Did you even ATV if you didn't walk away with a burn, scratch, blister, and/or outrageously uneven tan? On Saturday morning, our pack of 20 mobbed over to the office to sign our waivers and pick up equipment. The staff there were very friendly and well-informed; after a semi-quick rules and regulations rundown, we were directed to head over to the beach where an SUV would transport us to the dunes. As a first-timer, I was overly cautious and wary about how it would all turn out - I am a scaredy cat. I docked a star because once we were on the sands itself, the instructor didn't do that great of a job demonstrating (seemed to be rushing through the whole thing), but thank gosh the ATV was super easy to pick up on... There are only so many buttons, pedals, etc. Once on the bike and out in the dunes, my friends and I had a ton of fun, which was very much worth the price. As cheesy as it sounds, the cost was nothing compared the happiness it brought us. Such a fun experience; can't wait to ATV again! read more

I planned a whole weekend of fun in Pismo Beach for my boyfriend's birthday and one of the activities I had planned is the ATV. Prior to coming, I researched different ATV rental places and found BJ's. My top 3 rental choices (including BJ's) had mixed reviews but a friend of mine had rented with BJ's before so I decided to go with BJ's. My mom has a back injury so she only wanted to ride for an hour. Most of the rental places are for 2 hours riding time but I called BJ's and they had an option for just an hour. I reserved the ATV's for 9AM Sunday with Veronica. Sunday came and we were assisted with Veronica herself. We rented 4 ATV's and my parents were going to take turns because I had my 3 year old son with us. Instead, Veronica suggested us to rent the Pioneer (4-seater) so that my son can come with us which was so awesome! Everything was explained thoroughly by the girls in the front. We head to the beach and our vehicle got stuck in the sand. Luckily, the guys at BJ's agreed to help us get unstuck after our ATV ride. We had 1 Honda 400 EX, 1 Honda 250 EX, and 1 Honda Pioneer. All of it were in great shape and did not have any problems at all. The guys explained how to use the ATVs and welcomed any questions we had. Check out was very smooth and fast. I highly recommend doing the ATV ride with BJ's ATV Rentals. We plan on coming back to them in a couple of months. They are open 364 days a week according to one of the guys there!!! The first point of contact employees were so rude. We didn't reserve and did walk ins and the line was super slow. It wasn't until it was our turn that we realized why it was so slow. The workers didn't seem like they wanted to be there at all. They could have easily helped another group at the same time as us but the other employee was just standing around. We did the two hours for $82 and we weren't even asked what type of model we wanted. I tried to use the yelp check in for free gas and the employee said it was too late but we were still there paying so maybe she just didn't want to process it? They also didn't specify that the shuttle they provide is only from 301 pier ave to the dunes. So we had to walk back to our airbnb to pick up the car and drive the 1.3 mile to the shuttle spot. The employees who drove the shuttle were super friendly and gave us some info about the beach. When we were done atv riding, one of my friends told us how the atv leaked oil on his leg! One of his legs literally had tons of oil dripping and when we told the employees this, they just ignored us, pretending they didn't hear and just kept collecting the atv's. Not only does the service here suck but this place is a rip off. Sunbuggy has the same model (250) for almost 20 bucks less. DONT COME HERE! read more

The staff is friendly and helpful. Every one in the store was nice and the guys out on the beach who showed us how to use the atvswere even nicer. Very down to earth, reasonable, and fun. Get 5 dollars off with check in. The atvs were in good conditions. They give you a ride down to the atvs and back up the beach. My only complaint would be that the directions of where to go when you are actually riding the atvs could have been a little clearer. The whole experience was a blast! read more

