Would love to be able to review the beer or food but this is my absolute pet peeve -- tons of open tables inside and out, and we waited 10 minutes just now at the host stand for anyone to acknowledge us, then were asked if we had a reservation, then told it would be an hour and a half wait. This review is for the spirits and beer - we didn't order any food. The distiller makes some unique beverages. The Bierschnapps...think of Austrian schnapps with a beer taste. They also have garden spirits, which are essentially schnapps albeit potent schnapps (90 proof). Unfortunately, you couldn't order the garden spirits at the bar, but you could buy a bottle. My brother had the Marzen - yep, tasted like Oktoberfest. Bartenders were attentive and did a great job explaining the different spirits. Cool place! read more

We had skipped lunch and arrived to black flannel around 4pm as they were just opening. We were seated very quickly and were able to place drink orders asap! The appetizers were a little small, but good. The Bavarian pretzels are enough to share with 2 people. The decorations are modern and cozy. The artwork on the bathroom doors is impressive! My wife and I did a "day date" at Black Flannel. I had tried one of their beers previously at another spot and had to visit the brewery. Suffice to say that if you appreciate European style beers, this place has it dialed in. The Scotch Ale was so rich and full of delicious flavor and the Kolsch was also legit. My wife tried their house brand of vodka in a dirty martini and it was very good vodka. However, the glass it came in was one of those 1920's champagne style glasses. Very small for the price. Which brings me to the food. Ugh. This is why they get three stars. We had two apps, beer cheese and pretzels. The beer cheese was bland and had an odd texture. Almost like one of the cheeses was "riced" into the mix. The pretzels were $8 for two, small pretzels that were just ok. The dipping sauces were very good but for two four inch pieces of bread, I would rather have bought another beer. The service was friendly and attentive. Great people here. If you want some of the best beer, this place has it. But skip the food. The menu is short and uninspired and from what I could tell watching orders come out, small portions for top dollar. read more

Solid Beer and Good Food for a great price point. Stopped by here with my family for our first meal after arriving in the area for the week/ weekend. We went on a Wednesday night and the place was absolutely popping. Very glad we made an impromptu reservation before arriving. When we arrived (a little before our reservation) we were seated fairly quickly. Once we got to our table our drink orders and food were taken shortly afterwards. There is also a back yard/ outdoor area where there is extra seating and where they hold events. For drinks, we tried a few different things. I had an 8oz of the Imagine Zero and an 8oz of the 12 Hour Sour, my dad got a 16 oz of Rito's Lament, and my Brother had an 8oz beer and two tasters. For the price point, this beer felt like a steal. $ 4.50 for an 8oz beer sounds crazy, especially compared to beer prices in Boston and San Francisco (cities I am more familiar with). The quality of the beer is pretty standard - nothing awful but nothing to write home about. For food, we got a few things. To start we got an order of wings and fried pickle spears. For main meals I got a double patty smash burger, my mom got a single patty smash burger, my dad got the chicken Caesar salad, and my brother got the fish and chips. The apps were both really good - the wings were served whole ( drum and flat connected) and were cooked perfectly. The house buffalo sauce was nice and paired nicely with the ranch. The fried pickle spears were perfection - the beer batter was shatteringly crispy. This was definitely a highlight for me. My burger was also really really good - I felt it could've been smashed a smidge more but that's just me being nitpicky. The house fries that were served along with them were also done just right. All in all, my experience at Black Flannel was great. I'd definitely recommend giving this place a visit if you find yourself in the area. 4/5 read more

Yesterday evening my partner, Matt and I decided to head over to Black Flannel for a craft libation and meal. We decided we'd sit at the bar before we arrived knowing it would likely be busy on a warm Friday evening. Upon arrival we found two seats at the bar and sat down. No one greeted us (no big deal as they were busy). There were two bartenders working the bar; we grabbed the QR quote off the menu and started to mull over what we wanted. A few moments passed, still no greeting, no water dropped off and no acknowledgment we were there. Matt and the bartender on our side of the counter made eye contact several times and he even attempted to wave down the server to be ignored. We decided to patiently wait, as I too work in customer service. The bartender came over to the patrons sitting immediately to out left and took their food order (this is easily after 10 minutes of no acknowledgment) and still did not attempt to greet us or thank us for our patience. Not wanting to cause a scene we got up and departed. Matt politely spoke to the hostess at the front door and explained what happened and what we would not be returning. Black Flannel, please do better. Being busy is okay and in fact makes our hearts happy that you're booming and doing well, but please acknowledge customers. We had no problem waiting for an additional 10 minutes had someone simply greet us, bring us a glass of water and let us know you were busy and would be with us when you had time, instead, we watched the bartender jerk around behind the counter when he could have been more attentive to all your patrons that he was supposed to be taking care of. I can assure you, we will not be back. As locals we're happy to support other locally owned establishments. read more

