I'm surprised to see the low reviews for this bus tour as we had a great time. We took an early afternoon trip, which left promptly on time from the bus depot. The bus was very nice and our driver/guide was great - she was very talkative and told us so much about the park, wildlife, and nature. She also did a great job spotting all the wildlife and taking plenty of time to allow us to watch the highlights, including bears, moose, birds, and the beautiful scenery. Unfortunately there's an early turn-around point due to a bridge that is being replaced, but we still felt that we got to see more than enough. Highly recommend. read more

Just got off the bus driven by Jason. Great tour of Denali for our first visit to Alaska. We were on the 11 am tour but still managed to see caribou, a bull moose, a wolverine, ptarmigans, and a ground squirrel that nosed for the bus! We did not see Mt McKinley, we weren't one of the lucky 30% unfortunately. Jason was a great narrator and guide and a very safe and accommodating driver. read more

We went on the early 4:50am tour yesterday with our guide, Jennifer. She was very knowledgeable and wove a wonderful presentation of the history of the park, the flora and fauna, sustainability, and her personal journey. We saw grizzly bears, dall sheep, golden eagles, ptarmigans, red fox, snowshoe hares, ground squirrels, etc. We also had a nice clear view of Denali (Mt McKinley). It was an experience of a lifetime! Warning: This tour company does not honor cancellations, even if a wildfire blocks the road to the park. We were turned around because of a wildfire and had to go back to Fairbanks. We called to cancel the reservation and no one picked up. The next day, we called during business hours and they said that because the road eventually opened up, we had to keep the reservation, even though it would've been impossible for us to make it in time. They provided no empathy whatsoever, and refused to modify the reservation to another time or date. They were told by National Park Services at 10:30am day of that operations would resume as normal (we received no type of communication or updates from the company during this). The road would be single lane for us coming from the north with extra delays due to fire control and monitoring, which seems a strain and distraction on resources for a recreational activity that refused to be rescheduled due to corporate greed by Aramark that runs the tour company. If you are on a more limited schedule or visiting from outside the state, we suggest doing a different activity or booking with a different group rather than booking with this company that will not provide you any help if there is any issue including natural disaster like a forest fire which is very common in Alaska. read more

This bus tour was scheduled for us on our cruisetour package, and was unchangeable. We boarded the bus early (around 8ish), and were still rubbing the sleep our of our eyes when we set off into the park. Motor coaches are not allowed in the park, so we were crammed in school busses. These things barely fit high school teenagers, they were expected to fit full grown adult males over 6feet tall. Our guide (Mary, I think her name was) talked of the some of the history of the park and took us to a ranger cabin on the Savage Cabin Interpretive Trail. Make sure you're fully covered with mosquito repellant because we were a walking buffet up to the cabin. We didn't go to the end of the paved road because of the landslide. After crossing the Savage River and passing the Savage River station, the bus took us two and a half more miles to our final stopping point. There, a native interpreter spoke more about the young leaving the village than how the history of Denali was intertwinded with his culture. Our total distance from the Denali Bus Depot to the point where we turned around and headed back was less than 17 miles. read more

Viewing the animals was great but we were unable to understand our tour operator, bus was freezing and Holland put our group on a 5 am bus. We did not learn anything on the tour as the operator and/or system was impossible to understand. Blah. Blah. Blah. Is what we heard for 5.5 hours. . We all said this a the beginning of the tour and he tried correct but then just went on without any being able to understand him. All these together made our tour less than pleasant. read more

