simply seasoned, succulent and tender. Absolutely fantastic. We loved them. We would have been happy with just that and our pairing of wine. The fried chickpeas were nicely seasoned, but it was a pretty poor pairing on our part for the food we'd ordered. I lost interest in them rather quickly even though they were savory and tasty. The pizza was a very strange experience. I really wasn't pleased at all, and I'm easy to please when it comes to pizza. Fresh, a decent sauce and a good cheese is all that is needed to make me happy. A pizza with a topping that is not fresh is a cardinal sin, and this one was actually a huge disappointment. Had it been delicious, we would have given it 4 stars. That being said, I absolutely would return for a batch of their delicious four star appetizers, and stop there. :) read more

(05/11/2013) The place has had some good buzz since they opened in Fall 2012, but has reportedly be up and down of late. Have heard it's impossible to get seats on a weekend (or almost on any night for that matter). We went close to when they opened and got 3 seats at the bar, but by 6:00, it was standing room only and vulturing had begun. It's a great space, like Woodberry's hipster cousin in a renovated industrial space by Union Mill. We started with the Spicy Deep Fried Chickpeas, a great bar snack; sweet, savory, crispy, creamy, zipped up with a squirt of fresh lemon. The Steak Tartare Bruschetta was fantastic, smooth, creamy, meaty, mixed with piquant capers, hint of dry mustard(?); was served on thick, grilled, chewy Tuscan bread, garnished with lightly dressed arugula and Parmesan shavings. The Crisp Brussels Sprouts with Coppa and Black Garlic Aioli were probably the best preparation of Brussels sprouts I've ever had; they were roasted in a good amount of some animal fat (probably pork/bacon/belly) crowned with paper-thin crisped slices of spiced coppa, the roasted, chewy Brussels sprouts were crisped, darkly charred, salty, complemented by a creamy, garlicky aioli. The house-cured Porchetta plate with Tonnato (an Italian mayo-based sauced traditionally served with cold meats) and a pickled, shaved fennel salad was tart, unctuous, crispy, meaty at the same time. The Duck Duck Goose pizza (Duck Confit, Fig-Onion Jam, Balsamic, Fontina, Asiago, and Duck Egg) had a wood-fired crust, was salted, crisp, did have a few small bits of confit, oozy yolked duck egg. The dud of the night was the Lamb Bolognese; it was not like what you expect Bolognese to be at all (traditionally mostly meat bound with a little tomato and dairy); this was more like plain tomato sauce (unexceptional at that) with a few shreds of lamb; although the papardelle was cooked perfectly. Everything else was a hit, as was the extensive local draft list and wine selection. Go early for seats at the bar or definitely make a reservation. They've already seen a chef turnover (which might explain the uneven reviews), hope they can keep riding that wave of good vibes. read more

It's more like 2.5 stars. We had reservations for 4 people @ 8pm. Based on other reviews, we thought we'd end up in the main dining area. Unfortunately, we were seated near the bar and the place was crowded and noisy. I guess that's a good thing, but if you've been to Brewer's Art, multiply that by 10 on a crowded night. It seems that if you open a restaurant in that area, servers have to have longish hair, facial hair (just the guys), wear a flannel pattern button up and skinny jeans. I guess that's cool, but certainly not original. Service was friendly and attentive. But, the servers have to realize that most guests don't want to shout so move to the side of the table closer to the patrons. We shared the meatballs. The sauce was tasty and tangy, but the meat was dense and probably a bit over cooked. The bruschetta with mushrooms/apples and truffle oil was pretty delicious and the highlight of the night. We also shared the kale salad. This had potential but there needed to be a bit more dressing. For the main course, we shared the papparedelle with bolognese and the duck-duck goose pizza. The pasta was tasty, but needed a bigger portion. The pizza.. undercooked and a bit too sweet. There are much better places in Baltimore for pizza, Iggies, Homeslyce and Hersh's. Dessert- the hazlenut budino was tasty, but a miniature portion and the chocolate tart was actually pretty good too. Their alcohol selection is pretty extensive and probably the draw for most of the people there. There is certainly room for improvement in the food department. It seemed to be a good place to grab drinks and chill out. But it gets crowded and really noisy. It's unlikely that I'd return for a meal with friends, there are much better places to eat in Baltimore. read more

