I live here and read over some of the reviews to make sure I wasn't acting like a sensitive tourist. This WAS NOT an isolated incident. The food here is decent, some dishes definitely much better than others. Last time I came here was an absolute disaster, they ended up comping our entire food bill because It took 2 hrs to get our dinner out.... I'm pretty sure the waiter forgot to put our order in so def nothing against the kitchen. Tonight however, karissa was our server (name was on the check, would have no clue otherwise), she forgot our water, one appetizer, a beer and bread that we had asked for twice. Honestly she seemed drunk or high and definitely eager to get off her shift. It's sad because this is one of the only semi decent places to eat in central maui and the service is diner quality at best. I've worked in service industry for the entire 10 years that I've lived here and yelp reviews generally mean nothing, we used to laugh at the exaggerations people would post but sincerely if anyone with any managerial say reads this, please retrain your staff. You live in paradise and generally serve people stoked to be here, check yourself for your 6 hr shift. It's not that hard, honestly. Update: I appreciate the owner/ upper management responding to my review and having the servers back. Just for the record, we walked in at 8:10 and the restaurant was maybe a 1/3 full. It took atleast 5 min (no exaggeration) for someone to greet us and the hostess hastily told us everything that the kitchen was out of bc it was a Thursday's night. The entire atmosphere was was off. I encourage anyone reading this to visit this establishment and make a judgement of their own...Sub par as far as I'm concerned. We like to come here for the $5.00 happy hour specials. Mojitos, margaritas or wine in a half liter carafe--what a deal!! They get pretty busy during happy hour and the service is hit or miss. Our last visit was well past the happy hour special, and the restaurant was fairly empty. HOWEVER, our service was bleh. It took a little while for our server to take our order. We were there for tapas and drinks, and well... We got our drinks but not our tapas. The restaurant has recently removed some of its tables and added a lounging area. I love the ambiance, but the service leaves a lot to be desired. I think I'll stick to happy hour, at least the price of my drink offsets the disappointing service. read more

This place is everything you'd expect from a classy Italian restaurant. First, their Aperol Spritz is probably the best one I've ever had. They bring you really fresh bread. We shared caprese, and then got Spinach Ravioli and Bolognese with meatballs. Prefered the Bolognese with Meatballs. Also a large menu! Great restaurant! read more

They would get five stars, but get three stars because they do not have happy hour food specials just drink specials; and the service continues to be lacking. On this night, we sat right next to the bar, but couldn't get anyone to bring us drinks! HUH??? So - 1-star subtracted for no food discounts during happy hour. Their drink specials are great! $5 mojitos and margaritas - and they're delicious! Can't beat that in Maui! The food is good, but the fact you have to pay full price for it just doesn't seem right. They could at least have a pupu menu with smaller portions or something for a lower price. Then, another star subtracted for the service, or lack thereof. I've been here several times and the service always somehow fails. They do good when they start, but then to get continued assistance either to take your order, get refills on any type of beverage, check on your order because it's been a while, and get some kind of condiment you need because the food is lacking something, it takes forever to find someone who can and will help you. *SIGH* The servers themselves, when they are actually on top of it (if even for a short while) are good. The problem is finding those servers! In any case, a good way to go if you're looking for a place to drink mojitos and margaritas. A Diamond in the rough, my wife and I literally stumbled onto this place when a local recommended it. We were extremely skeptical when we drove by because the restaurant is difficult to find. Don't judge a book by its cover! If you craved ROCKIN food without the $1,000,000 view, Casanova's is your place. The caeser's salad was one of the best I have ever had. I ordered homemade fettuccine carbonara and I do not believe I have ever tasted better. Keep in mind, I'm Italian, I travel all over the world eating wonderful meals and my wife would tell you I'm painfully picky when it comes to Italian food. She ordered a seared Mahi Mahi dish with basmati rice. Fantastic. Michael, the bartender was our server and he was about as good as you can get. Didn't know where to eat lunch in Kahului, so we asked a Maui resident and she referred us to Bistro Casanova. Looking at the building I wasn't expecting much, but when we walked through the doors I was pleasantly surprised. It was elegant, but not stuffy. I had Pollo (chicken breast, breaded & fried, served with frites and mixed greens tossed with tomatoes and feta cheese). The chicken was nice and crisy with just enough sauce & cheese so it was tasty, but not mushy. The mixed greens was tossed in a light dressing which I enjoyed and the frites had fresh rosemary and was also yummy. This generous portion was defintely worth the $14 price tag. Very reasonable. My friend ordered the fettuccine with spicy tomato sauce, italian sausage and dry ricotta. She was worried about it being too spicy, but the server assured her that it wasn't too spicy. As it turned out my friend said that it wasn't spicy and actually didn't have too much taste. Overall I enjoyed my experience. The atmosphere was nice, our service was good, my meal was good and reasonable. Like Rachel Ray says, "asks the locals" and I am glad we did. read more