This Denali Tundra Wilderness Bus tour was just alright. In fact...my entire experience and explorations throughout Denali National Park overall fell flat. There really wasn't anything monumental about being here. Regardless, as part of the Denali NP voyage goes...it's pretty much a MUST-DO to take this all day/8 hour bus tour within and throughout Denali. And the reason I say this is because if you're really interested in getting into the heart of Denali...private passenger vehicles are only allowed access through the first 13 miles of Denali Park Road. But...it's with this Bus Tour, the Tundra Wilderness Tour that'll navigate you to Mile 62 of Denali Park Road, which by the way is the only navigable road to take to traverse around the park. Since I discovered so little to do within Denali...it's sort of imperative to take this Tundra Wilderness Tour even though I found my memories to be quite ordinary when I reflect back. It was $162.50 for this day tour. I booked months in advance and had my choice of whatever day and time I desired. I booked simply online at reservedenali.com/tours-transits/the-denali-tour-experience/. The departure point was easy to find. Right at the entrance to the park is the Denali Bus Depot. Just find a parking spot and check-in inside the lobby/building. Btw, this welcome building sells drinks, snacks, souvenirs and supplies which was accommodative. But keep in mind the Tour Bus will provide you a full lunch and drinks the moment you board. So...unless you're desperately hungry or need something extra...no need to buy anything. Also, there are restrooms here before starting the voyage. I was surprised. Waiting in line first thing in the morning...my bus driver was 20 minutes late. That was unusual. But she did eventually arrive and I guess all was forgiven. I was traveling alone. When I did board the bus...I had to find a seat next to a stranger, which eventually would be my "buddy" for the next 8 hours. Most visitors come with family and the bus is 2x2 seating. But for me I sat next to a nice lady who was friendly and was traveling by herself as well. We did exchange stories throughout the day. I sat in the isle seat. I didn't like this. I would have much more preferred to be by the window to at least take decent pictures. I was constantly changing the position I was sitting in and moving my head to view outside. If you can, window seats are better. But overall, along the 62 mile journey into Denali, the scenery wasn't anything special. So...I really wasn't missing out on any action. Along the tour and voyage...I'd say the bus stopped 7 - 8 times where us passengers had a chance to get out, stretch our legs, take photos of the surrounding landscape and stop for restrooms. But...the scenery wasn't anything to be proud of. And...regardless that my visit was on a very cloudy day...it didn't matter. The mountains were situated so far off into the distance, I never really had fulfillment or any moments where I truly connected with nature. Each stop was for maybe 15 minutes. There were plenty of bathroom breaks. No need to worry. I will say lunch was good, a turkey sandwich, chips, snacks, beef jerky, a bottled water. I was fine with the food they provided. Here's what really frustrated me. Throughout the trip, the driver mentioned anytime anyone sees wildlife they should call out "STOP" and we'd pause for picture taking. The amount of times people on my tour screamed to "STOP" it seemed like every 10 minutes! Okay you'd think well great there's all this wildlife. But...NOT REALLY! WHAT A JOKE! The wildlife were located so far away you needed binoculars to view them. In fact...the driver had a camcorder lens where she zoomed onto the wildlife and then used the tv's scattered throughout the bus for everyone to participate in watching. And hilariously, people were really taking pictures of the tv screens! Crazy!!! But what good is seeing an animal on a screen? I could do this at home. Plus, being trapped on the bus and not breathing in fresh air while appreciating wildlife roaming free was disappointing. So...the "STOP" and "STOP" and "STOP" calls were endless throughout the day. We saw every animal imaginable but they were tiny specs set in the distance. And don't even bother trying to use your phone to take a photo. It's pointless. Finally arriving at Mile 62...this was the most accessible point to view famous Denali Peak. But...Denali was still so so far away and it was once again meaningless to even attempt a picture. Plus with the mostly cloudy day, this Mile 62 didn't really stand out whatsoever. I guess then, that was the end of the trip and it was time to return back to the Bus Depot. As we did make our way back towards the start, I came to the acceptance and realization that I wasn't going to discover opportunities to be inspired by Alaska's wilderness out here in Denali...which ultimately I was desperately yearning for to happen. I highly recommend you do NOT book Aramark's Denali bus tour. We had a terrible experience with the company and with the tour. I booked with a live person because we needed to be on an earlier bus tour to get on our 4pm train north (there's only one train a day.) They noted that in our reservation. Day before the tour when they release tickets, they were for 10:30am. It's a 5-1/2 to 6 hour tour. No way we could get back, get our luggage and get to the train. I was on the phone trying to make the change for at least 3 hours. They were able to rebook two tickets to 8am. But doing so forfeited the other two tickets. So we are now out $290 and only two can go on the tour. The tour bus was a school bus, uncomfortable, hard to see out the windows. Animals so far away the driver used a video camera to show us goats on tiny screens. Not a whole lot to see for 5-1/2 hours. I appealed through email and phone calls for a refund of the forfeited tickets after the trip and their policy is no refunds. Thanks, Aramark. Never again. read more

Of the three bus tours leaving Denali, this one's the best value for time and money in my opinion ! A few pointers - they provide snacks and water on this bus ride but I'd still recommend bringing your own water as well - highly highly recommend getting a pair of binoculars especially if you're looking to get great views of bears etc. - this is going to be a long long drive (no absolute doubt) but at the end of it , you'll have the opportunity to get some absolutely stunning shots of the Denali landscape and interact with the wildlife in close proximity read more