We stumbled upon the Black Flannel Brewing Restaurant after going to see a movie. Many people were sitting outside, so we decided to dine there. Hubby got a smash burger and wished he'd doubled up on the burger. He was quite pleased with it and super happy he'd chosen to add bacon as it was really great tasting. He also got a non-alcoholic drink which was yummy and only $5. I chose the confit duck legs with waffles and bacon maple syrup. So good. I'd have chosen the syrup on the side next time as it was drenched. But oh so good!!! Highly recommend. Had half for dinner and finished it the next day. Every bite was mmmmm. We bought two donuts to take home. Packaged beautifully, but they were not good. We got a passionfruit one that the taste was wonderful and it came with a real flower on it - so pretty. But eating it was not great. It was so heavy it wasn't worth it. The frosting was yummy, but I can't recommend this. The 4 stars is because of the donuts. Our server, Aubrie, was wonderful. Disappointed. We had the Charcuterie board, sashimi peppers, "pickle sampler", mussels, and the burger. Also the Vermont Heavy beer. And melted chocolate chip cookie and chocolate torte. The Charcuterie Board and Burger Portions were very small so consequently overpriced. Sashimi peppers portions were generous and tasty. We ordered the "pickle sampler" after seeing the how small the Charcuterie Board (for 4) was but turns out it was picklED veggies, not pickles. There are pickle options on the menu so we thought it was a sample of those. It was a generous portion but not what we were expecting. The mussels were good and so was the beer, and looks like a good selection of beer and other drinks. The online menu says that there are vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options available but we came to understand this just means some modifications to what is on the menu not options not listed and unfortunately they were out of the pasta that one of our party was hoping for as a vegetarian option. We were seated quickly on arrival at 8pm but at a table that was in an area behind a small kneewall that was close to the kitchen and a service area with bright fluorescent lighting and noise from the kitchen and service area. Not the ambience we were hoping for. There were a number of open tables in the main dining area that remained empty through the kitchen closing. We just assumed they were all booked or we would have asked to be moved. The main dining area and bar had a good vibe. Dirty plates remained on the table through the meal even after we stacked and put at the end of the table. The server was friendly and mostly attentive, but I'd recommend booking an earlier reservation if you don't want to be rushed with the kitchen closing. Twenty minutes after being seated we were told the kitchen closes at 9 and needed to order (it was a Saturday and the website said it closed at 10). We had ordered drinks and appetizers and were waiting for our server to come back to take our dinner order. We hadn't intended to delay anything, so the way the server put it it to us was kind of off putting. When booking we checked the box that it was a special occasion and indicated it was a birthday in the comments. We didn't really expect anything and nothing was said or done, but the deserts were delicious. I wouldn't recommend for anything other than going for beer or drinks. We drove out from Burlington hoping to try a new place for a change but the food and general dining experience fell short of our expectations. read more

We've been recommending this place to our friends ever since and they have all been pleased. Visited for the first time last week. Definitely was not expecting how large of a brewpub it was, given that it flies a bit under the radar for VT breweries. Came here for drinks and had the pretzel sticks on a Friday afternoon. The pretzel sticks were piping hot and the dips were good. The beer was very solid. Had the festbier and dark lager. Both were well executed for the style. Overall prices were reasonable. We'll have to come back and try some other offerings and food. read more

From out of town - a friend took us out to dinner. What a great place! Interesting dishes with lots of variation and things for people who might not want meat. Attentive staff and great service. Wow! Great service, fast and friendly. Smallish menu but executed well. The smash and black bean burgers were delicious. Pickled veggies over mixed greens and French fries were perfection. Caution about the spicy chips as they were too hot for most of out party and are quite strong jalapeño. First time to Black Flannel yesterday. Can't speak to the beer but the PEI mussels in clam broth were the single best mussels I have ever eaten! Plump, moist, and super delicious. The bread was crispy but it had fat too much butter on it. Would order it without butter on the toast next time because it just wasn't necessary. Hubby had the burrata salad it looked good. The Caesar salad, with added salmon, was very good. Suggest ordering it with the dressing on the side because they weren't stingy with dressing. Highly recommend and we'll be back. read more

