I have been going to this Black Bear location, with my husband Gary, for years and have seen many different managers and waitstaff come and go. I do want to give a shout out to a few who work together making Black Bear function well. Tiffany, Cindy Ray, the ever enthusiastic Walter, and Sonia. But for the last 15 years, one person who has always shown up and stayed working here is our favorite, Heather. Recently we had a question about which days she works and was told that she was cut to 3 days a week, the reason? She does not have enough reviews. WHAT?? I was more than willing to do a review, I am a Realtor, I get why reviews are important. However, Heather is there working, not randomly calling out on scheduled days, and management can see that her customers love her and request her, what better review is that? It is nice to be recognized and Gary does not even have to order; she knows what he wants (with extra syrup and butter). I always change my food order, but once seated, our drinks are automatically delivered to the table right away, with oranges for my iced tea. As for the food, the bacon is exceptional and no matter what I order, I add bacon. We are usually there for breakfast, but for the occasional dinner, I have discovered the most amazing meatloaf. They actually slice and grill it. But back to Heather... and consider this a review from many people as a great number of my family members go to Black Bear as well; you need to get back on track and appreciate a valuable asset to your team. Haven't yet been disappointed with this diner. Always great food and great service. I had 1of each homemade sausage patties-mild and spicy. The spicy is very flavorful and then the mild seems blah in comparison, love made from scratch stuff. Definitely great food. This is traditionally the place I stop at for breakfast if I fly into Phoenix in the morning. The parking situation is good and the restaurant is centrally located to the northern/western burbs on Bell Ave. The food is delicious and well made, and the service has always been efficient and friendly. Additionally, this is one of just a handful of places that offers pineapple juice on the menu. Even with a full waiting area, I've never waited more than 10 minutes to be seated. My go-to is the French toast and it's everything French toast should be....flavorful, soft inside, and slightly crunchy around the edges. Add a little butter and maple syrup....heaven! I was getting my oil change nearby so decided to stop here for breakfast while I wait for my car. It was crowded for a Monday since it was a holiday. I was seated within 10 minutes. The waitress was slow in her service because it was busy. I ordered a typical breakfast, which was bread, pudding French toast, which was OK. We visited on a Sunday morning and experienced a long wait--about 45 minutes, even though the hostess originally told us 20. It was a busy time, with many other guests also waiting for tables, so the delay was understandable but still. Once we were seated, we placed our order right away, but the food took over 20 minutes to arrive. On the plus side, our server was friendly and attentive throughout the visit. I ordered the chicken tenders with buffalo sauce. Unfortunately, they were quite dry and lacked enough sauce to add flavor. The fries were also disappointing--soft instead of crispy. Overall, the service was pleasant, but the food and wait times didn't quite meet expectations. Might be worth trying again at a less busy time. Delicious mimosas! I got the flight with huckleberry and mango. Wonderful! We went with a person who is gluten sensitive. The server was knowledgeable about the menu and helped with finding delicious choices that were gluten friendly. It always seems to be busy in these diners and you can see why. A quick dinner out with the fam after a long day. We decided to get something yummy at Black Bear Diner. I ordered the loaded baked potatoe. It was so good!!! It had large pieces of fresh grilled chunky bacon and shredded cheddar cheese. I added butter and sour cream and it was perfection!! We ordered a side of onion rings that came with ranch dip and we requested a side of the BBQ sauce. Yum! This is definitely a shareable. Good size. Before we left we took home a fresh made chocolate milk mini pie. So fresh and tasty. Our server was very nice and he made sure we had everything we needed. This is a nice location with a cute store and plenty of fresh baked goods. Parking is easy. There is a big lot. If you have not ever been to a Black Bear Diner you are in for a treat. Had a party of 14 for my daughter's birthday on March 1st. Put my name in at 11am on a Sunday. They said a 1 hour wait and we were seated at 12:10 :) ALEX was our server and he did AMAZING! We were not waiting for anything- he was timely, kind and organized. All the food came out correctly and everyone seemed to enjoy their food. It has been a long