We had an amazing dinner at Mission Oak! We were a group of 19, there to celebrate a milestone birthday. Mission Oak had the perfect spot for a large group that didn't require a separate room, yet still had a large table in a semi-private space that made you feel like part of the restaurant but also you could get up and walk around to chat. The service was wonderful. Our server, Francisco, adeptly handled our large group-- he was efficient, intuitive of our needs and kind. Danielle, the manager, made sure we had absolutely everything we needed. The food was wonderful...some favorites included the lobster rangoons, the clam chowder, and the haddock. Bad experience on Fri, 9/4/26. Had reservation with future in-laws. Front desk woman lovely & sat us at circular table by kitchen. She explained special was 18oz ribeye with roasted brussel sprouts, baked potato & onion strings for $68. Hubby & I decided to split this meal. Pre-ordered 2 salads which were decent. When time to order, waiter said special was 18oz ribeye with asparagus and mashed potatoes. Explained what front desk woman had stated special to be and we wanted what she explained. Because of this & other changes to meals, I kindly asked him to write the orders down. He said, "no worries I got this." Guess what, he didn't got it. Female companion ordered Sesame Bowl with salmon. Our $68 meal came -- potato was starchy (old) and not warm. Brussel sprouts were hard. The meat--no way was it an 18oz (even cooked down) piece of meat. Was cut very thin & barely enough for one person. Didn't receive onion strings. Female companion got her sesame bowl, but WITHOUT the salmon. Had to wait another 10min because we kept hearing "the kitchen was backed up". Really bad performance with $300+ bill to show for it. Wouldn't mind paying if it was worth it, but they really missed the mark. I emailed restaurant to explain situation, but never heard from them, so need to share my experience via YELP. Sorry MOG we won't be back, but need to share the final nail in the coffin---there was gum under the table where I sat (2nd seat in from the left if facing circular table). Just gross. read more

If you are looking for a great brunch in Newburyport this might just be the place. We went for their bottomless brunch and were highly pleased with service and food. Focaccia and home fries were excellent. Avocado toast was delicious although our eggs were slightly harder than we like. My partner decided to go with the huevos rancheros next and asked for runny poached eggs - they were perfectly cooked. Pierogis were great. Fish tacos were fantastic. Waffles were perfect. The absolute highlight was their chili - from the way it was plated to its delicious taste. Our server Linda was a delight! Manager also stopped by and was super pleasant. Went to Mission Oak Grill for brunch on Saturday. The environment when you walk in is warm and friendly, but moody at the same time. It seems like a good place to bring your family. Playlist was awesome and appropriate for anyone, and our server was a genuine, kind person with lots of personality. Brunch is all you can eat for $20 and $6 bloody marys! Great price point, but you get what you pay for. That said, my experience at the grill was not one to write home about. Our server took ten minutes to come over, and then another ten minutes after we got our drinks to take our order. When the food came out, he brought my partners entire order, and only half of mine. I watched the other half of my order sit under the heat lamp for a good 5+ minutes. They were clearly understaffed, with only two folks running the floor (bartending, serving, and hosting). The food was underwhelming. Almost everything that hit the table (breakfast tacos and eggs benny) was something you could make easily at home. Nothing special or different, but the huevos tacos was a hit. Overall OK experience at the grill, but we went for a celebratory meal, and were disappointed. read more

