My granddaughter attended Bixby Oaks for the past 2.7 years. She loved every one of her teachers and they clearly loved her right back!! She learned how to read by age 3, she learned kindness, sharing, and responsibility from the love and acceptance shown by all staff. As a grandmother I was often unsure of the drop off/pick up rules but the staff were always patient and helpful. The main reason why I gave this center a 2 is because they have a teacher who intimidates the children through rudeness and aggressive behavior. The teachers name is Ms. Cindy. She lacks knowledge in the field of child development and perhaps she should look for another field of work. It broke my heart when both of my children told me that she would yell at them. I knew there was something wrong when my son would cry only when she would open the center and she was the only teacher in the center for the first hour or so. I feel horrible to put my kids through this experience and the first school experience should not be like this. The other teachers are nice and the children seem to like the other teacher. They do need some teacher assistants and better policies to have at least two adults at all times with the children. I pulled my children out and reported the issue to the supervisor. My son has been going here for a year and a half and he is in the pre-school class with Ms Cyndi. She is awesome and patient. I have always dropped off my son knowing that he would be safe and have fun learning new things. The school is always clean and organized. During Covid my son attended everyday. Our young (pre-toddler) son has been going to Bixby Oaks for several months and he now looks forward to showing up every morning. The teachers there are attentive, fun, and the children always seem to be having a great time whenever I am dropping him off or picking him up. They always give me a detailed report of how his day went with specific notes on his little check-in sheet and how he was doing that day as well. During the time my infant was enrolled at Bixby Oaks Children Center I encountered numerous problems including but not limited to: My infant being injured and staff being unable to determine how the injury occurred. As a result of said injury, my child required emergency medical care. See below for additional concerns: Rude staff that lack of insight surrounding child milestones and development. Staff and teachers failed to comply with licensing polices and the childcare center lacked age-appropriate curriculum. Staff members and teachers demonstrated implicit bias toward myself and my child. Please conduct a full assessment before enrolling your child at Bixby Oaks Children Center. This review is for the infant room. This daycare just wasn't a good fit for us. It seems like they have a life-is-hard-they-better-learn-it-soon approach that it's just not in line with our parenting style. They wouldn't help our 9 month-old with the bottle because 01010"he'll feed himself if he's starving", and they wouldn't be very mindful of his cries "he cries when he wants something" (no, he cries when he NEEDS something, that's different). He would barely eat a quarter of what he should have per day, and we wouldn't have time to give him enough milk after daycare before his bedtime aka we would be up all night to make up for the lost feedings. At some point, they even asked us to bring extra kleenex because of his runny nose. He did not have a runny nose, he was just crying all day. Also, we didn't get any report on his daily activities, besides how much he ate or slept, which was barely at all. At his new daycare, our son is happy and smiley all day. And eating as much as he should. Because we're new parents, that's when we realized that the previous daycare was not good rather than our son not adjusting. Who knows maybe Bixby Oaks will be a great fit for some other baby, I've seen happy babies there (mostly in the older rooms) and I'm sure all the teachers mean well. Definitely not for us! My daughter has been attending Bixby Oaks for a year and a half now and I will start by saying that developmentally my daughter has grown so much while attending Bixby Oaks. She knows how to count, her shapes, colors, etc. I truly believe that she will be well prepared for kindergarten. I have recommended this daycare/preschool to anyone that has been looking for child care. Also, the location of the daycare is perfect for me because it is located directly in the center of many of the places I frequent in Long Beach. The grounds are kept clean and manicured. In addition, the inside of the day care/preschool is also kept clean and always smells like it has been freshly mopped. The day care has caregivers that are very motherly and provide comfort to the infants and toddlers. However, the preschool caregivers/teachers are a bit more hands off which I believe is their way of building responsibility in the kids. Kids are taught to clean up after eating, get their own lunches, and use the bathroom independently. As for monitoring, cameras are installed throughout the building. Also, the directors sit in on the preschool classes each and every day. Parents are responsible for signing in/out and are charged $10 if they don't (I have been charged once for not signing in.). If I could give Bixby Oaks a 4.5 I would. I am only giving it a 4 because of one con. Bixby Oaks does not accept Debit/Visa cards anymore which is a pain for me because I'd rather use my card instead of remembering to bring a checkbook. read more

