We came here for Dessert while we charged our car behind the diner. Totally worth the stop. Their staff is very friendly and attentive, at least the girls that took care of us were very courteous & polite. We got their Brownie a la mode, let me tell ya.... it was GIGANTIC! And very yummy for $6 bucks, worth it! Love the fact that this is their very first BBD, a corky fun stop for us ;) Downside, the bathroom was not the best, kinda dingy, but I guess is the standard for a diner bathroom. Fun Fact: did you know that this location was the very first Black Bear diner EVER? Well, now you do!! We came here after camping at Lake Siskiyou. It was a 10 minute drive from the campsite and when we arrived, it was packed! We had a group of 14 so our wait was over 40 minutes but we had a few people in our bunch that love this diner and wanted to eat at the flagship location. Considering it was Sunday, it was lunchtime, and everyone was probably leaving to drive back to reality, the wait didn't seem too bad. The service was quick and the portions were really good. The country fried steak was yummy- I like how the breading was really crispy and flavorful but the inside was still nice and soft. The potatoes were a little too soft but the flavor was there. So, I would say this is comparable to Denny's. The food was pretty mediocre, not sure how you can make breakfast go so wrong. If I had to guess, they pre-cook everything and then recook/reheat the food when ordered. The wait staff didn't seem to be happy to be there either. No surprise there was plenty of parking and the only wait for a table was because the tables needed to be cleaned. Stopped in after staying in McCloud. Phenomenal breakfast and wonderful service. We chose to sit in the adorable wooden counter stools rather than a booth. The newspaper menu has more than just food. You'll find stories and fun facts about the diner that was pleasurable to read while our food cooked. We had the Chicken Fried Steak that came with gravy, 2 eggs, potatoes and the biggest biscuit I've ever seen in my life. Sooo fluffy and buttery! I wouldn't skip it. We also tried the "Bear's Choice Breakfast" that came with 2 eggs, a protein and a treat. Endless choices to mix and match. I love being able to get something I can put syrup on as a sugary part of our savory breakfast. Everything was delicious. I wished we were in the area just to try dinner because the menu had it all. A kitchen worker came out to the counter and had a toasted sandwich that looked incredible. Guess we'll just have to come back! The only reason for the 4-star is because the bathroom was very gross. Breakfast was great! We had a party of 6 and everyone was pleased. Great selection too.

We actually came here two days in a row. First Saturday around 8am and second Sunday around 10am. Saturday for breakfast the restaurant was quite busy but we got a table quickly. Sunday the restaurant was much calmer. The food we ordered was a great serving -at least two people could eat from one meal-and everything was freshly made. The corned beef hash was great and not too salty. The chicken fried steak was well cooked and not dry. The star of the visits was the biscuit. Perfectly cooked and huge. We had the same server both days and she was friendly but since Sunday was a little more relaxed, she was also more personable. Actually enjoyed both meals at This: the very first black bear opened. We have been to this location several times and it has been great. It is a traditional stop on our trip between Portland and LA. Today was much different. We actually received no service. We got drinks and then nobody came back. After almost 30 minutes we just left. They said they would not charge us for the drinks, but that was little consolation. Came here during a recent roadtrip while driving through Mt Shasta. Had to visit the original store. Found that they have a special for prime rib dinners on Friday and Saturdays. Asked for end cut as they are usually more flavorful. Price was very reasonable. When it arrived, there were several pieces that looked like kind of dried out steak. There is no hostess station so checking in is difficult. I saw the iPad laying on the counter and asked a server flying by and she held up her syrups and said "we'll be right with you" with that "look how busy I am" sarcastic voice. It seems who ever has time might tend to the guest list. But don't ask them anything because they're too busy. Our waitress, although obviously a pro was literally five bombing is. She would swoop in, take order then run. When food came (eventually) she swooped in and dropped it like they were bombs and she was gone. Had to wait 2 trips before I finally said "hold on" and was able to ask for Tabasco sauce, which they no longer carry. Now it's all Chipotle based hot sauce which is Black Bear branded. Not good. I don't care for Chipotle peppers and that all they have. Even the Habanero sauce smells and tastes like Chipotle. Every year I go back to this black bear thinking "This year it's going to be better" but it never is. Being what I would consider the "Flagship Store" I would think they would manage it better and ensure it keeps the original aire that made them popular. I suspect the Papa and Sugar Bear have long since walked away from their empire having made their money. I don't think I'll be going back to this one anytime soon. The franchised stores seem to be a bit better. The only reason I gave this rating a 2 is because the food is still "ok". Although it sure would be nice if their hashbrowns were consistent. Some are wide cut (which I don't like as much as the traditional thin cut) my wife got the thin cut and I got the wide cut even though we both ordered "a side of hashbrowns". Oh well, never meet your heroes. My Shasta Black Bear used to be my hero. Sad they have let this one get so bad. read more

