Our friends in Baltimore brought us here for dinner and I like how the place look like. It reminds me of Brooklyn and this neighborhood looks like in the process of gentrification. I didnt get the chance to photos because I was in charge of pacifying the kids. My older child is on my phone playing roblox while the younger is in i-want-to-color-with-crayons mode. So, we had the Brussel Sprouts, Crispy Pork Belly, Calamari Plancha, Arugula Salad, NY Steak, Artisan Pizza Puttanesca and some kids menu for the young one. Despite the cool and wet weather in Baltimore we decided to hang out on their covered patio outdoors as a precautionary measures to covid. The staffs are nice and attentive and we all enjoyed the food but I wasn't able to try some of their craft beer since I am the designated driver and it is like 40 minutes drive back to the hotel in PA. Good food, good place, good friends, and good conversation is all it takes to make it a memorable place to visit. Looking to visit again in the future. read more

I have only been here a couple times, but every time I stop in I'm impressed by the quality of the food. This quality doesn't come cheap, but portions are generous. A friend an I split a pizza and a large format beer for dinner and it was very satisfying. Every time I eat here I wonder why I don't come by more often. My friend and I came here for happy hour and had an excellent time! We sat at the bar, and our bartender (as well as the other staff at the bar) were incredible - so fun to talk to and super attentive. I love that they do 10 oz pours; it enabled me to try three different Evolution Brewing drafts which were all great. We also shared two of the happy hour snacks - the brussels sprouts and the burrata bruschetta. The brussels sprouts were pretty good but nothing special; however, the bruschetta was incredible. With such an extensive draft list and excellent service, I have a feeling this will become a favorite spot of mine for happy hour! read more

Loved this place. Felt like I was in rural Italy. Their happy hour is pretty awesome, I got grapefruit and vodka which was refreshing. Let me just say that Birroteca is hands down one of my favorite restaurants. When I got the news that they were open again after closing for almost 8 months due to Covid, I was ecstatic. For starters, let's address Covid concerns. This is one of the few restaurants that I deemed safe enough to eat inside and here's why. They direct all traffic to one door where upon entry you must use a sanitized pen to sign your name for contact tracing, while wearing your mask of course. After signing in, they take your temperature. Now we all know that you could have Covid and not have symptoms but I give them a thumbs up for trying to stay safe. All the employees had on mask and I would like to point out they were actually wearing them properly to cover their nose and mouth. After signing in, we were taken to an empty dining room. Our server for the evening did not seem bothered and played along with some friendly banter as I openly displayed my excitement. I also want to mention that they use paper table cloths that they change between each patron of course. Each table also has hand sanitizer which allowed me to sanitize constantly in between eating and playing tic tac toe on the paper cloth. We started with some wings. I admit that they brought me the wrong kind at first. The only reason it's still 5 star is because they were delicious and I actually didn't like the ones I did order. Good thing they let me keep them both. I ordered the risotto which was quite tasty. It was not the creamy cheesy goodness I had hoped for as it was tomato based instead, but it was still very tasty. I also tried the apple cake dessert which was amazing, I just didn't care for the kick that came with the cinnamon sauce. The cake was the perfect texture and paired very well with the ice cream. The manager and our server came and asked how we liked all of our courses. They asked for suggestions and let us know that they would ask the chef to make changes for the next wave of folks. We were treated extremely well and the food was delicious. We will be back. I highly recommend people support them. Came here for a Saturday night dinner with a girl friend. We started off with a bottle of wine - they have an extensive list and it's very reasonably priced (our bottle was probably only up charged $20 from what it would be at the wine store)! Our app, the arugula salad with mushrooms, was huge and very flavorful. It compliments the pasta and pizza very well. For the entrees we split the wild boar pappardelle and mushroom pizza that we added salumi to. I enjoyed both of them but, wasn't blown away by either and felt like they both could've been heated up more. Overall, 4 stars because the food and service was good but, wouldn't make the top of my list for Italian food. read more

Can't decide between bar-like hipster atmosphere and charmingly romantic dinner? Well, you get the best of both worlds here! The bar area also has high top seating tables for a fun night out, or you can opt for the classic romantic Italian restaurant feel by choosing a table in the dining area. Located a few miles away from Inner Harbor in the suburbs of Baltimore, Birroteca was the place to be this past Saturday night. We made a reservation for 8p through OpenTable, but arrived early; although there was a few tables available, we were unfortunately not seated. It wasn't until 40 minutes later when I asked for an update that the hostess decided to seat us at one of the tables that had been open since we arrived... The hostess stated she thought we looked comfortable at the bar so she didn't bother us? For dinner, we decided to share the garlic bread and a pie of pizza. I'd give the garlic bread a 4/5 - soft bread, garlicky, with just the right amount of cheese. The Margherita pizza's sauce and toppings were flavorful, but the crust was highly disappointing for this gal. The dough was slightly soggy on the first bite and the crust was too chewy for my liking - 2/5 stars for the 'za. Coming from the NY area, I may be slightly spoiled by delicious pizza so this just didn't cut it for me. The service was nothing remarkable - a bit forgetful and non-existent at times. I was also a tad disappointed looking at the check and seeing that we were charged $3 for onions on the pizza because the menu said meatballs are $3 as well... I just can't fathom how those toppings are comparable in price. read more

