It's disappointing when you visit a place often enough to notice how inconsistent the service can be. I also find it frustrating to receive different responses from staff and to have takeout packaging vary from one visit to the next. I almost always order the same thing because they truly have the best taco salad. When I order it to go, I always request extra salsa and sour cream. However, the experience seems to vary each time--sometimes I receive pico de gallo, sometimes salsa, and sometimes neither of the items I asked for. I've also noticed that ordering late in the evening usually goes smoothly. The morning, afternoon, and early evening shifts seem to be where the experience is less consistent. At times, I hesitate before placing an order because I wonder whether it will be worth dealing with missing items again. It may seem like a small issue, but when it happens repeatedly, it becomes frustrating. Consistency matters, especially for loyal customers. I hope management can address these issues so every guest receives the same level of service, regardless of the time of day. On this particular night, Rogelio was very helpful in assisting the new cashier/server, Sydney. I also appreciate Sophie, who stepped in towards the end and helped keep things running smoothly. I ordered a BLT and it had to be the worst BLT of my life. 1 slice of tomato, 1 soggy piece of lettuce, and 1 small piece of bacon. I also asked for my bread not to be toasted, one half of my sandwich was toasted while on the other half the top piece was toasted and the other wasn't. I didnt ask for anything extra except the toasted bread part yet half of my sandwich didn't have any mayo and the other half had a quarter of the bread covered with barely any mayo. Now the potatoes. The aesthetic spin walking into the black bear diner was amazing. There is a water fall with the classic black bears running around it. We were greeted and seated immediately. The server was so nice and punctual. The table was clean and the menu has all the yummy faves that you could want! I ordered the biscuits and gravy with egg and bacon. The husband ordered the big bear burger! Everything tasted fresh, crisp and delicious. Kudos to the cooks and all the staff for providing a great experience. Ordered a pot pie, was so uniformed like a frozen Walmart pot pie, at an insane price. I asked the waitress if the pie was pre made, she told me no, we make them fresh . There were 5 other tables that were taken care of before ours, even though we sat down before all 5 of those tables. So our order took a total of an hour and half to get. We have been to multiple Big Bear Diner locations in several cities over the years and the service and food have always been consistent. Why, or how, this place would be any different is beyond me, but it is. The food was DRENCHED in oil. The eggs, the potatoes, all of it. It was all slippery and disgusting. It's hard to mess up huevos rancheros, but they managed to do that as well. On top of that, the service was minimal. It took a while for the waitress to even acknowledge us, let alone take our order. These types of reviews are hard ones for me. A one-star is well deserved. They really screwed something up and deserve a one-star. Three through five stars are also relatively easy for me to judge, but a two is a tough one to give. With that said, I have been here twice in the last month. Once for breakfast and the home fries were cold. Not completely cold, but they were just warm, and the rest of the meal was ok. We were there today with a group of six, and our waiter Travis was on top of it. That is where the positive comments stop. My friend had fish and chips and I had scrambled eggs and a side of grits . My friends fish and chips were good, but my scrambled eggs looked like a omelet that went rogue , they literally looked like the cook had started an omelet and didnt need it so he gave it to me they looked like he cooked them on one side and chopped them up with a spatula , they were hard and way over cooked needless to say I left 3/4ths of them on the plate. Due to work I find myself in Fernley on an occasion. Fernley has a few decent lunch spots and a couple others I would like to try but just haven't had the chance due to covid. Due to that my colleagues and I tend to find ourself at the steady and consistent Black Bear Diner. We always know exactly what we are going order and we consistently get good food and service. Over the summer/fall we always requested to sit outside and Anthony (lunch server) was always more than accommodating. Now with it getting cooler we don't ask. I am a fan of breakfast at anytime of the day so my go to is their Denver Omelette with bacon and Jalapeños added, sourdough toast, and country potatoes. I normally need a nap afterwards but it's well worth it! For the price, quality of food and most importantly quality of service I will continue to come back! read more

My partner and I had the prime rib dinner last night and it was really delicious. I love that they have sweet potato fries on their side list too. Today being Thanksgiving and I had no desire to cook, we decided to try out Black Bear Diner. We were alittle unsure cause of the "3-star" rating but I'm so glad we didn't let that sway our minds cause I literally have nothing negative about our experience there. Every staff member we encountered was very friendly and attentive to our needs. Everyone was wearing a mask and following their COVID procedures. The restrooms were clean and well maintained. Our food came out quickly and was delicious! I had the New York Steak sandwich and my husband had the Hobo omelette with pancake. The steak was fully cooked and the bread was so fresh and soft! Holy Moly...attn to the cooks-lay off the salt!!!!! We went for breakfast and didn't realize I was ordering a salt lick! Myself and the kids were almost sick to our stomachs with the amount of salt in the entire meal. My son and I mixed our eggs in with the potatoes in hopes that it would tone down the salt but that didn't even help. Tsk tsk. Please let the customers salt their own food if they desire to. Saturday morning breakfast while heading back to Reno from Fallon this morning. Very easy access in Fernley. Today there were a few people though with our recent covid19 mandates, seems like it was less crowded than usual, but everyone was masked up and the appropriate precautions were made. I like Black Bear Diner. A restaurant chain from California, their meals are consistently large and tasty and you know what you're going to get when you visit any one of their restaurants. I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs. Ate half, brought the rest home for another meal. My son had chicken strips, as we were in that between time of breakfast and lunch though these meals are served anytime. The wait staff were busy. I think that with the strain that covid19 is putting on businesses, maybe this restaurant was not staffed as well as it could be. The adjoining casino looked empty though we did not go into the casino this time around. It could be a nice choice to dine and play and avoid crowds if need be. read more

This is our second year making BBD our spot for Christmas morning breakfast. We have visited in other occasions as well and overall has been a good experience... I would give the restaurant an overall of 4 stars but special occasions such as thanksgiving and Christmas experiences would bring it to 3 stars. While I understand thanksgiving and Christmas are one of those days you will be lucky to actually find any place open and with all the shortage of people who want to work I can see how things may be affected here and there. In this occasion I ordered orange juice, only because in the menu it is explicitly state it is natural juice and not from concentrated. Well, after tasting it, It is from concentrated and the waitress confirmed and stated it was because they had ran out of oranges. She took it back and off the check but still a little disappointing. The menu for Christmas morning was limited and "special" so I didn't get to have a breakfast option. I had a burger with red potatoes and it was good. Service was good and pleasant. Okay listen I went here for breakfast the only thing that I found really really good was the coffee to be honest with you some of my food was cold and the other parts were extremely greasy. I also don't think that they changed the grease every night the oil tasted really bad on the food I ate it because I try not to be too rude but the food was a really greasy and some of it was cold I don't think I'll be going back but it was worth a try. This was an adorable little diner just like the ones I love in California. But unfortunately their food was not impressive at all. Our food was not hot, the breakfast we ordered cooked softly came out with hard bacon, burnt hasbrowns and the biscuit was burnt on the bottom. The gravy was cold. The ribs were burnt and dried out and the they re fried the fries to heat them up instead of making them fresh so they were too hard to eat. The waitress was polite and friendly and she tried her best. The manager had terrible customer service let's you speak but does not care how you feel. We would not recommend eating here. We paid a lot of money to take my boyfriends kids to eat and then we left hungry and has to take them somewhere else. This is not acceptable in the service industry.
