But...we were just driving through and looking for a place for a meal....we saw the outside thought it was cute, we looked up reviews and decided to try it! Our experience was a 11/10! We were treated so well from the moment we stepped in....from the owner Wayne, to our server John. Our wine was good, I had the grilled chicken sandwich and my husband had the fish and chips and we were both pleased with our choice! We dined outside on the patio and the ambiance was fabulous. Easy parking, menu with variety. Had the chicken fried chicken which was yummy and large. Their cream gravy a little different than biscuits and gravy kind...so good. We were visiting Gardens AGlow in Booth Bay. We saw Montsweag on the way into Booth Bay and noticed that it was packed at lunchtime. After visiting the gardens, we weren't sure we wanted to drive 30 minutes the other way for dinner, but we did and we were very happy about it! Everything was outstanding from the drinks and appetizers to dinner and dessert. They say their clam chowder is award-winning. Two in our party had the clam chowder and agreed that it was the best chowder they've ever had. These two order chowder wherever they go. They also had the calamari which they said was excellent as well. The scallops appetizer was GF and was unbelievable. I have a gluten allergy so I had the haddock without breadcrumbs. It was very, very good. I did not get sick, so they get five stars for that. The service was excellent. The vibe was relaxed and friendly. We enjoyed our visit immensely. read more

We were in Boothbay for Gardens Aglow and honestly weren't sure if we wanted to make the 30-minute drive out to Montsweag at first especially after a long day. But every restaurant in Boothbay had over an hour wait, and I can confidently say I am SO glad we couldn't get a reservation anywhere else because it led us here. We got a reservation right away, were seated early, and everything from start to finish was incredible. The food tasted so fresh and flavorful, the drinks were amazing, and the atmosphere was perfect . Cozy but still lively with live music. Truly one of those places where nothing misses. I'm from out of state and already planning to come back next year just to eat here again. I honestly can't say enough good things about Montsweag. So worth the drive and then some! read more

We went dinner tonight based on a visit I made a couple months ago during a Saturday lunch time. My previous visit was amazing-great service and delicious food. Tonight was a different story. Our server was very distracted. She never introduced herself, didn't offer the specials, and didn't extend any effort to make our visit pleasant or welcoming. I will say that the restaurant was busy and there were only two or three servers. My take on potential staffing shortages is -- management shouldn't fill every table of there won't be adequate service. The onion rings/straws were super spicy and my flatbread & the fish were over cooked (that wasn't the case with any of those plates the last time I was there) Two good things-they have a nice offering of Maine brews. And they don't fill their water glasses with ice. The restaurant is handicapped accessible-no stairs. It is clean, too. read more

We dropped in at 5 on our way to Gardens Aglow not thinking we needed reservations, but they were full. We got two seats at the bar and had amazing food and drinks. Crock of onion soup is made with Beal broth and was super delicious. My wife had the Waldorf salad and she loved it - she said the dressing needed something, probably salt. I had the fried chicken dinner with garlic mashed and roasted carrots. They fry a whole breast from a small chicken, delish!, black pepper gravy on the side and the mashed potatoes were scrumptious. Bartender greeted us when we arrived and couldn't have been more welcoming. Patio, Dining room and bar seats open on this Sunday afternoon. Clean and nice looking. Oodles of options on the menu ... and quite tasty! That is the French Onion Soup was outstanding. The blueberry prosciutto flatbread - while tasty - missed the mark on covering the dough. And my desire for chicken tenders - well, should've passed entirely!! Overcooked and tough. Sadly, the bill for lunch was high & not representative of "good eats". Asking for a takeaway soda was met with disdain and handed a kiddie cup! I would absolutely give a NEGATIVE star count- for the server, Lindsey and her incredibly rude and dismissive attitude - she either needs to find a new line of work or have a remedial course on how-to be gracious and respectful and helpful to her customers. Have driven past the Montsweagmany times and never stopped. For a brief time it was closed and wondered if it would reopen. Thankfully they did. Took the time and made sure to stop this time while in the area. Parking was easy and area in front well lit. Entered and sat immediately at the bar. Atmosphere was exposed beams and broad panel wood flooring in main dining room while in the bar area exposed concrete. I notice all chairs low and high had tennis balls on their legs! Interesting touch. Live music was playing and the folks were all enjoying. Menu has a decent selection of items, husband had their burger and I had their fish tacos. I was hesitant at first because of the spice listed but was assured by the bartender that it was not over whelming. Burger was fresh and tasty and the tacos were delicious. The perfect amount of heat, not burning down to my stomach. Over all it was a nice experience and when we are back this way Will stop again. read more

We were on our way from Portland to Belfast and decided to stop for lunch. We were seated on the back patio which was surrounded with flowers and was quite charming. Our server, Nicole was wonderful. She was busy waiting tables both inside and on the patio and she did her best to make sure we were taken care of. We had the House Focaccia with the whipped Ricotta and Pesto, a half dozen local oysters and the Classic Fish & Chips. Everything was wonderful but I have to say the Fish & Chips was one of the best I have had and I order Fish & Chips quite often since I am pescatarian. The French fries were also really, really good. They were fresh cut and cooked perfectly. It is worth stopping if you are in the area. Just be patient because like restaurants all over, they are dealing with staffing issues. A very nice homey kind of place, reasonably quiet in the dinning area off the bar. The only hamburger available is 8 ounces, the last thing I need. Why not offer 4 or 6 ounces. It was very good although the roll was over done. My wife ordered a chicken piccata and ended up with chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, certainly not chicken piccata. I went to Montsweag to meet a friend that lives in the mid coast area for lunch. Although Montsweag is a well known landmark, I had never been and was looking forward to checking it out. It was surprisingly busy for lunchtime on a weekday afternoon in December. Lots of people day drinking at the bar, and lots seated, having lunch. As other reviews said, it was quite noisy, which wasn't a problem for us. The rustic barn decor seemed to match the historic building. The service was decent, we each had a drink, salad, and split a dessert. Honestly, everything was okay, this just isn't my kind of place. The description on Yelp says "lots of vegetarian options" which simply is not true. I think out of the whole menu I had two salads to choose from because even most of the salads had meat. The salad was okay, although I wasn't crazy about the canned mandarin oranges on top. Montsweag seems like kind of a traditional meat and potatoes place that might appeal to an older crowd who would enjoy going out for pot roast. As I recall, on the day we were there one of the specials was rabbit. The service was prompt and polite, the food was okay, Montsweag is just not my kind of place. read more

