So naturally when it came time for my staffs holiday outing this place came to mind. They truly have something for everyone on their menu. This go around we ordered a little of everything. Spicy Fennel Sausage Pizza...savory, cheesy, spicy goodness Duck Duck Goose Pizza...sweet, savory, cheesy and tangy goodness Proscuitto Bruschetta w/ Arugula, Lemon Aioli & Parmesan...toasted, savory, tangy goodness Meatballs...so good I couldn't eat just one... Duck duck goose pizza was oddly sweet, but very unique. The steak was a bit tough and impossible to cut with the bitter knives we had. I did like the Italian kit kat dessert! I came here with my girlfriend for brunch during restaurant week (greatest weeks of the year in my opinion). I had found this spot online, and wanted to check it out, so what better time than restaurant week! You had the option of a first course or dessert and a main entrée. I went with the Burrata Cheese Bruschetta and the French Toast. The bruschetta was DELICIOUS! I'm a sucker for a good bruschetta, and I typically order it any time I see it on a menu. It was definitely different from a typical bruschetta, as the tomatoes were cooked down a bit and the cheese was slightly creamy. It was a good different though, as the tomatoes tasted fresh and vibrant and the cheese was a perfect compliment. The bread provided some contrasting crunch to the mostly cream bite. The French toast was on the sweeter side, and I would have liked some fresh berries/fruits to accompany it, but it had a nice golden brown and crispy exterior with a soft inside. You could taste just a hint of vanilla, which is one of my favorite flavors used in French toast. My girlfriend got the Italian Kit Kat, which seems to be one of their signature desserts from other reviews I had read. This thing was incredible, as it tasted exactly like a kit kat, but more upscale as you could tell it was all natural ingredients used. I'm excited to try this place out again for dinner. It's tucked away in a pretty secluded location, but the interior was decorated very nicely and it had a warm atmosphere with a friendly staff. The grilled octopus was tender and flavorful (though slightly on the salty side), and the citrus in the accompanying potato salad was an unexpected but welcome twist. The duck duck goose pizza was slightly sweet (which we were warned about) and very savory. The egg yolk was still runny, the duck confit was melt-in-your-mouth, and the crust was crispy, slightly chewy, and properly seasoned. I would say that the crust here is the best I've had in years (better than Paulie Gees, Verde, Iggies, etc). I usually hate eating the crust but this place may have converted me. Service-wise, we had an amazing server (Allyson) who took great care of us. The food came out quickly despite the restaurant being fairly packed. Yo snap, I love birroteca. Came with a girlfriend for happy hour on my last night in Baltimore and it was so fabulous and I think about the pizza we ate there every time I eat pizza. The happy hour specials were excellent. I think $5 house wines, including prosecco. INCLUDING PROSECCO. I know the photo I posted was a rosé but that was just the first. I'm sure I posted a snap of the prosecco but who wants to admit to having several drinks at happy hour in a permanent location? Not this one. Just the one for me, thanks. Oh also, helpful tip: happy hour is up at the bar. You can't sit down for happy hour. We split the bruschetta before our pizza. Flavors=fab. Insta=perfect. My only silly complaint was that the grape tomatoes were mostly whole and I like taking small bites and it was hard to eat like that without the whole thing falling apart. I'm not saying don't get it because you'll regret that more. But be prepared to take big bites with your big girl mouth. And the pizza. Oh lord. We had the cippola. I don't know how to pronounce it. I'm sorry. I'm not the kind of person who likes to ask those questions. But this pizza was so good, friends. The meat was excellent. The cheese, melty. And it was huge. We had so much left over. After dropping my friend off, I ate a slice on the way home and it was still excellent. And even the next day, cold (yes I am that person), it filled my heart and belly. The sausage and pancetta? Birroteca, tucked inside of a building of which seems like a large wooden warehouse, is dark, made of exposed brick, and seems to exude a trendy vibe. The restaurant is a perfect example of how outward appearances can be deceiving, and the ambience gives off a