Don't get me wrong the food is interesting and the restaurant is beautiful inside but as far as service goes we waited 10mins to get our bread that was supposedly being made fresh which I understand takes time but... the fact that when we got it it wasn't even hot... it was almost cold. As far as ordering "to-go" I called twice till they finally answered the phone and i know it might be busy at times but the fact that I could NOT place an order to go because they were not accepting to-go orders at the time ??? I mean is there a certain time I can not place to-go orders? Or is it because you folks were busy? The next day I ended up calling again but at a later time so that they could not tell me that they were unable to take to-go orders. We were seated with just a hiccup delay as the hostess wasn't paying attention to the door and we didn't realize where to stand. Everyone's-looking-at-you sort of deal. Hostess: 3 stars. Our waitress was pleasant, she recommended a very nice Argentinian Malbec that went well with my Ravioli Al Tartuffo (4 stars), described as "pasta pillows, filled with spinach and ricotta, in a sage and truffle oil sauce"; and my compainion's Fettuccine Al Ossobuco, described as "shredded veal shank tossed with tagliatelle noodles in a rich tomato, vegetables and red wine sauce, topped with dry ricotta cheese." Wine recommendation: 5 stars. My dish was very nice, rich with truffle oil. The Fettuccine Al Ossobuco was not so nice (1.5 stars). Very dry without the rich tomato sauce as described and chincy on the shredded veal. My friend said they should have sent the dish back. Very unfortunate. We also had the Caprese salad prior that was your usual fair (3 stars). Our waitress asked if we'd like pepper on it and we replied "sure!" and she never returned. This place is a hidden gem on Maui. I think this is right up there with one of the best dinners I had while on the island. I am not sure why the ratings aren't higher, but it might have been the dishes that we ordered. The menu features a variety of food from different Mediterranean countries with their own unique flair and unexpected flavor combinations. Not always strictly Italian or Mediterranean, but delicious, so that is all that matters to me. The service was great as the waiters kept checking in on us and making sure we were enjoying everything. They were also great at making recommendations when deciding between different dishes. For starters, I would recommend the delicious bacon wrapped scallops with a mango puree. The paella is also a must have as it had a very healthy helping of seafood, great flavors and was very moist. It is definitely enough for two people to share. The best part of the meal? You can get a carafe of wine for $10. Such an awesome bargain. read more

It was my husband's 70th birthday. We have never been to this place but had eaten at the other one in Makawao. Since we live in Kula it is a lot easier to go to the one in Makawao. The food at that location sucks though, we heard that the one in Kahalui was much better. We had a reservation at 7pm. We had 5 people at our table. Our server did not come to greet us or check in on us until 7:30, no water, no drinks, nothings. The hostess or manager is the absolute worst there. Totally unprofessional and plain stupid. We waited another 20 minutes to get a drink order, mind you our waiter has yet to come over and take are order. At 7:50 he comes over a apologizes. He takes are order and we wait another 30 minutes to get our food. The food was cold, the service was atrocious. What is going on at that place? Super, super disappointed. We will never go there again and we will never send anyone there for business. read more

After reading some reviews (bad and good), we decided to try our luck. The decor was cool and intimate. We were seated in the back by the bathroom (where the people who weren't dressed up enough get seated). We didn't mind, we were just hungry. Server seemed frustrated and a little blunt. No warmth in his service but he was verbally polite. Another server had mentioned how they just finished a rush so maybe that's why. Food was good. Nothing to rave about. Would I return? maybe not. Sometimes a bit noisy but I love to sit on the little side patio and slide the omnipresent Red Jungle Fowl (aka chickens) some snacks when the waitress isn't looking. Nice stop for something not-fast-food when we're in town plus the wine pours are generous. If you have company coming (and don't we all...living on Maui gives you sudden relatives), park them at the Maui SeaSide (wonderful place...older but so clean, well run and centrally located...plus the beach is right there!!) across the street and tell them to trot over to the Bistro for a full bar and a fun time with the local chickens. read more