They let my 8 year old boy try out a few different bikes to feel comfortable in which size is best for him. They offer discounts on the second day and discounts for getting there early. The shuttle to the site didn't take too long and the driver was extremely kind and knowledgeable. The people are really nice that work there. They also have a wide variety of ATV's to choose from depending on skill level which is nice because I'm a beginner. We made reservations which I highly recommend because from what I saw the wait can be very long. The only reason they got 4 stars instead of 5 is because the paperwork process takes a minimum of 30 minutes. Make sure you check and have them check the ATV before you take it out. Look around it. Take pictures of it. They are mostly old and worn out. They will try and tell you something is wrong with your atv when you return it. They tried to take our $100 deposit saying the axle was bent when we returned it. The family before was charged $80 because they supposedly left the parking brake on. This place is a scam. The outside workers are very unprofessional and rude. BJ's rentals has great customer service. I needed 17 ATV's for my boyfriend's birthday party and only had to put down $100 for the entire reservation. Paying and picking up helmets/goggles isn't at the actual dunes but is a short drive away. Once everyone was squared away and paid for, we headed towards the beach and were treated with such hospitality. They were all down to earth, awesome photographers and were straight to the point with teaching us how the ATVs worked. I also appreciated the hot dog costume that was put on the birthday boy for some of the pictures. While out there in a blaze of sand, one of the members of my group got lost. Sure enough, someone from BJ's flagged us down and asked if we were missing someone and directed us right towards where he was. I heard of horror stories from other companies that were making accusations and even making them walk about a mile out back to the store...You'll see advertisements walking towards the beach with a bunch of shops that boast extra low prices and this and that but I'd rather pay a little more for a peace of mind and to have people help me that look like they thoroughly enjoy their job. read more

We reserved 4 atvs and the check in was pretty smooth. We got to the area where they have to atvs and the paperwork was pretty quick as well and now they basically just told us how to work the atvs and we were all set to go. We start out leaving the entry place and my atv dies. We call them up and they respond pretty quick which is good. A couple minutes later while riding, my sister's atv dies. We were able to restart it. About 10-15 minutes in, my atv dies again. We restart restart it, and we were good to go for the rest of the rental session. I would say they got some good atvs mixed in with some older ones which is the reason this happened. The place isn't too bad overall. read more

From the time that I originally called (we are staying at RV park in Pismo), to the time that we brought the ATVs back, the experience was great. The only suggestion is: go early. We waited almost 45 minutes at the office checking in, due to a large influx of people coming in at the same time. For that I knocked off 1 star. As a professional business engineer: I highly recommend management hire a strategic operations consultant to optimize this process and improve your experience. Great prices. Remember to check in! Bring cash for the deposit or use a debit card to make things easy! You'll have to drive yourself to the beach and park but the directions are simple. Once at the beach they have a ride ready for pickup. $10 deposit for goggles but sunglasses were fine for me. Loved the ATV experience. Go for the semi-auto and shift, the ATVs are lighter than the full auto ones and it's easier to control/handle. I give this place a 4 due to the customer service we received at the beginning. The lady who helped us out in the beginning was disrespectful. She complained about doing multiple transactions. We asked her multiple questions and she wouldn't even bother answering them, she told us to refer to the paper we had. She was not polite whatsoever. Great service! We were a group of 3 and had no problems getting 3 ATVs on MLK Monday. The staff was nice and friendly. The address listed here is the initial shop location that you go to to pay and sign papers but after that is all set you need to drive to the beach area. And from there, you hope into one of their shuttle vans that you to the actual ATV site. This initial process will probably take 30 mins or so, so make sure to factor that in when you are planning your day here. Since our party was all first time ATVers, we all opted to get the full automatic model and had a blast. read more

We rented a couple of atvs for an hour. This was our second time. We had a lot of fun but it was kind of pricey and the amount of paperwork you have to fill out/sign is unreal! I heard someone comment that it was more paperwork than when he bought his house. We walked down to the beach where they met us and drove us down the beach to the rentals. Horrible customer service ! My son met with an accident because of improper guidance from the helper here. Firstly, not all the helpers here can speak proper English. Sometimes it's ok with adults like us but with kids especially first time riders they need proper information on how to ride this vehicle( starting it , slowing it down, how to pull brakes to stop it, etc. ) these people absolutely fail here. The person who instructed my son ran as quick as he can out of our sight post accident and other people were covering up for him by keeping him away. And to top it off front desk people are super rude. They didn't even care to have knowledge of what exactly happened at the dunes. The lady at the desk was showing us attitude for no reason. My first time ATV'ing in the Pismo Dunes and we had a smooth, friendly, and fun time with BJ's ATV. Just make sure you check in first and use the check in offer before signing paper work and paying or else you will just get a bandana. But in my case, I liked the bandana. Their office is located a few blocks away from the beach, but once you get there the drive to the beach isn't too far. Once you find parking near the beach, you walk to the entrance and wait for one of their guys to drive you all the way in. You don't have to pay for parking. I would recommend to others and come back for more. All in all, for 2 hours and for 2 people on the Honda 250EX, we paid $164. That included gas fee and the concession fee. read more

