Food is good BUT they'll charge you extra for what's listed on the menu for that meal. I ordered Chicken Fried steak SMOTHERED in gravy, it came with only half of the steak with gravy. I mentioned this to the server he said so you want the steak smothered with gravy, I said I want what your menu states. So he charged me an additional $1.49 for a small bowl of gravy. The female manager with nose rings stood by the up charge and didn't care what the menu stated. They eventually took it off but informed me when/if we come again there will be a up charge. I informed her she must have missed the class on customer service. Don't rip off the customers when you won't stand by your own menu items. Food is usually good, but the fish fry has been almost a joke. They take forever to refill the fish if they even do it. Please don't call it unlimited when it's not. Quickest way to get poor service i to order the unlimited fish fry because I think they avoid the table after that. Was one of the places I really liked to go but the last few times this was our experience as I went with a friend that likes the fish a lot. We stopped here for a late breakfast this morning and found everything to be very tasty and overwhelming in portion size. The three of us had enough extra food for another meal. The meats are all made in house and have a nice flavor. The pancakes were fluffy and the Grits yummy and Eggs made to order and not runny. Nice! We spent about $15 per person plus tip. So if you want something above average and slightly different, then skip older same ol', same ol' chains and come here - if only for the old Jukebox and stuffed bears. read more

As a long time Black Bear Diner customer, this is the first time I have had a negative experience at the diner. As a family of four, we chose the Black Bear Diner for dinner last evening. While most of our entrees were excellent, the St Louis style BBQ Pork ribs were unfortunately a disaster! Rather than falling apart off the bone, they resembled beef jerky. I'm not kidding! I should have taken a picture, but didn't think of it at the moment. I brought it to the attention of the waitress and requested a refund for the meal. She was very polite and said she would speak to the manager. She returned and said that the manager would take half off the $19.95 dinner and would comp the bread pudding dessert. I felt that was fair and dessert was absolutely delicious. Based on our experience, I would highly recommend the Black Bear Dinner, but pass on the BBQ ribs. read more

We had not been to Black Bear Diner before but I had a free birthday breakfast and we decided to try it out. We went on a Saturday morning and there was a 50 minute wait. We left to do some shopping and they text us when our table was almost ready. Once we were text we headed back over and we're seated as soon as we walked in. The place is clean and the server we had was super friendly. She came right over and got our drink and food orders. The food was out within 20 minutes or so and the plates are HUGE. I got the Bears choice with 2 eggs, bacon and their sweet cream pancakes. Hubs got their original ScramBOWL. The eggs and bacon were cooked perfectly and the sweet cream pancakes were so fluffy and good! Hubs really enjoyed the scrambowl and said everything was cooked perfectly. I tasted it and everything was fresh. The potatoes at the bottom were so good! Overall, we came in the door for the free birthday breakfast but they got us hooked! Okay . . . Okay . . . I'm back for another Free birthday Breakfast Last time was the "Over Easy" episode. But first our waitress, didn't give us silverware until we asked for it. Then we had to return the dirty silverware for clean ones. And believe me. The experience with our delightful waitress was the best part. But I digress. Back to the eggs. So, realizing I didn't want to repeat the upside down episode, I ordered my eggs Sunny Side up. Now I've been around the block a few times. This isn't my first rodeo. I know what Sunny Side is. I've had them before. But this? I had to perform a C-Section in order to get to the yoke. I may as well have had them raw. Now if you cannot make eggs properly, then maybe you should try out another business. There is no way that customers want snot driven gelatinous membranes for eggs. If this is what you are putting out, upside down eggs and raw sunny side style eggs, then please step aside and let people who have pride take over. Food is always here, but the service hit or miss. No consistency ever. Arrived around 1:35pm Sunday. It's Fathers Day so we expect some waiting. Looked over the menu while waiting so we would be ready when seated. 25 minutes later we're seated and give our order to our waitress. 1 hour later, still no food and only seen the waitress twice. 70 % of the restaurant is now vacant. We decided to ask for our order changed to takeout. Still had to wait an additional 10 minutes. My boyfriend and I ate lunch at your Glendale AZ location on July 9, 2025. He had a cheeseburger, and I had a club sandwich. He said his was good. But my bread on my sandwich was burnt beyond recognition. The waitress did ask if I wanted a new one. But I said no. She said that their toaster was temperamental. I owned a diner for 6 years and I never sent burnt toast out to anyone. It was my mistake not to show it to the manager. I just wanted you to be aware of this. I read your comments on the table. Our extended families like this place because they can seat a group of six and give good service. There can be good days and bad, but more often good service. We all enjoy their huge over the top servings of breakfast. Bring your appetite. I like their two egg combo with either chicken fried steak or corned beef hash. I ordered the Christmas Holiday dinner to go for me and two other guests. The website was lacking on how to preorder but finally figured it out after a couple of calls. The confirmation listed each item but didn't mention the corn muffins or stuffing. Had to call back and was assured everything would be included. Unfortunately, they forgot the corn muffins in my order, and it wasn't worth it to go back to the restaurant. I was very disappointed in the ham and the stuffing as they were both dry (especially the ham). The pumpkin pie was pictured with whipped cream but there wasn't any. At $25.99 for each dinner, I definitely expected a lot more. I will not use this restaurant again for any holiday meal and will think twice before dining there in the future. read more