We had Joe who was knowledgeable, skilled on the roads, and shared a lot about the park. Enjoyed his humor -he was very direct about animal sightings being by chance, and he did a great job of spotting and stopping for them, although most were very far away. If I had done my research, I would have brought binoculars as most animals were dots or difficult to spot on our tour, specifically the bears and caribou. We did see a golden eagle which was magnificent. Also saw a caribou in the road which passed our bus to the delight of all the passengers. It was a 5 hour trip with the majority of the time sitting but the bus is comfortable enough and you do get out to stretch your legs at a few stops which should be taken advantage of. I am basing this review on my experience today 7/13/24. I booked this tour through Alaska Tour and Travel, not directly through Denali Tundra Tours. We did not stay in any of the 4 major lodges, but outside of the area in Healy, so we were to drive ourselves to the pickup location of the tour. We did not get any information from the tour company in advance letting us know the exact time or other details of our tour. I made a phone call to find out early the morning of our tour and was told to be at the Denali Park bus lot 1/2 hour in advance of our 1:20 tour. We Google the location of the parking lot and realize when we get to the location that it is not correct, it sent us to a rest area. I could not find any information or a phone number for the tour directly, (the number I called in the morning had no answer) so I called Alaska Tour and Travel and they were able to get us to the correct location just in time for the tour. Very helpful. Because of the mix-up with Google maps, we end up last in line. We are ok with this, thinking we will be in the back of the bus. Ok, no problem . When we get on, the only seating left is for my husband and myself to sit way far apart, about 9 rows separating us. I'm really not ok with this as we paid quite a bit for this tour. Some people were trying to help out by switching seats but it all became a disaster when we felt like we were imposing on and inconveniencing everyone by this move. People were complaining and we were humiliated. My point is this. The tour company needs to leave at LEAST a couple of seats per tour for these types of situations. Nobody wants to pay this much for a tour and not be able to experience it with the only person you're traveling with. Packing these buses to capacity is not ideal. We were unable to take this tour after paying for it. We honestly just had to get off the bus because we felt like we had done something wrong. I am genuinely sad that we came all the way to Alaska and were unable to see the park in it's entirety. We just needed to get off the bus so people would be happy. So much complaining and I get it...they too were inconvenienced. It just felt unbelievably personal and miserable. I am asking the tour company to please consider this in the future. It cost us a lot of money and a once in a lifetime opportunity that we can't get back. read more

Loading in at 6:45am for an 8-hour bus tour with Tundra Wilderness Tours was absolutely 100% worth it, thanks to Jen, our tour guide. She's not only an expert storyteller, but an incredible driver + guide with 20+ years of experience, setting expectations for the tour and managing uncertainty with ease. Her driving skills are also top notch, deftly handling unpaved roads with no guardrail, steep drops right off the roadside, hairpin turns, etc. Her anecdotes were fascinating, and helped create a much fuller picture of daily Alaskan life both in + out of the park. If you have the ability to walk/hike at 8mi I implore you to not go in this tour. If you have a car drive to mile 15 (farthest you can go on the park road) and grab a shuttle bus (green) from there. If you don't have a car just get one from the bus depot or the visitor center. This will allow you the ability to get off and explore the area instead of just sitting on a bus with no flexibility. The bus tour it self was god awful our driver was the least informative person I've ever met. The information be provided us was less comprehensive then what you would get from a caption on photo in the visitor center. His only qualification was that he had CDL to drive the bus and he could spell "stop" kid you not. Also on the bus only good seats are on the window, if you get stuck in the aisle you are screwed and probably would get more use of lighting your money on fire. The bus provides you water and snacks but nothing spectacular. It's just cheese puffs, unsalted trail mix, turkey jerky, and a brownie brittle bag. Please please, if you like hiking or are in slightly good shape at least hike the park road so you can take the scenery. The green shuttles run by the park will pick you up once you get tired and you can ride them to rest then get off and do another hike. Also the free maps and brochures at the visitor center has more information then what the bust tour can provides. read more

We were off at Denali with Holland America and took the tundra wilderness tour. Our tour guide was Sean and he was great, he had so much knowledge in his brain that he shared with us it was amazing you think he was a college professor. We saw grizzlies Dall sheep and so many Caribou we couldn't count. He taught us so much I feel I went through a workshop on nature in Denali. If I go back to Dinali 10 more times I will take this tour 10 more times. It was great and thank you Sean four you're good jokes and good information. read more

Whew. This tour may have been a victim of circumstance for me. I had spent the previous day, 8 hours on a (nice) train, and I wasn't really all that jacked to spend 8 hours of a cramped and hungry/thirsty school bus the next. We saw wildlife, sure. We survived the polychrome roads, sure. But it's too long, I would recommend the shorter version even if you only save yourself an hour. Our tour information gloated "so the rest of the afternoon in Denali is yours to do with what you please". There is no rest of the afternoon. We were picked up at 10 til 7:00 in the morning (ugh) and dropped off at 3:45 in the afternoon. As I mentioned, the bus was severely uncomfortable. I'm 5'11" and had no leg room. There is a snack box provided and one (1) small bottle of water. You are in a hostage situation here, really. OK, seeing bears was cool. Caribou, sheep, both cool. Even saw a wolf. But the time investment is significant here, and it is hard. read more

