Disappointing and frustrating experience. My party of 2 waited over 90 minutes for our food. Tables surrounding us who arrived at the same time ordered, ate multiple courses, and paid the bill while we were still waiting. We made multiple attempts to flag down a server, who repeatedly acknowledged us but then looked away without checking in with what was needed. The food was fine, I may have had a more positive review of the food had it arrived sooner. But it didn't seem worth over an hour wait. This was extra frustrating because we had tickets to an event later in the evening, causing stress as we continued to be ignored. We came in prepared to order multiple rounds of drinks and dessert afterwards, but unfortunately after our first drink we were never checked on again.

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Bistro Hortus. We started with The Snow Goat - creamy, fresh goat with a touch of honey. It was on top of thinly grilled zucchini. The roasted tomato gel added a flavor and I am not sure what the smoky crumble, ,but it added a subtle smokiness. The blend of flavors was excellent and the presentation was impressive. Many of the reviews were for the Hortus Burger, so we tried it. It was made from organic beef, and topped with green apple mayonnaise, bacon, tomatoes and cheese. It was good, but we expected more. The meat was very good, but the mayonnaise flavor was very subtle and did not add much flavor. It came with fries and a salad. The fries were ok. The salad was served in a cute flower pot and was very good. We also shared the Quebec Trout with quinoa. It was amazing, tender and moist. The seasoning was a unique flavor and blend of beetroot juice, elderflower virgin sauce and cucumbers in a ginger oil. It was sweet, yet fresh. And also presented very well. Service was excellent, and we were not rushed , but had time to enjoy our meal. Reservations are recommended. I highly recommend .

the food was great, we ordered like 4 of the venison dish and my mom loved the onion soup (she said it was way different from any others). the server was nice and laughed when we ordered every appetizer (there were 5 of us). nice quiet inside free honey from a honeycomb. we came back 2 days later for brunch on our last day in canada... it didn't disappoint. 130 dollars for 5 people

I had a great bunch here! Give it a 4.5. The breakfast was filling and wait staff was very attentive. The inside was modern with a bit of a upscale homestead touch. All the bread here is gluten free, so anyone with celiac/gluten intolerance - this is the place for you! For breakfast entrees (only sat-sun), I liked that they serve fruit, coffee/tea, and bread with housemade jam as well. I really enjoyed their housemade jam with gluten free bread and a bit of...butter? For eggs they use duck eggs, so the eggs are huge and as an American this was pretty cool! We also got the french onion soup - which they pour the soup in front of us. It was the best one I've had on this quebec trip! Loved the flavor and how the soup slightly melts the cheese curds in it.

Fantastic brunch with great service. For your dish you get alot of accompaniments with granola, fruit, bread and coffee. The portion is big as well so come hungry.

We decided to visit Bistro Hortus because it was one of the only places that could accommodate 12 people on such a short notice. The restaurant was pretty big and not very busy. It's located in the heart of Quebec City and walking distance from a lot of the tourist places. I was most excited to try their French onion soup but it was a bit disappointing. The bread inside was hard as a rock and the cheese never melted. We also got their nachos which were interesting as they were made with taro chips instead of potato chips... I didn't hate it to be honest. It was a very different type of nachos than what I'm used to, it was carrots and sprouts as toppings. It tasted good though!! Their lasagna was my favourite, it was flavourful and came with a lot of cheese. The staff were friendly but it took them a long time to get the food ready despite it being very slow. We also told them to get things out as they are ready but it still took around 40-50mins for the food to come.

Amazing gluten free burger, fries and salad!

What a wonderful experience for dinner at Bistro Hortus! We came from out of town and didn't know that every dish there was not only delicious, but also gluten free! Yippee! Our pre-dinner cheese and fruit plate was delicious and served with a thin slice of gluten free rye bread. My husband, who is not gluten intolerant, had the lamb shank and I had the hamburger. Both were perfectly prepared. The red wine (GSM) perfectly complimented our meal. The service was friendly and helpful. I wish Bistro Hortus had a location in my home city!