We were told it would be a spectacular brunch, many courses, mimosas etc. when we got there we realized the reservation wasn't needed it was almost empty. When the menu arrived we asked about the brunch. We were informed we could order eggs Benedict or French toast. There was no food spectacular. We ordered Benedict, my son asked for a side of sausage, they couldn't do it!! I don't usually do negative reviews but this place needs to wake up. The ambiance is really nice, as was our server, he kept apologizing for what they couldn't do. I asked if other tables were complaining and he said yes. Now we know why the place was almost empty. I've reviewed this restaurant a couple times in the past and have eaten here several times. It's been one of my go to spots for a reliably good to very good experience. Tonight was sub par in the extreme. Arrived at 5:30 per my reservation. Sat for 20 minutes before our waiter arrived, then another 15 for drinks to arrive. We ordered dinner entrees and apps at this time, apps came out 25 minutes later and entrees 40 minutes after that. This might be understandable if it was busy but it wasn't. It seems there was one waiter for the dinning room and one cook visible in the kitchen. The food was mid. Arancini app was really good, Empanadas were dry and way overdone, guessing frozen then deep fried. A burger ordered medium was very rare, cold and red in the middle. My sirloin ordered medium was gray in the middle. The Au poivre 5 dollar up charge for a$52 steak is laughable. What you get is essentially a bouillon cube reduction. No hint of cream, cognac or pepper. Steak frites were really maybe choice steak tips, cooked ok but tough. Our waiter was doing his best but had to flag him down for everything. We had ordered a takeout order for a family member at home, which came out 30 minutes before our entrées were received, which just seemed bizarre. Just a weird and off experience. Definitely going to think twice about going back. Definitely not a $300 experience. read more

My experience mirrored Sophie's... We were seated... it took almost 15 min for someone to wait on us... The menu has printed warnings that it's all you can eat for 1.5hrs ONLY and no doggy bags. You'd think lobster and caviar were being ordered with all these guardrails!! No- just tiny, sad, soggy waffles with 5 chocolate chips, huevos that taste like they reused marinara from the meatballs...a breakfast taco that consisted of lettuce hiding minuscule specs of scrambled eggs... We spent 45 min of our visit sitting and waiting... the waitress came 3 times to our table and then disappeared... I had 1.5 tacos (one was inedible) and my companions had 3 tacos. These are tapas sized... it was a real waste of $20...but if you don't wait on customers then they don't eat into your profits I guess? As other reviewers said- they were understaffed- even for the 6 tables that were filled. They need to set up a brunch station- enough with making waitresses run back and forth with mini plates... and turning the kitchen into short order cooks. Not an experience to be repeated. read more

Soooooo I've never been here before. There was a good gift card promo last December so I bought one. Went there on a Monday night. It's nice in here, dark furnishings and nice lighting. There were 4 seated tables and one server. She didn't seem overwhelmed yet the service was lacking. We started with lobster Rangoon which came out almost immediately: at room temperature. Now when food comes out that fast and isn't hot you know it's been sitting there under heat lamps for awhile. Our server never came to check on us so we ate them how they were served. When she came to clear our plates she never asked how they were and I didn't offer a complaint at that point because we were so hungry that we just ate them anyway! By the way they were very good, just not warm. I was unsure what to order for a meal and she asked what I was considering. One of my choices was the gnocchi bolognese, and she told me I could take that off my choices because they didn't have it. Being on the coast I expected more seafood on the menu but there really wasn't a lot. I ended up with the baked haddock. It was cooked nicely however the potatoes it was served with were far from "silky" per the description and everything on the plate lacked flavor. Huge pet peeve: no salt/pepper on the tables! I had to wait for my inattentive server to see me waving and ask for salt. My date had the fried rice with steak tips. The tips had a good marinade but again, the rice lacked flavor and seasoning. Poor service. Poorly seasoned bland food. I would say the older population might enjoy but we didn't. read more

The parmesan fries were lukewarm and just sucked. no salt, no parmesan and not hot. The burger could have been good except they forgot to season it. The person next to me ordered a medium burger and got a grey well done burger. It's a cool spot but they obviously have no real kitchen leadership. The chicken sandwich was just meh. The one thing that was underwhelming was the Mac'n Cheese. We heard about it from a few people and it was a bit of a letdown, but our steaks made up for it. Five medium scallops and one very small scallop. One of the scallops tasted badly. If I had had a paper napkin I would have spit it out. Price was high at $39 for a subpar meal. Sangria was tasty. I hate to write this as it's so disappointing. I've gone to MO for years, but I've had 3 consecutive bad experiences there. It's definitely gone way downhill. The food used to be reliable and good. Not anymore. Will not be going back. Just this past week I went with a group to celebrate a birthday. Lobster Rangoon, inedible. Had a bad fish taste, certainly not lobster. Mac n cheese inedible. Heavy, heavy bacon smoked flavor, no finesse or touch to what is a very simple dish. Crab cake - at $24 quite expensive - was one thick crab cake, burned on top, crusty, no softness, no melding of great flavors, no flavor. We didn't eat. Burger cooked wrong. I have no idea what is happening there. Service was good, but food? Third bad experience. Done. read more

