ROAD TRIP!!! yeah! My old man, my booger-eater and I headed down to Pismo for a quick overnighter to do some dune riding. BJ's was a great company to rent from (there are a few choices) and I will rent from them in the future fo sho! The staff at the shop were sweet and helpful and Mike & the other fellas down at the beach/dunes were aces. Their ATVs were well kept up and ready to go. My brat kid road an automatic 150 but could prolly bump up next time to a bigger ride. I road a 250 and that's just about right for me (I'm a novice). My dad road a 400 manual clutch (he's been riding all his life) and we all had no problem keeping up with each other. Perfect, over cast day and we were done and ready to shove-off by noon so we missed the afternoon wind. All in all, it was a perfect morning ride and I can't recommend BJs enough! read more

BJ's is absolutely the best outfit for rentals on Oceano Dunes! Just got back from another amazing trip, and Sherry and team in the office, and Anthony and the rest on the dunes make it all so effortless. Great equipment, always reliable, and absolutely no hassle. Sherry has gone above and beyond twice for me and my family. On our first trip in 2019, they weren't running the shuttle out to the beach office at the time. We hadn't brought a car that trip since it was the maiden voyage in our RV, and I wasn't taking that out on the dunes! She came through by actually loaning us her personal 4x4 truck to get out to the ATVs. Saved our vacation and made us customers-for-life. Just this week, I took my oldest out for his first time on the dunes. We'd originally booked a trip for late March 2020 that of course was canceled due to COVID lockdowns. Lots of changes as a result, but zero hassles -- we were out on the dunes in no time. I opted for the high-end Maverick and holy crap that was so worth it! Actually looking at getting one for myself as a result -- it's that good. My 19-yr old loved the 300 he rode and they gave us an extra hour due to the COVID craziness. We plan on going back at least a few more times before they shut the OHV riding down for good (boo!!!). Don't think twice -- just go with BJ's, you'll never regret it! These guys get my 100th review over my 80+ pending reviews lol! This was my first time I had gone ATVing and it was pretty entertaining (and scary)! We had a 10 person reservation, so we went to the not near the beach shack to check in. It took almost an hour to check in. The line was long and it seemed like they only had one credit card scanner in the back. Why not in the front I have no idea. Even when we got to the front, just charging each of our groups' cards took a while. This is literally like the only thing they need to improve upon. Anyway, price $70/2hrs + $5 gas fee per person. Group discount does not allow you to use your Yelp Check-in gas coupon :( After all the checking in, you go down to the beach (park on the street). There is a shuttle bus/truck to take you to the actual RTV area where they give you your helmet and instructions on operating the ATV. Off we went for 2 hrs exploring to the very end. There is lots of room to just go off with your group and get away from everyone. There is about a 1/2 mile inland to 7 miles down the coast that you have. Some first advice, don't use your brakes. Just let go of the thumb accelerator and you'll slow to a halt quickly. Also just stay in gear shift 2. That will keep you going fast enough w/o going too fast. Try to be fast aggressive on the flats so you can get used to the speed and enjoy yourself more. For those who complain about the heat on your legs, don't tightly straddle the seat if you can help it. I wore jeans and long sleeve shirt and I was fine. Most of the time I was standing up cause the bumps can be a bit much. Make sure to bring a camelback of water or a backpack with at least 1 bottle per hour. It is easy to get dehydrated on the sand in the sun. Be careful after driving fast uphill, you dont want to end up flying over the other side and falling down. Basically only full throttle going up hill and flat. If you feel scared, just let go of the accelerator. Be careful of small dips, thats how I was thrown from the ATV and my chest hurt from the impact with the ATV and the sand for a month. It is likely your lower back will be sore the next day as all of ours was. Anyway, it was a good experience and I would do it again. read more

Had my first experience at the Oceano Dunes. We rented a 4 seater, a Honda UTV. Our reservation got pushed back because of the beach tides which was out of their control. Unfortunately this threw a wrench in our trip plans since we were only here for the weekend. They are pretty adamant about not giving refunds. They said refunds are only approved through management so I had to call throughout the day but there was never a good time to catch him since he's out in the field so we were left hanging. They gave us the option to come back and redeem our credit within a year but we didn't want to be constrained by that. Instead, we rescheduled on our last day here and glad that it turned out well. This was also the cheapest price I could find for what we got online. Overall, the service at the office was honestly meh not super great but I will say the people working on the beach were very nice and when we had trouble with the UTV wheels when we were going too slowly uphill someone was very quick to help us (we just all had to help shake off the sand from the vehicle). Naturally the dunes can be a bit scary when you experience a dramatic dip but avoid those at all costs as there was a ATV that had flipped over right before our eyes! read more

