Hidden gem alert!!! Heading back to Syracuse from the Catskill region, we stopped at the Black Cat Cafe and Bakery for lunch. A quaint cafe in a beautiful, historic NY small town. The food was absolutely fresh, delicious, and creative. We spoke with the owner when the rush cleared, and it's evident he cares deeply about his quality and service. I wish we had room for dessert! What a great place to find for lunch. We had visited a nearby lavender farm and were ready for lunch and found this place. It had everything you want from a small charming cafe. Indoor and outdoor tables, eclectic and charming decor and most importantly good food. There are lots of Lebanese touches on the menu. I ordered a Labneh plate with pita and Kalamata olives. The Lebanese yogurt was rich and creamy combined with olive oil. My niece had a classic NY bagel with Lox. The capers and scallions were a nice touch. We were sitting outside near a tree that was growing through the deck with a hole surrounding it. I went to put my purse on the back of my chair and it fell in the hole!! About 3 ft. down. Luckily the charming owner got a younger member of the kitchen staff to crawl below the deck and retrieve my purse. My hero! They really should put some mesh over the opening. After that the owner started talking to us and told us some very interesting stories. We were the only ones there so he had time to chat with us. It was fun! He talked me into trying a lavender, oat milk latte. Their most popular drink. They roast the coffee on site. I took it to go. It was good. The other staff members were also very friendly and accommodating. Feb. 22, 2020 Want to visit Schitts Creek in upstate NY? Historic Sharon Springs was full of tourists today. It is last week of "Rose Apothecary" (modified store front/pop up of actual 1802 Beekman Shop) honoring final season of Schitts Creek TV series. Tony Daou, owner of nearby Black Cat Cafe, inspired tribute to Schitts Creek because he looks like the star of show Eugene Levy who plays Johnny Rose. Check out resemblance! The Black Cat was crazy busy on a nice Feb. day, but Tony honored our 1:00 reservation. He took our order and and answered a couple of questions about the food. The Thanksgiving Everyday Sandwich I ordered was terrific and worthy of a return visit! It was Fresh roasted turkey, a smear of cranberries, and (drum roll) a 2 inch layer of delicious dressing. Also enjoyed--tasty Stuffed Grape Leaves, popular house made Hummus, the legendary Curry Chicken Salad, and a Turkey Reuben. The Chicken Salad was the best ever I was told. (I did not have any because I do not like raisins in my chicken salad.) For dessert, we indulged in slices of the signature Coconut Cake which lived up to its reputation. We enjoyed cups of full bodied fresh coffee and Harney Teas. After lunch, we visited the "Rose Apothecary" -- the popular Beekman shop disguised with a tribute to Schitts Creek sign. I was in Sharon Springs for an event with Beekman 1802. My mom and I stopped by Black Cat Cafe hoping to grab a bite to eat before the event. Currently, there is no indoor seating, but I don't know where the tables would have gone anyway. There is a small shopping area inside and the cash register; no room for tables with the current set up. When we approached the front door, we were greeted by the owner coming up behind us snapping, "masks are required inside." Not exactly a warm welcome. He was running around the cafe like a chicken with its head cut off, and was not polite while speaking to customers or staff. The staff seemed used to his behavior, but mom and I were appalled. It took more than 20 minutes for us to order hummus and pita, and receive the order. We overheard the owner complaining to another customer about how the Beekman 1802 events always clear out his entire kitchen. These events are posted for public knowledge... he should prepare the cafe better if he knows it is going to be busy. Anyway, the hummus was delicious and was served with fresh, warm pita. read more

What a fabulous little cafe! The food here is amazing. It is Mediterranean style, light fare, and entirely delicious. They have good drinks and great deserts. The owner, Tony, is very friendly and attentive to his customers. It sounds like this place has been a favorite institution in this town for 20 years or so. I was disappointed in our lunch here. For 5 of us, the meal was fairly expensive for what we ordered. I wanted to treat my family and friends to lunch and now I just wish we'd picked another place. My friend ordered a pita sandwich version of a BLT, which was supposed to come with hummus instead of bacon. There literally was a few teaspoons of the hummus smeared extremely lightly. Were they running low? She took one bite of it and had to do an inspection to even prove there was any hummus in the sandwich. It did not come with anything else - no fries, no chips, nada, zip, zilch. One of us ordered a turkey sandwich. Bland, hardly any meat. It was about the whitest sandwich we ever saw - LOL. I ordered the mac and cheese, which was about the only dish we all universally liked, but again, the serving was miniscule. I'm guessing maybe they had a busy weekend and were literally running out of food. In that case, they should have warned us or told us which dishes were not available. No thank you. read more

