Imagine finding excellent German/Swiss cuisine on Maui? Brigit & Bernard's Garden Cafe is just that place. Tucked in a quiet industrial area of Kahului, it is an oasis of delectable treats. The outside lanai is so comfortable and covered from the elements. We have gone there for years, and have always been warmly greeted by the owners. Tonight was no exception when we joined some good friends. The sausage appetizer is superb with your choice of pork or veal bratwursts served with red cabbage and tasty mustard. The Schweinsfilet (Hunter's cutlet) with its flavorful mushroom sauce was delicious. I always get the Wienerschnitzel which is huge, pan fried to perfect crispness yet tender and juicy inside. I ordered extra mushroom sauce to enhance the flavor. For sides, we love the red cabbage, sauerkraut, au gratin potato and spaetzle. Their beer and wine selection goes so well with their dishes. I've had their tasty strudel for dessert in the past. We look forward to dining again for dinner or lunch. Ausgezeichnet! read more

This is a wonderful German / Swiss restaurant. It's very small in an unusual area. The food is simply outstanding. Reservations are required for dinner. Because of its size they only accept a party every 15 minutes. Everything is good. My favorite is Wiener Schnitzel. And of course the beer is great. read more

Big fan of Brigit & Bernard's. I'd been wanting to try their food for awhile since coming across their episode on Triple D (aka Diners, Drive Ins and Dives). My husband and I both happened to off on random Monday and decided to visit for lunch. Arrived shortly after opening and not too crowded. We got to sit outside on a nice day breezy day with lots of shade from the trees. I ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu with potatoes au gratin and veggies and the husband got the carbonara with chicken and bread. We washed everything down with an iced tea and a beer. The portion sizes were heberous and the food was fresh, warm and filling. The flavors were amazing and we savored each bite. Really had a leisurely meal. Didn't get a chance to make it back for Oktoberfest, but will happily dine here again to try their other dishes. read more

This place is awesome! Brigit is very sweet. All of the food is great. My suggestions you come here are to 1) not be in a rush, the service is on the slower side 2) get a draft beer because bottles are still served in a nice cold stein but only fill it halfway 3) I wish the sides were a little more. The gratin potatoes and the sauerkraut were pretty small portions but still yummy nonetheless. And you can't beat the lovely outdoor environment! I will certainly be back! read more

Such a great venue. The outdoor seating area is nice on a sunny day, but we were there on a rainy day, so we had to eat inside. The food was excellent and left me wanting to try other dishes. My daughter got a salad and really enjoyed it. Will definitely go back again for lunch. read more

Overpriced Octoberfest. We attended for Oktoberfest and were really looking forward to it, but unfortunately, it was a major letdown. The "all-you-can-eat" buffet was barely edible, and at $80 per person, you'd expect at least one drink to be included--but it wasn't. (For the price you could go to Mama's) Our server made us feel judged and barely checked in on us. Thankfully, another server from the front section stepped in to help, but the overall service was still slow--it took 20 minutes just to pay the bill. I wish there were something redeemable about the experience, but there truly wasn't. Had the service been better, I might not have written this review. As it stands, I cannot recommend it. read more