Do you like sand all up in your cracks? If you don't believe me, come try it for yourself. Going ATV'ing is an experience like no other. Since it was a last minute decision to do this, we only had an hour left before closing time. Luckily they were flexible with us since most people go for the 2 hour time slot. They charged us half the price (came out to around $37) and we had free gas tanks when you do the Yelp Check-in offer. Yay for Yelp! After signing our lives away on a waiver, we were given the option to choose between either a manual or automatic vehicle. I chose the automatic since I'd never done it before. The guys were super helpful and handed us our helmets. After a brief instruction on how to operate our vehicles, we were off. They gave us directions on how to get to the vast sand dunes and after a few slow revs of the engine, it didn't take me long to want to speed up. As I approached the sand dunes, I couldn't believe how big of an expanse it encompassed. Going up the hills, I almost felt like I was in the middle of the Sahara desert (only with the beach behind me). It was thrilling, scary and so much fun. Yup, so much fun until you get *STUCK*. Yes, it happens all the time and if you happen to drive into a part of the sand that is too soft, then your wheels can just do revolutions in place. Luckily, there are so many people out there riding around so you are never alone. Sooner or later, someone will stop and help you pull your ATV out of the sand. Just our luck, we are helped by a semi-new employee. there were a number of questions she couldnt really help us with but we were totally understanding. i actually felt bad that she kept asking questions and the other employees were more concerned with their own thing. so long story short, we finally get situated and figured out what atvs we were renting and what size each of our helmets were. Our paperwork is then passed over to someone who was more knowledgeable and thats when things just went downhill. We were a group of 6 people, with 3 different yelp check ins, which gives you 1 free gas per check in ($5.00 value). So they should ring us up for 6 atv rentals, 6 helmets, and only 3 gas charges. We let the employee know that we will be paying in pairs so then she should be ringing up 3 separate transactions. simple enough right? tell me why she rings up the first couple for three atvs and then the second couple for another three atvs..... and then when we went up to pay, she rang us up and was about to take our money too?? thats when she caught herself and told us she over charged the first two couples. Not a single apology as given and she had the audacity to say that she heard us say we wanted to do two seperate transactions. what a effin joke! if that was the case, why was she just about ready to take our money if she knew she charged a total of 6 atvs already? when our 2 hours time limit was up, we came back to drop off area and they are supposed to call in a pick up to take us back up to the parking lot where all of our cars were. that took way longer than it needed to be. and when the guy pulls up, hes in a truck that has the atv beds attached to it. Clearly that wasnt meant to be the ride to bring us all back. We stand around not thinking this was our ride until the guy rudely shouts over to us. The worker who called in the ride for us even asked him if it would just be better to take the suv parked on the side that wasnt being used. Not thinking about the comfort of us patrons, he brushed off that thought and quickly responded with a NO! we are then told to squish into the truck fit for 6 people max, when our party alone was 6 heads. RUDE RUDE RUDE!! PISMO/GROVER BEACH has plenty of rental spots for atvs..... pass on this establishment. We did a mini-vacation since this is the ending of spring break for my high schooler. This is the 2nd time we've rented from BJ's; first time was almost six years ago and today, 4/22/22. So we got to the office about an hour earlier so we can fill out the required paperwork. There were only two people before us, but so the young lady who helped us was able to get us through in about 15/20 minutes - thank goodness I told my crew to watch their YouTube video before we went to the office! We only purchased two plastic eye glasses to protect our eyes from any possible contact with the sand... we should've rented really good protective goggles because it was really windy out there and sand blew and ended up getting into my eyes! We should've purchased some cloth face masks too to help protect our face from those gusty winds , which we didn't realize it and it wasn't mentioned to us. Once we got to the parking space and was waiting for BJ's driver those gusty winds picked up and started blowing sand all into our eyes so I ended purchasing 5 bandannas from Steve's atv rental truck and I caught heat for it too from the two guys at the site who deals with handing you the atv's and other required equipments. The driver who picked us up and dropped us off at the site was awesome!!! We all had a great experience. We'll be back again 4 sure! read more

