I appreciate the opportunity to get quality, locally raised meat. I've ordered meat online from Heartstone Farm here in Maine, and have been very pleased with the quality of their products, though it's expensive and everything comes frozen. But I understand that kind of quality will always be more expensive than factory farm meat. So i decided to go to Bisson's farm store recently. It's only open Wed-Friday, so for a lot of working people, it's not convenient to do so. I was impressed with the selection and prices at Bisson's. Because they butcher whole animals, they had some cuts, like Denver Steak, that you won't find in an average butcher shop. The beef and pork I bought were very good, and I'm planning another trip there soon. read more

This is our local meat market these folks are hard working, friendly, and everything is fresh and made on site. If your in the mid coast area you should come check them out. We shop here every couple of weeks and have never purchased anything meat or otherwise that we were not satisfied and enjoyed. read more

People travel from near and far for this market's fresh meat items. They have ground beef, chicken thighs and breasts, bacon, sausage, and kielbasa to name a few. All are prepared at this location and can be cut to a customers preference. They also have frozen meat and chicken pies, cheeses and deli meat in their deli, blocks of butter, local milk and eggs, and spices. The staff are fairly friendly unless you go on a Saturday morning when all have gathered for their weekly stock up. I too would be stressed and hard to humor if I was in their shoes. So go Tuesday-Thursday if you want to by-pass the madness. read more

We were visiting Maine and I needed great meat! Not supermarket meat. Not overpriced Whole Foods (whole Paycheck) meat. We wanted locally sourced grass fed yumminess. So, I Yelped and found this farm/market. We went in and bought porter house, ribeye and T bone steaks, plus, bacon, butter, raw milk, cheddar cheese and strawberries. The steaks were friggin awesome. No marinating needed. Easy breezy: salt, pepper, grill and cut with a butter knife, savoring each bite. The cows are across the street. The butchers are right there if you need to ask them anything. It's a family run business. The bacon is delicious, bought two pounds and it is not enough. Strawberries were real and sweet. Prices are excellent. Highly highly recommend. We were greeted as soon as we entered the market with a smile and friendly employees. The kids even got a small snack! Yes, in a perfect world, every local farmer would also be organic and "blah, blah, blah," but if given a choice of buying something from a farmer 5-10 miles from my home, or having it trucked from 3,000 miles away, I'm going with the farmer nearby. There is no comparison between factory-farmed meat and the kind of meat offered by a farmer like Bisson's, butchered right on-site. Walk across the road from their market and you'll see the cows--grazing in the field and happy. This is the 86th year the Bisson family has been in business on Meadow Road in Topsham. That's a testament to their love of farming and the care they take to make sure their products are fresh. It also speaks to the long hours and careful choices they've made. When you buy your meat at Bisson's you are waited on by a family member. That counts for something in my book. Their pork chops are the best I've ever had. They also sell milk from their very own cows. I like their heavy cream for my coffee. They also carry local eggs (from a producer in Waldoboro). Fresh honey, too. I've started making Bisson's a weekly stop, first thing Saturday morning, picking up my meat for the week. There is a briskness and no-nonsense vibe to the market. Don't be put off by that. It's all about efficiency, because things can get busy by 9:00 a.m. on a Saturday. Oh, and don't be afraid to ask questions of Arthur, an honest to goodness butcher whose been doing this for 40 years or more. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, Bisson's carry chicken pot pies (made from Mémère's special recipe, filled not with chicken and vegetables, but rather with chicken and stuffing. We are able to get locally growth excellent products from Bisson's. Our last purchase was a rib roast that we aged for 35 days. The quality, the flavor the texture was unreal. An AWESOME place! Ok, I'm Japanese and needed some specially shaved chuck beef, pork, and sometimes beef tongue for Japanese dish that I cook. This place answers any of your request (well I think most of it at least) and do it right there at the shop. I recommend Delmonico steak there, it's sooo good you'll never be able to get steak anywhere else but here! And price was very reasonable for the quality. The only regret that I have is I never get to try that Blood Sausages I heard grandma makes once in a while. I no longer live Maine... So to all Japanese wives living in Maine, I highly recommend this place. Just go there and ask "Shaved Chuck" for Gyu-niku Usugiri like for Gyu-don, and "Shaved Pork" for Buta Bara. The quality of their products is first rate, the store is clean and well organized and the customer service staff knows its business very well. Being local, I'm able to avoid Saturday mornings which can be pretty hectic for them. I understand some of the comments about the service, but given the effort they put out and the consistent high quality of their products, they are a no-brainer go-to place for everything from bacon to their half-lamb package. Chickens are as huge as any you have seen and delicious roasted or smoked. Try the chicken pie for a serious cool weather dinner- delicious! Stock your freezer with beef, pork. lamb, chicken, sausages or whatever. It's all top quality! read more

