This is a really cool place and the people who work here are great. However, if it's more than just a few minutes for you to get there, don't bother going in the evening outside of summer. It's always filled with individual people sitting at all the tables that seat 4, so there's no way to get a spot. If you have to drive anything more than 15 minutes to get there, be prepared to turn right back around and find somewhere else. Stopped by this location on a Sunday morning for a quick drink. As a person who doesn't drink coffee, I grabbed the iced chai tea. I found it to be incredibly pleasant, with a good amount of milk and cinnamon to satiate my needs for this visit. In looking at the atmosphere, I'm intrigued to come back and try to study here. The location is small, but stuffed with squashy seating and benches. I didn't quite enjoy the hip-hop music going on and am overall confused by its addition to this cafe, but feel that this has potential for a study location. Price was fair $3-4 for a non-coffee drink. They did have a small collection of small baked goods. No coffee beans for sale for anybody looking for it. read more

Black Crown was one of the first places I came to after moving to Tucson a few years ago. Their coffee and tea selection is pretty big, so there's something for everyone and the prices are reasonable. They do have wifi but I'm not likely to sit around and work here since it can be a little dark and dusty, especially if you try to sit in their loft are upstairs. As someone who likes to spend a few hours working in a coffee shop, I'd recommend this as a place to stop and pick up coffee on Speedway but perhaps keep traveling down the road to some other shops if you want a place to comfortably work in. The staff are friendly and they do offer a rewards punch card if you frequent often enough to rack up enough purchases for a free drink. read more

I have always gone to this place to study, staff was amazing except the people I encountered today who kicked me out for not buying a drink within the 10 minutes I was there. Never have I ever been so disrespected at a place. The lady with tattoos and glasses told me I had to leave if I weren't to buy a drink right away. I tried to explain that I would buy a drink after I was done on the assignment I was on. She said she didn't care and made me leave. She was extremely rude when I was very polite and trying to explain myself. I was quietly sitting and studying while minding my own business. I have never ever had this issue with any other person and I buy something EVERYTIME I come in which has never been right away. I will not be returning. read more

Black Crown is our go-to for good coffee and conversation. Inside, you will find a lot of students, and more up in the loft. Outside you will find quite a few bikers and other free thinkers. Prices are pretty good, if you get a Toddy (really good cold brew coffee) you can have 20 ounces for $3, and refills are only $1. Great recipe for long stays inside, studying, or out on the patio, talking philosophy. Or motorcycle maintenance. Or the philosophy of motorcycle maintenance. Whatever displaces your vessel. There is a wonderful eclectic crowd of people, with a wonderfully eclectic range of drinks to match. Coffee is roasted by hand by the owner and you can even buy beans here. Baristas and baristos are generally friendly. It's open till midnight most nights which is nice if you like to enjoy the beautiful Tucson evenings. If you want a bite to eat, the bowling alley is right across the street and has surprisingly good food at decent prices. Just be careful if you want to play Frogger across Speedway! This is a great place to have a non-pretentious cup of coffee. read more

Not my cup of tea (or coffee) really. That said it's a very popular place apparently and the black widow latte I had was good. But I went in mid afternoon and the place was jammed inside and outside even in August weather. I did find a bar seat upstairs looking out to Speedway but it was an absolute sauna up there w the outside temp and being upstairs and all the people inside. Doubt I go back. I've stopped by this place a couple of times a month since moving to the neighborhood and this place has perhaps my favorite place to get an artisan latte in Tucson. . Pretty unique building they have with plenty of place and tables to come in and sit to work on homework or other projects. But anyway, for their coffee, I can only speak to their espresso. They have a wide variety of their own specialty drinks, but I stick with the traditional latte. They've also got really dank pastries that I am pretty sure are from a local bakery, and also some familiar selections from Costco. read more

