Stayed here for a hockey tournament. The hotel was awful and clearly hated hockey played. Management threated to call the cops on our kids at 6PM and said kids 13-year-olds could not be in the hallways alone, even though we rented the conference room and knee hockey room for a stupid amount of money. The staff was incredibly rude and unprofessional. 6PM is well before there quiet hours. If they don't want hockey teams in their hotel because they want to cater to their handful of full-time residence, then they shouldn't offer room blocks but I imagine they need the revenue because the place is incredibly dirty and dated. DO NOT stay here if you are in the area for a hockey tournament. The golden eagle was much nicer/clean and friendlier/understanding of the hockey teams. Even the snowy owl, while dirty and outdated was more understanding of hockey teams. Plenty of other options than having to deal with incredible rude staff and having to be threatened by police for kids at 6PM. Terrible experience and will never stay here again. This review is based on the condition of Unit 420. The staff were friendly and helpful, however I sensed they are struggling to run a smooth operation due to the lack of support from their superiors. This lodge hosts both visitors and long term residents, so they try hard to accommodate both, common sense, you need to be respectful of others during your stay which is very reasonable. Unit 420 is disgusting. This wasn't a case of "it wasn't cleaned well after the last stay"... this unit has been neglected for a long time. It also lacks the supplies you would expect it to be furnished with. We were completely horrified by how dirty this unit was. It hasn't been vacuumed, washed or deep cleaned in a very long time, if ever. I hope my review makes it to the owner, you should be ashamed of yourself renting this unit out in the condition it's in while lining your pockets with a good rental fee. read more

This place is awful. The hotel is very old and poorly maintained. Our room had a tiny water heater which ran out of hot water in the middle of my daughter's shower so she had to finish washing her long hair with ice cold water. The front desk couldn't be bothered to bring anything up to our room when we called looking for simple stuff like shampoo or towels. They didn't even have ordinary things like extra hangers for the closet. They claimed the room we got was a suite and would sleep 6 people. There was a twin size trundle bed for small kids and one queen size bed. I had to sleep on the pull out couch so the wife and kids could have beds. There's was a small antique kitchen in our room. The peeling paint in the kitchen area and bathroom wasn't what I expected for the price. There's no amenities except for a disgusting pool and an old arcade. I would recommend going elsewhere. read more

I have been coming to black Bear Lodge for the past 10 year and Waterville sense 1996 , came up here just for a couple days gateway after spending months with this pandemic, at home in Massachusetts and it's been great not to many people right now , but usually this place is bustling with people for ski season and fall scene and summer fun, it's my hideaway to just get away in the valley of the white mountains, and do some hiking. I have to say Black bear lodge is a bit behind as far as condos design, kinda still in the 90's as far as decor, but the staff do make up for it ,most of the units are owned by private owners that rent them out . Now I have to say front desk manger was great she and her staff as we arrived basically unloaded my car and transported my stuff right to my unit, and provided me anything I needed and stayed later for my arrival, and of course enjoyed getting doggy licks from my dog (service-dog) . And not realizing that at first unit had stairs going to our bedroom and bathroom was upstairs as well, as being disabled, they were very good at switching my unit to a all the same level with no problems. I recommend staying here anytime of the year. Cause it is a great private resort and a really special spot in the valley of the white mountains with many things to do for the whole family, and there is A new golf course that's been put in the last couple of years . And there's restaurants and little shops in the main village, post office book shop and country store etc. and a sports center as well,so the decor might be out dated but the people are kind and very helpful.and I definitely felt safe coming here, even when a pandemic going on .so with wearing mask and washing hands its ok , we're all in this together but with happy to keep a distance.here . read more

This place is rough. It has a very cute New England lodge appeal with a friendly staff when you walk in but it stops there. The rooms are in really rough shape, not only completely outdated and stained but worse they are not clean. Our bathroom still had hair in it and others in our group also complained of the lack of cleanliness. The hotel does have an indoor/outdoor pool and a very small arcade that is a hit with the kids. Given the state of the room, I would seek alternative accommodations if we return. read more