sense that within this giant warehouse, a sense of intimacy can be created in the restaurant. One almost feels as if they've discovered a secret, if not for the giant logo on the warehouse that displays the restaurant name. Given the trendy interior, however, I've concluded that the establishment is trend without a lot of substance. The food is good, don't get me wrong - but I don't think it's good enough for them to charge the prices they gave. There are more restaurants in the area that will give you just as good quality food without the expensive price tag. My friend's sister made the reservation for a big party (~10) and we waited for about 10-15 minutes past our reservation while they prepped the table, which is ok for such a large group. Our waitress, Lucy, provided excellent service - she was patient about explaining the menu options, split ALL of our checks (a huge amount of effort), and was very nice! Now the food - I got the grilled peaches salad, which is about appetizer size, for $14. The peaches were really good - grilled and tender, the peaches have a magnified floral sweetness that raw peaches simply cannot compare. On top was balsamic, whose acidity cuts the sweetness. However, I did find the greens underdressed, and the pecans on the dish were not candied (which I think could have helped address the bitterness that radicchio and arugula have). The Gorgonzola was perfect. My friend and I split a simple margherita pizza. The sauce is a good kind of sweet - like tomatoes at peak season, not the kind of sauce that gets doused with sugar. The tomatoes were blistered and cooked well, and the mozz cheese was well browned. However, I'm confused by the crust - it was quite bread-like, even though the center of the pie was thin enough to feel like pizza. It was good, but simply not good enough to justify the $18 price tag. I've had better quality pizza with fresh ingredients for less. Overall, I think this is a great place to do a date night - it's beautiful and romantic, but in a way that's not pretentious and more casual than a 3 Michelin started restaurant. To me, the environment is a perfect representation of Italian sentiment - complex, mysterious, and again, romantic, yet enough remembrance of common, simple Italian ingredients that makes it feel like home. Just be prepared to shell out more than a couple dollars worth for the food., and keep in mind that there are plenty of other places with quality food with less fuss. My partner and I had wanted to check Birroteca out for awhile and finally made it there for happy hour. First of all, let me say- their happy hour is AMAZING! Great prices and excellent food. We started out with a bourbon/diet coke and a glass of rose to sip on as we perused the menu. It was a bit quiet in there for 5pm on a Friday, but it started to pick up towards the end. We enjoyed the burrata bruschetta first... it was delicious. We were so impressed. Next, we had the meatballs. My partner loved them- while still good, I'd say this was actually my least favorite of the dishes we enjoyed. Lastly, we had the chef's choice charcuterie board (see photo). SO GOOD! For around $35, we had enough food to be our dinner and a drink each. Service was great and we loved the decor. Parking was plentiful as well. Wow. Where to start! First off, this restaurant is huge! I didn't know where to check-in. I went on a Thursday night and it was packed so do yourself a favor and make reservations. They have a variety of different cocktails, wine and beer. For appetizers, I had the meatballs, Brussels sprouts and eggplant fries. I usually get meatballs at every Italian restaurant and sad to say, I was a bit disappointed. The meatballs we're small, not juicy and definitely not flavorful. I did like the marinara it came with though. The Brussels sprouts are amazing!! Perfectly crispy and prepared and it's topped with prosciutto. You can tell these are fried, but they're not too oily. And omg I've had eggplant fries at a restaurant in l.a. before, but these are not comparable. They are perfectly sliced thin, breaded and fried. Love the sauce it comes with too! On to the meal. Shared the duck confit and spicy Italian pizzas. Can I just say, I typically don't eat the crust on pizzas, but these crusts tasted like a mix between crackers and breadsticks. Everyone on yelp said to try the duck confit, but in my opinion it was overhyped. It was a bit too sweet for my liking, I'll just leave it at that. I liked all the meats on the spicy Italian and I did like how it