I went here for a quick lunch split. Had seating inside hut more on the outside. It was definitely hard getting service because only one person was working and she wouldn't come outside (where I sat and other people). I got eh ravioli and it reminded me of the pack from costco. It was decent and it had different shapes of ravioli which was interesting. It was a very big portion so I recommend shading. We came here for the first time in a couple of years and it still is a fantastic hidden gem of a restaurant with outdoor dining area, friendly service, and amazingly European style food here in Maui. I had a Greek when plate with a Greek salad and roasted potatoes very tasty my partner hat and the chicken cordon bleu, which is really very good which is signature dish. They have a limited cocktail bar and they were able to make me an old fashion which I liked. They had a strawberries and Grand Marnier with vanilla ice cream that was very tasty. Continental menu, which you don't often see in the US. It's basically a "best of Europe" selection, and heavy on German/Swiss in this particular rendetion. Everything was pretty tasty with some standouts like the crispy potato Rösti. I recommend the Beundner Teller appetizer, too. It's an excellent charcuterie board. The other dishes were good but nothing outstanding. The patio dining is pleasant and quiet in the evening. Service is acceptable. Maybe you've been to Maui a few times or on your current stay you're looking to counter the abundant seafood and salad fare with, say, Bavarian cuisine. Yelp and Guy Fieri steer you to Brigit and Bernard's for some hearty meats and rich gravies. We finally made a point to see what all the fuss was about. We made reservations for a table for four. As expected, the place is on the corner of one of many large warehouses in the Maui industrial area near the port and airport. A large overgrown plumeria tree blocks the entrance. You find that the interior of the restaurant is now used for storage and is a museum to Guy's visits and the chef's European heritage. Seems we didn't need a reservation as only 5 of the seventeen outdoor tables/booths were in use. The one and only sparky waitress darted from table to table to kitchen like a game show contestant racing against a clock. In fact, she handed us the menus and told us our table was "on the other side of that big plant". Yes, water is a sealed plastic bottle. Ice in a cup if you ask. Stella A was the only remaining beer available. The wine list seemed more like words on the back of the menu. I am sure I'd have to uncork my own bottle. A well poured house Merlot would have to do. There is no ambience here. Tarps and come along strapping is the outdoor cover along with faded umbrellas with brand names. We sat near the exit door to the kitchen and it wouldn't stay latched. Warehouse workers headed to their cars in the adjacent parking lot. An island country station played on the one poorly mounted speaker. Leaves gathered under the tables and manhole covers were obvious on the sidewalk that is the dining room floor. Sigh. But the food is good. The blue cheese salad was large and delicious. Blue cheese dominated the plate. The Hungarian goulash soup sold out at lunch. Bummer. I heard it was great. The sauerbraten, spatezle and red cabbage ($28) was delicious and filling. A plate of Huntersteak ($26) was a hearty pork tenderloin, tender and smothered with mushroom herb gravy with spaetzle and red cabbage. Enough for two leftover meals. The pork Zeuri Gschnetzlets ($29) featured an overly salted Roesti potato- a six inch hash brown and vegetable du jour. In short, the food was what you'd expect from a German kitchen. It didn't disappoint. We closed out our meals with two servings of apple strudel with vanilla sauce ($8.50). Definitely homemade. Dotted with raisins under a thin sheet of dough and lightly sauced and not overly sweet. Very good. B & B's describes their cafe as "European cuisine with an island flair". Certainly it's European cuisine. But the ambiance does a disservice to Maui's island flair. read more

You wouldn't think there is a Ono tasting German / Italian/ European restaurant hidden here. We sat outside under the umbrellas and it was a pleasant lunch. Service was quick and courteous. Omg how did I not review this place already? I still dream/drool about the dishes there. I just wish I lived in Maui so I could bring home my leftovers (& there was a lot!) and eat it again. Soo good. I don't remember what I had but the bf's pork Wiener schnitzel was wonderful. And I usually do not eat potatoes Au gratin, like never, but you could just taste the wonderful homemade-ness of those potatoes (I'm sure that's not a real word but I'm rolling with it) it was like butter and cream not cheese so just lovely creaminess. I look forward to going back and trying the other dishes - it was so hard to chose the first time. And the atmosphere was so quaint and cozy. And the staff (owner?) was super friendly. Food: I will start this review with the positive. The food is actually ok. It isn't "oh you definitely must try this place" but, more like, this food is nice and I am happy to take home leftovers. Pasta Primavera - I got this with the linguine noodles ( it comes by default with fettucine ). Their pink sauce is yummy and their veggie selection in this dish, is actually quite carefully picked. No complaints. Rosti Potatoes - This is like a very good hashbrown pancake. Very crunchy and with salt and pepper it's the perfect breakfast. bread with mushroom gravy - feel free to skip it. it isnt that good. complimentary bread - it had a sweet taste to it, don't know what it was because the waitress told us nothing - also feel free to skip. Not good. Chicken Cordon Blue - My dad said it was good. The potato au gratin on the side was good too. Ambience: it is a garden restaurant, so, you are seated out on their covered patio, and as the lights turn on after sunset you can see geckos playing on their lamps. Service: I would NEVER come back to this restaurant because of how bad their waitress was. She didn't tell us the specials, she didn't let me know that the default pasta will be fettucine - i had to explicitly ask, there was no seasoning on the table and she was SO slow that i had to walk up to her and ask her for salt and pepper and she simply walked away and handed my dad with the seasonings. SO RUDE. We waited over 30mins to get our check ( not like there were a lot of tables she was waiting on honestly ). She was just the most unpleasant person I have interacted with in the hospitality industry. This restaurant is better off without a waitress than with her. AWFUL. read more