Honestly confused why this place has any good reviews... I had to stay here for a wedding and it was horrifying. We booked 7 months in advanced; Our room was disgusting, orange mold all over the bathroom (floor, toilet, shower). The carpet was damp. The beds were uncomfortable and old with stained sheets. The staff was unhelpful. Our furniture smelled. The price did not reflect what a horror we were in for. Do not stay here unless you're looking to get an infection of some kind. read more

What a disappointment. On our third room due to the previous two being so outdated and dirty. Found a towel that looked like a clown wiped their entire face off on it draped over the hand towel bar, as if we weren't going to notice it. Stains on couches. Hairs on bed sheets and pillow case covers, both on the bed, and in the closet, when we tried to get new ones. Don't use a Groupon for this. They will give you the worst room and refuse to give you a refund as they did to us. There is literally nothing here for you to do. No restaurant, bar or food. We stayed here for 2 days and were very disappointed. After visiting the nearby attractions that generally close at 6, it was very upsetting to come back and find out we were unable to use the pool, arcade or gym past 5 pm. This was not indicated to us when making our reservation or upon arrival. We had to clean our room ourselves upon arriving. The front desk employee was not friendly and tried to charge our credit card twice! No extra towels provided. Very disappointing and we will not recommend or return. read more

My family spent several years vacationing up in Waterville Valley, during the 90's. We stayed at a few other lodges but mostly Black Bear Lodge. It was always quiet during the summer. Even though the two-story suites were available, we always picked the first floor to get sliding glass doors. We could leave our bikes right outside, and use our own charcoal grill. Plus, we could play on the grass in a pretty private backyard. When facing the front of Black Bear Lodge, you'll see Mt. Tecumseh as the backdrop. The valley offers multiple picturesque mountain views. Although I haven't vacationed there recently, I've been taking day trips for years. Whenever I walk through the lobby I'm filled with nostalgia, since not much has changed. There's still a cozy sitting area with complimentary coffee, the indoor pool that you can swim your way outdoors from, and an arcade. The rooms have been updated, and the color scheme is different, but overall it feels the same. Northern New Hampshire, especially the white mountain region, has a way of preserving. While staying at Black Bear Lodge, be sure to hike the Mad River Trail. It's a beautiful adventure through the woods. The starting point is between the village square and the path to the Golden Eagle Lodge. Stay on the Fit Trail until you come to a loop. The Mad River Trail is clearly labeled. It's only about a 30-35 minute hike, and dumps you out on a quiet road near the neighboring golf course. Make sure you turn right! Black Bear is another 10-15 min walk from there. You'll notice the strong scent of pine, and the sound of the Mad River. Heaven on earth. As far as pricing goes, this is primarily a ski resort town. The off season prices are usually cheaper but there are fewer shops open in town. Ideal destination for hikers, bikers, and photographers. I'm not sure if they still do this, but our stay included free membership to the recreation center. Olympic sized pool, arcade, and gym. Kayak and bike rentals are a five minute walk away. Lincoln is only a half hour drive, and has a movie theatre, decent restaurants, mini golf, and homemade maple syrup at Fadden's. Not to mention the famous Kancamagus Highway, for amazing foliage and mountain scenery. read more

I had my wedding at Waterville Valley, and set a block of rooms for my guests at the Black Bear Lodge. They were kind enough to waive the 2 night minimum since I had a wedding block. I also requested early check-in for my guests since most of them were travelling from 2+ hours away and golfing before the wedding. The wedding started at 4pm, but check-in was at 3pm. The lodge gave me and my guests a really hard time about this to the point where my wedding planner had to help out and get the general manager of the lodge involved. The GM was extremely nice and accommodating, however the experience left myself and a few guests really upset. The rooms themselves are individually owned condos, so some are a lot nicer than others. They showed me some beautifully renovated rooms during our tour over a year ago, so naturally when I booked I requested an updated/modern room that was facing the mountain (basically, I wanted what they teased me with). I was less than pleased upon check-in to find that despite my request I did not have an updated room. When I asked the desk to change our room since I was the bride, they showed me 3 other rooms that were in worse condition, so I stuck with what I had. I'm giving the lodge a 2/5 because I really feel like I could have enjoyed my stay there, had the customer service been different. They also did waive the minimum so there's a positive. I just can't get over how rudely we were treated about early check-in and upon arrival. read more

