We had quite the day of travel nightmares and walking into Bistro 79 was such a relief largely because of Shaun. From the moment he greeted us with the most gracious smile and genuine kindness everything started to feel better. Our order was very specific and a bit complicated yet Shaun remembered every single detail perfectly. Honestly better than we could have ourselves. (We were raving about the food in the hotel room as well. Couldn't have asked for a better meal!) That level of attentiveness is rare and so appreciated. Beyond that he took the time to engage with us in conversation and made us feel truly cared for. Knowing he has been there for over 25 years speaks volumes and it is clear why. We checked in late at the hotel and were hoping that the restaurant would be a good American dining experience, but we were really disappointed. First, the prices were at least a little insane. We'd seen some menus online, but the menu we had was much more expensive. $46 for Steak Frites, over $20 for sandwiches. But we were hungry from traveling and decided to roll the dice. It should have been a sign that the only people eating were at the bar. The bartender was the only server so we waited a long while. He was super nice, but had his hands full at the bar. I know it's a convention center kitchen behind everything, but should you even be able to charge $46 for a steak if you don't have dedicated table service? We ordered the Steak Frites and a chicken sandwich to save our budget. And the food, frankly, was pretty terrible. We ordered the steak medium, but it came out extra rare. The truffle fries (just regular fries with some seasoning on them) and the sweet potato fries were really undercooked and while someone had nicely charred the green beans, they had not bothered to cook them past being raw on the inside. Undercooked seems to have been the theme. I was very grateful that the bartender realized our disappointment and gave us a discount on the bill, but I could never recommend this place to anyone. read more

Came here for something fast for lunch as I was staying at the hotel here. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak and that was a mistake. I'm not sure if they exactly know what a Philly cheesesteak is. The meat on here seemed to be large chunks of an old steak. Would not recommend. Stopped in for a midweek business dinner with friends and Shawn crushed it with the service - even working the bar at the same time! But not only was the service superb but the food was EXCELLENT! While our friends ordered the walleye and steak, my wife ordered the special of the day: a baked AND grilled chicken on a bed of rice with the tastiest curry we've ever had. Tucked toward the back of the recently renamed Hilton, Bistro 79 is a spacious little hotel bar/restaurant. The waitstaff is fairly attentive albeit maybe a little slow and a bit too "humorous" for its own good. However at the end of the day it's mostly about the food and this is where things fell short of an already mediocre expectation. The steak frites was extremely low quality, and while I didn't expect it to knock my socks off, I did expect it to maybe exceed an Applebee's steak... but no, it didn't even at nearly 2x the price. Next up was the shrimp cargot. A neat little concept, but essentially just shaken Parmesan cheese doused over some shrimp. Hopefully you LOVE Parmesan... Lastly, the blackened walleye was again quite the letdown. Lackluster flavor, overly fishy, maybe even a tad undercooked. My work meetings are done for the week and it's time to go home! But first... lunch. So on the way to the airport I did some Yelp'ing and found this place to be highly rated. Cool, so here's how it went. Atmosphere/Appearance: Located deep inside the Marriott hotel near the Mall of America is this hidden gem usually reserved for those staying in the hotel. I'm a super Yelp'er so I'm not afraid to walk all up in a hotel to visit their restaurant even though I'm not staying there. Lol. This hotel has a private lot so you won't have any hassles parking your car. Once inside the main doors you walk straight until you see the entrance to the restaurant on the right. There really wasn't anything special about the decor and it was sort of your standard hotel restaurant. There is a section where you can sit and look out into the hallway if that's what you want to do. Service: Bambo was our server and he took excellent care of us. I have nothing to complain about whatsoever. Food: It was lunch so I wanted something a little lighter so I opted for the Asian Chicken Salad while adding an extra chicken breast. The salad consists of spicy grilled chicken, cucumber sticks, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, almonds, crispy wontons and served with mandarin dressing. It was absolutely fabulous. It was light, refreshing, delicious and full of flavor. I loved it and would totally get it again. Value: My salad ran me $18.00 and an extra $5.00 for the extra chicken. A $23.00 salad is pretty steep, but we're in a Marriott and you know how hotel food gets... In conclusion, I'm glad that I found this place to have a decent lunch before leaving the great state of Minnesota. I will be back! read more

The calamari was rubbery and overcooked: pass on that waste of $20.00. Prices in line with the high end hotel where this bistro is located. Ambiance is MN chic. Cool birch buffer at rear of restraunt really taps that outdoorsy feel. Also, note meal service ends and hour before closing due to prep time and staff availability. Great for our party as I was not feeling the $47.00 pork chops. The hot wings were more my speed $17.99. Steak house fries rounded out the meal nicely, in under 45 minutes. read more