Any wildlife you spot is so far away it looks like a speck. Our bus driver/ tour guide prattled on incessantly about everything and anything and made the journey annoying. Then he would pull over to the side of the road for 20 minutes to point out a Dall sheep or a caribou a mile away. The mountains were beautiful though, but the ride not worth the $$$. If I went again, I would take a shuttle bus, get off at a particularly beautiful spot, watch and wait for critters. Just not the place to see wildlife close up. read more

This was a pretty great tour through an amazing place. For the most part the bus is comfortable with one exception. The windows for the bus cut into your sight line due to the metal holding the upper and lower panes in place. I either had to scrunch down or sit really tall to avoid looking directly at a metal bar. Sometimes the drivers seem too determined to keep the schedule even if we were looking at wildlife. In one instance we saw a bear with two cubs but had to leave after 5 minutes to keep to the schedule. We ended up getting back early because we didn't see any other wildlife the rest of the trip. We rode a couple of different buses and liked both drivers. They had great knowledge about the history, geography and geology of the park. They did a great job navigating a road that would terrify a normal driver. We rode to Eilson visitor center and went on a hike. If you really want to see the park get on an early bus and take a later one back. You don't get a lot of time off the bus in any one location. We left on the 11 AM bus and got back at 9 PM. If I could have left earlier I would have. read more

Given the fact you're on a modified school bus with comfy coach seats, this was a good experience. The tour guide was friendly, positive and thoughtful. Be prepared that you'll be getting a constant, kindly stated, constant refrain of earnest 'preservation' messaging. The vistas are unparalleled. Great trip except not a single Covid precaution in place. Bus is at max capacity, no masks. I was traveling with children who were obviously too young to be vaccinated. I called before paying over a thousand dollars and was promised Covid precautions (social distancing and masks as per the website and National Parks rules). Bus was running at capacity, bus driver refused to put on a mask ("he has asthma so doesn't like to wear a mask") and that really set the tone for the trip. We weren't offered a refund so we went but listening to fellow passengers cough their way through the National Park is not really how I wanted to spend the end of my vacation. read more

Our only complaint was the hurry up and get back in the bus every time you stopped. Now I'm sure they are trying to keep a schedule, BUT, we paid a few hundred dollars for this trip, not to mention traveling thousands of miles , spending thousands of dollars to get here. We got the last Tundra Wilderness Tour of the season in late September (the shortened Teklanika 6-hour tour), so the entire park was getting ready to go into hibernation for the winter. This tour is supposed to get to mile 30. However, due to snow and bad road conditions, I think we only got to Savage River at mile 14. Logistics: I never received final email confirmation of the departure time or finalized location. I ended up calling the office to confirm, but the staff was very friendly and helpful. We left from the Wilderness Access Center. Since they were getting ready to close, there wasn't much there. No food, indoor bathrooms (had porta potties instead), and most of the staff seemed more interested in packing everything up than dealing with tourists (although who could blame them). The park: Absolutely beautiful, even in late September. This tour is the only option to even get into the park, so although I'm sure there are better options in the summer time, if you're coming late in the year, take the tour. The tour: Our guide was fantastic. He told stories of his bear encounters, some personal background, history of the park, and pointed out things to look at. He was pretty determined to get us to see some wildlife. As a result of his passion, we got to see two grizzlies, which is probably a pretty big deal considering we were barely into the park. We stopped at some of the visitor centers and at the river to do a 15-minute hike. Since we didn't get to go in too far, the whole tour lasted only about 3 hours. The sad part: You get a lunch box as part of the tour. The tour organizers don't hand out lunch boxes, but instead, leave a lunch box on the bus seats. When it was time to get off the bus for a short hike, we left our lunch boxes stacked on our seats. When we got back, our lunch boxes were gone. Yeah, super disappointed that someone on the bus stole our lunch boxes. Later, we learned that there weren't enough lunch boxes to go around, which resulted in the stealing. Luckily, I fear starvation so I always pack extra snacks. Otherwise, I'm pretty certain we would have starved to death on the tour without having anything to eat. Good thing I came prepared. read more