I dined at Bistro Hortus during a recent visit to Quebec City and left feeling like I'd picked the perfect place for the trip's nice dinner. The food was as beautiful as it was delicious and creative across the board. The restaurant was cozy, but not cramped, with a calm energy. Our group of four included a vegan and a dairy free/gluten free diet, both of which were accommodated beautifully straight off the menu and with special requests. My sister, who is gluten free, said this was one of the best gluten free meals she's had. We started with the Bison Carpaccio, which was listed as deer on the menu, but considering I don't eat either often was no problem for me. I had the Montreal Mule which was incredible especially considering I'm not typically a whiskey fan. For my main I had the Walleye Tartar which was new for me and absolutely delicious. I'm still thinking about it days later. We ended the meal with the very yummy vegan chocolate cake. Bistro Hortus turns local ingredients into beautiful, creative, and delicious dishes while accommodating various special diets. Even if you, like me, have no dietary restrictions, Bistro Hortus should be on your list if you are looking for a great meal in Quebec City.

Listed on Eater's list of best restaurants of QC, I was hopeful it would be a great dinner. I generally trust Eater more than Yelpers. #sorrynotsorry Starting with the Onion Soup, I liked the elements individually, but didn't like it served deconstructed. I want my bread toasty and soaked with rich broth. Then covered in melted cheese. Not dry bread and a pile of room temp curds. I liked the soup. But also wish it had been served hotter. My smoked chicken with root vegetables was quite good. I enjoyed the signature dish. It was a delicate smoked poultry. Not the depth of smoke that will leave you burping smoke rings all night. It's more subtle than that. My favorite was the dessert though. Pouding Chômeur translates to "Poor Man's Pudding". A dessert that was created by female factory workers during the early years of the Great Depression in Quebec. It's perfectly rich and incredibly simple. With the soft cake drenched in maple fudge sauce topped with maple ice scream, I could have eaten those all night.

Some vegan and gf items on the menu. They brought an amuse bouche that had sour cream but they remade it for me without the dairy. It was tasty. They made the squash pancakes with fruit, gf granola and potatoes on the side to accommodate my gf and vegan needs. They were very helpful

We stopped here for dinner on our first night in Quebec City. We wanted a good, healthy but not heavy dinner and this restaurant was a good fit for that. Our drinks and food were good and the ambiance outside was really nice. It was a good night overall. I got the salad entree and my husband got the grilled chicken.

Darn you Canada! Darn you and your insane good ability to have foods made better than in the Yay…read moreArea! Ha ha ha! You'll know why I'll type this in a bit. Cochon Dingue, The Crazy Pig in French, is a chain of Quebec Provence French restaurants that according to their site combines bistro refinement with the feel of a local laid back atmosphere. It just so happens that I'm typing a review for the original location on Quebec City's Champlain and Traversiers intersection. Of course, you'll see both English and French on the menus, and I felt bad that my French is horrible as I visited Quebec City and Montreal, but remember. San Jose and the Bay Area as a whole is a Spanish speaking city area given its history, not French, and while I'm at it, Tagalog and Spanish are way more similar than Tagalog and French. It is nice that the Toronto cousin driving us around can still speak it to a point though. Before I forget, do realize that though there are two entryways, only one of them is really walkable, as the other's closed off. As I insert the old "Yes guys, the ladies are cute" and "Yes ladies, the guys are cute" statements pair, I notice how the place has that simple old school French charm, and I get that hospitality that will always stick with me. I wish I can remember what drink I had as it is pretty, but I do remember ordering a Quebec City pork sandwich (I need to coordinate after all as Mr. John Witherspoon would have wanted) and a pavlova dessert along with the group ordering a deluxe poutine. Oh, remember the "Darn you and your insane good ability to have foods made better than in the Yay Area!" statement I typed up, the second statement of this review? This is in regards of the pavlova. So, the first time I had a pavlova was at an Oakland/Berkeley Japanese restaurant called Iyasare (which I actually reviewed). I told our server that I had a pavlova in/near Oakland, and she asked me to see if theirs is better. Normally, I don't like nuts of some sort with berries in desserts, but this place made me actually like the format because a pavolva isn't so much of a guilt dessert, and with this in mind, I developed now the fondness of nuts with fruits with low guilt/guilt free desserts. I still don't like nuts with fruits in desserts, but that now only applies to guilty desserts. Our server went back to our table and asked if she and everyone else at Cochon made a better pavlova than the one at Iyasare. Seeing that I couldn't lie because Canada, I told her yes, which had her giddy. Go be giddy young lady! Yay Canada getting another food victory! The flaw. Seeing that "They made a better pavlova than my fellow Yay Area residents!" isn't a legit flaw, though my one visit was and is memorable, the one flaw the various locations have in general if I should even call it one is that they add Swiss cheese to their Philly cheesesteak sandwiches. I get that it's to have a healthy cheese, and French is spoken in Switzerland, but adding Swiss to the sandwich is a Philadelphia no-no. Cochon Dingue is quite a fabulous place. If it weren't for the perfect score Toronto places I reviewed, Fran's and Makilala (as Tsujiri is shown all over Canada, which is why I didn't type it up), this would have been my favorite Canadian restaurant. To Canadian residents not in Toronto, I'm sorry that none of your beloved restaurants will ever be my top Canadian spot, but remember. Toronto has the most Filipinos of all of your cities, and of course, I'll have that attachment like they do. At least you can hang your hat on how you have a place that makes a better pavlova than my fellow Bay Area residents! So, for people not from Canada, go check the place out, as it's that good! +/Cochon Dingue is cleverly divine for having some of the best hospitality I experienced, the simple old French charm and really good food. -/"You can't put Swiss cheese in Philly's classic sandwich, everyone!"