One of the most unique markets i have ever been to. Quality meat and butter, sausage, chicken, smoked meats. And the best service. The clerk said, "my mom will check you out". The cashier area is in the center of the store, with meat cases around the outside of the store. You can ask for the helpers to show you the piece of steak, roast or sausage. I go to Bisson's here and there as I don't live close (hoping to change that by buying a house in the area). Sometimes there is some gruffness in the attitude, but I wouldn't give them less than five stars (I guess it's cause I get why lol, can be a mad house and summer ugh tourists much). Meat is excellent quality and what you get is huge awesome cuts of beef, excellent chicken, and fabulous pork. I've read the other comments and kinda chuckle at the 'brusque' term. The people at Bisson's are knowledgable, efficient and friendly. They may not be warm and fuzzy, I know very few people who do customer service for a living that you can call warm and fuzzy. The quality of their meat is outstanding, it's always fresh, never 'pink slimed' or injected with water as it is in the large supermarkets. I love this place, and their meats. Local meat! It was a little nerve racking at first cause it's nothing I've ever seen before. The middle is where you pay and all around are closed glass fronted cases. Basically you grab a number, tell the person what you want and they grab it from the front and package it up for you. I'm used to butchers being behind, but they are right there hanging out in the middle. Raw milk, eggs, beef butchered on site. The cuts of meat were gorgeous!! The breakfast sausage is delicious, the bacon is so so good and doesn't shrink up like grocery store bacon. We found some fresh veal, Delmonico steaks, smoked kielbasa, beef jerky that looks like thick slice of beef with a sauce, raw milk. The cows are right out back and butchered on the site. They offer chicken, beef, pork, eggs, sausage, a myriad of frozen items, raw milk, seasonings and even cold cuts they make. For what you get the price is right! read more

I drove from Derry, NH. Their meat is WONDERFUL! Their milk puts the mmMMMMmmm in mmmmMMMMMmmmmooooooo! they knew where their food came from. The patrons were wicked personable! The young lady that was to help me...i felt like i was putting her out .. she did not inform me on specials...i overheard a lady who was getting help from another employee about special on frozen....and i was like oh? i can get this steak for less? she was distant and mumbled yes. i just got a dud is all for "help" everyone else was smiling and energetic. the older man in the pic was SUPER helpful and answered questions. a young man there when i was browsing the blueberries saw and said "picked fresh today!" everyone but the one taking care of me (lol) was super sweet and on top of things. i just got the peg in the round hole it seemed like...or on a bad day. the place was bustling big time! they have no regular cream for ur coffee, but do have a heavy cream. their food was so good, their butter delish! prices were awesome, the super nice man was an owner! he let me walk around and take pics :) giving a full 5 stars in spite of the lackluster person that "helped" me...was like pulling teeth! that is how good they are! seriously! read more

I have known the Bisson family for generations. They are close friends who always make me feel like part of the family. They are top notch butchers who know what quality is. Come for the excellent quality of beef, pork, and chicken, but DO NOT expect great customer service. The older women are fine, but the daughters are rude. They really don't go out of their way for you and if you (dare) ask for anything other than is what in the case, be prepared for some serious eye-rolling and sighs. Really? I guess it is a family business and they can do what they want, but if employees behaved that badly in any other business they would be fired. That said, I do frequent Bissons because their meats are of excellent quality. I just put up with the bad attitudes. I would give this 5 stars, but the rude behavior takes it down a couple of notches. read more

We brought a yearling pig in for butchering that we had raised in the back yard. The result was terrible! We went there because of the good reviews. The cuts of the meat were up recognizable and full of fat. The shoulders also had a lot of fat but tasted better. Than the roasts. We and our two son in laws and father in law thought the bacon was bad. My father in law said the smoking was not enough and the taste was quite unpleasant. The pork chops were very fatty and strangely shaped. The hams were good. The sausage was bland. Al in all it seems to us like they had a new butcher who had no idea what he was doing and they did not check or oversee his work. read more

I've been told these folk can be brusque, but I'd agree with others who've said that they're simply efficient and don't necessarily suffer fools gladly (me). That makes them fairly typical Mainers, I think--maybe folk from away think that's brusque, too. I'd rate the quality of the products at 5 stars, 6 if I could, with all the superlatives of other reviews. Their milk holds for a week beyond the use-date on the bottle, maybe in part because I transfer it to glass bottles when I get it home, but, still . . . it tells you how fresh it is that it lasts this long. As for service . . . they sell marrow bones for dogs, and I have a little one, and when I've asked for 5 lbs. of small marrow bones, they've gone out of their way to make them manageably small--I call ahead, so they're not trying to find little bones at the last minute. When I've picked them up, we've had a pleasant conversation about our dogs. Since I live nearby, I don't go on Sat. mornings--maybe that helps, too. read more
