    Veal Piccata

Spent a nice family dinner here during our visit to Virginia. We got and shared a clam appetizer which was phenomenal. We ended up taking the extra sauce home and using it for dipping bread in (leftovers). The ambiance is nice and romantic, they dimmed the lights while we were there and the whole restaurant seemed warm and inviting. We had several people in our party, so we got to try several dishes including the Veal Piccata (my dish), the ravioli, rack of lamb, and a crab cake special. Everything was superbly cooked and presented. The table service was excellent, and accommodating. The main course meal did take a bit longer than we had anticipated, but the staff informed us and apologized for the delays. We had my daughter with us (3 years old), and I'd say that the restaurant isn't the most kid friendly, but we had brought a game and toy for her to play with and everything was great!

Let me start by saying what a charming town. So worth the stop! This tiny restaurant sits on Main Street, in an old brick building which was probably built in the early 1900's. Upon entering we were greeted immediately by the waitress and were seated at a beautiful table. The menu offered many options from light to heavy. We opted for a couple of glasses of Chardonnay, cup of Cream of Crab soup, Cobb Salad and. Crab cake Sandwich. The Cream of Crab soup was a little disappointing-the soup itself had the flavor but was runny and offered little crab. I personally would have topped the soup with a small scoop of crab, makes a pretty presentation. Regardless the salad and sandwich did not disappoint. Looking forward to trying other restaurants in this charming town.

Love that tall lamb burger. I'm trying to break the habit of ordering every time I visit. I'm addicted!

Attentive (not too) service. Oyster appetizer, rockfish main (split) filled us and left us with happy moans at each bite. They happily split the entree and the portion was plenty.

George may not have slept here, but he may have stopped by for Sunday brunch on occasion during his Yorktown Campaign or his presidency. The Washington Hotel bears his name and it has been rehabilitated and maintained in colonial style to feel genuine and welcoming. When I walked in they were doing a bridal shower, so I grabbed a stool in the barroom near the back kitchen. Service was amenable despite working their tooshies off for the bridal party. I didn't mind waiting and having a break from the long drive home from Newport News. There were several ghosts accompanying me at the bar. The food was excellent. Veggie Omelet and Potato Hash were both farm to table fresh, and the coffee was brisk and hot. Worth the wait. The hotel was as much museum as bed & breakfast. Tons of charm without being gitchee. And, right off Route 13 on the Eastern Shore. Easy on and off. Five Historic Stars for Sugar Water and the Washington Hotel.

I never had a pork chop sandwich, so I decided to give it a try. I was surprised to see it was none-in, but tasty for sure. I did t expect it to be just a pork chop on a sandwich roll. Wondering if I should have included toppings. The waitress didn't ask so I just went with the flow. I did ask for hot sauce to kick it up a notch. The waitress was very nice and attentive. The menu has a lot of comfort foods on it. The atmosphere is casual and relaxing. Check them out!

However I would recommend having shorter nails for food service , nails looked too close to my food during drop off. The popcorn shrimp and nuggets are frozen then fried perfect for kids , not adult taste buds . The smothered pork chops were tooo tough to eat to, unable to even cut with the steak knife provided, and difficult to chew and swallow , but the gravy and onions were good (I mixed that with my mac and cheese ohh good ) . The mac & cheese and sweet potatoes were good. The corn bread, sweet tea and butterfly shrimp were amazing. The cabbage was very mushy, was able to eat some with hot sauce. The seating was comfortable And the restaurant and restroom is clean. The scent of the soap in the restroom was amazing. I would come back but only for the corn muffins.

I took a pic of the "jumbo" scallop entree. The original Basket version is just 4 scallops and fries for $17, that was my original plan. Even though the scallops weren't local, I was encouraged to get the entree version which had 4 more scallops (so 8 total) and an Xtra side, which I chose Mac n' cheese (house made). But this entree version was $31. So for $14 more I got a scoop of Mac and 4 of these pitiful scallops. I'm sorry but that is egregious. That's highway robbery and there's NOTHING added in the entree variant that justifies that kind of price. The basket version, isn't justifiable at $17 given what's here. Not to mention that its not even plated and everything was in a to-go format. There were flies everywhere that kept crawling on me and I was just ready to leave the moment I recieved my food. Softshell crab and the rest of the food is good. But not THAT good. Two basket-type entrees ran us over $70.

It's homey inside and I love the decor with various sea and fishing themed items hanging - kind'of reminds me of the way a Cracker Barrel looks. We were seated immediately at about 6pm and greeted quickly by the sweet, Diana who took really good care of us. Pleasant the entire meal and quick with any refills or requests we had. It was lobster night but we chose to go with several things so we could try a bunch from the menu since we didn't know when we'd be back again. They had tons of daily specials on a board when you entered and I chose to go with the fresh Halibut platter with a side salad. We did a half pound of steamed shrimp, bacon wrapped scallops and a side of fries as well. Hush puppies were big and crispy, a bit too greasy for me, but they were a nice few bites to take the edge off while we waited. Served with butter. The shrimp were large and fresh - we were told fresh from North Carolina and I believe it. Some of the best steamed shrimp I've had. My husband absolutely devoured them. My halibut was grilled and was simple, fresh, and high quality. Really good cut of fresh fish and excellent size and flavor. It was around $34 for the entree. Not cheap, but delicious! Bacon wrapped scallops were good - they could've been cooked a few minutes longer to make the bacon crispy as it was a tad undercooked/soft but still good quality and flavor on everything. All in all - solid meal with good service in a charming local spot. We discussed it after leaving and decided this is going to be our go to when driving the Eastern shore from now on.