Booked a reservation on a Thursday for the coming Friday night and thought it was odd that they had many times available but thought we'd give it a try for our anniversary. (Ignored the first red flag). Walked in for our 7:30 pm reservation the weekend before Thanksgiving and the bar was filled but restaurant was desolate to say the least. (Husband mentioned leaving in a joking manner but we probably should have) . The server was lovely, upbeat and energetic. Had recommendations and we took them. Unfortunately they weren't the best but possibly were the best they had to offer. I had the filet for around $67/69 and it was overdone and had no flavor (to be fair, we didn't mention our dissatisfaction with it because we just wanted to enjoy the night and not stress about the meal). My husband had another steak option that came recommended, CHURRASCO, unfortunately not a hit either. Ventured out and tried the cheesecake that came highly recommended from the server..., not good at all, my husband is someone who usually doesn't comment on a dessert because they are a "dessert" but his comment was that it was "awful". The service was great and drinks were average. The prices were RIDICULOUS for what we received. Spending around $200-275 for a meal for two and walking out questioning everything ...... We went to Mission Oak Grill the weekend before Christmas. The restaurant atmosphere and staff were great (5 stars for them). We ordered the rice balls (special) and crab cakes to start. The rice balls were very good but from there the food went down hill. The burger is topped with onion straws which were ice cold as well as the French fires that were served with it. The short ribs were served with Brussel sprouts which were also ice cold. The restaurant was busy which is why I didn't send anything back but I couldn't understand why the food was so cold if it was so busy. I think maybe they prepared certain things (I.e. onion straws, fries, Brussel sprouts) ahead of time instead of at time of order. Maybe during a less busy time of year/day it would have been better. read more

My husband called and reserved a table for 3 for my birthday. When we arrived, they sat us and took our order for our drinks. When we were ready, we ordered a brussels sprout appetizer, my husband ordered the ribeye and I ordered the filet and we got the kids fish. As requested, the appetizer and our son's meal arrived together. The brussels were really good. Shortly after the main meals arrived. As I cut into mine I noticed it was rare. I ordered medium. The server agreed it was definitely rare. I was fine with them putting it back on but not too happy since it is a $60 cut and now it will not taste as good being recooked. It took about 10 minutes and when it arrived the manager asked if I could cut in to see if it was OK. Oddly enough, it looked exactly the same. The manager said, "I think we need to put on a new steak for you"...I'm pretty patient but couldn't help replying..."you think?" So while my husband and child finished their meals the 3rd attempt was made. The server brought it over, I pushed gently on the steak and it was so squishy, at that moment we both looked at each other knowing this was rarer than the first 2 tries. I just said I wasn't hungry anymore. I didn't want anything I was upset, this was supposed to be my birthday dinner. The manager came over a few moments later and apologized and actually said, "we won't be charging for your meal and will comp the appetizer." Gee thanks for not charging us for the $120 of steak you ruined! I was surprised no one checked it before bringing it out to us. A place like this should know how to cook a steak. Side note, not once did they ever acknowledge this was a birthday either. My husband also reminded them when we arrived in case it didn't come through when he made the reservation. He asked if when we order dessert, they can please provide a candle.... needless to say we didn't get dessert (but they could have offered one to go... knowing they ruined a special occasion) HUGELY disappointed! read more