Took the wifey here for her birthday. It was both our first time. I know how to ride motorcycles, so I wasn't nervous or anxious on what to expect. I just knew it was going to be fun. My significant other of course was the opposite. After easing her nerves off we went to rent some ATVs. The only reason I picked BJ's is because it had the most/best ratio ratings on YELP. As a YELP Elite, I had to trust what the reviewers say. It is important to know that the store front office where you pay and sign up is about 5-10 mins away from the actual location where you will begin on the beach. To sum it up, you sign up and pay at the office/store front. All the ATVs are there too, but they have a trailer that brings over X amount to the beach for reservations and walk ins. In contrast, there are other rental places where you can pay/rent on the beach, but again I went with YELP rating. So after you pay, you have to drive your vehicle on the beach and meet with the staff of BJ's who will have your ATV's ready and a brief instruction. **NOTE** You have to pay $5 to drive on the beach. Walking is NOT an option unless you want to walk 40-50mins based on rough estimate from the shop to the spot on the beach. Another reviewer mentioned a s free shuttle? I was never offered that. It may have just been slow on the day we went. The guy at the beach was nice. He knew we were ready to go so he gave us a brief tutorial. It was sufficient. We both got the 250s. It is semi-automatic. So you just gas and shift with left foot shifter. Our ATVs didn't have any problems, but the shifting could've been smoother. I know some tricks of the trade to help it with the shifting so it didn't bother me, but I did notice and it may be annoying for others. Oh, this was just for one bike. My significant other and I had switched and one bike definitely shifted better than the other. Now, another big question others may have, DO I NEED TO GET THE 250? OR CAN I GET BY WITH THE 125. Ok I can answer that, if you just plan to cruise the beach and do some "weak" small hills, then YES you can get away with the 125 and pay less. BUT if you plan to take on the sand dunes and really work those steeper hills, get the 250. Staff was very nice and professional. It was fun. Minor issues, but not enough to justify deducting any stars. Their website is very informative so read up for more details. read more

My family and I went here for a road trip activity right before the pandemic hit California and it was really fun! For some reason, I didn't expect it to be this thrilling and exciting! It was my first time riding an ATV however it was pretty easy to learn how to maneuver: The staff were awesome and very helpful. They provide you with a bandana mask of your choice, drive you over to the dunes, provide helmets, and teach you how to use the four-wheelers. We ended up renting the Maverick 800 for 2 hours , on the way there the guy on the shuttle told us we were not going to have enough time to ride for the full 2 hours & wouldn't be refunded a pro rate for any hours we didn't get to ride , so we said we would rather just ride for 1 hour & get the other hour refunded. He said that was ok & wrote down 1 hour our paperwork , then once we got the helmets they were extremely dirty & stinky plus it was missing a visor! He said there was no more helmets to switch out after we got to the UTV it was missing doors on both sides & felt very unsafe & sketchy, we drove it to the dunes & this utv is not made for the dunes! It feels like it's going to roll over at any point & just slides going up or down a hill it does not actually drive straight. We went back after our hour was finished & called the office to tell them that we were only doing 1 hour & were getting refunded for the other hour we didn't drive but paid for , the lady said she has to get ahold of the manager & that she wasn't sure if we could do that , she said she would call us right back & didn't call back after 1 hour had already gone by. The whole time the manager was there at the dunes. And everyone at the dunes said they can't do anything we would need to go to the office. So we did and when we got there they said they can't do anything that the guys at the dunes could. So just gave us the run around. And then said we could wait for the manager until 8! Mind u we live 2 hours away and they knew this. This was the worst experience ever and I hope non of you actually trust these people with you're hard earned money. They couldn't make this right over 70$ that's it they would rather loose a future sale and customer over 70$ trust you're gut feeling when you read these reviews and think it's not a good idea to spend money with these people because I wish I had! We have rented with BJ's twice - first time in July 2021(just after covid) and recently in June 2024. There was drastic downfall in our experience in renting vehicles from here. Last time the vehicles were relatively newer and helmets were clean. This time the experience was horrible. The helmets and vehicles were both very worn out and not worth the rental experience. Also, one of the vehicle had issue stopping very often which affected our full group. The pictures are too bad. I hope you can invest in better vehicles and helmets. We ended up making reservations for 12noon on 4th of july & we ended up waiting in the rental line for almost 2 hours (basically what the 2 hours we planned on renting for). I wish they had a better system of filling out the liability forms like having us fill it out while we're in line because, what was the point of making a reservation if we're standing in line waiting for hours anyway? Once we filled out the paperwork & drove to the beach to get picked up by the shuttle, we waited a bit longer due to a large party in front of us (wish they wouldve let the single riders go ahead of the larger group to accomodate, but I'm not super mad about it because I understand it's busy during 4th of july). Other than that, the ATVs were fun! If you plan on renting from here, make reservations online & plan to come an hour & a half earlier than your reservation time to be close/on track of your schedule. read more