wasn't too spicy, what I didn't like was that it was too salty. I needed to drink like two cups of water after each slice. Whatever you do, save room for desert. My friends got the cannoli- comes with three mini ones. They seemed to like it. I got the infamous kit kat and let me say, it was thank worth it and I should have ordered two. It's like two big logs of ferrero rocher. Yum!!! Came here on a Saturday night and found a seat at the bar. The bar was busy, so it took a little for someone to take our orders and service was a bit slow. There was a good beer list, and we ordered as salad and pizza to share. The salad was delicious- lemon thyme dressing and kale, bright and fresh. We had a honey belly pizza which was delicious- a crisp crust, not too much cheese and a perfect blend of sweet and spicy. Came here as a party of 8 (including 2 toddlers) to celebrate a birthday. We were immediately seated at a table, complete with booster seats. Our server was wonderful and so patient, and one of the big reasons I'm giving this 4 stars. Service was fantastic. The food came out quickly. I tried the house wine cocktail (can't recall the name, but similar to a crush) in the lemon flavor. Really good! Partner enjoys beer and there was a wide selection. Kids menu had multiple options even for the picky eaters. We ordered a margarita pizza, which was hot and good, and a great size to share. Also tried the meatball appetizer, which was very good. Some additional pluses: Baltimore City follows more strict COVID protocol which this restaurant also follows (so everyone was masked and they required masks upon entry); ample free parking; great place to go before the Hampden Christmas lights; very clean. I went here with my fiancée's family for a night out. There were 8 adults present including myself and my fiancée. Our waiter was incredibly attentive and friendly, making excellent recommendations of pizzas to get for the group. First, we ordered roasted Brussel sprouts and salad for the group -- the Brussel sprouts were amazing. We ended up almost getting another portion! We ended up getting several pizzas: Duck Duck Goose, Formaggio, prosciutto,and Cippola. They were all fantastic and were quickly devoured. I particularly liked the Duck Duck Goose pizza. We were really looking forward to trying the food here, but this time around, it was just ok. To be fair, the outdoor seating was nice, and the server was helpful. (FYI - this was a pre-pandemic visit). Dinner wasn't so good though. Overall - everything sounded / seemed better than it ended up being. Our table tried some of the pizzas -- they just came out greasy and were missing flavor (especially the crust - which I usually like!). The salad we had was ok but not something I'd get again. The sprouts were way too soft and greasy - another miss. I had a bite of my friend's pasta - nothing wrong with it, but just wasn't interesting or much better than what you'd make with fresh pasta at home. Our bill came out to around $50 per person. Really enjoyed the charcuterie. Duck Duck Goose Pizza is a fave. Wild Boar Bolognese a treat. Portions are large to encourage sharing. Specials for two rotate on a daily basis. The menu is like one you'd find in a good restaurant in Rome today. The best thing about this place is how friendly everyone is. Not just the attentive staff but everybody who's eating there too. We've been 3 times and each time we made friends with the tables nearby. The owner Robbin Haas stopped by to visit with us a couple of times and made us feel even more welcome. When I look at the map, and see the location of our lunch destination is down at the ass-end of a hard-scrabble row of old mill buildings and warehouses that I remember as being a bit of a mess in years gone by, I have to admit I'm not encouraged. Here among the barbed-wired yards of a dozen light-industrial businesses is a little stone building with a gravel parking lot. A small sign by the road reads "Birroteca" and larger text on the wall reads "Craft beer and wine". I remember this place as a dive-y tavern for Hampden working families back in the day, selling cold beer at the bar for those who'd finished a day installing industrial plumbing or HVAC systems. What Birroteca delivers, however, is far above and beyond its prior incarnation, location, and outward appearances. The name a take-off on Enoteca - an Italian term for a regional wine shop or wine bar - Birroteca does indeed offer a stout (ha!) selection of regional beers, including a substantial sampling of