Made a stop here on the way to the Gorge and it was such a lovely surprise! It was so great that we also stopped here on our way back from the Gorge! I've seen black bear diner around but never had a chance to eat here. This just so happened to be the first location ever opened and it's just so cute inside!! The service was quick and they were good and attentive. They came to check on us and even refilled our drinks a few times. The food honestly surprised me. My favorite was the chicken fried steak, cornbread, and chili!! The mashed potatoes were also really good with the gravy! The cornbread was so soft and was perfect with the butter (or a lil chili). Most of the things we ordered were good deals from the weeknight diner deals menu. We added the soup or salad and cornbread to all those meals and we were so happy we did. typical great variety for an old fashioned flavored coffee shop. I felt welcomed by the wait staff the moment I sat my fat rear end down. I desperately needed a glass of water and it was quickly brought to me. Great service and good tasting food served. Our money was not wasted at all. Every time we are not sure what restaurant to choose for lunch, breakfast or dinner. BB is always a good choice. After all life as a tourist is great fun. Weekend tourism is always the way to go. I would say that 11.99 for steak and eggs is the best price I've ever seen in forever.I originally wanted blueberry pancakes but the server said there was steak and eggs for only 11.99. Also they came with the pancakes and hashbrowns which is crazy. The only problem was the on the gravy for the biscuits and gravy, I would add more flavor it was a little bland. I don't write reviews very often, but while having dinner there recently, I was so impressed with what an attentive and hard working waitress she was, I knew I needed to write one. She was working numerous tables including the bar area, and bussing tables at the same time. She knew quite a few of the local customers and watching her rapport with them was nice to witness. Her kindness towards all of her customers is just something you don't experience anymore. The OG Black Bear is a landmark in DTMS. The food is of reliable quality and fairly priced, which is rare in Mount Shasta. Servers have always been friendly and professional. The place has the same cabin/bear decor as others and the views are great. It does get busy with tourists on weekends and holidays. read more

Being back in Mount Shasta we just had to return to The Original Black Bear. We came here for dinner on a Wednesday night and the place was hopping! Perhaps a little too much, as there were way more people waiting than room, so we spilled out in all different directions looking for a little space. The wait was a good 30 minutes, something we really didn't expect. Finally we were seated in a nice booth and could enjoy our dinner. Our server was friendly and attentive, providing good tips on the menu choices. We had some Huckleberry lemonade while we waited, different and tasty. For our meal, I had the turkey dinner: turkey, mashed potatoes and vegetables covered in gravy along with a small salad. My wife had the Bears Benedict, still served at dinner time. Both meals were quite good and hit the spot. For dessert we shared a brownie sundae - definitely no spots left to hit after that one! I went in to Blackbear in Mt. Shasta, at 8am, on Monday May 18, 2026. We were seated just fine, but the waitress was going on break, which is fine, but she said someone would take care of us......didn't happen. After 35 minutes, I decided, I was almost ready for lunch, so I left. This is NOT the first negative encounter I have had there. Now, in fairness, I did eat there on Thanksgiving(2025) and dinner/service was good, but there are have been 3 other times, i've gone there, and received piss-poor service, so i'm done with Blackbear, there are other options, and i'll use those next time. Blows me away what poor service I received. Whoever runs the restaurant is NOT doing a good job, as a retired Property manager, with a focus on customer service, I would NEVER tolerate people being mistreated! While traveling through Shasta, I stopped at the Black Bear Diner on Lake Street in Mount Shasta. I asked for booth seating. The hostess then offered a regular table, but after I explained that my grandson is autistic and he sits in a booth better , she said yes to the booth. She took a couple of minutes to clean it but spent most of that time talking to a coworker about personal stuff. When she finished cleaning the table and set up with placemats & utensils I walked toward the booth-but then she told me, "I have to ask if you can sit here At this point I left, she was discriminatory as I felt the vibe with all the staff as soon as I walked in.