Excellent team there at BJ's . We arrived early and the accommodated us. There is a lot of paperwork which could be streamlined, but they made it understandable and fairly quick. We rented three ATV, excellent working order and ran great. Shuttle ride was there and waiting both coming and returning, Office is close to the dunes, easy and quick drive to the pick up point from there. Except the driver parked crooked on a busy street blocking the entrance/exit to the store. When I mentioned it to the driver that he was causing a hazard his reply was: "Isn't that great!!" This review is about the reservation building. The actual ATV riding was fun and a great experience (except we had to walk) AVOID They were so rude and unorganized. Our reservation was for 1pm. We didn't leave until 3:15. We were accused of moving signs and not listening when names were called. One of the workers moved the sign! And the entire time we were there, no names were called. The two groups ahead of us were in and out, then we were next and given a hard time. Saying we needed to wait outside in the reservation line. There was only 1 line in the 3 hours we were there. I will NEVER use this company again. I won't even get into the obvious racism. 0/10 read more

I was a bit hesitant to book through here at first bc of some of the reviews, but it turned out to be an easy experience for us. I booked the first time slot online of the day. We tried to get there at least 30 minutes before but my daughter forgot her license (not sure she needed it but just in case) and we had to turn back to the hotel. At their check-in office, we were the 2nd family there so we waited about 10 minutes while they completed their paperwork. Basically, you are signing paperwork that says this activity is dangerous and you acknowledge it and you won't sue them since you already know what you're getting into. Also, we had to put down a deposit. I think it was $600 (this is based on the vehicle you rent), but I forget. It gets canceled when you return their vehicles. You can watch their video outside or online. We already watched it when they sent the email confirmation. Note: If you don't want to pay the 3% CC fee, make sure you pay with a debit card instead. We were directed to drive out to their pickup location which is a short distance away. The lot was full when we got there but, we managed to find street parking close by. We walked a short distance to the pickup location. Their driver, Floyd, was very nice and friendly and gave us some pointers on how far to go since we only booked an hour. He drove us out to their trailer on the beach where we were fitted for our helmets and waited for our vehicles. We are a family of 5 so my eldest daughter drove the 250ex and the rest of the family was in the 4 seater Pioneer. Note: They no longer provide goggles, so you can either purchase them there or bring a pair of sunglasses. We booked the rentals for 1 hour and I think it was enough for us since this is our first time there. We returned the vehicles and helmets back to their trailer location and then Floyd drove us back to the pickup/dropoff point. My boyfriend's ATV stopped working out of no where so we called the number provided to us incase we needed help & they brought out a new ATV to him within 10 minutes & we were off riding again. Rent a YAMAHA GRIZZLY 125 for my 10 years old son. The engine kept shutting off when gas released. My son stuck right outside of ATV parking lot immediately. We informed associate and was told after engine gets warm, the problem will be gone. NO, ALWAYS SHUT OFF. They could easily exchange for another one, but they don't seems to care. My son didn't want to play after 15 mins. When we return, we told the associate, they don't really care. Our two other rentals were fine. I can't believe I forgot to post this. I went to BJ's for my birthday in 2019 #precovid. Had a good time riding the dunes for the first time ever. Was able to get a same day reservation. Read a review from some other folks saying that the ladies at the desk were rude. The lady that I was working with was cool. She was straight to the point on everything. A lot of information being thrown at you very quickly but they want you to be able to have the most amount of time to enjoy the dunes. Just went this past weekend. Pismo Beach first timer. The workers in the rental office, specifically the blonde chick, and not to include the ATV rental folks on the beach (they were cool guys) hate their job and have mediocre/shitty costumer service. The shuttle guy with a beard was cool also. Coming to work for those in the office must be a drag, how sad. There was another female worker (brunette) who could have helped another group behind us who were waiting in the sun sweating their asses off but she was just standing around waiting to get off work and didn't seem interested in helping the other group up until I told them that there was a "sales rep" that's available, maybe she was blind, I'm not really sure. 0/10 on the customer service at the office. A tip to the owner(s), hire folks with smiles on their faces and who want the best for your business NOT those who make costumers feel dumb. Im a Marine Veteran and saw a Certificate of Appreciation (COA) on their wall posted up from a military type of group and laughed because I was so disappointed in the service they were offering i didn't even want to attempt to ask for a Military Discount. Furthermore, the ATVs (250 EX) require the power of THOR's hammer to shift gears, strongly recommend to go elsewhere. read more

Such an awesome experience!!! The whole check in process was smooth and easy (we arrived 30 minutes before for two people and it was perfect timing). The service as a whole was amazing throughout! From check in, shuttle service, and the guys out there helping with the bikes...everyone was so nice and helpful!