I love that we have a German restaurant in Maui. They have a wonderful patio for seating - I don't think we've ever eaten inside. The service is always wonderful here, and the food is fantastic, solid, good cuisine. We have been coming here for years and it's very consistent in terms of quality and taste. I'm a huge fan of the jaegerschnitzel - it comes with the red cabbage which I'm always obsessed with. It has a wonderful home cooked taste to it. The lamb here is also amazing. It probably is the best lamb dish on the island. It's definitely a commitment since it's quite rich. Great beer, lovely, simple atmosphere with nice lights on the patio...it's definitely one of our go to restaurants. read more

Both entrees were delicious and we very much enjoyed sitting out on the lanai. The only negative, it's in a very industrial area, and kind of hard to find. This is one of those reviews where I'm kinda torn as there were highs and lows. I'll start with the pre-visit. The main page of their website spends a whole lot of space on reservations. They're recommended, what cards they like, how to can make them, how you can't make one, you can't for lunch online, bla bla bla and if you do make one they take a $25 deposit which you'll lose if you cancel within 24hrs. Now I'm sure there's a story here as to why but frankly I don't want to be punished for someone else's bad behavior. Annoying at the least. Ok let's talk food and service. Excellent fresh baked bread and butter and I love my soda from a can vs fountain but I don't love not being able to get a glass of water (bottled only). Brat pupu was Excellent! I love brats and these were fantastic as was the sauerkraut, onions and mustard. Thumbs up. My disappointment came from the entrée. I ordered the house special Zueri Gschnetzlets. I opted for the veal which was a market price of $42. By now y'all know nothing bothers me more that pricey food that doesn't hit the mark. Expensive and good, no problem, cheap and meh, ok it was cheap but pricey and meh, no bueno! The sauce was very bland requiring a half a salt and pepper shaker. There was maybe 2oz of veal and it was overcooked. On the plus side the roesti potatoes were wonderful (think really good hash browns). Service was great. Very nice and attentive. So the verdict? As I said there were highs and lows. Should you go? Sure, except order the brats as an entrée with a side of roesti potatoes and you'll be happy. Oh and don't bother with the reservation unless you're going during peak. read more

Had dinner with friends. I ordered from the posted list of daily specials and was delighted with Bernard's version of Chicken Parmigiana. The chicken breast was pounded to tender perfection. The marinara sauce that covered the chicken was indescribably delicious. The mozzarella cheese topping was baked to perfection. The spaghetti accompaniment was cooked to a perfect al dente. I am not sure what to say. Brigit and Bernard's, in the past, has been a favorite, a cultural treat, with very delicious Bavarian fare, and a somewhat charming ambiance. I have definitely had better meals here than the last one I was presented with. To start with, the one waitress on staff greeted our party of three with a "Do you have a reservation?" with out warmth or welcome, from about 20 feet away from where we were standing. It almost prevented us from following her any further on to the open air patio, where only one other table was seated. But we had been SO excited to make a reservation, so we continued onward, onto the patio, where some modern pop music was playing on a speaker. Why not some Bavarian music? People love that sort of thing at these sort of places. We were seated under a tarp being held together with tape, and our fist comment amongst ourselves was to wonder how much it would cost to just replace this old tarp with a new one. An unceremonious plunk of a special board, literally taken from the exterior wall was placed next to our table for our consideration, and our next thought was, how special are these specials that they are delivered in this manner, and also how long have these specials been on the special board? Looks like quite awhile. Nothing special about it, in my opinion. Food was brought to the table haphazardly; not everyone received their starter salads at the same time, sides of hot food came before the mains.... it was another disappointment, albeit not a huge one. But the food itself was most disappointing! The caesar salad was just store bought already cut up romaine, nothing fresh, with a flavorless, dry dressing. The veal bratwurst, usually the most delectable and favorite of our group, was off tasting... the red cabbage and spaetzle tasted old.... and the apple strudel was just .... not good, not fresh... heated in a microwave , no flakey fresh crust, too much sugar in the flavorless apples, the pastry was doughy... just awful really. Such a bummer of a meal. I noticed that the restroom and interior dining area, which is now closed due to covid, look very run down and almost like they are packing up and getting rid of things. Maybe they are closing down. Maybe that is why things have changed for the worse. This review makes me sad. We used to really really love Brigit and Bernard's, but feel that under the circumstances, we will not be returning any time soon. read more