We had spent the day enjoying the Garden Party weekend and ready to grab something quick to eat. The menu looked promising but we were pretty disappointed when our meals arrived. I had the Cassandra sandwich described as a house-roasted turkey breast on toasted white with mayonnaise, tomato & bacon for $9. I got exactly that on a lightly toasted thin sliced white bread with two slices of turkey, one tomato and 2 limp slices of bacon. And a schmear of mayo... no lettuce, no chips, no fries, nada and oops, no flavor either. Sorry that I was so hungry that I ate it before taking a picture but another reviewer posted a picture of their half an inch thick sandwich which looked as pathetic as mine. Another diner ordered the Lebanese potato salad but other than a healthy sprinkle of parsley, we didn't taste anything even vaguely Lebanese inspired flavor in that little dish of cubed potatoes. Wife and I drove over from Glenville to checkout the Beekman place, checked out a couple more stores along Main St before deciding to have lunch. This was the only place available that we saw and decided to drop on in. It's small and a little cramped but very nice, picked our table and were able to order our drinks and lunch rather quickly, they were a bit busy. Wife ordered the BLT and I got the Thanksgiving sandwich... Wow, neither of us were disappointed although she thought her blt had too much mayo but enjoyed it anyway. The Thanksgiving sandwich was outstanding, an actual turkey breast and not your run of the mill boars head deli slice variety. We also got the blaak & Mac which I liked but the wife didn't. Do agree with previous reviewers that chips, pickle or something should come with the sandwiches. Having said that, we hoped to make a return visit in the not too distant future. Just had lunch here with my daughter for the first time. Great service (owner and server)! Great food! Super desserts and I loved the full coffee/tea bar. So nice inside as well! All the soups are vegan before adding meat and they have no problem telling you what is and isn't vegan, if that's your thing like my daughter. Really love this place! The Gorgo salad was divine too! The Black Cat Cafe is a great place to get breakfast, lunch, coffee, etc. I especially recommend the Reuben and Thanksgiving Everyday sandwiches. Both are extremely large, so good for sharing or just when you are very hungry! The cafe has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, so it is a good place to eat year round. You can also get food to go and take it out to Chalybeate Park to eat. read more

Left with very mixed feelings...mark and I went for the priciest breakfast dish: egg white omelet with goat cheese and tarragon: they left out the tarragon...how does that happen when there are only three ingredients in the entire preparation? My main issue was once the food was delivered, no one did the customary check back to make sure all was well...never got a chance to bring the missing ingredient to anyone's attention until the end of the meal...sure we could have gotten up to locate someone, but should we have to? The staff did take off the cost off a doughnut for our troubles...hmmm. This dish, for what it was, was WAY overpriced: $9.95 for a 2 (possibly 3) egg white omelet with a dash of goat cheese, most likely a sprinkling of tarragon (when used it should be done so sparingly anyway) and one piece of buttered toast...seriously? Not even a fruit garnish??? Mango smoothie that my son ordered at first glance looked to be a pleasant surprise...until I determined that it was most likely made up of ice and mango syrup...I'm pretty sure there wasn't anything natural about it, especially as it separated... They did put out some nice looking pastries (of which we sampled the doughnut mentioned earlier: good but still a doughnut...). Final blow, however, were the multiple hanging fly traps that were in the first line of sight into the kitchen...each adorned with multiple, quite sizable catches...ugh...pretty sure fly traps shouldn't be in a kitchen. The place could be super cute, but it needs a good scrubbing, fewer hanging fly traps (at least put them put of customer sight) and some quality assurance oversight. read more

Next time I would go to the American across the street. Me and 3 friends were up here for some adventures in upstate NY, and this was apparently the only game in town. We popped in for breakfast, options were pretty limited. We ended up getting the James Beard french toast, an omelette, some oatmeal, and granola. I got the omelette, which was pretty rubbery and nothing special, not including of any sides (sans toast), service was a bit slow, as it all took awhile to come out to us and took a fair bit longer for us to get our check (in spite of there not being many others there). The french toast was actually pretty amazing, and I would recommend it, but all in all nothing else was too impressive. Would definitely try the American, across the street, for brunch next time I was there. The menu seemed a little more exciting and brunch-oriented. read more

I stopped by here twice for breakfast while in the area. I had an omelet the first time, and a cream cheese and lox on bagel the second trip. Both were good, although I would prefer a little bit less cream cheese next time. I had fresh squeezed orange juice that was excellent. I also took some fresh-baked croissants(both almond and chocolate) and a donut to a cousin that I had coffee with, and she said those were good as well. This place will be a regular stop when I visit the area. read more