We chose this place because it was supposed to be near all the Waterville Valley activities. Despite it being school vacation week nothing was open during the week. It's hard to explain to three children that there is nothing to do, when they were expecting snow tubing and skating. There we're so many other places we could have and should have chosen.... The Black Bear Lodge made for an excellent place to stay for a recent ski weekend. There were five of us looking for a place to stay in a ski town that wasn't overly pricey or pretentious. I managed to find the BBL in an online search for around the Waterville Valley area and was really impressed with the rates. At only 250$ per night for a suite that could sleep up to six people, it was like a dream come true. At check in the staff seemed friendly and provided myself and each one of my guests with a voucher for local activities, including free admission to the skating rink across the street, free shuttle to and from WV ski resort, free admission to the local fitness center, and a couple of other activities that have slipped my mind. I was told that we should write our names on them and be careful not to lose them (the front desk clerk emphasized multiple times that they were worth up to a hundred dollars and would not be replaced if lost). The rooms themselves, as stated in other reviews, are somewhat dated but were completely sufficient for what we needed. There was a murphy bed in the living room (yes, the kind that pulls out of the wall), a double bed in the bed room and a singe bed with a pull out trundle (also in the bedroom, but there was a privacy curtain that could be pulled out to separate the two sides of the room). There was also a full kitchen with all of the appliances, dishes, silverware, pots and pans, and other dining/cooking supplies needed. We filled the fridge with beer, soda, and groceries to make two days worth of meals. This can save a lot of money if you don't mind cooking while on vacation instead of eating out. The living room had a not so comfy couch, a dining table, and some chairs. There was an outdoor hot tub which we utilized and an indoor/outdoor pool. The location is perfect for walking to the town common, taking the shuttle or driving to the X-C or downhill skiing areas, or any of the local pubs or restaurants. My only beef about the entire weekend was that when we went there was a peewee hockey tourny going on and therefor hordes of screaming children running up and down the halls during the evenings. Everything else about our stay was pretty fantastic (although on one morning the entire area lost power, but that wasn't the lodges fault. haha.) If you are in the WV area, I think that this is one of your best bets for a comfy and cheap place to stay. Our digs seemed clean and we didn't have any hiccups with our service or amenities. We have been here before and had overall good experience. The rooms are dated and are definitely in need of updates, however this time we found that the rooms hadn't been cleaned well either. Floor had crumbs and squashed dead moth. The bathroom floor was full of hair. TV remote for bedroom was missing and there was a broken piece of art broken glass and all sitting in the armoire. Not sure if surfaces had been disinfected. In the past we have had great experiences with the front desk and the folks were very friendly and helpful. This time the front desk staff seemed like they didn't want to be there. Thankfully we were there for just 2 nights and spent most of the time outside! I guess this place is good for families on a budget. However if you are looking for something a little more updated you will have to look elsewhere. read more