After attending an Elite event here a few months ago, I knew I had to bring my Dad here for his Birthday. I'm so glad we did. I walked in prepared the be slightly unwelcome with my 3 year old. It was the complete opposite. They even have a kids menu and crayons! The staff was so patient and kind to him. Our waitress was outstanding. Her name was Meghan and even months later I can remember her name. The food was hit or miss. The pizza was very good and our pasta bolognese was also delicious but entree portions were small. Second time went back with my boyfriend and the food took forever, one bartender talked our ears off when we were very much talking and being with each other, but the other came up to me after the meal and asked why I tipped so low before. My husband and I came here with our baby a few Fridays ago and enjoyed the patio. We tried the calamari, artichoke, charcuterie, spaghetti and meatballs and the Italian kit kat. Everything was incredible, my baby boy especially enjoyed bites of the calamari and meatballs! The kit kat was so indulgent - like a giant homemade kit kat with chocolate mousse on top, yum! One of the best meals I've had since I moved to Baltimore. The night we went the pizza oven happened to be broken, so we dined off of the non-pizza menu. Had a reservation for 6 people. Arrived on time. Walked into a very dark entrance. Hostess said our table was being set up now. 10 minutes later we are still standing in crowded entry. Told hostess we'd go in bar to wait; she replied someone would find us when out table was ready (how long does it take to set?). After 10 min in bar I went back to hostess; seemed too crowded that anyone was going to find us. After 5 minutes she said our table was ready but she had to wait for someone to take us upstairs. 5 more minutes. We were seated at a table next to windows. Beautiful old stone walls but extremely drafty by windows. Women in our group all moved away from windows and guys with sweaters sat next to them instead. Breeze blowing through! Waiter was very nice. Ordered drinks and 3 appetizers. Brussels sprouts were good (but they are good everywhere these days). Calamari was rubbery. Eggplant fries were totally flavorless and greasy (they looked so good - very disappointing). We then ordered dinner - 3 different pizzas and 2 other dishes. Two pizzas arrived after about 25 minutes (the place was very crowded). Took about 8 more minutes before the other food showed up. Hate to start eating while others are waiting but the pizza was getting cold (esp. near drafty windows!) Pizza was OK. CuVino in Cockeysville has MUCH better pizza. Desserts were good esp. the kitkat. Noise level was terrible. I know the stone walls etc. cause noise issue. Over the past year I have had dinner at Birroteca dozens of times. This past Sunday evening I met my parents who were visiting from out of town. We are a tough crowd of Italian New Yorkers and all had great things to say about our experience. Brendan was our server and he ensured that we knew we should try the specials. I had the cocktail (the old Shanghai) and my mother had the soup (wild mushroom and fregola) -- both were fantastic. We were seated in the bar, on a Sunday evening, and the crowd was lively. I went here with my fiance who hadn't been wowed before but I figured I would give it a go. We got some cocktails and beer: red wine, Harpoon Party, La Nina and Evo Lot 6. We also tried the fried chickpeas: delicious with a spicy finish and the Verde Bottarga and Margherita pizza. His margherita pizza was blah and mine was interesting: shaved roe on top of a white bechamel based pizza (it was missing broccolini as stated on the menu). I am a pizza snob and these definitely don't top my lists. The margarita in Naples, Italy at Da Paolo will forever be the freshest and most savory pizza I've had. Service was fun, quirky, personable-Kristin was our bartender. A kind of Jennifer Lawrence esque gal. Total before tip was $ 77. The space itself is really neat and I hear they are tearing it down for new development. Okay, I ordered my pizza to go, so I can't comment on the service. The ambiance was nice from what I saw. However, the pizza I ordered (pepperoni- my test pizza of places) was just bad. The crust was really good, but the toppings were skimpy (like a thin layer of cheese or sauce) and the sauce tasted like the kit sauce for pizza kits. Overall, the pizza was very bland and flavorless. This is the only thing I've ordered from them, so I can't speak to anything else. I'm surprised too, given its rather distinct and out-of-the-way and under-the-JFX location. People seem to love Birroteca. Good! What it is and what it isn't: Definitely a good place to rendezvous and sample craft beers on draft - long list of choices and the ones we drank were outstanding and unusual. The bar area manages to accomplish vast and intimate at the same time - no problem accommodating a big group. The dungeon-like ambiance with exposed filament lighting is sexy, and ties perfectly to the secluded geography beside the Jones Falls in Baltimore's hidden, remote deep dark gorge under the highway. I cannot, will not eat here again. All my favorite vegetables are tragically deep-fried. Everything I bit into left that unpleasant greasy film in my mouth. Maybe 20 years ago I could eat that way, but not anymore. Portions are massive and overwhelming. Wait was a bit long, but waiter made up for it by having (awesome) appetizers waiting for us when the table was ready. She made our dining experience absolutely superb. She was so friendly, offered honest recommendations, and she never made us feel rushed. I came here looking for gluten-free pizza with a group of friends. Actually, we had 5 Celiacs at the table, so the server was made well-aware of the dietary restrictions. The pizza was fine, but there was a lot of mixups about what is gluten free and what's not. I am very sensitive to cross contamination, so I asked extensive questions about where the pizzas are prepared, and got mixed messages about the fried items. I decided to err on the side of caution and just got GF pizza. The server was sweet and really wanted to give dessert to my friend, the birthday girl, who is also Celiac. I told him ice cream would be fine if it's certified gluten free, but that it shouldn't have any cookies in it. Of course, he brought it back with a cookie. He was mortified, but it was still ridiculous. Honestly, I'm not going back. There are great cocktails and a great bar, but it's not worth the headache of educating staff about cross-contamination, especially for the price of the food.
