I really enjoy visiting the larder (and tasting whatever we purchase there shortly afterward!). The cheese selection is outstanding (they introduced us to some new Spanish cheeses that we became addicted to). We are also fans of the charcuterie such as the fennel salami. They have delicious rotisserie chickens that are perfect for a quick meal during the week. For those with a sweet tooth, they also have a rotating selection of gelatos in large and single-serve containers that are absolutely delicious. I am basing this review on two sweets that were below par. In both cases you only tasted sweetness and not the lead ingredients that were featured. No taste of almonds in the almond cake and none of ginger in the ginger cookie. Just a unpleasant saccharine sweet taste. I threw out the cookie after one bite. Their rotating gelato menu has made me a full on addict. My roommate told me about this great cheese place...love cheese so I had to check it out. I got a chorizo and manchego sandwich, shrimp salad sandwich...both yummy but was it worth what I paid for? Answer is no. So back to the real reason why I went...for the cheese. I wanted a milder, creamy goat cheese and did I get it? Yes, I did! And did I get one of the most expensive goat cheese they sell? Yes I did! It's delicious and I'm happy I got it. I have to treat myself sometimes, right? As previous posts have mentioned, BKLYN Larder is pricey, but I tried the ham and gruyere sandwich, and it was tasty. The bread was beautifully crusty. The best parts were the pickle and mayo. The spicy pickle inside with mayo flavoring really pulled the sandwich together. The interior was lovely with fun products/brands that I didn't recognize, so the place is worth just dropping by just to explore. I will go here again, but I just might go broke since everything's so expensive, and I'm sadly poor because of grad school! read more

I can't say I have tried everything, but judging by the things I have tried so far I truly believe that every product in this store is absolutely delicious. I can't speak highly enough about their meat and cheese. The people who work there are also very helpful, friendly and patient. On my first visit I must have spent close to an hour picking out exactly what cheese and meat I was going to try. I ended up with two very amazing cheese choices and 1/2 pound of prosciutto. Staff delivers tiny slivers of heaven on brown wax paper for you to taste as you're deciding which one to go with. The ham & cheese sandwich was the best item of the 4, but still very salty - The prices were a bit steep - I know it's high-quality ingredients, but $35/lb for an octopus salad is just a bit ridic. The SO suggested that maybe the food isn't meant to all be eaten together since it was like a salt lick. And the fact that they so willingly offer you samples of just about everything (I tried a very smokey and complex goat cheese - cannot remember the name for the life of me but I know it was covered with ash), the fig jam (which I decided would be a great bday present for my mom) and the green beans (sage, garlic and olive oil OH MY!) that it's impossible (for someone as weak as myself) to resist! At this moment, I have consumed some green beans and the sandwich for my dinner. Although I'm starting to wonder if the sandwich was advertised incorrectly (on chalk board) or if it was made wrong. I ordered Beet Salad with Ricotta Salata and I got bitter greens. Slightly confused...delicious but was looking for the sweetness of the beets to complement the green beans. Oh well. As soon as I walked in the door the spoon went into the Ricotta. OH LORD! Now I know why I've avoided at the Flea Market. Dangerous! I've now stopped in to Larder twice: once to snag a sandwich with a friend, and once to pickup makings for a BBQ. Both times the food was fantastic, and I ended up buying things I hadn't intended. The store has an awesome selection of niche market food products, and they'll all entice you. The question is what you'll end up getting. Between the meat, cheese, bread, I'm not sure the other groceries they carry are even necessary, but they're appreciated none the less. Truly, the only downside is that the prices are pretty reprehensibly high. That being said, if that's the price to pay for high quality food in the city, then I'm down with it. The pros: the food seems of good quality here. In particular, the cheeses and the pastry. The homemade pastries are actually a good deal, relatively inexpensive and outstandingly good. The almond cake ($3) is worth the trip alone. The selection of olive oils is tasty and appreciated, the cheeses are the best I've tasted, but they are quite expensive ($25+ per pound). The staff is knowledgeable and helpful and they have a wide range of tasty items, plus educational and tasty tastings. The cons: Outrageously expensive. Now, I grew up in Park Slope, I'm used to gentrification, and I am quite comfortable with the notion that sometimes you do get what you pay for, and that it makes quite more sense to pay 30 dollars for a pound of cheese that will truly enhance your life experience than to spend it on something else (can we say "blockbuster movie plus popcorn"?). That having been said, these prices seem ruthless - why are there no hard cheeses (that I saw) for less than $20 a pound? Is everyone who shops there well ensconced in a high paying job (10% unemployment anyone?)