Went to Mission Oak Grill for brunch on Saturday. The environment when you walk in is warm and friendly, but moody at the same time. It seems like a good place to bring your family. Playlist was awesome and appropriate for anyone, and our server was a genuine, kind person with lots of personality. Brunch is all you can eat for $20 and $6 bloody marys! Great price point, but you get what you pay for. That said, my experience at the grill was not one to write home about. Our server took ten minutes to come over, and then another ten minutes after we got our drinks to take our order. When the food came out, he brought my partners entire order, and only half of mine. I watched the other half of my order sit under the heat lamp for a good 5+ minutes. They were clearly understaffed, with only two folks running the floor (bartending, serving, and hosting). The food was underwhelming. Almost everything that hit the table (breakfast tacos and eggs benny) was something you could make easily at home. Nothing special or different, but the huevos tacos was a hit. Overall OK experience at the grill, but we went for a celebratory meal, and were disappointed.

Pitiful Benedict with burned potatoes

We traveled from NY to spend Father's Day with family. We were told it would be a spectacular brunch, many courses, mimosas etc. when we got there we realized the reservation wasn't needed it was almost empty. When the menu arrived we asked about the brunch. We were informed we could order eggs Benedict or French toast. There was no food spectacular. We ordered Benedict, my son asked for a side of sausage, they couldn't do it!! I don't usually do negative reviews but this place needs to wake up. The ambiance is really nice, as was our server, he kept apologizing for what they couldn't do. I asked if other tables were complaining and he said yes. Now we know why the place was almost empty. We won't be back.

The place is cool, old church converted to restaurant. I took picture of sky over it thinking it was a church earlier in the day. Service was great l, friendly and helpful. Food looked and tasted amazing only down was it was cool not hot at all. Will give it another go, next time in the area.

Soooooo I've never been here before. There was a good gift card promo last December so I bought one. Went there on a Monday night. It's nice in here, dark furnishings and nice lighting. There were 4 seated tables and one server. She didn't seem overwhelmed yet the service was lacking. We started with lobster Rangoon which came out almost immediately: at room temperature. Now when food comes out that fast and isn't hot you know it's been sitting there under heat lamps for awhile. Our server never came to check on us so we ate them how they were served. When she came to clear our plates she never asked how they were and I didn't offer a complaint at that point because we were so hungry that we just ate them anyway! By the way they were very good, just not warm. I was unsure what to order for a meal and she asked what I was considering. One of my choices was the gnocchi bolognese, and she told me I could take that off my choices because they didn't have it. Being on the coast I expected more seafood on the menu but there really wasn't a lot. I ended up with the baked haddock. It was cooked nicely however the potatoes it was served with were far from "silky" per the description and everything on the plate lacked flavor. Huge pet peeve: no salt/pepper on the tables! I had to wait for my inattentive server to see me waving and ask for salt. My date had the fried rice with steak tips. The tips had a good marinade but again, the rice lacked flavor and seasoning. Poor service. Poorly seasoned bland food. I would say the older population might enjoy but we didn't.

Absolutely fantastic food! Both the steaks were cooked perfectly, we got in and we were seated really quickly and our waitress was so helpful and attentive! The one thing that was underwhelming was the Mac'n Cheese. We heard about it from a few people and it was a bit of a letdown, but our steaks made up for it. The atmosphere is cozy dark bar scene and I saw the upstairs had a beautiful room for parties or events!

How is the seafood?

Both my husband and I say it's the best scallops we've ever had.

** Burger and Donut Review **…read more Outstanding space with a rustic modern look, a 4-sided bar, balanced seating (booths, tables, high-tops), an outdoor patio, and a private room. My wife and I had the pleasure of sitting in seats more akin to living room furniture-- that's a good thing. Also good was the breeze that blew in from the deck on a hot day. -- Blackened Cod Sandwich: This was my wife's lunch and it looked very good, with a brioche bun, and no shortage of condiments. Most importantly, the tall portion of fish was very moist and very well seasoned. My small taste didn't have the classic "blackened" vibe, but it was very good. A mini basket of fries provided plenty. Probably frozen, but good quality and a good balance between crisp and droopy. -- Dry Aged Burger: As a burger aficionado, that's what I came for, and a dry aged one-- a rarity around Boston, sadly-- gets my attention immediately. This one, ordered medium rare, brought a decent crust and decent moistness inside, though both could be more pronounced. It was probably closer to medium than medium rare, and the brioche bun was a white bready under the dome, but it worked. The dry aged flavor came through immediately. Good supporting cast among the sauces and vegetation, and same fry basket treatment as on my wife's plate. Overall, good instead of the hoped-for great. -- Donuts: We came at brunch, so this was a nice option for us to treat as a dessert. My opening came when I saw another server walk by with a plate and I asked her upon returning, "What was that plate of meatball-looking things?" She said those were the apple cider donut bites, and proceeded to gush that they were her favorite thing on the menu and a don't-miss item. This prevented me from having to twist my wife's arm, so it was a done deal. The "bites" were fairly large, closer to baseball size than golfball size, with a nice thick outer crunch yielding to a very warm, still-moist-but-fully-cooked interior. Delicious cinnamon flavor on the outside, natural donut dough flavor inside, and kicked up by a thin, cinnamon-maple sauce underneath and a whipped cream (they called it and vanilla anglaise) on the sides. Fantastic, and in an era when "artisan" donuts run $5 apiece even out of a fridge, getting six warm ones of higher quality for $12 was a steal. The burger was closer to good than great, but overall a good meal, good service, great space, and surprisingly good value (on all three items). I'd be interested to try them for dinner.

One of the great traditions of Newburyport is the Starboard Galley. My wife's family has gone to it…read morefor nearly 40 years. It is old school. It is one of a handful of restaurants in Newburyport that continued strong (Park Lunch, the Grog, Thirsty Whale). It has a view of the Merrimac river and is next to the rail trail. The inside decor is classic and probably hasn't changed in decades, but it is comfortable and has that Oceanside charm. The service is always good. Christin has been our server a couple times and she is wonderful - funny, attentive and suggestions. You're always seated quickly. We sat on the outside, covered seating. The food is classic. We started with their clam chowder. That is excellent. The stuffed clams are probably the best in Newburyport. The iceberg wedge salad is amazing with generous blue cheese and bacon on a nice crispy wedge. Probably one of the best values in Newburyport. The onion rings are crispy and tasty. The fried clams are some of the best in the city. You can get a Budweiser for under six dollars. The prices are a good value with lots of good food. Don't expect fancy. But if you want to have an old school seafood meal, the Starboard Galley is the right place. If you want to grab a beer at there, old bar, enjoy it at a great price point.
