Went on a Friday night without a reservation, which I won't do again. We were fortunate enough to get the only table they don't reserve, which was potentially by a drafty door, but it didn't matter to us. So, word to the wise, make a reservation! Cool place, pizza quality apparently depends on the night. I was part of a party of 5 on a Tuesday night. For 3 us, it was the first time. Same day reservation was impossible if we wanted a table before 8:30pm, so it's a popular place! Staff was accommodating since we got there 1.5 hours early--hung out at bar and was seated off to the side of the bar at around 7:45, so they helped us out. Apps were outstanding (brussel sprouts, wow), the pizza was "ah". Our friends who had been before said it was better last time. Not enough cheese, crust mediocre (too hard? thick? whatever, it was not a standout at all). The speakers directly above you if seated in the bar-adjacent tables are terrible if you want to have a conversation. Cool vibe, great service, get the pizza up to snuff, guys! read more

I went to Birroteca for the first time this past Saturday, and I doubt I'll be back for a second try. The food was decent, but the service was laughably bad. The server that I *think* was actually assigned to our table came by for the first time when my wife and I had been seated for five minutes, and promptly spilled water all over my phone by foolishly pouring the bottle one-handed. People, don't get acrobatic if you don't have the dexterity to pull it off! Servers came by our table seemingly at random, at irregular intervals, half the time bringing another party's food to us. ("Did you have the bruschetta? No? Okay." "Margherita pizza here? No? Okay.") We spent a full twenty minutes once our party was complete waiting for someone - anyone! - to come by to take an order. Once the dishes arrived - always delivered by someone new - we were left on our own. During this time, I noticed the same thing happening throughout the dining area: servers seemed to have no idea what table had ordered what, and had to keep stumbling through a poorly arranged dining space hunting for the right party. (I saw one poor schmo drop an order of bruschetta on the floor after trying to squeeze himself between two patrons sitting millimeters away from each other.) They could have made a lot more money off of us by coming around at a reasonable point to ask if anyone wanted another drink or dessert, but of course, it was hard to tell if anyone considered our table their responsibility. We waited a good fifteen minutes or more between when we got the check and when we finally got up and sought out someone to take the check and process the payment. Just about every server in the restaurant seemed to have disappeared, and it was hours before the place was scheduled to close. The only employee we could even find was the hostess, who was very busily smoothing a tablecloth five feet away from us for a very long time without lifting her head to make eye contact with anyone. We walked out feeling pissed and poorly treated, and amazed that a place that operated so incompetently seemed to be so popular. read more

Great happy hour pit stop! Despite going to Birroteca a couple of times now I still haven't gotten pizza. It remains on my to-do list. The mussels are great, though a significantly smaller portion than off the happy hour list. I personally think it's worth it to just order the full appetizer because you will want more. Sadly, the brussels aren't on the Baltimore location's happy hour menu. All around great service, large space and tasty food. I highly recommend! read more

Getting to this place was very interesting... the location is very misleading. I had never been here but will certainly go back next time I travel to Baltimore. The beer selection is great and the staff is very nice. The menu is great, too! I ordered one mushroom pizza from the specials menu and it was excellent. The ambiance here is wonderful. The building has such character! It is comfortable, the kind of place you want to spend all evening sitting and enjoying food and good company. The service was wonderful. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food is spectacular! The pizza crust is crunchy and chewy and the toppings are delicious but also unique. We ordered the octopus as an appetizer and it was cooked perfectly plus those capers are so tasty! Everything we had was well seasoned and well presented. We ordered a few things and finished everything but didn't feel too heavy or full after. The one con I can think of is that the restaurant boasts that it is family friendly but they don't have a changing table in the bathroom. There is even room for it but they didn't install one. When I asked about this they put me upstairs to change my baby on an empty table since they weren't using that area. Talk about uncomfortable! It was really disappointing. read more

Made a last minute decision on Friday night for a late dinner and ended up at Birrotecca. I had been back when they first opened and hadn't been blown away by the meal but was craving Italian and wanted to give them another chance. We didn't order any drinks but the beer menu was impressive. We shared the calamari and beef tartare to start. The calamari was phenomenal. Just the right texture and an awesome flavor thanks to the lemon and capers. The tartar, while fantastic looking was not my favorite. It had a very strong citrusy flavor, which while good on the first few bites, became a little overpowering for a bigger portion. Not to say it wasn't a good dish and I think that others may like it a lot more than I did. For our entrees my girlfriend got the Margherita pizza and I got the orecchiette. Both were fantastic. I especially loved the pasta as the sauce and asparagus really made it an awesome dish. I snuck a slice of the pizza as well and it was very good. Overall I was really happy with the meal there and will be back. read more