? In this economy, in this society, there's something unpleasant about this absolute commitment to expense. My GF and I went down to Union Street, to Blue Apron, and saw the same bottle of premium olive oil (organic, 2009 vintage) that we'd seen at Larder for $40 priced at $25. Same bottle, same size. Same cool brochure explaining why we should spend a huge amount on olive oil. Now breathe deep a moment, $25 is a lot for a bottle of olive oil, no? Now think: Larder has marked it up by almost 100%. Bottom line: This is excellent food, and I truly appreciate the care and the dedication the staff show in introducing the purchaser to the finer points of cuisine. This store is an asset and worth visiting. But the markup is beyond inconvenient, it's a class statement, and I suggest the owners think that there might be worth in expanding the range of the prices to include more price-worthy options for foodies on a budget. read more

3.5 Stars We find ourselves in BKLYN Larder quite often, since it is a convenient stop in which to grab gourmet items when one hasn't the time to source the best of the borough from cheese shops and butcheries both near and far. On the other hand, we maintain a love-hate relationship for whilst it does some things well, there are a nontrivial number of items that are exceptionally overpriced, even for those of us who live to eat. Pro's: -Delicious breakfast sandwich: Cheddar & scallion frittata sandwich on a buttermilk biscuit -Good selection of cheese -Decent charcuterie collection -Friendly service -Interesting gourmet items, ranging from jams to chocolate, which one may not be able to source elsewhere, in the neighborhood, that easily -Nice bread selection Con's: -Overpriced. For example, I pay $8/pound for meatballs at Zabar's. The same items are $18/pound at BKLYN Larder. I'm not quite sure how they did the math on that one, for the quality differential is not that substantial. Sauteed kale is $15/pound. $15 for kale that has been sitting in the refrigerator for a better part of a day?! - The prepared food (the roasted chicken, for example) is not of quality that merits the exceedingly inflated prices -The pastries are lackluster -They sell gelato for ungodly sums of money where, considering Ample Hills is around the corner, is an absolute joke Conclusion: As far as delis go, BKLYN Larder has many positive selling points. The cheese and charcuterie selections are decent, and the staff are generally all too happy to assist you in your selection. That said, their prepared food is ridiculously overpriced and incredibly mediocre. While it's good for grabbing a few odds and ends for dinner when you can't be bothered to schlepp to Fleisher's (for meat) and Murray's (for cheese, of course), it isn't exceptional in any particular area. This is a place for foodies. If you care too much about what something costs more than what it tastes like, then I am not sure if this is for you. The seating area is tight-you will share space with Park Slope moms, the occasional wandering hipster, and those brave tourists that find their way into Brooklyn. What's good? The food! They have something each meal of the day. I can have some lovely toast with jam or a yummy sandwich. I especially love their almond cake-dense and moist with the subtle almond taste. Very good quality. Some of the prices are astonishingly high, and some aren't, so pay attention. The bakery case has some very good items, and they change the selections from time to time. Excellent cheeses. Good prepared foods case. A small, selection of interesting locally made packaged foods, some of which I haven't seen anywhere else, along with some non-locally-made packaged specialty foods that are somewhat more familiar, though still mostly from hard-to-find small producers. Great selection of cheeses for a store this size. Some of them are fairly priced, all things considered -- you're not in a small boutique like this for bargain hunting. But some of them are priced unreasonably high, even taking into account that this is a small non-chain store.