One of my fave memories from summer involves the beach. And a big, red motor vibrating between my legs. I mean, ROARING between my legs. Better prepare your thighs for an awesome workout. You're gonna be sitting on that ATV, clocking in speeds of up to 35 mph and you don't wanna get thrown off. A day trip to Pismo Beach from SF is totally doable. And fun. The rental store isn't actually on the beach, so allot for extra time to sign a waiver, fit helmets and pay. Like Chameleon's song, here's how you ride dirty: - grip your Atv with your thighs - when you speed up, it can get bumpy. Lift your butt up a little bit especially when going over humps or you'll get bruises on your tailbone area. Unless you're into that 50 shades of grey type stuff?!! - go with strong guy friends to pull you out of a sand trap. The bike weighs a ton, you'll need help. We tried to rent an ATV this weekend. They said just to walk-in, which we did, but they said they don't have anything available. So I made a reservation for the same day online for 3 hr later. which we arrived 1 hr ahead of reservation time, which it took more than 75 min , for waiting in line & for them to process the reservation, . then it took another 40 min to get to the beach, to pick up the ATV. ALL of the 4 ATV's that we got , were OLD, RUSTED, BUMPERS WERE STICHED IN, & the worse part was that the engine heat partially burned my right leg, since it had a hole in it, and I was very uncomfortable for the whole duration of the rental. Their explanation was," it is rental, it is old, & what do you expect " Ha Ha Ha, Their price was not competitive either. Other ATV rental had the same if not better prices, better service & better / newer ATV's, which we did the next day with Steve ATV right next to the beach Entrance. Do NOT waist your time or Money HERE. I forgot to mention , they told us the rental hourly fee includes everything, but the They charged $10 per ATV for Gas, which it does not cost that much for 45 min use, & another $10 service fee, / park fee, other. 3.5% credit card fee. read more

For our party of 11: ATV rental - $75/person for 2-hours Deposit - $100/person (but they will return the rental when you return the helmet) You get there. You pay. You sign your life away in waivers and forms. Fit and receive your helmets. You're ready to get on an ATV! :) From the BJ's ATV Rentals Office, we drove our cars to the beach and was shuttled in a truck/Suburban for free to the location where we would get our ATV's rentals. You strap on your helmet and one of the staff members will teach you the tricks of the trade on functioning the machine. It can be quite nerve-wrecking, but you'll get the hang of it! Ask questions when you're confused and make sure to listen, the staff are quite friendly and attentive to your concerns. Personally, I had a black ATV and it was better at turns and control, however the lever to accelerate was more difficult to push with my thumb than the red/yellow ATV's. My black ATV also exerted more hot air from side, so I got heat burns from it. In the end, I traded with someone in my group because the heat was a bit unbearable. Perhaps it was just my ATV, but just be aware and be safe of your ATV! Customer service was awesome. One of our ATV's broke down and after several people coming to help us, we threw the towel in and called for help from the staff. They fixed the issue and we were riding again :). The people at the office are kind, they even gave us recommendations for places to eat (Rib Line across the street is amazing ^__^) Some rules to be aware of: - If your ATV gets stuck in the sand and it's not mechanical, you have to dig yourself out. If a staff member has to come out and help you, you are charged $25. - For every 15-minutes you do not return your rental back on time you can be charged up to 1 hour LATE FEE.(For example: In my case, it would be $37.50 per 15-minutes). - Damages are not taken out of your deposit, rather you have to pay accordingly to the severity of the damage. -- Basically, read your flyer and know the penalties and consequences of all the different rules and such. TIPS: 1) RESERVE, RESERVE, RESERVE! Do not wait and drop in. Better safe than sorry. 2) Wear sunscreen and high socks--the ATV's gave me severe heat burn/rash. 3) Get ready to get stuck, a lot. Hopefully you have strong individuals with you who can pull you out or dig you out! 3a) Be prepared to spend much of the 2-hours digging yourself and friends in your party out. 4) Fanny pack or backpack, whichever that can hold some water for you. 5) Bring sunglasses. We were offered free goggles, but we wore our sunglasses instead. However, it seems they can charge. 6) Don't forget to check in for $5 off gas on your rental! read more

