Excellent for happy hour and apps. Although my 2 girlfriends and I didn't do dinner here, I would love to come back and try a more substantial meal. They have daily specials like boar bolognese or whole duck! We sat at the bar, which had a relaxed atmosphere and a mixed crowd - some suits, some younger couples (it was "Galentine's Day"). Drinks: Pretty good local brew selection without being overwhelming. We ordered beers - Union's Balt Alt, Burley Oak's Just the Tip, and some banana beer concoction that wasn't half bad. Food: Amazing! We shared a meat and cheese platter. I loved picking our cheeses from the chalkboard at the back of the bar, and we asked the bartender to decide on the meats. These came out thinly sliced and paired with a delicious mustard and bread. We also had roasted beets, which came in two varieties - an excellent small plate. The mussels were probably the stars of the show - they were served in a classic broth and we had the distinct impression that they had been grilled. Yum! Ate there for dinner on 06/02/13. First time there. Meh... The dining room is a bit fussy and upscale for a microbrew and pizza place. Service was good. The bruschetta (prosciutto, parmesan and arugula) was nothing special. My table-mates loved the calamari. Personally, I wasn't a fan. We shared two pizzas and the family size spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. Pizza #1 - Artichoke - good. Pizza #2 - italian sausage - ok. The spaghetti and meatballs... BLECH!! I think we got the can of Chef Boyardee they had opened in the back. There was no flavor, noodles were overcooked, the meatballs were stingy and tasteless. My recommendation? Great place to have a nice but casual meal. My boyfriend and I came in for our date night and had a wonderful time! We sat at the bar and started with the pork belly, mussels, and an arugula salad. The pork belly and mussels were delicious but I could've passed on the arugula salad, especially for the price. The dressing on it was way too astringent and bitter. For our main entree we had the Duck Duck Goose pizza. It was pretty good although I could've done without the duck egg. I felt like it wasn't cooked through enough. I am all for a runny egg but the membrane was still slimy. Now for the service. Both of our bartenders were very nice but one of them got off before we were done. The one who stayed behind was phenomenal. I should've asked her name but she had blonde hair, bangs, and a nose ring. She was so sweet and friendly, but not overly talkative and annoying. This is a combination review but mostly for the amazing Bartender/DJ Christine. When you walk into the restaurant you realize they have the mood lighting down. It's a little dark, but not impossible to see. The most striking thing I noticed when I walked in was that 'Ego Death' x The Internet was playing. Not only is that a PERFECT album, it set the mood for a fun group meal. For the next few hours it was one dope hit after the other. It perfectly complimented the meal and we were honestly jamming the whole time. It also wasn't lost on my that Christine skipped 'Ignition' x Robert Kelly each time it came on lmao. She played Lauryn Hill and I was honestly swept away. Christine was so amazing that I want to come back the next time she is at the bar. She was cute and clearly has a good ear for music. I'm new to Maryland and I honestly missed the feeling of being in a place that feels intimate without being cramped that has great music and excellent food. Come as soon as you are able, whenever Christine is around. You seriously will not be disappointed. She's a gem. The food was great as well. I was able to try the Gnocchi (bomb) and one of the pizzas (great). I had the salmon poke (yum!) and the calamari (grilled and not fried, surprising and amazing). I recommend Birroteca to every single person who asks. Fresh family style italian that you can literally taste the passion in. They cure their own meats, they make some badass drinks, they are so enthusiastic about their food. Make a reservation! They fill up quick. Stopped by after work for dinner and can't wait to come back! Started with the crispy brussels sprouts - comes topped with bacon and a side of black garlic aioli. The aioli is so delicious, our waitress was awesome and even brought us some more. The portion is huge and we ate it so fast I didn't even get the chance to take a pic! We had to try the duck duck goose after reading all the rave reviews and it did not disappoint. Also ordered the ricotta cavatello pasta with venison, also very delicious . The portions are pretty big so we ended up taking some leftovers home. Overall the food is delicious, but the menu is very heavy on meat which is a minus for me. SUMMARY: More like 3.5 stars... FULL STORY: Dinner on a weeknight - not too crowded - place is relaxed, stone walls and funky lighting, also has patio seating. Best thing we tried was the burrata. Fresh, dairy taste with delicious flavorful pesto and roasted tomatoes. Fantastic. They have some amazing-looking veggie options, but we were uuunpleasantly surprised. Most (all?) of the veggie dishes are fried. Best one was the cauliflower - had a good texture and it's well-seasoned. Otherwise, the brussels sprouts were not so great... too oily, not really crispy, and mostly tasted like salt. The eggplant fries came in a big order, but