Stopped in for lunch and shared the lox and bagel and Reuben sandwich with my friend. The lox was fresh and tasty and the bagel had good crust to it. The Reuben was meaty and tender and the toasted bread was delicious. The coconut cake and bread pudding were certainly worth the extra calories. Everything here is homemade and high quality. I also love the Wild Julia. Had it twice excellent! Lebanese Potato Salad, potatoes, parsley, dressed with olive oil, garlic, salt & lemon, 4.50 Hummus, made fresh here daily, Lebanese-style with olive oil & paprika, & pita triangles, 4.50 Next time -Thanksgiving Everyday, house roasted warm turkey breast, mayo, stuffing, cranberry sauce on toasted white, 9.95 I hope I can resist my other 2 favorites! Tony prepared awesome lunches for the two of us. First were marinaded butter beans and carrot ginger soup... Both excellent. Our entrees were the Gobbler turkey sandwich and the gorgo Gorgonzola salad, which were like Thanksgiving précis and all the good things one wants in an entree salad, including the remarkable balsamic fig drizzle dressing. Dessert was a lumberjack size piece of the house carrot cake, and a white chocolate chip/cranberry cookie. Both desserts exceeded expectations. We should have walked back to Albany! So the biggest pro for this cafe was that it has dog friendly outdoor seating and was open for lunch. However, it was an expensive lunch for a mediocre meal. My husband had the corn beef sandwich. It was nicely spiced and tender but be warned that it is not thin sliced but a slab of corned beef thrown on some rye bread and a bit on the small side. And, no sides, chips, pickle....nothing else for $12. I had the Gorgo salad (14) which was very heavy on the fig preserves and the fig balsamic drizzle. When I mentioned it to the waitress she said that next time I should tell them to go light on the fig. The best part of the meal was the soup du jour which was lentil and chickpea and had great Moroccan type flavors. The Blaack and Cheese side was okay but a bit bland and small. All in all not worth the $44 we paid. The waitress was very nice to our dog (got her water) and was fairly attentive throughout the meal. read more

One of the worst places I've been too. I've tried it 3 times but only because it should be good and there is no breakfast place to eat at in the area. So this review is only for their breakfast. I think I'll just start with my last visit. The place is almost empty except for another couple, we choose a table and the top is sticky and disgusting. Not from that day but as if it had never been cleaned up from the day before. Looking around the table, the condiments on the table were gross, they looked like they had been sitting out forever and just looked disgusting. So the coffee comes, the coffee is terrible every time I go. I roast my own coffee but at work I drink Folgers if that's what people make, so I'll drink anything if I have too. This coffee isn't even up to Folgers standards, my guess is the coffee is really really old and is just sitting out getting stale. They have no little pitcher of milk or creamer despite the prices on the menu, they have the little creamers on the table like I'm paying diner prices. I open a creamer, pour it in and it's just clumps. At the same time, my wife is putting creamer in her coffee, or clumps of creamer in her coffee I should say. Disgusting. My wife likes to get the James Beard's French Toast. She at least likes the idea of getting something that is different. I decided to order it this last time too. The cornflakes on the outside have cooked a little too long and they're a little black and overcooked. Not a huge deal, stale cornflakes maybe brown a little faster than normal cornflakes. Luckily the French Toast is reasonably priced for the lack of quality, only $10....... This place just has the feel of a place that might have been really good when it first opened and is now just going through the motions, pretty disappointing with the rejuvenation the town is going through. Maybe lunch service is significantly better and the place is cleaned up before then? The pictures on Yelp the food looks really good. Avoid the breakfast though. read more

I came to Black Cat for breakfast today and enjoyed my experience. I got Connie's Egg scramble with tomatoes and cheese with toast for $7 with a side of bacon for $3. Coffee was $2.50. The service was prompt and very helpful. I just think the cost was too high for what I received. read more

The food here was great and the atmosphere was super cute. I ordered the bagelwich and substituted the bagel with gluten free bread. Pleasantly surprised how good it was and how large the portion size was. They gave me two sandwiches which would apparently be the equivalent to one bagelwich. My friend and I had to change tables after we ordered to accommodate a larger party and the owner (I think) was so appreciative he gave us a free slice of cheesecake. Stopped in here on a trip from the Saratoga Springs area back to Rochester. Figured 20 minutes out of the way each way wasn't too bad. Just off the thruway. I asked for the Tuscan Chicken panini with no bread, just over some greens. The request was accommodated politely. The pesto was delicious. My boyfriend got eggs and bacon with home fries and enjoyed it. His request for no bread was also accommodated politely. The Black Cat never disappoints. Right now you can get their fruitcake to go. They are now serving granola from my favorite place, the Sharon Springs Granola Company. Incredibly impressed with the attention to detail for Covid precautions. The outdoor seating was well spaced from other tables, and mask, gloves and also at one point face shield were worn by provider of food. I work in a hospital and this was a place I could totally relax while eating since it was up to my standards for sanitizing and prevention precautions. Coupled with out of this world delicious food I urge you to dine out here. I had the turkey, dressing, cranberry sandwich which was served warm on delicious bread. It was like a memory of joy from past thanksgivings. My dining partner had the chicken curry salad, on raisin bread that tasted "wonderful ." High praise from my friend the foodie. read more