Most apps in the $10-13 range. 5 star food at reasonable prices! However, the service was lack luster. Seemed like one waitress was covering all of the main dining room herself. She may have been. But she was also chatting/joking a little to much and not exactly hustling. Our group of four would have had another 2 rounds of drinks and dessert if we were not waiting with empty drinks for a quarter of our evening. Raise the prices. Hire more staff. I love this place! It has become my go-to after seeing a Sunday matinee at the Hippodrome Theater downtown. The Duck Duck Goose Pizza is my favorite. It's loaded with duck confit, fontina asiago cheese, balsamic glaze, fig-onion jam, and stopped with a duck egg. I could eat the pizza crust just smeared with the fig jam, it's incredibly delicious! The Margherita Pizza is also very good. You can also specialize any order so I added sausage for an extra kick of flavor. My friend got the Handmade Pappardelle which looked very tasty. It was chocked full of wild boar bolognese and parmesan cheese. I shared the gigantic Caesar Salad, but was a bit disappointed in that the romaine lettuce had begun to brown and didn't look too fresh. It didn't stop me from eating it all up though because it was still very good and I was starving. Overall a pretty good place. We came for my bday a few nights ago. We ordered the calamari and Brussels sprouts for an appetizer. The Brussels stole the show!! They were one of the best things of the night. Our waiter recommended the crispy cauliflower and said it was even better than the Brussels-- we'll have to try that next! We ordered pizzas and pastas to share as a table (the waiter recommended we do family style). We got lamb gnocchi, crab carbonara, duck duck goose pizza, and pork belly pizza. I was gonestly not so impressed with the pasta. The lamb ragu with the gnocchi was good but the gnocchi texture was too soft, and the crab carbonara noodles weren't done enough (I felt like Goldilocks, one was too soft one was not done enough lol). BUT the pizzas were really delicious and made up for the pastas. I'd go back for happy hour but I don't think I'd go for dinner again. If I did, I'd def go the pizza route over pasta! read more

We ordered the duck pizza to split and while there was plenty it just wasn't palatable (it had such a thick layer of that intensely sweet fig jam you can get at most supermarkets, combined with the not nearly done egg, not enough cheese, and the richness of the confit was just too too too much). We had one of those specials the crab bruschetta. Not how I would make but was good though some might not like the peppers as the bit of spice did overwhelm the subtle crab taste a bit. My risotto was good though If blindfolded and did not know from the menu would not have guessed eating duck liver. Bolognese was standard though pasta tasted like it was not mass manufactured dry type. Service was okay though the entrees came like 5 minute after the starter so barely was finishing it. Drove here from NY, as a pit stop before getting to VA. Was going to go somewhere else but Birrotecca has pretty good reviews and the Duck Duck Goose pizza really caught our attention. We called 20 minutes before we arrived to order takeout (just the pizza) and when we got there, it was there waiting for us so I was worried it would be cold but it was still hot! What a pleasant surprise. I will preface this upcoming review though - we were super hungry and got there around 1:30 pm but regardless, delicious! The fig and onion jam was just .. decadent *chefs kiss*, especially in contrast with the delicious duck meat and umami of the rich duck egg yolk. I will say the pizza was quite sweet and I did love it because I'm a sucker for sugar but I could see how someone might not like it because of how sweet it was. The two reasons I'm giving four stars and not five are: the bottom crust was just not there for me. It started hurting our jaws to chew so much by the third slice (good thing because we were almost done) and the cheese was kind of hard and dry. If there was more or if it spent a minute or two less in the oven, it would be perfect. It was amazing and a perfect portion to share. I loved the crispness and saltiness if the bread that it was served with. For our entree, we ordered the Formaggio Pizza which was that perfect balance of sweet and savory. Finally got to try Birroteca after living so close to it for so long. All I can say is that I wish I made it over here sooner! My favorite item here is their Brussels Sprouts. They're roasted to perfection, making them satisfyingly crispy, warm, and a little spicy due to being tossed with chili oil. They come with a black garlic aoili on the side which is so creamy and flavorful. They're also topped with coppa, adding even more flare to this already amazing dish. I also loved their charcuterie board, which came with fresh local and seasonal selections. Their cocktails are great and carefully constructed! I e heard great things about their pizza so I am excited to try that next time. My roommate and I agreed this spot will be added to our list of go to post work happy hour spots! read more

I came here once before for a Yelp Elite event years ago. Always said I'd come back. Finally did for my birthday. It was fantastic. The service was prompt and friendly. Aside from the music in the bar being a hair too loud there was a really good vibe. Food was amazing. My sister and I split the Caesar which was perfect for two people and very fresh. I got the wild mushroom bolognase (which I've totally spelled wrong). There was nothing left on my plate. Very rich and meaty. Pasta perfectly cooked. My sister got the orchiette pasta which I also can't spell. Ditto above on cleaning the plate. Our husbands got the duck duck goose pizza. Two of them so there would be left overs. There were barely any. Such a rich and decadent pizza. Which is not how you usually describe pizza. Dessert was the Italian kit Kat, Nutella cheesecake, chocolate cake, peanut butter torte. All were delicious but the cheesecake and PB torte were favs. Such a great beer list now that I'm a big sour beer fan. Can't wait to go back. read more

