On 8-17-2026 (Monday) I was on my way home from the Modesto area and got an immediate urge to eat at Black Bear Diner. When I walked into the restaurant, it was 7:59 pm. They were closing in 1 minute. The waitress said she had to ask the kitchen staff if they were still open. She came back at the same time another waitress came back. They informed me they were no longer open for dine-in. I started begging them that technically they were still open, while I would completely understand if they were to reject me. About that time, a person, later identified as Jesus C., (Manager) approached me. I again told him I knew what I wanted and promised to order and eat right away. He had no problem with that and seated me. I expressed my heartfelt thanks for his service to his customers. I immediately ordered the meatloaf dinner and a drink, which is what I was in the mood for. Anyway, long story short was that the food was great and the service was fantastic. I actually thought there was no way they would feed me, but due to a customer minded Manager, they did. One of my best experiences at a restaurant. I love BBD for breakfast or dinner. The portion size of all meals is very stisfactory and the quality of food, the same. Great experience. Of course, I will continue to patronize BBD anytime I'm passing through the area and need a meal. I just wish there was a BBD in Stockton. In looking at my receipt, it reads that I ordered at 8:01 PM and I paid and left at 8:15 pm. I ate as fast as I could because they were so generous to let me dine in at closing. read more

We spent the better part of last week in Manteca. We had a late night with the kids and decided to sleep through our breakfast buffet add on at our hotel. We didn't want to venture too far, but my kids still wanted pancake breakfast when we got up and saw this Black Bear was a 10 minute drive. My family and I popped in last Thursday for brunch. Maria checked us in, seated us in a corner booth and took our order. The dining room was well kept and it was quieter in the restaurant. We knew what we wanted and everything was served hot and was delicious. We appreciated the fast service although, we were in no rush. We were on vacation and very much in vacation mode. I can't believe I have never been to Black Bear Diner until now because I absolutely love this place! Plus the service was amazing! I got the Hungry Bear combo Steak and eggs and boy was I in for a surprise. I barely finished it because the portions here are astronomical! They're huge! I got 3 eggs sunny side up, 2 huge biscuits, and a side of potatoes. The steak was cooked medium rare and was super soft and tender. The biscuits were like pillows. They're oh so soft and fluffy on the inside yet very dense. Absolutely love. The potatoes were nicely seasoned as well. I love this place and as a breakfast/brunch food fan, I think I just have a new go to spot! Our waiter was super nice and patient as well in helping us with our order. Late Saturday afternoon went for an early dinner to the Manteca location. Girlfriend ordered a Parmesan burger, and a pond taking one bite bit down on something hard. Remove it from her mouth and it turned out to be a quarter inch jagged piece of a broken dish. Look like a shark tooth. Brought to the staff's attention and the manager who seemed indifferent, and said do you want us to make you another one? To which they did and then removed one milkshake off of our bill. Had she ate it it could have been catastrophic injury to her mouth or even worse. Not acceptable. read more

This place is great I've only been in here for breakfast but I came in here the other day and got the fish and chips deal which was amazing. This place is always clean and the service is always great. I definitely will be back for the fish and chips deal and some breakfast. Unfortunately, our experience was not very family-friendly. The booths did not accommodate a car seat well, which made seating difficult with an infant. What concerned me most was the lack of privacy at the baby changing station. While changing my baby, another child repeatedly looked into the changing area, and I had to personally ask him to stop. During diaper changes, infants are exposed, and there should be more consideration and privacy for babies and families. The food was okay, but unfortunately I did experience a mild stomach ache afterward. Overall, due to the seating challenges, lack of privacy, and overall experience, I would not choose to visit again. read more

California really needs more diner style restaurants and Black Bear Diner definitely is helping keep diners alive. It's not my favorite restaurant chain in the world, but its the job done. It obviously appeals to a lot of people because during breakfast hours on the weekend it gets packed in this Manteca location. As soon as you pull up to the front of this restaurant you're greeted with their bear sculptures in front and really sets it apart from any other diner. Service is pretty good and attentive. My table got seated pretty quickly. You get the home type of feel when you're here and it definitely feels old fashioned. I also enjoy their bottomless coffees and their Black Bear cups. In my recent visit I ordered the Corned Beef Hash ($14.99) with pancakes on the side. I ordered over easy eggs, but I ended up with sunny side up eggs and the surface is a little runny which is why I wanted over easy. The hash browns are also notoriously not great and I personally was not a fan. I had to douse them with salt, pepper, and ketchup. The corn beef was filling, but didn't have a ton of flavor. It was pretty moist even though I thought it looked a little dry. I loved the pancake though and it was really filling while also really soft. It has a fluffy texture and it really hits the spot with a cup of black coffee. Their food is average to me, but I still like the ambiance of coming here and the service is great. My family has an obsession with coming here so I end up here from time to time and its a decent restaurant overall. read more

Came here today for dinner. We arrived around 5pm to beat the dinner rush but there was hardly anyone there. The boyfriend and I ended up ordering the same meal but with different sides. We both got the New York steak. My boyfriend got his steak with the baked potato and fresh vegetables. I got mine with garlic parmesan toast and mashed potatoes without the gravy. Our dishes also came with a choice of soup, salad or a cup of chili. We both opted for the chili. This was so good. It came with a cornbread muffin and crackers. We really enjoyed our food and ended up having a food coma by the time we got home. We also enjoyed the raspberry iced tea. This drink was not so sweet and tasted refreshing. Overall, food was great! They give you huge portions of just ok food. The food isn't bad at all but it's not great either. For about $15 a person you can easily get enough food to fill you up! The pies are good if you like cream pies! I would recommend coming as it is a good value. More memo options with less carbs would be a great addition almost every meal option is loaded with carbs and calories. Went in Christmas Day to try their Prime Rib special. It comes with a side salad or soup green beans mash potatoes and corn bread. Also a slice of pumpkin pie. My wife and I both chose side salads. About 2 minutes of receiving or side salad the main course showed up. No time to enjoy the salad. Prime Rib, cooked to the point of having the texture of leather. Very dry. The sides were ok but not fabulous. So, with being what felt like we were being rushed threw or meal and the meal that was that good we are done with Black Bear Dinner. Very disappointed. Food was 2 stars, don't know how you can mess up on breakfast but my breakfast was partially inedible with raw hash browns, runny eggs and limp bacon. Added an extra star because even though it was busy, the service was good. We were seated right away and our orders were taken promptly. Waitress was helpful with our orders and all the special requests were done. My tip is don't go on a Sunday morning because they're obviously pushing out the food very quickly. You can pre-make things like bacon but you need to place it on the flat top for a minute to re-crisp it. read more