Gosh, I don't know where to begin! This is definitely a not to miss tour! Our tour guide, Jason Blalock, was the best! We were so fortunate to have his as our guide. He has been with the company for 11 years and you can tell he really really LOVES his job. He beamed when he talked about the park. He gave us history and information on the wildlife as well as the terrain. Yes, he had a captive audience, but we loved every moment of it. Because of him, we were lucky enough to see Denali before the clouds enveloped it. We saw eagles, bears, caribou, Dahl sheep and moose. It was so incredible! If I can give a zero star, I would. Skipped at All Cost - especially with teen. My teenage son considered this tour to be the lowest point of all his vacations. You would be on a modified school bus for 8 hours with little time to walk in the park. While you would be very likely to see the big four (bear, moose, caribou, and Dall sheep), they would be so far away that I really fail to see the point/excitement. And if you are the unfortunate one with seats that have wheel bumps that has extremely restricted legroom, you are even more screwed. The bus leaves at the visitor center which don't have marked lines. And the guide would let the tour group boards first. The outcome was that even though my family was the first ones waiting but being the last one boarding. The guide added little/no value - nothing that you wouldn't be able to gather from the Visitor Center. read more

We took the Tundra Wilderness tour on August 28 with Cindy, she was our bus driver and guide. She was excellent! Very informative and knowledgeable. Her stories were funny and very interesting and she has amazing voice to tell them. It started snowing that day for the first time, not much, but despite hard road conditions in some points, she took us all the way to mile 53. The tour guides really do well to connect you with the wildlife and surroundings. A tip - avoid the packaged lunches that the Denali resorts supply from ARAMARK. We were expecting more from this tour. I believe if our guide would have been more informative and interesting, then the tour would have been better. Due to the weather, we didn't see very many animals. Also, for the price of the tour we felt it was very rushed. Part of the problem is that we took the tour as part of a Land and Sea Tour with Norwegian. Our other guide instructed the driver that we had to be back at a certain time which put pressure on the bus driver guide. I would like to return to Denali when I am not on such a tight timeline. read more

Get a seat on the RIGHT side of the bus (meaning, not on the same side as the driver, but make sure you sit on the side with the door). You'll know what I mean when the tour starts. The visibility is better on the right side of the bus due to the constantly changing tundra climate. read more

Originally, the thought behind booking this tour was that a narrated tour would offer a better understanding of the park and animals versus the shuttle, which supposedly offers only transporation into and out of the park, but we quickly realized this tour wasn't right for us, not to say it might not work out for others though. We apparently didn't do a good job with research as we had thought there would be time to do some hiking, but you pretty much stay on the bus the entire time, except for bathroom breaks every 90 minutes. Start time of the tour was subject to change and they pushed our start time by about 2.5 hours, which didn't allow us enough time to do the hike we wanted to after the tour anymore. Our bus also had a microphone issue where half the bus could not hear the guide, so we had to pull over 3 miles into the tour and wait for a replacement bus to come out in 30-60 minutes. Compared to the shuttle that we took the next day for much much cheaper than this tour, I found the shuttle experience much more worthwhile. We can come and go as we please, the driver was very engaging and talked a lot about Denali, and we had a lot of great spotters on the shuttle that sighted many animals. But talking to some other folks while we were hiking or waiting for return shuttles, we were very lucky with the shuttle as their drivers didn't really talk at all and most people kept to themselves, so sightings were not as common. Looks like the shuttle may be a hit or miss, but the tour bus will definitely offer a narrated experience. Depending on what you're trying to achieve, the tour bus may / may not be right for you. read more

The question if you would see animals and what kind cannot have a certain answer. It is not up to us, but up to the wild animals. We were lucky that day. We saw a mommy grizzlies with her twin cubs, 14 caribous, three moose, lots of birds, and Dall sheep. It was even snowing in Chrome Peak, which was wonderful. The mountain ranges are amazing. I do not give this tour full five stars because of two reasons. The tour could be shorten to six hours. More than enough. Our driver was very pleasant and informative, but she talked constantly and some of her stories were simply stories. I am not interested in it. The information about nature and the animals is super important but the stories about her neighbors and workers who climbed a tree because of bears are nonsense. Ok everyone says this is a must do. The first 3-4 hours is pretty cool. We did see a few animals- actually see real bears, but this tour is entirely too long. Our guide was darling. People on the bus were nice. It is just WAY too long. Was so glad we knew to bring our own food and water. Make sure to bring a camera with a telephoto lense. If you like sitting on a school bus and bouncing on a dirt road looking at beautiful scenery if you have a window seat this tour is for you. If you had rather do something else with your precious time and money while in Alaska go as far as your own vehicle will allow or ride the green bus to the end and back. Loved the guided tour.. spotted like 10 bears, caribou, dall sheep, moose, .. loved the tundra view.. the 7-8 went away fast