This establishment is a diamond in the rough. Most restaurants in Kahului/central area are quite bland and pretty run down as far as ambiance. However Bistro Casanova offers a little escape from the typical central Maui restaurant. The Tapas menu is always changing, with popular items always making an appearance. The drink specials are amazing, of course the mojitos are probably the most popular. Did I mention happy hour is a steal?! Natalie makes the best drinks I've ever had!! She always has a smile on and just makes our experience a little more special. My only reason for -1 star is because the other servers seem to be stuck in their routine and not very engaging. If only the servers could be as personable as Natalie, I'd probably give 5 stars. Great restaurant nonetheless less. Excellent location and menu for the local clientele who appreciate more than the standard local establishment. read more

we came here for my bestfriends birthday dinner and it was a beautiful atmosphere inside the resturaunt. our waiter guy gave us good suggestions to eat due to we never ate there before. just be careful when being asked if you would like a salad with your meal, it doesnt come with the meal you get charged extra ($10). we didnt know until we got our bill, it was just disappointing that our waiter didnt tell us that (im sorry, it wouldve been nice to know due to me being on a budget). the portion of the meals are not that big, pretty pricey, the desert was good. i would have to say the location is not that bad, plenty parking spaces. read more

We were in the area and we were hungry so I just yelped for a nearby place to eat. I was attracted by the word "Mediterranean" under category but was fooled after sitting down and looking at the menu. Sure, the food weren't bad but nothing special about it either, just an average restaurant with average food and average service, thus the 3 stars. We ordered the meatball fettuccini and Quaack Crepe. They came out 15 minutes later and said they were out of goat cheese for our crepe and we had to substitute for another cheese, sadness :( read more

Perhaps it was the food, the service, or maybe there was magic in the air that night, but my first trip to BC was glorious. My husband and I had dinner with his coworkers for a send off before moving to the mainland. We arrived for happy hour and took full advantage of their $5 mojitos. EXCELLENT. Their scallop appetizer and breads are also to die for. There's usually a purple taro sweet roll in each basket along with a generous serving of bread sticks and focaccia. For dinner I had the Kwak Salad, the best salad of my life. If you're a duck fan, shoot for the salad or their duck breast entree. Their pasta and seafood are all excellent as well. For something memorable, I'd choose a pasta dish with their squid ink noodles. Save room for dessert! All their crepes are actually blankets stolen from angels. read more

This is the place is ridiculously amazing. I go here often because the food is consistently delicious. I live in Haiku but I'll drive all the way to Kahului because I crave a lot of the food! The tapas menu is unbeatable. They change weekly and Im always delighted. My problem is deciding which ones to order because I want them all!! But my favorites are the frities, NY steak w peppercorn, and the clams and mussels. The pastas are soooo good (I've tried almost all of them) and the bouillabaisse is to die for. The steaks are also really good especially with the scalloped potatoes and the different sauses that come with it! The happy hour is great too. Carafe's of white and red wine and also mojitos and margaritas for $5! The food is good but was not happy with the automatic charges. Ordered take out and was charged an automatic tip of 18%. My order was like 5 take out plates and I had to tip around $25! I always give a $5-10 tip when I order take out but $25 is ridiculous. They need to keep in mind that sometimes people that order takeout, place the order for work and many companies will not allow you to tip for takeout. read more

Since Bistro Casanova opened and took over for Manana Garage, I've been there several times for lunch and dinner. Regretably, I've never been by for Happy Hour, because banner outside advertises $5 mojitos, mai tais and margaritas. For dinner, my bf and I have eaten both at the bar and in the seating area. Our favorite tables are outside the restaurant. Although they're located next to the Kaahumanu Highway and there really is no view to speak of except for a Chevron and motel across the street, there really is something special about eating good food while enjoying the cool Maui breeze on a pleasant Maui night. We've had a few of their pastas, which have all been good, but our favorite dish was their rib eye steak with a truffle butter sauce served with scalloped potatoes and vegetables. YUM!! It was pricy, over $30 for the plate, but it was definitely one of the best steaks I've ever eaten. Followed that up with a dessert crepe and I think it was called a coco loco which was a coconut mojito and it ended up being the best dinner we ever had in Kahului. The only reason they didn't get a 5-star rating is because we had a very poor experience when we picked up lunch from their. We called in a pretty big order for pick up and we were told everything would be ready in 20 minutes. We showed up to pick up our order 25 minutes later and were told that it would "just be a minute." We sat at the bar for 30 minutes, all the while being told that our order was "almost done" and would "be along in a minute." They didn't even bother to offer us sodas while we waited, and never apologized for making us wait. Luckily, we were getting food for our bosses, so we didn't get in trouble for taking too long at lunch. But that experience alone was enough to knock their rating down a star. read more