Our son started going to Bixby Oaks since he was just a year old. It was tough to leave your little one to strangers but at Bixby Oaks, we felt our son was in good hands after talking to Mr. Rudy and saw their students with their teachers. Our son was crying every morning when we drop him off thinking maybe he was afraid of someone at this place. It took a long time for our son to adjust but after months, as long as he sees Mr. Rudy, Mrs. Gloria and Ms. Jill he was good to go. We made a great decision and with Ms Anette's hep, our son can write and read. He is more than ready for KinderGarten. This is a great little place for your little ones. Because of the lack of reviews and poor experience with Bixby Oaks, I feel compelled to write a review (with the help of my sister) in hopes that it helps other parents (and/or family members) to make an informed decision when choosing a daycare for their children. Simply make an appointment to meet with the assistant director. A front office is the first impression of a business and this office is in a complete state of disarray. Stacks of paperwork and boxes line the walls spilling out into the middle of the office, leaving very little room to maneuver through. They have a video recording system that you can view (great idea), AFTER climbing over the boxes. At which point, when you finally view the video, it's grainy and out of focus. Among the chaos of paperwork and boxes, you will find a small kitchen where the children's food is prepared. Not exactly the best place to have your children's food prepared. Also, if/when you do decide on this facility, you will be asked to put together an emergency kit (another great idea) for your child. But they continued their trend of disorganization and our child's kit sat on a pile of papers on a chair in the front office for at least 4 weeks. When I finally decided to not bring my child here, our emergency kits were no where to be found. It took them about a month to finally call me and let me know they had located it. If you can get past poor presentation of an office, visit the actual area where your child will be. It's easy to get in/out. No code to enter. You do not need to check in with the office to get into any of the children's area. There is absolutely NO security. All you have to do is open the gate and walk on over to your child's room. You do, however, need to sign your child in/out on a sign in sheet and I was told that there is a $10 fee if you forget to sign in/out. Well, I forgot once and was NOT asked about it. I was able to sign it the very next time I dropped off my son. In other words, no one was watching. As for the room my child stayed in, it was below my own personal standards. The toys and books are too old and over used. The room smelled like a dirty diaper pail that had been Lysol'd over. There was always one too many kids crying with runny noses and usually 1 maybe 2 teachers attending to them. I understand the child to staff ratio is 4:1, but some of the staff seemed to be way overwhelmed and/or disinterested. My 14 month old son stayed for 6 weeks at 3x a week and he cried every single time we dropped him off . He disliked this place so much that as soon as we drove onto the grounds, he would start crying. He would even cry when being picked up. As if we couldn't get out of there fast enough. I'm really not sure why I continued to take him there, even with a bad feeling. I didn't want to be the overbearing first time mom that doesn't let there child do anything. I did my fair share of "daycare" research; I understand that children will cry the first couple of times at a new daycare. Yet, after 6 weeks, I had a feeling that this facility was not providing the proper care that my son (or ANY child) deserves and I decided to take him out. If anything, I really hope this review helps Bixby Oaks. This facility has great potential (especially because of its location), but the lack of professionalism, over all child care, and quality needs major improvement. My son has been at a new facility at 2x a week for over 4 weeks now and he's happy. Of course he cried the first week, but he hasn't cried since. There is no panic as we drive onto the grounds and when I pick him up, he doesn't point to the door to get the heck out of there. There are some days when he doesn't even want to leave. He comes home with art and different kinds of projects and is overall content. The most important thing is that I like this new daycare, I am comforted in knowing that he is well taken care of. read more

My daughter was coming from a different daycare and would cry every morning during drop off . Bixby Oaks was recommended by a family member and friend and their description of Bixby Oaks was exactly what we needed. She was there for 3.5 years until Covid hit March 2020 . She was not talking or potty trained in September, 2017 when she first arrived by November she was talking and by March, 2018 she was potty trained. By the time she was two she could sing the nursery songs and loved story time . By age of three she knew her colors , shapes , color inside the lines. By four she knew her alphabets , numbers and how to write her name . We had a good experience with the three preschool teachers we worked with on a daily basis, they are nurturing and have control over their class. I never had any issues with staff . My daughter loved her