Birroteca is a place for overly priced artisanal pizza. The ambiance is great and they have a nice bar area. We went straight for the pizza and ordered the pistachio pesto and the prosciutto. Pistachio pesto with pork belly and roasted bell pepper - tasted the pistachio and that's all I tasted, it was on the heavy side and I don't recommend. Prosciutto with cherry tomatoes, fennel, and arugula - enjoyed this one with the saltiness from the prosciutto, crunch from the fennel, and bitterness from the arugula. I'm a sucker for arugula or basil as a topping. One pizza is enough for sharing between two people but you got to do it for the Yelp. I wouldn't come back anytime soon. It's a nice place to come back to once in awhile. Catch me with extra cash at your local Papa John's for pizza. read more

What initially started off as a mediocre start to dinner finally made its way to a 3.5 star experience. I came here last night with 4 other friends, and we were excited to visit as we had heard good things about their food. We ordered: - Tuna Crudo w/Yuzu, Mustard Oil with Pickled Watermelon Radish ($14): 3.5 stars. The cuts of fish were not the most beautiful in terms of presentation (different sizes, unclean edges), but the flavors were quite light and refreshing. The sprinkle of salt on each of the tuna slices really accentuated the flavors of the fish, and the kick of the horseradish was fun as well. - Salmon tartar w/Duck fat crackers ($13) - did not try myself, but presentation was nice. - Seared Cauliflower "agro dolce" ($8): 3 stars. You get a decent portion size for the price, which I appreciated. However, the dish did not come out warm and the cauliflower was quite soggy... which to me took away the point of the sear. I suspect that it was sitting out while the other dishes were being prepared. - Orecchiette w/ duck liver, cipollini onions, sweet peas white wine, thyme, parmesan ($19): 3.5 stars. I tried a bite of this. Good flavors, a bit muddled for my taste but the flavors were creamy without being overwhelmingly so. - Duck Duck Goose pizza w/duck confit, fig-onion jam, balsamic, fontina and asiago, duck egg ($19): 4 stars. Probably my favorite dish of the night. The highlight for me was the fig-onion jam, which was delectably sweet without overwhelming the other flavors of the pizza. The duck egg on one of the dishes was overcooked so the yolk was hard, which was unfortunate. I also really liked the crust on the pizzas! Surprisingly flavorful and nicely crispy. - Mushroom pizza ($19) - did not try, but the general consensus was that the duck duck goose was better. Now onto the service (initially 1 star, bumped up to 3), which almost (and still kind of) singlehandedly ruined my experience here. The food took a while (and by a while, I mean over an hour) to come out, which is unacceptable no matter how busy an establishment is. To make things worse, our waitress was not apologetic at all. When we asked about our food, her response was "well everybody else is waiting too." Great... good to know. But not my problem. We fortunately had nothing to make later in the evening so the wait was not unmanageable, but we were getting really antsy and it wasn't until the manager came over and apologized that I felt better about waiting. He seemed very sincere, which I really appreciated and even gave us 20% off on our bill to compensate for the wait. Overall, food was good, but not waiting for over an hour good. But I would be willing to come back if someone wanted to check it out again. Basically: FOOD = 3.5 stars, SERVICE = 3. read more

Returned here a second time last night and ordered the same thing as my first experience: the calamari and the prosciutto pizza. So I can't speak to the other dishes, but these two are amazing. The calamari is so exceptional that my friend was astounded. It has a lovely al dente texture like pasta and is served with olive oil and seasoning, which is so different from your typical fried calamari app. And the prosciutto pizza is enough to share for two if you're not super hungry. Delicious fresh flavors and crispy, yet chewy crust. The atmosphere is so perfect for an escape from the city. It's a little building tucked away on the outskirts of Hamden. Very charming. It has a really intimate feeling interior and I was happy sitting either at the bar or regular seating. The fig and thyme cocktail I had was delicious as well- sweet and fizzy! And our waitress was great too. Very professional! Overall, I'm definitely going to return. I have to try some other dishes. Update: still love it! Tried the prosciutto bruschetta (anything they make with prosciutto is delicious) and the pizza with olives and capers was yummy too!! (Prosciutto is better.) read more

Definitely need to update my review to 5 stars. I gave 4 stars last time mainly due to somewhat inattentive service. However, Ashley went above and beyond to take care of us last weekend! She was very attentive, gave great recommendations (two thumbs up for the cup of balsamic!), and was extremely personable. She saw that we were hitting up the on site Pokestop and dropped some knowledge on some recent sightings (thanks!). Honestly, she's been one of the best servers I've had in a long time at any dining establishment. Wild Boar Bolognese was delicious as usual. Same goes for the meat and cheese selection. Decided to try the Burrata Bruschetta on this visit... Wow! The cheese was absolutely delicious and the melted tomatoes were so flavorful.