First off the food was incredible!! We had the pleasure of having Maddy as our waitress!! From the second she got to our table she was so attentive, helpful, and knowledgeable about the menu. She was gracious enough to help me decide on a main course and drink since I'm very indecisive!! She recommended the baked haddock and the frozen cosmo!! Maddy couldn't have picked better based on my preferences; the haddock was one of the best dishes I've had , you could tell how fresh the fish was and how they made sure to enhance it with the right amount of breadcrumbs and butter!!! The frozen cosmo was to die for and something I've never had anywhere else!! If it wasn't for the amazing service that Maddy gave us I truly don't think my experience would be this memorable! Unfortunately had an underwhelming experience, it was my first time here and I will not be trying it again. The food was pretty good, except the fried haddock was dry and very salty. The service on the other hand was pretty bad. There was an issue with our reservation for the igloo, they tried to brush us off and didn't seem like they wanted to resolved the issue. Even though they had the incorrect number in their system when they tried to rebook our reservation, seems like there are some scheduling issues amongst staff. I was in the area because we were trying to go to Red's, however, that was a busy. So we attempted to go to another restaurant and again no luck but since we were in their parking lot looking for a place to go someone came out and gave us the name and directions to this place!!!! OMG first of all if another restaurant is going to recommend you to people then you have to be doing something right and they are! This has to be a place that only the locals know is there because we were treated so special it was terrific. If they were not three hours away I'd be there again in a heartbeat! I had my first lobster roll and it was fantastic and their fries are delicious because as our waitress Lindsay said 'they are a love child of a chip and a French fry.' My husband made reservations in the dining room for us, our 2 children, and my daughter in law for Mothers day dinner. We arrive and are told it will be a wait of a few minutes. Twenty minutes later we are seated at a table next to the bar, not in the room. The waitress then approaches our table and let's us know it will be 1 1/2 to 2hrs atleast before we will receive our food orders. We ended up leaving and making different arrangements. I was truly disappointed in them. I had been there a year ago without issues and liked the food. My husband says he will never go back. It would have been nice if they hadn't overbooked. Also, having done that at least let us know when we arrive about the nearly 2hr wait. Very unprofessional. read more

Well, it's changed a lot since I worked there as a hostess back in the late 80s, but WOW!! The food is absolutely amazing! We have been there twice now and the staff is so friendly, the atmosphere is great and the set up inside, different from years ago, but I love it! They have a full bar and I believe they have live music upstairs from time to time, and they have outside seating too. Now, we still haven't had dessert, but maybe someday :)!! The night we were there, they did have someone singing in the bar area, very cool. If in the Woolwich area, stop by, you'll be glad you did. read more

I had lunch recently at Monstweag at the recommendation of a long-time friend and was not disappointed. Since my dog was with me, we opted for the little gem of a courtyard behind the restaurant; they have tables with umbrellas and it's perfect for a nice day. Even being outside, the service was good with the waitress regularly making the rounds to check on us. They have a nice selection of beers, wines, and ciders; with the warm day I opted for a Citizen cider and it hit the spot. For food I went with the steak tips which were cooked to order and delicious; the accompanying mashed potatoes were great as well. Portions were generous enough that I enjoyed the last of it for dinner that night. Definitely recommend Montsweag if you want a really good meal in the mid-coast area. read more

We have returned to "The Montsweag" a number of times since then (but after the chef then on board had left and a new team took over the kitchen). We have been impressed each time with the food, service and overall experience at this restaurant, which has become one of our "go to" favorites of late. Excited to find a place that does brunch so made reservations for today. First off it is loud inside which is probably amplified by the low ceilings and the two large groups seated near us along with two toddlers being toddlers. A very pleasant server took our orders and the food was delivered relatively quickly. Eggs Benedict - eggs perfectly done, hollandaise sauce was very bland. It lack brightness and could use some fresh lemon juice and a little cayenne to perk it up. The potatoes were cold and lacked seasoning. On a return visit I still enjoyed this restaurant, although the food was less memorable. With a bustling and friendly vibe, the pleasant staff is very attentive and it feels like a happy place. My order of Baked Haddock was tasty but smothered under way too much bread topping, most of which I had to scrape off. My husband's Pasta Carbanero (or something like that) was reportedly great, but too much bacon I thought, although he loved it. Our starter of Mussels was just okay, the mussels were small and the broth was watery and bland. But the real disappointment was the fact that when he made the reservation my husband had said it was our 39th wedding anniversary and asked if they could bring us each a surprise glass of champagne as dessert. It never appeared. That bummed him out. Came in with the family tonight, mix of locals and visitors. We had a reservation for 7:15 and waited 35 minutes to be seated. The hostess stand was vacant for quite a while. Turns out she was bussing and setting tables in addition to doing her hostess duties. A 5 top by the bar was empty the entire time we were waiting and was still empty when we left. Our family was crammed around a small 4 top, making it difficult for apps and general comfort. Delia, our server, who we have had before was a delight and remembered us.