I stayed at BBL a Friday through Tuesday with my family. We had a really nice room with a kitchenette, a nice livingroom space, flat screen and spacious bedroom. The bathroom was roomy and partitioned where the toilet could be used in privacy while someone else uses the sink/mirror area separately. It was decorated very simple yet cozy. The dishwasher was awesome and saved us dish cleaning. We saw NO BUGS and no spiders in the room the entire stay which was awesome! WiFi worked great the entire stay for our devices to use our beloved Netflix and our smartphones (AT&T and TMOBILE). They included Freedom Passes that offer different activities for free or at a discount. We did bike riding and shopped in the town square. The main event of our stay was going to StoryLand. I dropped one star for a FEW reasons which each on their own werent too big of a deal but all together made it not the best and worth a drop of a star and a half but that is not an option. So the bottom of the shower curtain was just gross. Filthy. So we just moved it on the outside as to not touch it while showering. (Ok fine.) The utensils where nicely laid out in the drawers of the kitchen but when I went to cook with one on the first night, there was old dried up food from who knows how long ago. So we washed each dish before using (whatever, no big deal) the mattresses on the twin bed with trundle were the worst. Painful. Could feel each spring dig in your body as you lay. Instead we found a super comfy bed inside the couch. (Easy fix whatever.) The pool was closed and is closed until 2019 (we were told by reception due to pipe issues) so please be aware if that is a major reason your coming here!! That was the biggest bummer since we were all looking forward to it. The game room is not like the photos on website. It has maybe 8 games, we saw no pool table. All games cost a dollar to play. (Cool, fine) but the machine to get your bills exchanged for quarters was broken! So we could only play with the little bit of quarters the reception offered to exchange us from their registers. We stayed in there maybe 15 mins total. There was a super old trouble board game that was missing pieces and kind of dusty.(whatever) Lastly, housekeeping broke a glass jar of dip we had while we were out on one of the days. They left an apologetic note and "bear bucks" to use in the town square. (Cool no big deal, whatever, accidents happen) BUT! when me and my mother are stepping on sharp glass pieces in three different parts of the room its not OK. To the point where skin was punctured and we had to prick them out of our feet. (We had them come back up to vacuum again and sweep the kitchen, which was appreciated and they came up fast) HOWEVER From then on it was ruined for me because I had my two year old son with me. Hello!!!! It is IMPOSSIBLE to keep a two year old off of the floors for more than 10 minutes. Every parent knows this. I was so worried the rest of our stay that my son was gonna get a piece of glass in his arms or legs playing with his trains on the carpet. Had he, it wouldve been a problem and escalated to the highest degree. A new shower curtain and updated board games are not too much to replace (dollar general or walmart). I dont think much effort is put into the details. Overall nice place I would rate 3.5 out of 5 stars, because they lack in basic areas. I wouldnt recommend it for this summer. Maybe this winter for skiing and next summer if the pool is fixed by then. read more

Our first room didn't look like the pictures on the website at all it was outdated and dirty. The hand towel was used! There was makeup all over it.. the dish towel was absolutely disgusting.. they did not vacuum well.. stains on couch.. hairs on bedding and pillows.. someone used the wall as a tissue!! So gross! Honestly...I don't love it This hotel just doesnt make the mark for me. I wanted to go home the whole time I was here. Hotels are supposed to give you a sense of home or a feeling of not wanting to leave. Let me tell you, I was counting on leaving as being my highlight. Let me give you a run down of the majority of the hotel Rooms: these room are all suite style, which is good for large families or friends staying together. Personally, this style of hotel isn't for me. It has wooden beds, flower sheets and ugly blue carpets. In the room we stayed in, there were 2 floors and a little window looking out into the living room. This window is so incredibly inconvenient. When I'm trying to sleep I can hear the TV blaring, even if it's not on that loud. I stayed on the top bunk bed, and it's very wobbly and uncomfortable. The room also had a very weird smell. It wasn't musty, but something that I couldn't put my finger on the whole time we were there . Overall, I give the rooms a 3/5 stars, just because there were TV's in every room, but the DVD players didn't work sadly. Cleanliness The cleanliness of this hotel is alright. When I was drifting off to sleep, I noticed weird patterns on the sheets, which I think we're stains, God knows what. What also put me off was when I was in the hot tub, I saw little brown things floating around, which really freaked me out, trying to wonder seeing what it was ( before you freak out also, it definitely wasn't poop.) Let me tell you, I got out immediately. Mostly, the other hotel parts were pretty clean, no mold in the bathroom or anything like that. Overall to I'll give the cleanliness a 3/5. Amenities The amenities of the hotel are pretty good. Before I go any further into detail , let me just tell you that the Wifi here, SUCKS. we couldn't watch anything on the TV without it glitching out and stopping, and whenever I tried to go on social media, it would take at least 10 minutes for things to load. Don't even think about watching Netflix or Snapchat stories on your phone either, it lags every two seconds and stops. Probably the worst part of the hotel. Other than that , the amenities were pretty good. There was a nice pool, and a hot tub. There is also vending machines, both with drinks and snacks for your needs. There was an arcade, with a couple games out of order, but overall good to entertain the little ones with. With the purchase of a room, you also get a pass to the local athletic center, with an Olympic size pool and 3 hot tubs . Overall, I give the amenities a 4/5, not a 5/5 because of the wifi . Location The location of the inn is great. It's about a 5 minute drive to Waterville mountain, and about 10 minutes if you take the shuttle, which takes you to a number of places in the area. There is also a town center about a 2 minute walk down the road, complete with restaurants, stores, and an ice skating rink, and more. If you don't plan on skiing one day, I recommend checking out the Town Center, for a bite to eat or a fun time ice skating . I give the location a 5/5 read more