I enjoyed dinner at the mission Oak Grill on Saturday, May 3 with six others as part of a retirement celebration. Our server congratulated the retiree upon their arrival at our table, which was nice. We had reservations for a group of seven and we were seated promptly when we arrived. Our server was very attentive, repeatedly offering to come back if any member of our party was not yet ready to place their food or drink order. The table ordered crabcakes and crab rangoon to share. I skipped the appys and ordered the short ribs with mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts. The portion was generous, the short ribs were delicious as were the mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts. I believe the two of us had a cocktail called the "lovely lady" and it also was delicious. It's a version of a pomegranate martini. I will return if I am in the area again. Highly recommended. We're out again in Newburyport, MA. We asked and were told that the Mission Oak Grill was the place to for dinner. The Mission Oak Grill was a church created in 1805 and became a restaurant in 2006. The building and the dining room were restored to showcase the architecture of that period. Well done. Our waitress, Allison, treated us quite well. We were served some excellent appetizers (i.e., mussels, shrimp, calamari) and drinks. They were all delicious. Our entrees were steaming hot and served right from the kitchen and grill that was in view from the dining room. The food was cooked to perfection. We enjoyed a glass of wine with our meals. Everyone including our grandkids thought the experience was great. This was a celebration of our oldest daughter's and our wedding anniversaries. What a great dining experience. This was a great memory for all of us. The Mission Oak Grill is a gem that needs to be experienced. Don't miss an opportunity to visit Newburyport, MA. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed! Headline: 1/2 apps between 4p-6p on M-Th and Sunday. Excellent choices although before you settle on what you want, make sure to ask if they have it. Food costs are all the place so they frequently change things up. The BEST item are the Thai ribs. Fall off the bone and great flavor. Bonus points for being served over onion "strings" which were crispy and delicious. Bartender (Michelle) was very friendly and on top things! She had great suggestions for what to order and drink. I had an excellent dinner here with my father. I'd been wanting to try Mission Oak Grill for a while since I saw beautiful photos of their food on Instagram. There's a wide variety on their menu so I had a hard time deciding. I started with the French onion soup with came with a lot of cheese. The soup itself was salty and savory and I enjoyed it. Their apple cider sangria was a perfect balance of cider and wine. I don't know exactly what's in it since the menu doesn't say, but it was delicious. For dinner I had the baked haddock with comes with roasted plum tomato, baby spinach, and mashed potatoes. The portion size was large enough for me to have leftovers. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. For dessert I ordered the creme brulee which was underwhelming. I didn't get the citrus zest, berries, or whipped cream that the menu says comes with creme brulee, so it was pretty plain. This was the only thing I ordered that was disappointing. My dad ordered the s'mores brownie which was huge so he shared some with me. Huge brownie with vanilla ice cream, toasted marshmallow, graham cracker crumbs, and whipped cream. This is definitely a dessert you'll want to share because it's a large portion and very rich. My dad and I ended up not finishing the brownie. Service was a little slow but not too bad since it was relatively busy. Overall I had an enjoyable experience here and I would definitely like to come here again. read more

We live locally and go at least 3 times a year. We went last week for light dinner, bar menu. Clam chowder was potato soup with heavy dose of beacon. My wife had fish and chips which was comped by the restaurant because fish was burnt. I got short ribs empanadas, which I love, but tonight tasted like they came frozen from market Basket. It seemed our waitress had way too many tables that all sat at the same time. Other staff members help run food & drink to the tables but the communication is lacking. 2 people at our table waited over 45 minutes for a drink. We even got appetizers before our drinks came. Our waitress was very apologetic & offered to take off one drink from our bill- which I thought was odd since 2 people at our table did not receive their drinks. We waited a long time to be checked on and the waitress left quickly when some of us wanted to add a drink or food but did not get the opportunity before she ran off. We also waited a long time for food. The food and drinks were great but wait staff is spread too thin it seems and I definitely will not return with a large party. read more

Still amazing! We used to go here all the time, but haven't been for a while (for no good reason, we just tend to go more in winter and fall). We sat at the bar and bartender/server was Sara. She was personable, fun and knowledgeable. We had cocktails and the tuna tartare (which has always been our favorite) and still is. No one comes close to anything like this appetizer in the area. My fiance and I have been eyeing Mission Oak for a while now - we have always thought it looked so cool as it is in an old church! We finally took the plunge and made a reservation for date night. I am so glad we did as we have found a new go-to spot in Newburyport! They have a great menu with some upscale items to choose from. My only complaint is that their vegetarian items (while they do have some) are a bit slim if you aren't in the mood for super heavy mac and cheese. I went with a dinner-sized salad which was phenomenal, but would love to see more options on the menu. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere inside is very cool. As far as Newburyport dining goes, I would say the prices are right on par with the other options in town. We are looking forward to coming back again in the future! read more
