We had such a wonderful dinner last evening for our daughter's birthday. Everything was exceptional. It reminded me of the movie, "The One Hundred Foot Journey" with Helen Mirren, except that instead of French food with an Indian twist, the twist is Moroccan and North African. I seldom say "Wow" about a dish, but we shared them around and I honestly said it about each and every one. That is a rare treat. Their wine list is also unusual - a varied selection including many wines and even varietals that we hadn't tried. The champagne was tasty, and their suggestions for a red and a white that would go with all our dishes were spot-on. In fact, I ordered online three bottles of the Sicilian red last night, and I would have ordered the German white except that I couldn't find the exact same one. The outside of the building is not much to look at, but the décor inside is tasteful, and we loved the big photographs by Andy Katz. They mentioned that they're about to redecorate, so we'll be eager to see what they do. Last but not least, the service was hospitable, personable, professional, and knowledgeable. We really enjoyed meeting the co-owner, Megan, and look forward to many more visits. read more

Great little place for excellent food. I had the bass and it was delicious; best part were the different flavors you can taste within the dish. The portions were perfect and the wait staff were very accommodating and knew their foods. Only compaint is that it gets really noisy when the restaurant is busy. But other than that it is a superb restaurant simply for its food, staff, and drink. read more

Had dinner Saturday night and it was fantastic. Small place in a strip mall but it's really nice inside. It's full but it doesn't fill like people are on top of you. The service is super professional, but the food is what is so special, fresh, cooked to perfection. I had the escargot and the duck breast and it was outstanding. Bistro Barbes has long been our favorite restaurant in Denver. It's true hidden gem and every meal has been perfect. (And I'm a very demanding eater.) I love the modern French-North African flavors. I had not realized until the other day that they had developed such as a great (and, I would add, affordably priced) takeout menu during Covid. My husband and I ordered quite a lot last night to go--chicken tagine, a Basque chicken dish, couscous, flatbread, hummus, salad, and a chocolate torte. Everything was fabulous. We'll be fighting over the small bits of leftovers for lunch today. Definitely plan to order from them regularly now, as early as on Saturday. There are several other enticing options on the take out menu-will be trying them, and then surely will return to the dishes we greatly enjoyed last night. Will be suggesting to neighbors who also may not have heard about the great new menu options that they should given the Covid takeout menu a try. read more

This place has such a good feel. They are doing a lot in a small space. Everything we ordered was delish. They accommodated us without a reservation and made something not on the menu for our young son. Not a lot of veggie options if you don't eat fish- which was so good. Desserts did not sound appealing so we passed on them and the price was a little high but we had a such a great overall experience and will definitely be back. read more

This place is a bit challenging to review. Namely, because the food was quite good, beautifully plated, unique and rich French-inspired dishes, with great service to boot. But, the prices are astronomical for the amount of food you get. I came with a friend for a casual weeknight dinner (OK, we thought it was a neighborhood bistro, not a fancy French restaurant) and the bill was nearly $100 for two people with 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine, entrees and dessert. No appetizers, no salads. It's located on a somewhat "transitional" corner in north Park Hill. I think this area can support a mid-priced and innovative neighborhood restaurant, but Bistro Barbes crosses the threshold from "charming" to "chi-chi." It feels out of place in the neighborhood setting, surrounded by some poverty and struggle. Satchel's wasn't cheap either, but it was lively and unpretentious and seemed a better fit for this space. Love having a new option in the hood. Space is airy and bright. Tables are super cosy, not the place for private conversation . We ordered the 3 apps and a salad and a bottle of the Cava. Presentation was lovely but all 4 dishes missed out in seasoning!!! Green tomato gazpacho had absolutely no salt or acid to elevate the green tomato which is usually bland to begin with. Manchego grilled cheese was a brilliant spin on traditional crouton garnish. Spring onion tortellini had lovely delicate onion flavor but pasta was heavy and chewy (roll thinner next time) and the sublime rich sauce while buttery and decadent was also missing salt/lemon to add that final dimension. Escargot presentation was gorgeous. Loved the idea of the phyllo pie. Escargot had good earthy flavor but again, little to no seasoning in the filling. Asparagus salad was my favorite, tender ribbons gently tossed with other Spring yummies over labneh and a mild blue cheese cream on top. Tasted like Spring. We skipped dessert I walk to Eis for gelato. I love that the chef is pairing beautiful seasonal flavors and ingredients with a light touch but my only suggestion is more tasting before the dishes go out. Wonderful neighborhood date night spot- almost reminds me of the quaint hole-in-the-wall restaurants of NYC. Though small and tucked away in a seemingly random part of Park Hill, the atmosphere is great, the staff very sweet, and food delicious. Food is delicious and I was super excited to show off my new neighborhood to some Wash Park friends I don't get to see enough. Made my open table reservation for 4 but hubby had to work late. It took longer than I like to get any attention once I was at the table, then a while to get served our adult beverages once my friends arrived. The food was beautiful and delicious, but I think they need more service help. Our apps came out fairly fast, as did the salads, but then a rather long break before the entree. We also ordered dessert, and my friends had decaf and espresso. It was at this point that I was really embarrassed because we were nudged to leave because our check had been sitting on the table for around 5 minutes and someone was waiting for our table at the bar. We hadn't been malingering, just didn't notice the check. For the price of the food, and all 3 of us ordered the full 4 courses, I would expect to have the real estate of their table for a little longer. . . read more