My friends and I came in when they opened. It took awhile for us to sign the paperwork, pay, and get our helmets. I was a little grossed out by my helmets as they smelled a bit funky. We rented ATVs for 2 hours- $70. $5 gas fee per 2 hours- free with yelp check in. $100 deposit is also required. We drove to Oceano Dunes and parked on the street. Then a "shuttle" took us down to the beach. The guy quickly explained to us how to operate our ATVs. I didn't catch all of it- I was relying on my friends. I was scared! When my vehicle shifted a little to the side, I felt like I was going to tip over. I stuck to driving on gradual inclines/downhills. One of my friends actually fell off her vehicle, so be careful! I also suggest wearing a bandanna, sunglasses, gloves, and long pants. After the two hours were up, we returned out ATVs and waited a while for the shuttle. Then we drove back to the office to return out helmets and get our deposit back. It was a great experience overall, but not one I need to do again anytime soon. read more

It started out bad. Dead stop traffic on the 101 near Salinas. You can see the gridlock as it stretched for miles with no movement. The Slumdog whipped his 7Runner (yes we squeezed 7 people in) back up north to catch 156 to cut over to bypass the 101 stretch. It was a good hour detour and we missed our 1:30appt. Rather than risk being late again, we rebooked for 3pm. When we got there, the boys club all flashed our Yelp check-in to get the $5 gas waived. I kept reading how everyone said the staff was super friendly but I didn't see it from Miss-Tattoo-chick at the counter. It may have been because it was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and she was stuck validating everyone's Yelp deal on our phones. We were offered our dusty, smelly helmets and asked to call the desk after we landed on the beach so we can get shuttled to the ATV area. Like obedient and anxious riders, we did just that. We were told to look for a white suburban but no such vehicle came in sight so we started walking down the beach towards the crowd. And we walked. And walked. After 10 minutes and feeling a bit like Tom Hanks in Castaway, we called the lady again to tell her we were still waiting. About another 10 minutes elapsed as we walked halfway to the equator and still no sign of this stinkin' white suburban. We walked up to where everyone was camping and people started ATVing around us when this 1976 BLUE pickup truck came up and told us he could take 4 of us and the suburban will quickly follow. We put our Wilson volleyball down and felt like we were finally rescued only to get dropped off after a 3 min ride. Man we almost walked that whole distance! We immediately jumped on our 250s and we got our instructions on how to operate these things. It definitely felt like a rental as it didn't have that much gusto as you gassed it. Still, we had a blast as we ventured into this surreal oasis of the sahara (ok it's Pismo but lemme escape for a sec ok?). Almost immediately, our group of 9 got separated. Everyone looks alike here! I didn't realize but my ATV didn't have a guard for foot pegs so several times my rear tire scuffed the back of my calves and it F'ing hurt like hell as the top epidermis was burned off! Make sure when you pick an ATV, to make sure yours has this guard! Lucky for us, one of the head cheese was the one who shuttled us back at the end of the day. When he asked how our day was, I told him about how we all played Tom Hanks and showed him my tire burn and he gave us a voucher for either 1hr free or 1/2 off our next visit. Honestly, this changed my 3 1/2 star review to a perfect 5 stars. I appreciate when a business really genuinely cares about the customer experience. This means they actually CARE to have you back and tell your friends about it. Finally I saw what Yelpers were talking about when they said the staff was really nice. I'm eager to do this again.