again... pretty greasy and just not that flavorful even with the spicy mayo. Pretty disappointed on the pizza -- would not recommend it. Margherita is usually a go-to classic... Crust was not tender or flavorful - seemed bland, hard, and oily. The mozzarella didn't seem fresh and was overly melted and greasy. Even red pepper flakes couldn't redeem it. Best thing on the pizza were the mini tomatoes. Lots of better pizza options in the area. Dessert - the home-made kit kat is ok because chocolate and hazlenut are ok... but it's basically nutella - too soft and squishy. Not as good as Alma's kit kat. Ice cream was... ice cream. Came her last week for dinner and drinks with friends and it was better than the first time! We were seated downstairs in a booth, which I love; the seats against the wall were old church pews which was very cool. I love that the tables are covered in white paper and drawing pencils are provided for you. Nice detail that we didn't experience sitting at the bar. The night we went was also a special beer night, where beer from a particular brewery (I forget which one) was $5/each. We also got a free pint glass! This time we got the crispy Brussels sprouts and mussels for an appetizer. The sprouts were amazing and crispy, served with porcetta and a black garlic aioli that was out of this world. The mussels were also very good; plentiful and flavorful, served with chunks of crispy bread to soak up the broth. I had the duck pizza which is a MUST TRY. It was very different, sort of sweet and savory, but every bit as amazing as I thought it would be. The cheeses on it were perfectly gooey, and complimented the fig, duck, and duck egg. The only disappointment was that there was no olive oil and sea salt ice cream; I was in the mood to be adventurous and try it. HOWEVER the pistachio ice cream was superb. But, since my dinner partner and I were enjoying the vibe of the place and each other's company, we didn't mind too much. On to the food: We shared the 5 selection salami and cheese platter. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I'm a sucker though for good smoked meat. We shared the wild boar bolognese - again amazing, and the fennel sausage pizza. The pizza - not so amazing. I went here a few weeks ago with some friends and had an amazing time. It was one of their busier nights but they had everything running smoothly. We didn't have to wait long for our table and once seated the server immediately came over to get our drink orders. The food was also on point. We started out with the olives and calamari as apps. I would also recommend getting any of their three bruschetta. I've ordered a different one each time I've gone. The bread is thick and the sauce they use is delicious! For the pizza, we got the Puttanesca but I've also had the Pistachio Pesto. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The toppings they use are all so unique which is a nice change from the same old ingredients. The portion size is perfect for two people. I would probably order two pizzas if you have 3-4 in your party. I went here with my 5 girlfriends for a birthday celebration. Upon arriving, we made the reservation for a "birthday." Additionally, I talked to the manager to tell him that our friend was turning 21 and it would be nice to have a little candle / cupcake to celebrate. Went to Birroteca Baltimore on Friday night for a work dinner with some out of town colleagues. Once again, Birrotecca did an outstanding job. We love the decor of the old mill building and its transformation into a restaurant. I particularly like the bar. Very comfortable place to sit, relax and enjoy a drink. Bartenders are solid, friendly and knowledgable. Special mention to Zen. We were seated right on time in the upstairs dining room, which I had requested. Also great space! Hope to do a private event there in the fall. Two people ordered the mushroom pizza and now I understand why people rave about it. Truly an excellent menu option. We shared two salads (two for a table of five), which was more than enough, and three pizzas. Between that and the wine options, we were definitely satisfied. Loved the salted carmel ice cream and the Italian kit kat for dessert. Sean was our waiter. He was constantly attentive and responsive. Scott in the kitchen also gets a special mention. Managers Sherri and Chris greeted us, checked in during the meal, and made a point of seeing us out, all despite being clearly busy on a Friday night. No hesitation to recommend Birrotecca Baltimore. Everybody deserves a second chance and a Yelp Elite bash at Birroteca seemed like the perfect opportunity to try this hot spot again. This time I had a much better experience. The arancini, pizzas, Kale salad, brussel sprouts and Texas toast with burrata and roasted tomatoes or arugula, fresh Parmesan and prosciutto were delightful with a nice balance of flavors and excellent consistencies. I went in on the recommendation of friends but really had low expectations for what I assumed was a "pizza & beer joint." UHM, NO. WRONG. Birroteca is a sweet, family-style "new Italian" place with top ingredients and rotating daily specials of seasonal and fresh foods.....so enjoyable! The four of us shared two salads (loved the fresh beets and the strawberry with FAVA beans) and two pizzas...I personally preferred the sweet/savory balance