teachers and friends. We keep in contact with two families that we made friends with because of our children. You can call Mr. Rudy to set up time to tour the facility. My son started attending Bixby Oaks when he was 10 months old. After visiting over 10 daycare centers, none stood out more than Bixby Oaks. Starting with the aesthetics of the place. The grounds are impeccable. Gustavo is the handy man on site and works daily. You walk into the facilities and it smells and looks clean. The toys are washed in water/bleach daily as are the kitchens. The gardens and plants are lush and healthy. The tree leaves and swept daily and the entire facility is spotless. My husband and I joked that we would pick this place over all other sites if we could go back and be kids again. It is a very welcoming place and it makes you want to be a kid so you can play there. I also liked that the parking is private and the entrances to all classrooms are in the back of the facility and not on Long Beach Blvd, which is heavily trafficked. You would never know there was a center there because there are so many trees surrounding the façade of the building. The teachers in the infant room are great. Ms. Claudia and Ms. Ruby are the lead teachers but they have assistance from Ms. Linda (in the A.M./opening hours and Ms. Amy in the P.M./closing hours). I worked as a daycare teacher myself (in a very expensive and reputable place) and the activities Ms. Claudia does with infants surpasses any infant daycare I've ever worked or visited. She has a weekly calendar of events and activities that she does with the kids. They range from puppets, to books, art, time outside, bubbles, dancing, etc. I was shocked to see there was an actual curriculum planned in advanced, even at the infant level. The room is beautifully decorated and she changes the bulletin board monthly to reflect the "theme" of the month. Not to mention, Ms. Claudia takes pride in keeping the room and babies clean. My baby comes home with a different change of clothes every evening. Ms. Claudia and Ms. Ruby rinse all bottles, bibs, and dishes and change the babies into clean clothes after lunch or daily activities if the clothes get soiled. They also pack all bottles and tuppers into the diaper bag for each parent before their scheduled pick up so they don't have to walk into the classroom and collect all of their child's items themselves. Not many daycares take time to do that. In the 5 months my son has been attending daycare, he has come home with over 25 pieces of "Art work." They range from foot and hand prints converted into animals and things, to mosaic paper (small square cut outs glued onto paper), to many other creative things that Ms. Claudia has them work on. It is so much fun to walk into the classroom and see the children's artwork displayed on the walls and bulletin boards. Ms. Claudia definitely applies theory to practice in the infant classroom and it is evident her Child Development coursework (major) is materializing with the kids she works with. He also sings (hums) the songs Ms. Claudia sings and recognizes books that are read to him. When my son started taking his first steps at daycare, Ms. Claudia was quick to pull out her cell phone and film him so she could share the big milestone with me. I would've been so sad to have missed his first steps but she was so sweet to record it for us and later email it to me. For that, I will be forever grateful. My son has always a hard time sleeping and night and taking naps during the day. My biggest fear when I started him in daycare was that he would not nap there and make each teacher's life a living hell. To my surprise, the staff all managed to get him on a routine and encourage him to fall asleep on his own in the crib. I couldn't believe he was taking 2-3 hour naps without assistance falling asleep. I asked Ms. Claudia to film it for me. Sure enough, he was placed in the crib and handed a blanket and asked to lay down to rest. He was comforted and had his back rubbed and within minutes was humming himself to sleep. The teachers try to place all kids on a schedule- although when they are smaller infants, the teachers will put them down for naps as often as the child needs to. Ms. Claudia and Ms. Amy play soft classical music for the kids when preparing them for nap time and the children become familiar with the naptime routine. My son now sleeps 3-4 hour naps instead of two separate naps. You are responsible for bringing the following items on a daily basis: bottles, food, extra change of clothes, 2 bibs. You also must check the child in and out daily and fill out a day sheet report that specifies what time the child woke up, what time you will pick up, how many bottles and food items were packed and if there are any concerns or things to look out for that day. The teachers then fill out the rest of the report as the day goes on. Diapers are changed every 2.5 hours, unless requested otherwise. Diapers and wipes are stocked by the parents and an emergency kit is requested for each child. I couldn't be happier with this daycare! read more

I was a little concerned when I saw the negative reviews about the staff being rude, but I decided to establish my own opinion and schedule a tour. What a pleasant surprise! Mr Rudy gave us the tour and he was wonderful. Not rude. Actually very sweet and polite and very patient. We decided to enroll after meeting several staff members and watching them interact with the children. I am a teacher at a nearby school and I am confident my children will be happy here and am excited for them to start! read more