those from Salisbury, MD's Evolution Brewery. They also offer a number of craft brews by the bottle/can, both in large (22-24oz) and small (12 oz) formats. The surprising thing, however, is the food. Porchetta and dressed fennel salad crudo is a perfect blend of fatty, savory, crunchy, acidic goodness. Bruschetta with roasted cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, and burrata cheese on focaccia is concentrated summer in your face. Seasonal vegetables are used to excellent effect, as with the broiled stuffed zucchini which was hollowed out and filled with cheese, breadcrumbs, brocolli, corn, and other summer goodies. I'm sure the pasta dishes are tasty, but I can't keep from ordering the pizzas here. Seasonal vegetable-pesto, fig-prosciutto-arugula, duck confit with a duck egg on top... all layered on a hand-tossed crispy-thin crust. The crust has a nice char to it, and though thin holds up to the toppings quite well. I struggle to choose between eating it politely with knife and fork, or just grabbing slices and cramming them into my pizza-hole. Every time I've been here, it's been for lunch. So, I have yet to experience the dinner mob-scene that some people have complained about. It's always been moderately busy, but with service that's attentive and helpful. I have no service complaints so far. Appetizers and pizzas are portioned such that they can be shared by two - in fact, two apps and a pizza are a perfect sized lunch for two adults. I personally didn't enjoy the sprouts at all-they mostly just tasted burnt to me and the aioli wasn't that exciting. They also came with some type of pork on the top, which wasn't described on the menu and I don't eat pork so wouldn't have ordered them. Having said that, I understand they're really popular and my friend liked them, plus it was a very generous portion! The pizza was very good-it could have benefited from some type of sauce on the base but we asked for marinara to dip which was the best choice ever! The pizza was dry and the pumpkin gnocchi lacked any real flavor. I'm giving the second star cause desert was good. The real turn was at the end of the meal. This is one place you can get a crispy thin crust. Porcini and melted leeks risotto was filling and cooked perfectly. I found it a bit salty but I do it salt my food. When I think of Birroteca, I think of timing. It's hit or miss. If you come earlier, like around 5-6 PM, seating and service will be great. Come at 7 PM... good luck. The pizza here is decent. I like the fact that Birroteca's thin-crust dough can withstand the toppings it contains (i.e. you can hold the crust at the end of the pizza, and the cheese and toppings won't be falling off). It's relatively sturdy, yet crispy. The only downside is that the crust at the end makes your jaw work a little harder than you'd anticipate. I love the Spicy Fennel Sausage, a classic sausage and mushroom combo. But I was thoroughly impressed with the Duck Duck Goose. I never thought that duck, duck egg, and fig jam on a cheese pizza would work so well together. Be a little adventurous and give it a shot. The appetizers and vegetables aren't too shabby either. I definitely enjoyed the crispy brussel sprouts. Finally, as I mentioned before. Timing is key to superb service. Less business = more attentive, more friendly, and more accommodating service. I've been here a couple of times; the first time for dinner and the second time for lunch. The first thing I immediately noticed was the spelling of the name. I'm not sure how it was meant to be pronounced, but my limited knowledge of Italian tells me to pronounce it as "bir-ro-técha." I hear everyone else call it "bir-ro-teka." Name aside, the service is good and the food is delicious. I highly recommend any of the salads, pizzas, and bruschetta. If you get the charcuterie, be careful with the cheeses. Me and friends get together every few months for dinner, so I try to choose the place wisely. Based off reviews, I thought Birroteca would be a good fit. When I made the reservation, it gave me the option of regular height chairs or a high table. I chose normal chairs. We didn't get that. What we did get was 8 stools among 2 small tables. Not only were we squished at these tables but the table next to us was so close they were constantly bumping into us. The tables in the bar are bolted down, so we weren't able to move them. Had we got to sit at the chairs I requested, we also wouldn't have been seated in the noisy and occasionally aggressively loud bar area and