Great place to stay!!! The room we had was awesome! We were on the third floor! We got a Groupon deal since we like to go to NH in January. The restaurants around were terrible unless you get takeout from exit28 pizza place (only delivers Wed-Sun). I do recommend la tasse cafe in the town square ! They have the best white hot chocolate! The other restaurants in that square are awful! I do recommend bringing your own groceries and cooking yourself if you don't mind. They do have full kitchens in the room. The pool is very nice and if you go underwater you'll be outside (don't be afraid!)! We would go back again! read more

This place was phenomenal. My son participated in the White Mountain Shootout hockey tournament, and I booked rooms for our team here. Most everyone stayed in a deluxe room, but my Husband and I took a loft with two bedrooms in order to host the team meals. The hotel was very clean, staff was fantastic and handled the rowdy groups with ease. We even had some rivalry issues which the staff was very helpful and accommodating. You can walk to everything in the village. We will definitely be staying here next year! read more

The lodge was clean and perfect size for 5 of us, two adults and three kids. We visited the end of April so there weren't many stores open on site. Wifi was not available at the time. The kids loved the pool that was minutes away from our room. The restaurant had limited options because they were closing soon for renovation. We drove about 15mins away to Benton's sugar Shack which was definitely worth the drive. Overall it was a relaxing away-from-the city craziness trip for our family. read more

Really, a wonderful experience. Our hockey team stayed there for a tournament weekend and the service was excellent! Comfortable, reasonably priced, with many amenities thanks to the Activity Pass. We were on the ground floor by the pool and game room and knee-hockey room. The rink was an easy stroll across the parking lot. The housekeeping staff even knew our name! Everything I asked the front desk for they tried to accommodate, even board games. We would highly recommend it and definitely plan to go back. read more

All in all, the Black Bear Lodge was enjoyable. Free parking, free standard breakfast (oatmeal, bread/pastries, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, cereal, fruit), free shuttle to/from the Village, an indoor pool, and a bar/restaurant on site. The price seemed a bit expensive (~$240/night after fees and taxes for a standard room on a Saturday - Monday trip, which is comparable to Manhattan), but a reasonable value overall. It looks like other Yelp reviewers purchased $99 Groupons and others had suites for just $250/night, so I would recommend looking around for deals and promos. The room was clean: full-size beds, modern bathroom, wardrobe, nook for ski equipment, and flat-screen TV. No refrigerator, microwave, or coffee maker. One pit of advice: ask for a room on the second or third floor. We stayed on the ground floor (one level down from the lobby), and I have a two complaints: First, the hallway on ground floor smells like a smoking lounge. Thankfully, our room did not smell like smoke, but the hallway is completely different. If that bothers you, beware. Second, the walls in this hotel are *very thin*. I consider myself a heavy sleeper (have never had trouble sleeping in any other hotel in my life), but the people in the room above us were stomping around at 2:00am and 3:00am. Honestly, it sounded like they were walking around in ski boots. I finally had to go to the front desk at 3:45am to make a noise complaint because it was impossible to sleep. Understandably, the Lodge cannot control whether the guests are rowdy, but caution to future visitors: do not stay on the ground level (i.e., 100 level). Made for a very rough night's sleep, which is never good before a long day of skiing. Would return in the future (on the second floor), if I could find a lower nightly rate. read more