of the Duck Duck Goose to the simple prosciutto pie, but all in all I loved their savory crust and well-balanced pizzas. ALSO very surprised by the Budino, which is a dessert blending polenta and Nutella (WHAT?!) with a beautiful Olive Oil Ice Cream (normally NOT my thang, but executed to perfection). Definitely try! Most impressive was the absolutely top notch service -- not overbearing in the least, and attentive to our table in spite of a busy Tuesday evening. Really disappointed overall. I was expecting a lot more based on what I have heard about this restaurant. This was my first time at Birroteca. Met with a group of friends (6 of us total) for dinner. The food was ok, though honestly I'm not convinced it's worth the prices, but the bigger issue was the server for our table. Never told us his name. He was MIA during the majority of our visit. At one point he was behind the bar hanging out with the bartender. At one point he was watching the basketball game that was on. I was trying to get his attention because my appetizer still had not been served, although the rest of my party had already finished theirs (ps I got it after I was half way through my entree). He came over to the table and said "oh yeah I saw you looking at me so I guess you need something." I need you to do your job, sir. We waited almost 40 minutes after we were all clearly done eating for him to bring the check. A different server came back to get our cards. Super rude also. We split our payment between two cards: $60 on one and the remaining balance on the second. Not so hard. She commented, "Are you gonna write that down for me?" I think she was trying to be funny but it was not. Other fails during our experience: one member of my party had to order the same glass of wine twice before she actually got it. And the waiter mocked her for speaking quietly. I was told that the bar didn't have the ingredients to make the first two cocktails I tried to order. My husband ordered a Caesar salad and asked for grilled chicken breast on it and was told that there was no chicken. I understand you're trying to have a certain "foody vibe" with unique choices, but come on, you don't have a chicken breast??? Overall really disappointed. I was expecting something much different and much better. Update: Just got a text message from my friend who was supposed to get charged $60 to her card. She was charged an additional $20. Updating my previous review as a solo diner at the bar on a weeknight, I had a bit of an underwhelming experience overall. I ordered a side of crispy brussel sprouts with coppa, which arrived with one small slice of coppa atop a mile-high pile of sprouts burned to a crisp. I understand the concept, but first was put off by the minimal coppa and second the sprouts left such a lingering bitter aftertaste, I was downing water to try to escape it. A second bartender noticed my disappointment in the lack of coppa and provided a few extra slices for me when I explained my confusion. After being recommended an ill conceived white wine pairing with my pasta dish (burrata ravioli with melted cherry tomatoes and basil) I felt like I had to say something and the same bartender who assisted me prior was very receptive and comped the glass of wine and the bitter sprouts. I indicated that I eaten here before and had a good experience, but couldn't ignore this disappointing meal. He acknowledged my comment and was friendly. Had been wanting to come here for a while and finally came a month or two ago. It wasn't the amazing experience I had hoped for but I loved the interior of the restaurant and the ambiance. Service was friendly and the waitstaff attire is the typical hipster wardrobe... flannels, beards, and glasses. I got the "apple of my eye" martini and it was probably one of the best drinks I've ever had. Perfect for fall. My friend and I both got salads (caesar for me, the chopped kale for my friend) and split the spicy fennel sausage pizza. I kinda hated my salad, the dressing was kind of sour and egg-free so not creamy at all, and my friend liked hers, minus the raisin vinaigrette (why is that a thing?!). The pizza was really good and not intensely spicy. The dessert menu looked enticing but we had already planned on feeding our addiction to the ice cream at the Charmery. Pizza, bruschetta, brussel sprouts (roasted with bacon, BEST THING EVER), big hunks of bread with aioli and prosciutto, caesar salad, and more. Everything was expertly cooked, served hot (and with a big smile), and tasted great. Pizza and pasta my ___! Mussels were good, the gravy was dunkable with the house made bread from pizza dough... Those price sensitive, they charge for bread and you will want a couple orders. The wild boar pappardelle was off the charts. Both the Caesar and beet salads were excellent. Brussels were wonderful. My guests loved the risotto and gnocchi, which j didn't taste as j was way passed stuffed when they and the two pizzas came. Duck pizza and the fennel sausage pie. Ok, we over ordered for 4... Lol. Our waiter "Jason" seemed irritated with us when we asked questions about the menu and talked to us as if we weren't in his "social class". His demeanor was not very professional, yet more like we were wasting his time. The gentleman that brought our food also seemed to be a bit difficult as he made smart remarks to my daughter when