Listen ... the coffee is good, so I'm told, and they are nice about giving refills and it's a good place to study ... BUT ... If you want to do some major second hand SMOKING, go here because this place literally pipes in smokers' cigarette fumes in one of its 3 doors, some of its patrons parade around puffing e-cigarette fumes, and the workers and management have a 1970's mentality that smoking is a right so if you complain who cares ... In fact, the employees' attitude about smokers' fumes that come rushing in through the back doors and front doors is JUST AS BAD as the fact that smokers congregate immediately outside each door so that when the door opens the built-up plume of smoke rushes into the room forcing you to smoke 3-4 cigarettes at once. read more

Literally one of my favorite coffee joints to go to when I'm in Tucson. I love all the options they give and the coffee's are good quality my favorite is the breast milk ice latte and for hot I'd be the black widow. They have the perfect blend of sweet and creamy flavors definitely would recommend to check this place out if you're visiting. read more

This was my last cafe stop as I hopped around Tucson looking for study spots. It's a little off from U of A but it was nice to see it not overrun by college students. There was a diverse crowd there, ranging from people studying to people just chatting. The lighting is pretty dim so it wasn't conducive to studying for me but if you had laptop work, there were plenty of outlets! Also, I sorta got addicted to their apple studel, FYI :) read more

This is one of my favourite coffee shops! I always make a point to go when I'm in town. The drinks are delicious and there's several fun ones to try. Now this is a coffee shop! Great ambiance, locals hanging out studying, crocheting, friends talking, comfortable seating, free wifi, community event posted, super delicious pastries and great coffee being served. I stuck to my usual cup of joe which was nicely roasted, in house by the way. I would highly recommend the apple crisp muffin! The old Safehouse site is reborn as Black Crown and it's pretty good! It is a great place for a coffee shop, with outdoor seating (for smoking of course) and great upstairs lounging. It stays fairly busy here with students, people hanging, and of course bikers. Coffee seems inexpensive and tasted very good. My friend enjoyed a good cup of hot cocoa with whipped cream. The ONLY place to get a real brewed hot Chai Tea. The way it is supposed to be done. Enough of the 'practical' stuff, on to the real reason to visit Safehou... err... Black Monarchy Caffeine Club... whatever. This place will allow you to experience some of the best people watching Tucson has to offer. It doesn't matter how many times they change the name, how many layers of grime are added or removed, or how annoying the latest influx of rebellious youth are. This place has great hours and tons of seating space with outlets. It has a little bit of a spooky atmosphere (perhaps because it's Halloween themed at the moment?), but is definitely unique. It also has a cool upstairs area that looks like an attic. I would recommend checking it out! read more

When I left Seattle one of the hardest things for me to find was an awesome coffee shop that roast their own beans and had amazing coffee to drink. Then I found black crown and I was truly impressed I am obsessed with this coffee shop. I love the atmosphere I love that when I walk in the barista's know me they know my drink they just asked me if I want one or two. I tell everyone I can about this place I have been coming here ever since I moved back. I was down in Tucson for a wedding and needed coffee for my drive back to Phoenix. This place came recommended by someone who lived there, and I must say I was not disappointed. The cold brew coffee had great flavor at a low price. The atmosphere seemed like it was very chill, with a lot of students studying and others engaged in conversations. Don't get me wrong... Tucson needs more late night coffee shops ever since Shot in the Dark closed down. However, the truth is they are only really good for a place to look cool. The quality of their beverages don't even place on the charts of quality shops in Tucson. After going for a casual business meeting & ordering a Large Iced Chai Tea, both myself and my associate were thoroughly displeased by not only the service and lack of knowledge regarding drinks on the menu. The beverage consisted of nearly 85% milk and lost nearly all flavor intended by the ordered product. Went on a Wednesday at 9am. There were 0 college kids (a huge bonus in my book) and plenty of seats. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had the toddy (cold brew coffee), which was strong and tasty, and a mocha with soy milk which was delicious. They also have almond milk. The benches were not as comfortable for hours of sitting as some other places (ahem cartel), but they also have some chairs which I will try next time. And of course there is the requisite wi-fi.