My family and I went to Waterville Valley to volunteer for the Special Olympic 2017 Winter games. We book the last available room that I could find within a five mile radios the mountain. My Husband and I were going to be split into two teams to volunteer...and I know they were short on help which is why we just didn't leave to go home. When we checked in at 4, we were greeted by very professional and friendly staff. We proceeded to our room, room 103, which was on the bottom floor, ground level. As I look around, I realized that the room was not as pictured in the photos online. I did a quick 'Mom scan' of the room and was not impressed with what I saw. (see photos) Dirt on the fans, the chains are filthy, popcorn in the couch. There was makeup all over the bathroom door and on the handle of the blow dryer. The dinning room table was sticky. The filth on the bathtub was beyond gross. We decided at a family to tough it out because we had an obligation that night and the next day. We were almost three hours from home. We decided check with all of the area hotels in the morning. I did not unpack; I did not use the kitchen, I did not bath my child that night. As we were getting ready for bed...I was looking for a plug to charge my phone...behind the nightstand was a pair of PANTIES...I didn't get a picture because I was so horrified. I immediately called the front desk, and within 3 minutes a very kind staff member arrived with gloves. At 4am...I went to the front desk to see if there was any other rooms available because the mattresses...yes, all of them...we aged beyond their use. My Husband has worked in the hotel business, so I know that there are always other rooms on hand in case of emergency. I was told the front desk manager would be in at 7...the man was very friendly, although not in uniform. Promptly at 7, I went to the front desk. I was presented with a key to a new room which was an upgrade...and an apology. The staff said that the owner of the room was 'not ready' to have her place be rented but they 'needed' the space and asked her to let them rent it. The staff did offer to help me move our items and asked if there was anything else they could do. The new upgraded room was cleaner but the beds were AWFUL. Clearly, cheap mattresses. We ended up putting the comforters from 4 beds on the mattress my Daughter was on and she was still in tears in the next morning saying she didn't sleep at all on the bed was to hard. So, now time to check out... I went to the desk. I was told I was all set. So I asked for a receipt for my stay. I was charged FULL PRICE for BOTH NIGHTS. Only after I said I wanted to be "comped' for the first night did I receive a partial refund Lastly, the icing on the cake was received in the mail yesterday. I received a bulky package from the Black Bear Lodge. I figured it was an apology letter and a souvenir sweatshirt. It turned out to be a musty blanket from the unit we stayed in. No note, no phone call, no nothing. They charged $8.78 to our credit card, without our knowledge, to ship this blanket to us. THE BLANKET DOES NOT BELONG TO US. read more

First our room was a deluxe suite with a fully equipment kitchen, living room. 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. Perfect for our family of 3. Checked in a was given a freedom pass which included tickets to the white mountains athletic club, 9 holes of golf, tennis, mountain bike rental including a bike for my 3 year with training wheels which she loved and even tricycles, boat rentals, chairlift ride, ice skating, recreation department, curious George story time, resort shuttle (which you don't really need as the town square is across the street. I was highly impressed with the town square as we visited Labor Day weekend and there were lots of activities going on there like yoga, live music, fireworks and you can walk across with your own alcoholic beverages since it is a national park pretty much anywhere which was a plus for us adults. So we were pleased with our stay expect for next time would rather not have a room right next to the lobby but we will be back as there is so much to do and the only reason we picked this place to begin with was to go to Santa's Village which is about an hour away. read more