Your email states to go in and pick up when you order online. Its extremely RUDE to tell PAYING CUSTOMERS they have to wait outside to pick up their food because its a holiday. Then to have the "manager" named Amanda (who I see by other reviews is always rude and obviously needs to be fired) hang up on you when you call to complain about rude service is next level. She needs to learn customer service. It doesn't matter if it was 1 minute or 5, you don't kick your customers out of the building. The order was WRONG to boot. Such a pleasant experience. Around 4 pm on Friday, June 13th, 2025, 10 others and I who were attending a conference in Glendale, AZ came to BBD for dessert. Long story short, one-third of the way through enjoying it, I found a long blond hair in my cobbler. It happened that our server--who was gracious throughout her service to us--was at our table serving the last items from our order. I exclaimed, "Excuse me, but is this a hair?! I think this is a hair." She replied that it couldn't be, because all the cooks were men with short, dark hair. Nevertheless, after looking at it closely (and after getting verification from the person seated to my right that there did indeed appear to be a long, blond hair baked into the cobbler), our waitress removed the dish, saying as she did that she would send the manager over to speak with me. Several minutes later our waitress returned to the table and said to me, "We apologize for that. There will be no change for that dessert. Would you like to order something else?" I replied, "No thank you." I had not exclaimed loudly when I discovered the hair, nor did I make a big fuss when asking the waitress about it, so most others at the table continued eating undisturbed--while I worked to quiet my stomach. I did ponder all that had happened, especially noting that despite what the waitress had said, the manager did not come to our table to make sure all was well, nor to extend the apologies of the establishment for tainted food having been served. Just before the waitress brought the bill, it occurred to me that it would be a courtesy for Black Bear to deduct a portion from the bill equal to the value of the dessert as a token apology for the distress I'd experienced. I went to the manager and courteously asked if he would be willing to do that. He raised his voice to me, and said, "NO! Doing that would make it look like we had done it on purpose!" I said, (quietly) "Well, actually, I think it would make it look like you care about your patron's experience, and would show your establishment in a more favorable light since 'good news makes the paper, but bad news is repeated a thousand times.'" The manager then said, "Don't worry. I'll handle it." I said, "Do I understand you to mean that you will not only not charge for the tainted dessert, but also deduct from it a portion of the bill equal to the value of the dessert?" The manager turned away from me saying, "No. We are not going to do that!!" Just then, I looked up to see that my host was bringing the bill over to pay. I ended the conversation with the manager and returned to join the rest of our party, who were preparing to leave the table. Friends, I don't know which was more distressing to me that day: the discourteous conduct of the manager, or that I was served food with a hair in it! I'd like to know which of these painful events you feel most distressed about? I want to let you know that days later, when I returned to Tucson and called up "my local" BBD's manager, he was helpful, courteous, and informative, telling me the best way I could communicate my concerns to you. (That's the kind of service BBD is noted for and which I have come to expect from my visits to your Tucson establishment.) We've been coming to this location of BBD off and on for the better part of 13 years. When we first moved nearby we frequented the diner as the food was great and the service was excellent. Over the years it has both degraded, with the service hit or miss, either excellent or mediocre. We stopped coming as much since the service was just not predictable. In early June we stopped in around an hour before closing after an exhausting day. Wife wanted corned beef hash but they were out, so we decided to share a vegetarian omelette and the reuben sandwich. The food took almost 30 minutes even though the dining room was pretty much empty, and the reuben was just dry, hard, and after eating half of it, realized it was missing the sauerkraut and any semblance of thousand island dressing (see pics). I was exhausted and they were getting ready to close so I figured I'd just contact the corporate office, but I tried but never heard back. Blackberry cobbler...looks yummy, right??? WRONG!!! We had a bad experience with a Black Bear Diner in California a few months ago, but decided to give it a try again since we just got to Phoenix and it was the only place open at 9pm that we knew would have pie (otherwise we would have gone to Mimi's Cafe, Cracker Barrel or Village Inn). WRONG!! Never again! Fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice, shame on me! Last time they had no idea what a Hot Turkey Sandwich was (they served me a heated turkey sandwich with fries instead of the mashed potato, gravy, bread and turkey open face kind). Neither the waitress nor the cook knew what was on THEIR menu!! This time...right on their menu were cute little bears holding up signs, each listing a different dessert specialty. I was excited to see the "Blackberry Cobbler" as that is what we had been craving on our three hour trip up from Tombstone. So we ordered them and excitedly took our first bites... WHAT IS THIS??? Cherry??? Not what we were expecting. So we put our spoons aside and asked if we could have the blackberry...but NOOOOO...they don't make blackberry any more. WHAT????? It's on the menu??!! The waitress says they've never had blackberry since she's worked there, but it's on the menu I say, oh...we're getting new menus she says - but that it's a mixed berry cobbler with berries and cherries. So on that, Walt says he'll keep his, even though he isn't thrilled and I exchange mine for a Coconut Cream one. It ends up there are NO BERRIES in Walt's pie, only cherries and not even good ones at that. My pie was two inches of cream and less than an inch of coconut filling.