been in the dining room. They couldn't make a dirty martini, not sure how that's possible. They also didn't have a chicken breast to go on my Caesar salad. They offered shrimp instead, which was fine. However they brought the shrimp out ten minutes after my salad came and they were extremely tiny and all stuck together and rubbery like they were microwaved. Mind you they were served to me in a gravy boat, not on the salad. The food was mediocre and forgettable The last thing I want to mention, a friend in our group paid her part of the tab on her card. Upon receiving the receipt she crossed out the tip area and wrote in the total of her bill which was what her meal and drinks cost. My husband and I had already paid the tip portion on our card. However when she checked her bank statement, they charged her an additional $20. Not to mention last time she was there they charged her nearly $400 when her bill wasn't anywhere near that. For appetizers, my table tried some Brussels sprouts, calamari, and bruschetta. There were also two more pizzas and someone tried a pasta dish. Stoped here for lunch on 8/8/2015 with my girlfriend. We got the meatball appetizer followed by the prosciutto pizza as our main dish. My girlfriend got a Mediterranean mule, and I had an old fashioned to drink. Meatball appetizer, this dish was an incredible starter, meatballs were perfectly cooked, and the sauce complimented the meatballs very well 4/5. Old fashioned, this drink is by far one of the best old fashions I've had, it was a perfectl balance between sour and sweet. Most restaurants serve the old fashion way to sweet. By far the drinks served here are some of the best ive had at a restaurant. 5/5 Prosciutto, pizza was composed of fresh crisp ingredients, the crust was cooked to perfection. Perhaps my favorite thing to eat is pizza. And the pizza from Birroteca in Hampden is no different. Fun fact: Birroteca is owned by Robin Haas, the same genius behind another favorite of mine, Nickel Taphouse. A friend and I met for dinner at Birroteca and decided to share a few things. We started with a Caesar Salad, the salad was very traditional and had ciabatta croutons. However I wish the dressing would have been slightly creamier. Next, my friend and I shared an order of the Papperdelle. The pappardelle was topped with wild boar bolognese, and ricotta salata cheese. The pasta was incredibly fresh and you could tell it was homemade, the cheese also added a nice creamy texture to the dish. This was probably one of the best pasta dishes I've had in a while. And lastly, we obviously had to share a pizza, it's what Birroteca is known for after all. We went with the Locavore pizza. The pizza was topped with mushrooms, onions, pecorino, fresh mozzarella, EVOO, and arugula. I'm a huge fan of fresh vegetables on my pizza and this was no exception to the rule. The arugula added a nice freshness and cut through the pizza grease. If you're in Hampden and looking for great craft beer and pizza, Birroteca is sure to satisfy you! read more

I've been to Birroteca twice now for dinner, and have not been disappointed! The atmosphere of the restaurant alone is terrific, delivering a welcoming "at home" vibe with both upstairs and downstairs seating. The servers are friendly and attentive, happy to offer suggestions and accommodate any specific requests. If you are a brussel sprout fan, you will love the restaurant's take, complete with black garlic aioli. The pasta is fresh and well-prepared, the pizzas inventive and flavorful. I celebrated my best friend's birthday here the other night and we all left stuffed and happy. Since we were a larger group we sat in a high top table near the bar. To start off a couple of us ordered the winterberry Moscow mule. Our waitress told us that they make their ginger beers in-house so I was really intrigued. The mule came in a cute glass in a bucket of ice. It was tasty, but on the sweeter side so I probably could only drink one or two. I split an appetizer of the calamari with my friend and it was really good. Normally I don't really like unbreaded calamari but this one was very flavorful and cooked just right. I also split the Duck Duck Goose pizza with a friend. This might be one of my top 5 favorite pizzas! It had duck Confit, fig-onion jam, balsamic, fontina & asiago and a duck egg in the center. And it was the perfect size to split with someone. And after dinner our waitress brought over a complimentary birthday dessert for my friend. Service was on point throughout dinner.