One of our top meals! Our waitress Rio was spectacular. We had the escargot to share then the duck and scallops for the entrees, Rio recommended the perfect wine to pair. We finished with a cheese plate for dessert that the kitchen happily accommodated for a food allergy to make it work. Last night we went to Bistro Barbes to celebrate our wedding anniversary - an excellent choice! The four of us were welcomed in a way that told us we made the right decision. We began with a celebratory toast of champagne and an amazing bread from a local bakery. We then moved on to a Sauvignon blanc that was the perfect match to our first courses. My husband and I shared the mussels with linguica sausage. Oh so good. Our daughter and son-in-law shared two starters: the Spring Tagine and the escargots. Very, very delicious. For entrees, I had the beef cheeks (to die for) and my husband had the quail (not a hit). Our dinner partners were enthusiastic about their trout and grilled octopus. For dessert, we all shared the dark chocolate torte made with peanut butter, salted caramel and peanut meringue crisp. OMG. This was phenomenal as was the Blanc Mange with rhubarb. Wine list has some pricey offerings; we were glad to see wine by the glass option. Don't be put off by the location or the exterior. This place is a find. And do make reservations - it's a small restaurant. read more

Close your eyes and you might think you're in Paris. The food is amazing. There were six of us so we tried everything. Fabulous. We asked the chef how he learned to cook like this. The chef is Cordon Bleu trained and it shows. Try the desserts; they are a MUST. He prepares them himself. read more

We hit this place on an admittedly off night. We went on a Thursday. It had snowed about 3 inches on Wednesday. We sat at the bar. Our server told us they were out of beer and about half their wines, because no workers had been able to make it in to receive their deliveries for the week because of the "storm." What rubbish. Similar to other comments I feel the menu is quite small. The food did taste really good though. But what bothered me this time though was the service. The staff was polite but they seemed to ignore us ( or our main server ) and the glass of wine I ordered seemed to be a very small pour. When I asked about it the server said it was 150 ml but it seemed much smaller then what other people we're getting. It is just one of those things that leaves you with a disappointed feeling from a place that is trying to be a little more upscale. The escargot and octopus appetizers were excellent but I feel the entree portions (duck and beef) were much too small for the price, and the dessert's were underwhelimg. My husband and I just visited the bistro for the first time, and were so impressed by the creative and delicious food, the super friendly staff, and fresh ambience of the restaurant. We are both vegan, so the chef accommodated us with all the wonderful accompaniments to the fish/meat entrees, just larger portions, and we really loved the beet salad and artichoke vichyssoise. I went to this restaurant for a wine dinner and did not have any expectations. Upon leaving, I was thoroughly impressed! The ambience was quaint and lovely, the service staff was completely competent (which is a rarity in Denver right now), and the food was perfectly prepared. What I respected was that the dishes had such nice balance, with sometimes surprising ingredient combinations, without being "trendy" in their choices and forcing flavors/textures that just don't work together. What's more, the sauces were impeccable. A good sauce seems to be more illusive in our dining experiences than I care for but this was not the case here. I was really so pleased by my experience and would recommend it to anyone who likes classic & classy dining. read more

Food and service excellent. Everything we had was great: crispy quail appetizer, beet salad, braised short ribs, melt in your mouth scallops, chocolate bread pudding, house sorbet and fruit. This place is a find. Quiet and comfortable in a cozy bistro atmosphere. The location will throw you but don't let it deter you from making the trip. Another FANTASTIC evening at this wonderful neighborhood place. Though many non-neighborhood folks seem to flock here. This was my third dining experience in the past 2 months as I've been staying w/a great friend who literally lives around the corner to BB. Megan, Rio, Mitch and the entire crew are great at multi-tasking and making you feel welcomed, and satiated. The lobster bisque currently on menu is incredible for a starter. Not a traditional bisque but more like a lobster cream soup w/lobster-filled tortellini, fried sage and an unexpected (but highly welcomed) fennel-kumquat slaw. Following this was an impeccable roasted beet salad w/sunflower nage and chickpea (ceci) crackers. All the while, enjoying a great Pinot noir from their limited, but good, wine list. Moving to the main, was a perfectly seared diver scallop (actually 3) which was accompanied by turmeric lentils, braised fennel, carrots & blood oranges and a caviar creme fraiche. Stunning. Wasn't going to stop there so I dove into dessert. I had previously enjoyed a couple of the items (green apple panne cotta, cappuccino pot au creme) so I went for the special Camembert, julienned apples and red wine reduction. Again, so tasty. I highly recommend you try this little jewel. It's in a non-descript building, but utterly worth finding. read more