she asked for more Parmesan Cheese for her noodles. (but then back tracked, when we asked him to repeat himself and played it off as a joke, but it wasn't funny at all). Bottom line, good food, bad service. The pizza was very good, and the beer selection was also a positive. The Brocollini is a must to try. Have you been here? Craft pizza, craft beer, craft cocktails!?! I come every so often - it's a little off the beaten path, so I sometimes forget about it. It turns out they are great for groups; I hosted an alumni happy hour here, and the server, Dave, was spot on. He had all of our checks perfectly and managed to deal with over 20 separate checks. I don't recommend any of you put your server through that, but he deserves some credit. They have great happy hour specials - $5 beers and wines. Birroteca also has an inspired menu that encourages family style sharing. I went with a charcuterie and cheese plate (surprised?) with prosciutto, copa, an aged cheddar, blue style goat cheese and robiola (soft and creamy like brie). Plenty of bread and fancy toppings that truly enhance the flavors, especially the candied walnuts and the stewed tomatoes - I need to find out where they hide that spice. I also shared in some of the calamari. I think they have THE BEST CALAMARI in the city and possibly best ever. I don't always tell everyone it's not fried, for fear that they will not order it. Its sautéed - in a lemony, garlicky, capery, olive oil. I have never had calamari that has been cooked, not fried and manages avoid being rubbery or tough. They have one hell of a chef. I was super lucky and there were a bunch of folks around who offered to share their pizza. I had nibbles of several different ones. The prosciutto pizza - a slightly spicy red sauce topped with cheese, prosciutto, arugula and melted tomatoes. The sausage pizza is just what is sounds - fantastic spicy fennel sausage on a traditional red sauce and mozz cheese pizza. My favorite of the night is only for us accidental foodies. They call it the Duck, Duck, Goose - there isn't a red sauce on this one - the sauce is a combo of balsamic vinegar, Asiago, fontina, and fig jam. They top this pizza with duck confit and a sunny side up duck egg - whaaaaa?! Go. Go Now. Get that pizza. You might wanna play that kids game while you wait, but as soon as the pizza arrives, you will be moving quickly into musical chairs. read more

We loved the intensely craft beer friendly MD Beer-loving vibe but it was certainly more heightened than usual with the HomebrewCon in town. We were squeezing this place between stops & had just had a big meal so we only made room for a meat/cheese board and a couple beers. Our server Christine was beyond adorable. Burroteca Is one of the better pizza places in the Hampden area. We arrived early through a booking on Open Table and were quickly seated. The atmosphere is definitely cottage / industrial with close tables and mellow lighting in the main dining room. Not bad at all. Food-wise, we ordered the Double D and Prosciutto pizzas that were very tasty. We also ordered the kale salad that ended up being soggy and drenched with house dressing (this we returned after two attempts to get it corrected). The GM made a great recovery by asking us about our concern, apologizing and using the feedback for the kitchen. All in all, the experience and food was pretty good. We went on a Saturday night and had a very nice dining experience. We started with the eggplant fries and the grilled calamari. Both were excellent. The calamari was some of the most tender I have ever had. For our main course we both had the clam pasta, which was very tasty, and a goat cheese and ricotta cheese cake. The service was very courteous, attentive and prompt even though there was a large party next to us. My only complaint was that the main courses came out a bit too quick while we were still eating our appetizers. Other than that, the evening was spotless. read more

I would suggest calling ahead and making a reservation. The beer selection was very good with an excellent draft list. This place is just ok as far as food. The service was wonderful. It was a little loud inside. I had the eggplant fries which I liked. I also had the mushroom pizza. I love mushrooms and pizza but this pizza was cooked to long. The bottom was burned. Every bite all I could tastes was the burned bottom. I also didn't taste any sauce. Have been here a couple of times now so this is a mish mash of our visits. Once with a group of 6 on a friday night (they put us on the bar side and it was very crowded and noisy). The other time on a monday (table for 2 on dining side. Quieter and much quicker service as you would expect). The calamari (I normally like them fried but this sauteed version is awesome) and mussels for appetizers were the big hits with the group. The meatballs were very pretty on the plate though they came out on the cool side. For an entree I had the Pappardelle (wild boar bolognese) which was very tasty and rich with flavor. On the pizza side we liked the Duck duck goose, Margherita and Spicy Fennel Sausage. The Prosciutto could've benefited from a little red sauce as it is pretty salty. The wine and beer selections are of a decent variety and a good compliment to the food offered. If it were a little less expensive we would be back again and again. read more