I ordered the half rack of ribs, which was a mixed bag. The flavor was good, but several ribs were so burnt they were completely inedible--straight to the discard pile. They came with a well-dressed Caesar salad featuring seasoned croutons and delicious shaved bacon, plus sliced fried potatoes that were crispy and not greasy in the least. The thick layer of BBQ sauce wasn't quite my style--I'm a dry rub girl--but I was too hungry to care much. No photos because I devoured everything. My dining companion had a chicken sandwich she raved about. She ordered a Nordic spritz while I indulged in some Quebec cider. Honestly, I expected more pork options given the restaurant's name, but they fed us quickly and efficiently, which was exactly what we needed. No real complaints except for those burnt ribs. The interior has eclectic, cool-looking decor that's worth checking out. Our waitress provided quick and efficient service as well.

The "36 Hour Beef Cheeks" w/miso celeriac purée and roasted celeriac did not disappoint. The beef cheeks were incredibly tender, fork tender to be exact, beefy flavorful and filling. The miso celeriac pure was very rich dressed up with the au jus. The flat iron steak with the roasted beets, fries and veal au jus might have been better in my opinion. The flat iron was a perfect medium rare and super tender. The Salmon Carpaccio was a great starter too. I also needed refills of the sough dough bread, it was easily addictive. All the dishes did not lack in letting the key ingredient taking a lead role. The staff was outstanding. I arrived slightly early and was happily greeted and seated quickly. We didn't have a reservation, but were fortunate enough to find seats at the bar--and honestly, it was perfect. For me, it was even preferable to the dining room, allowing us to watch the team at work while enjoying the warm and inviting atmosphere. We began with the Duck Foie Gras Terrine with pine forest spikenard, brioche tartine with larch and buckwheat praline, and a garnish of apples and aronia. We also added the sautéed foie gras, which elevated an already exceptional appetizer into something truly memorable. For our main courses, I chose the Québec Braised Beef Cheek with miso celeriac purée, roasted celeriac, wintergreen herb relish, and wild caraway veal jus. The beef was meltingly tender and deeply flavorful. My dining partner selected the Elzéar Venison Pâté en Croûte with balm poplar, Isle-aux-Grues plum mustard, hawthorn relish, and pimpina gel. Beautifully executed and rich with distinctly boreal flavors, it was both refined and comforting. We also shared a side of the duck breast lacquered with cranberries and schisandra, served with polenta flavored with dune pepper and braised winter lettuce. The standout for my dining partner was the polenta, formed into a crisp log with a beautifully crunchy exterior and soft center. He declared it his favorite preparation of polenta ever. From the attentive service to the inviting ambiance, everything was outstanding. Located in the heart of Old Québec on Rue Saint-Jean, Chez Boulay provided a delicious and memorable welcome to our holiday week. It was the perfect introduction to the cuisine, ingredients, and hospitality of Québec. Great food, great service, great atmosphere--simply perfection. Highly recommended. We would happily return on our next visit to Québec City.