time since I have eaten at a Black Bear Diner...It will be along time before I ever do it again. First, it was over 10 minutes from the time I was seated before I saw a waitress. I ordered 2 eggs over easy, sausage links, and biscuits with gravy, plus a hot tea to drink. Loooong wait klater I got my platter of food. The eg whites were still runny and the eggs were luke warm at best. Teh biscuits wee large, and cold with not enough gravy to cover them and the gravy was not hot, not even warm! The sausage links were good...but just barely on the warm side. I do not think a health department inspector would ahve let them serve this brekfast due to the low tmeperatures on everything. Lastly the waitress seemed to get lost again after bringing me the cold plate of food. When I was "done" I pushed the plate to the edge of the table and waited...and waited...and waited. A passing bus boy grabbed the plate, and I waited. It was probably 15 minutes before the waitress brought the bill. If I have to say something good...they serve real honey with the tea. read more

I didn't want to cook last night and had been craving a chicken-fried steak. So my husband and I ordered pickup online through Black Bear. I ordered a chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and country gravy with a slice of cheesecake with strawberries. He ordered meatloaf, side salad, and onion rings. I should have stayed home and cooked; it tasted worse than a frozen Tyson chicken-fried. The mashed potatoes had no flavor. There was enough gravy to see that there was gravy, and I got gross broccoli instead of corn. (Which is all they advertised to choose online.) I was neither happy nor satisfied. Hubs said the meatloaf was gross, especially after he showed me, and it was full of carrots. Not sure about you, but I've never had carrots in a meatloaf. His salad was good, but he only got one ranch dressing, so he had none for his onion rings. He also mentioned that the onion rings were soggy and not crisp. ( No other condiments, napkins, or utensils.) Two stars just because their dessert was fantastic. Cheesecakes were good, thick with a gingerbread-tasting crunch. Strawberries were on the side and I was thankful for that, cause they were no longer fresh. Hubs ordered the berry cobbler, but when he went in, they were out and substituted it with an apple one. He said it was really good and he couldn't finish it. This is our neighborhood black bear, but I can't fathom spending $50.00 on dinner and it being as untasteful as it was. We stood there for a good 10 minutes and nothing...no greeting, the young lady who was ringing up a customer never even looked up!! I'm not much of a fan of chains, but this place is pretty decent. I came in here for breakfast while I was waiting 4 hours for tires at Big-O.‍ I had the Tri-tip Benedict Biscuit. Very tasty and a nice, a big portion. I like that the tables are spread apart and there are partial partitions between the booths. It makes a little more private and quiet. I am so sad to say that I will not be going back to Black Bear Diner. They have changed their menu. I used to love their huge, thick, fluffy pancakes with fruit("Red, White, and Blue). No longer offered. My pancakes today were flat, tasteless, and small. The service was poor, although the server was sweet and very apologetic ( I left her a nearly % 40 tip) I gently shared my experience with the manager and he couldn't care less. It was the best server, it was the worst server. I ordered the Patty Melt and asked the server to make sure that there weren't any raw onions. I received a Patty Melt without any onions. The result was a dry hamburger with cheese. Very disappointed. The others in our party enjoyed their meal. One ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and string. Beans. It was like good old fashioned meatloaf and was enjoyed. Our other diner ordered the tri tip dip with crispy fries. I tasted them. It was crispier than normal, but not as crispy as I would like. The diner has an interesting decor and they make you feel like being home. I would say that the meal was enjoyed by most. We've been sitting here for well over an hour and no food. People on both sides of us have gotten food and finished it and we still have nothing. Server came 20 minutes ago and said it would be 1-2 minutes. Then 5 minutes ago said there was an issue with our order and the manager is on it. Food came out an hour and half after being seated. The food we ordered was just blah and the presentation of amount of food was very disappointed, and the prices are so high. I ordered a sandwich, and asked not to put butter on bun, when I received sandwich, it was shiny and I swiped my fingers and grease on my fingers. I asked the waitress to find out if they put butter, and she came back and said the cook told her in making the sandwich, the cook had greasy gloves, and that is what was on the gloves. OMG!!!