My son has been attending Bixby Oaks since October 2012, two weeks after he turned 2. When I first went searching for a preschool, I visited 5 schools and really didn't like any of them. When I visited Bixby Oaks, I loved it immediately. I enrolled my son that day and he started the following week. When he first started attending, he barely spoke. Our pediatrician wasn't worried but as a mom, I was concerned. During his first two weeks, he would cry every time I went to drop him off and would cry when I picked him up. I was growing concerned about his experience after reading that first review. However, after about 1 1/2 - 2 months, the crying just stopped. After 2 months at Bixby Oaks, he began talking more and now after 4 months, he talks NON-STOP, knows his colors, counts and recognizes some of the alphabet. The teachers are awesome, kind, compassionate and are always make time for me when I ask how he's doing. Now, when we wake up in the morning to go to school, he asks to see Miss Cindy, Miss Cindra and Ms. Jill. I am truly grateful my son has "strangers" who care for him as much as I do, and as a parent, that is the main important factor. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a preschool for their kids. read more

My son has been at Bixby Oaks Childrens Center for 4 years now. I truly believe this facility is well-run by it's Directors & has great, caring teachers. I remember years ago being so impressed with the teachers who cared for the wee infants. And througout the years, all the teachers my son has had have impressed me a great deal. I owe a debt of gratitude - - My child is testing way ahead of what he should be -- he is truly "Kindergarden ready" and then some! I feel a huge part of my son's success is a direct result of his education at Biby Oaks. He was taught as his own pace, and therefore had the ability to surpass even our highest expectations. At Bixby Oaks, they are organized, fair, and truly care about the kids there. All the children are treated with great respect. Seeing the yelp rating made me join yelp just to give a more accurate grade. My daughter has attended this day care for a year now, and she's almost three years old. They are reasonably priced ($197, 5 days/week because she isn't potty-trained yet) and have a good program for the children. I especially appreciate the facilities: lots of shade trees so you don't have to worry about excess sun, outdoor playgrounds separated for toddlers and preschoolers, and lots of cool spaces inside. The teachers (I call them that even though I don't know if they have any accreditation) are fantastic. If you think that they are rude, you probably don't appreciate that children need rules, consequences, and discipline. Adults need them, too. I saw another review threaten, "I'm going to report this daycare! Staff is RUDE. And I witnessed an employee pull and snatch a little boys shirt." If you think that "being rude" is something that warrants reporting, you just don't have a clue about what real abuse is. Even though my daughter can be clingy, she loves going to "school" here. Even if I didn't work full time, I would still send her here to give her opportunities to make friends and work on her social skills. It's clear that the teachers care about her, and they celebrate her achievements with us. They know how to teach skills, including self-discipline. I went to this school to see about putting my child in it and I was taken off guard by the disarray of the main office. Then the gentleman on the phone was sitting there and another woman was there and I told her I was for a tour and she said someone will be with you. So I stood there. after I waited for about 10 mins the gentleman, who had been sitting at his desk, asks me if he can help me. At that point I wa skeptical of the facility because I felt that was rude. During the meeting his was disorganized and rude when I asked specific questions about the education of the teachers and the curriculum. upon leaving I stopped and spoke to a teacher who admitted the owners were rude even to them.... that was the icing on the cake for me... After this horrible experience I went next door to Oakwood academy and have been overjoyed at my decision to take my child to Oakwood instead. There education, curriculum, and facility beat Bixby's hands down!! They even have extracurricular activities and they go all the way up to 4th grade!! read more

My son loves coming here and gets so excited when we pull in the parking lot. The staff is very nice and loving to the children. He is about 20 months old and has been a student here since he was 6 months old. My son has learned a lot and is so social now which is very important to me and my husband because our son is an only child (and probably will be for awhile). The babies/toddlers only eat what you pack them and the staff will rinse your dishes so they don't get stinky. If all the food isn't finished the staff will leave it so you can see what was consumed. I loved that they fill out a eating/sleeping/dirty diaper log for the infants and that the daily lesson plans/schedule are posted for the toddlers. It makes our evening activities more fun and meaningful because we can connect with him and "discuss" his day (even though he's still not old enough to talk haha).