We were a party of 7 including one child. love the decor including the plates. The music was too loud to have a conversation. The menu was pub fare ,very limited, I had the fish and chips ,portion was on the small side although the fish was very good, the French fries were the standard frozen one, the "tartar" sauce lacked the tangy relish normally found in tartar sauce. The children menu looked better than the main menu. I ordered the pink lemonade with prickly pear, tasted more like a juice, not much tang to it , the sodas had ice in them but never seem cold. would have been nicer if the glasses were chilled. Our orders came out all together which was a plus. my companions salads were on the small side and the addition of chicken was $12 and salmon was $22. Came in for dinner on 5/5 and after an hour wait I was served duck that was still cold in the middle with hard/stale waffles. We were rushing to see a movie so I took my chances with the outer portions... Indeed, I came down with mild food poisoning over the weekend. I have only had food poisoning two other times in my life and needless to say neither of those times was I paying $60+ for a meal that I had to wait nearly over an hour for. Aside from this, when our group asked for the check they split it up and only brought out a check for half our groups food, 10 minutes later we all had our checks. Only issue besides the extreme amount of time to get us our checks? A kitchen gratuity added to each for splitting the checks, which was not requested. Are you serious? A gratuity for serving me cold duck? The incompetence and unfriendliness combined with lack of skill shown at this place is wild then to have the audacity to charge what they do? Beer is a bunch of hipster trash that there is reason no one else brews, I'll leave it at that. Never receiving my business again and I will be sure to let anyone I know that the food here gave me food poisoning. read more

Waiter ask for out egg order, I request egg Benedict, waiter: we are not offering eggs Benedict, Me, really? Is on the menu Waiter- no it's not- Hmm Me- I pulled the menu for mother day brunch- Waiter: oh we don't have that- no one has ordered it - hmm Me: order a omelette- which was very nice, fluffy... cheddar could have melted a bit more- over all the omelette was good- Buffet has some nice offerings, however They ran out of tender loin and the roast beef was so rare I couldn't eat it , I tried- Shrimp was a bit undercooked cooked They did have some nice looking salmon 3 cheese offerings, crackers ...no bread set up, bacon, sausage, home-fries - You know the basic brunch set up- The waffle were nice - The thing is the price!!!!!!!! $$$$ 60.00 person!!!!! Great beers, and it's so nice they have pre-organized flights for you! You can still make your own, but I like how they include all of the same style beers in a flight. One thing I really like about this place is the food is amazing! I've been to breweries that have good beer but lack luster food, or BYOF. The wings here are great, and the French fries are so good. My friends got the smash burgers and they looked amazing, my boyfriend got the Italian sausage and it had pickled peppers and a brioche bun, and I got a hotdog with pickled banana peppers and asked for pickles on the side. Our server was awesome, and the tables were very spread apart. The bathrooms were also super clean. All in all it was a great vibe here and I'll be coming back :) read more

This place was pretty cool. Recommend reservations!!!! Urban type setting. They are a microbrew with a good array of beers - they are also a distillery with their own line of hard liquors. Almost anything you could imagined We were with somebody who knew the owner and got a tour. It was impressive to see how much forethought they put into their distillery and beer brewing. Additionally, they try their best to locally source and recycle any and all waste products into mulch. Menu was very creative and food and service was spot on! read more

Real nice place - modern, clean lines and popular for a reason. Bartenders, super efficient and pleasant. Nice beer selection, with pretty inventive food coming out of their open kitchen, though it doesn't always hit it our of the park. I will give them credit for trying, doing, and most of the time succeeding. Had the bartender put together a flight for me. Found that the lagers were quite good, and I kinda prefer them as a pairing when I dine. The shishito peppers were delicious. The curry not so. My friend (a chef himself) came in late, and he asked for the fish and chips (taken over the phone as he was crossing over from Lake Placid). His take? A bit too greasy but he finished it. I like this place, and should I be in Essex again, it's a no brainer that I will visit again. read more