I don't usually eat at Hotel Restaurants. Only in certain circumstances where I arrive late at night and I'm too tired to go out or way too hangry to order delivery. So I came, I ordered to go and I got my food. The ahi tuna was pretty good. I couldn't eat meat that night since it was the Lenten season, but the salad definitely hit the spot. The balsamic dressing was really bity as well, which I like btw. Service was pretty good. We were well taken care of. But just a friendly reminder before I sign off. I'm going to be upfront and honest about my review. I came here because I am at a hotel in the area and not the Marriott where this place is at. It's the only bar that's open in walking distance on a Sunday night. They didn't have prices listed but you need to be aware this place is overpriced.. By overpriced they're charging South Beach prices. I paid $9.50 for 1 bottle of angry orchard. If I knew the prices I wouldn't of bought another one. I got a California burger too with a side of fries. My bill was $45 at least.... I had to tip the bartender too regardless out of respect. Seeing my bill shocked me and killed my buzz and sobered me up. It was not worth the money.... If you stay at the hotel this gets added to your room tab..... I should of spent $30 after tip easily. This restaurant is inside the Marriott Hotel (near the airport)....I missed my flight so Southwest paid for me to stay here. The people at this restaurant made me feel so welcome and so well taken care of! I was shocked at how quality their menu is---and wine selection! What a high end restaurant for being inside a hotel---I was super impressed. Mary waited on me twice and went out of her way to bring me a huge spread of veggies with my hummus plate (I told her I had been eating "nothing but cheese and meat for four days".... I'll be carrying back this spirit of kindness and genuine hospitality with me back to my own salon, where I also serve people all day. I needed a solid meal after a long day of traveling. There were several dishes that appealed to me on the menu, but I settled on the chicken picatta with a Caesar salad for dinner. It came with warm rolls, and the server offered extra sauce with the entree which was nice. Everything was delicious and fresh. Not your typical hotel fare. The atmosphere is fine dining, and the servers were knowledgeable about the menu and wine list in addition to being very friendly and attentive. During a recent business trip to Minneapolis I spent 2 evenings at Minneapolis Airport Marriott. Bistro 79 in the hotel is an very good option for dinner and excellent conversation with Shaun the bartender - quick with a pour and a good story. The walleye is fantastic served with mashed potatoes, asparagus, & a lemon butter cream sauce. 2nd night there I did not want to venture out and ate there again. Had the salmon. It was good but not excellent. Definitely stick with the walleye. Very nice bar in a hotel in desperate need of renovation (which is in process). This place is incredibly overpriced for what it is. A basic club or Ruben sandwich is $17-20. Just about everything on the menu, no matter how plain or underwhelming it is, is marked way up. Domestic beers are $5 and a wine pour is $13. None of this would have mattered if we were provided with acceptable food. This Marriott is not the fanciest one I have ever stayed in, but this Marriott restaurant has the best service and staff. The front desk staff is nice too, but Bistro's staff is outstanding. Everyone is very attentive and friendly. Without me asking, my waitress gave me a coffee to go cup. They chat with guests to make sure they enjoy their stay. My finished plates were taken away immediately. You don't have to look for them for service. They take care of everything before you ask. What an amazing management at this operation. My husband, son and I offered to be bumped from our Delta flight out of Minneapolis to Boston. They put us up at The Airport Marriott. Being that it was late (10:00) we decided to eat at the hotel restaurant Bistro 79 instead of searching out a restaurant (plus we had vouchers). It turned out to be a great choice. Our waiter Matthew was very courteous and attentive. I did have to ask him about the specials, but otherwise a 10 out of 10. I had one special, the duck, which was delicious. My husband had the strip steak which he said was fabulous. Prices are normal for hotel restaurants teens to $30, but portions were very generous including both a vegetable and a starch. This was the Marriott hotel restaurant. They had a delicious Bang Bang Shrimp followed by a Lemon Sorbet that hit the spot after normal travails of flying. Ate at the bar and the friendly bartender wanted to talk hockey after seeing my Penguins hoodie. I empathize with people trapped in cities without credible sports teams, I grew up in Cleveland after all. :). He tried to convince me that the Vikings were a credible football team, but of course not in this decade I reminded him. Wonderful Marriott property restaurant. The food is always fresh and tasty. Highly recommend the burger - my favorite burgers come from Marriotts so I may be a little biased. They have a pretty good wine selection for an airport hotel bar/restaurant. Of course the prices are a tad higher being what it is, but I think it's worth it compared to what you could get in the area AND the SERVICE IS EXCEPTIONAL. Nice atmosphere - relaxing. I got the Shrimp bowl and it was literally 6 pieces of shrimp, about 2 (YES, T-W-O) tablespoons of rice, and some stir fry bell peppers. $25 after tax. TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS not including tip. I went in at 7 PM. The service was garbage. I probably waited 15 minutes before someone came to wait me because it's open seating. Then another 30 minutes for the food. They weren't even crowded. Waiter spoke in dude-bro manner "how's your food man". Two other waiters were talking near me and kept swearing in dude-bro language "ahahah yea f*** that bro". Classy. Do not go here.