We visited on Valentines Day 2014. Needless to say, it was busy, but even without a reservation, we were seated within 5 minutes at a pleasant outdoor table. Food: We had cocktails, followed by a sampling of tapas dishes and a pasta dish each. Cocktails: Bridget had their cosmopolitan variant, which was good, but not exciting. I had the Hookipa Fire, a vodka cocktail with basil, sours, and a hint of chilli, which was novel, excellent, and something I ought to learn how to make at home. Tapas: I didn't keep good records of the tapas we ate, but here's what I recall: a wonton incorporating goat cheese, beet and potato gnocchi with a creamy sauce, and a bowl of Kula French Onion soup. I recall the wonton being interesting and good but not remarkable. The gnocchi were, in terms of texture, hands down the best gnocchi I've had, and in terms of flavor, right up there with the best. I'm not a huge gnocchi eater, so I may be easily impressed, but they've converted me. The soup was unlike most French Onion soup I've had in the past, with a different onion character to most and a more salty base that didn't particularly suit me. Mains: Bridget had pesto-tossed linguine with scallops and sun-dried tomatoes, while I had spinach & ricotta ravioli in a butter & truffle sauce. Of these, Bridget's was both the most interesting and the most flavorful, perhaps not surprising given the strength of those ingredients. Both were prepared and presented well, and quite enjoyable. I would have enjoyed the ravioli more had I not preceded it with tapas - heavy sauces with subtle flavors aren't the easiest to enjoy when you're already somewhat full. Service & Experience: Unfortunately, a nearby building's air conditioning unit was malfunctioning loudly, which disrupted the ambience at our table. Otherwise, it was lovely, with a gentle warm breeze and plant life around the table. Getting that noise fixed would greatly improve the experience. Music was present, but not loud. The service was a little slow, and we had to flag down a waiter on more than one occasion. This was presumably because of the date and because we were outside and thus away from the bulk of the tables. The wait staff were pleasant and talkative. read more

1 star only because I can't leave zero stars. I went here about a week or so with my family while we were on vacation. And the entire experience was horrible. The food was mediocre - it wasn't the worst food I've eaten but I've definitely had better food at much lower prices. Firstly, the paella I ordered and the pasta my brother ordered were plain and nothing special. Secondly, the medium prime rib my mom ordered was medium rare on the rare side and when we asked for it to be cooked some more it was medium well. Thirdly, the martini my brother ordered was made sloppily. But the quality of the food is not the reason I am leaving this bad review. The reason I am leaving this bad review is because our waiter horrible. When we came into the restaurant our waiter let us look at the menu and take our time - nothing wrong with that. However, it took him a very long time for him to even take our orders. We ordered a paella, pasta, medium prime rib, and a martini. As I said before, the steak was prepared too rare for my mom's liking and we asked for it to be sent back and cooked longer. However, when my mom tried to get our waiter's attention he practically ignored our existence and made his rounds to the other tables. We weren't able to return the steak to the cook until another server walked by about 5 minutes later. On top of the steak, my family had to flag our waiter down for about 10 minutes to get my brother's martini. And it wasn't as if the restaurant was packed or our waiter was pushed for time. Rather than making sure my brother got his drink, he was talking to another table about the Godfather and Al Pacino. In fact, we didn't even talk to our waiter about the drink initially - the server who returned the steak to us was the one to retake his order. While we were explaining the drink situation to her, our waiter came running to our table. At this time, he told us he completely forgot to put in my brother's drink order. While we were waiting for our drink, he put napkins below our waters (something he did for all the other tables before even putting their waters down) and lit the candle at the side of our table (something that was done before other tables even sat down). Additionally, while he was refilling my water he spilled water on to the table, didn't even try to clean up the spill, and left without coming back until we asked for the check. The way he treated us made us lose our appetite and made us leave before finishing our meals. The total came out to be about $93 and my mom ended up leaving a hundred dollar bill. When my brother questioned why she would tip him at all, she said "I was sick of seeing his face and I didn't want to wait for him to return the change." read more