Great food, but really noisy and packed on weekends. Came here for my husband's birthday on a Saturday night for first time. We were astonished by the amount of people and noise here when we just came in, and it is hard to find the server to give us the table. After we finally sat down, we still can't believe how noisy a restaurant can get. My husband is a quiet person and he didn't like the place at first impression. Ordered a cocktail for him, and we shared the crispy cauliflower, wild boar pappardelle and the famous duck duck goose pizza. The food was surprisingly good and that cheered us a little bit, especially the wild boar pappardelle, amazingly good! Next time would bring our friends here and dry their signature duck legs dish. The disappointment mainly came from the noise level and the service, I asked for something special for my husband, but clearly no one paid attention to my special request, no one even said a happy birthday to him! Disappoint! Also the restaurant should probably offer a quiet dining area because clearly not everyone is compatible with noise when dining great food. read more

I have had reason to go back here twice in the last month and they have definitely changed my opinion. It still isn't a go to place, but they have relaxed a little and it's at least more enjoyable. Dishes are good quality ingredients, even if the execution is a little off sometimes. Drinks are good and the bartenders that I've had more recently have been very friendly and knowledgeable. The prices are a bit high in my opinion (like more comparable to NY or D.C. than what I expect here, for what you get) but they have some really good specials so I would just be mindful of that. read more

I'm a fan of this place - attentive service, and just a really cool and cozy vibe. Their pizza is delicious - especially recommend the Duck Duck Goose or the Eggplant Parm. I've been to location in Bel Air several times and the one in clipper Mill there times. I like the fact that the menus are a bit different. The bartenders in Belair are friendly and the happy hour is great. Brussel sprouts appetizer is delicious. The muscles or served with chunks of fried bread to soak up the delicious sauce, this is a brilliant idea. The selection of cheeses and meats on the starter board never disappoints me. My girlfriend and I sat at the bar due to a full dining room on a Sunday night. From the hostess to the bartenders, and the manager, everyone was friendly and aimed to please. The food was great, the atmosphere very nice, and employees clearly cared! What more could you ask for. The only thing is the bar is too high for my taste compared to the barstools. The food was really good. We had the Calamari which was cooked perfectly. The meatball pizza , the crust was amazing. The sauce was good the only complaint on the $18 pizza was that there was a quarter of a meatball slice on each piece. Not much to it. The dessert we had was the Nutella Polenta Budina. I have no clue what Budina is however the dessert with the olive oil and sea salt ice cream it was heavenly . The atmosphere was crowded and a bit loud. When we left my husband actually asked why my voice was cracking, I felt like I just left a concert we had to speak so loudly to the other 2 people at our 4 top table. I have been here four times, most recent was for my 11 year old daughters birthday. Like clockwork she orders the steak tartar with extra crostini's and every time it is delicious. I have tried several dishes from here which all have been amazing. One dish the duck liver on toast dish was haphazard. At first our party (7) needed to make a adjustment from 6 to 7 people. This was for a Sunday snowy day and was told they couldn't add another person. I had to call back and speak with someone else because this made no sense to me. When we arrived we were put in a the bar at a high top, the restaurant was half empty and asked to be moved since the reservation was made for a 11 year olds birthday. These folks are doing food right. Our table ordered the risotto, bolognase, papparadelle with a boar ragu and a pizza and all were fabulous. I was really, really excited to visit Birroteca. It's so hard to find good Italian restaurants, but all the rave reviews had me believe it was worth taking the risk to come here. It wasn't as perfect as I was hoping it to be, but I still had a great meal. We started with the argula salad. Grapes and fennel were a great combo, but there was hardly any cheese on it, which was a little sad. The cured meat plates we ordered (duck prosciutto with figs & saltimbocca) tasted good, but there were way too many ingredients on the plate. The flavors were overwhelming and you could barely taste the meat. Duck prosciutto is a salumi obsession of mine, and unfortunately theirs was underwhelming, even when eaten by itself. We weren't super hungry so we decided to split a lighter pasta--the parmesan spaetzle with shaved snails. This was SO unassumingly delicious. Even though I wasn't hungry, I probably could have eaten the whole plate by myself. It was that good. The pasta was cooked properly al dente. If you think it is undercooked...well, it's not. You're just used to overcooked Olive Garden slop. This is what pasta is supposed to taste like. Although there were some missteps, the pasta was so good that it makes me want to try more on the menu. Duck Duck Goose - best of the three plates, but overly sweet and no integration, thin tough crust, oily duck contrasting the dryness of the bland cheese. 2.) Beef Tartare - Call it "Beef " instead. Not tartare, and I couldn't eat this. Too much crème freche and parmesan leaves the beef tasting old and funky. The meat was stringy and tough to chew, then swallow, which I didn't. 3.) Bianco - Bland cheese is flavorless and rubbery, toasted plastic mozzarella. Crust is thin and tough. All of it one sloppy texture, old and deflated looking.. where does the cheese end and crust begin? I prefer any Stouffers french bread pizza. read more

This place is packed on the weekends. Finally got a reservation on Sat night (9:00 pm). They were booked completely the week before. Tried some new things. We ordered for the table to share. The highlights were the arincini and the salumi and cheese boards. We ordered two pizzas, but they took over an hour to arrive. The waitress comped us without asking. Major props for keeping the customers happy without them complaining. Throw in great customer service with all this place offers and the sky is the limit . This place keeps getting better.
