The black forest inn is always a go to for Oktoberfest, The Emil Shanta band sets the mood well for a nice evening, The food is traditional fare and what would be expected in the sense of the term German. Ive only been there for the oktoberfest celebrations so i dont know what its like to just walk in lets say middle of June...........The service can be a bit slow or lacking at times, but thats to be expected........ If you start feeling like you are being paid attention to, relax, listen to the music, have another drink, and eat a pretzel...........We were a party of 6, seated within 30 minutes, i dropped 100 bucks at the bar while we waited, Spaten on tap for everyone in my party....... Since 1977, three generations of the Aichem family have worked at this establishment over the decades. Black Forest Inn, located in Stanhope, is a diamond in the rough, as it's far and few for German cuisine in New Jersey. Upon arrival, its beautiful old-world stonework and rustic wood décor welcomed us for dinner as first-timers, which a number of our friends had recommended. Reservations were easily made through Yelp. Upon entering, it felt like I was back in Bavaria with the warm, German-themed vibe featuring eye-catching outdoor paintings, lively beer steins lining the walls, and stained glass hunting scenes. Warmly welcomed by the host and owner, Barbara, my partner and I were seated promptly in one of the multi-dining rooms. Our server, Melissa, dressed in authentic Dirndls clothing as we made small talk. The German and European fusion menus with excellent farm-to-table include seasonal favorites, extensive daily specialties with on- and off-premise catering, and takeouts. As appetizers, we decided on the potato pancakes with apple sauce and sour cream as well as the pretzel sticks with the house-made beer cheese sauce. For our main meal, we opted for the Traditional Wienerschnitzel (thin, breaded, pan-fried veal cutlet) Black Forest accompanied with Spätzle (egg noodles) and Red Cabbage, as well as Chicken Breast Jager with Wine Mushroom Cream Sauce served with Spätzle and Carrots. Complimentary bread with butter started our meal, which we downed with Radler (half beer and half lemon soda). The finest and freshest ingredients are presented with simple elegance to every meal. From appetizers to the main courses, the food was beyond expectations. The portions were huge, and we guaranteed you would not leave hungry. Prices were not outrageous. The atmosphere, the service, and the food make this restaurant worth the 40-minute drive, which we can recommend. read more

Came here for a large party birthday. Staff was super friendly but the food was eh. The tasty items were the smoked trout appetizer, the potato crusted cod with the mustard sauce, the potato du jour (which were these fried mashed potato balls), and the red cabbage. Unfortunately I really disliked the spatzle and the mango mousse pie (was a gelatin mango piece on the top and the mousse didn't taste right. Couldn't have finished it even if we weren't full and the everything overall seemed very underseasoned and kinda bland. read more

This restaurant offers an attractive dining space with elevator access for those unable or disinclined to walk the stairs. The service is good. The hostess and our waitress were extremely polite. If not for the quality of the food we would return to the Black Forest Inn. I ordered veal Jägerschnitzel, which was tender but most unattractively presented with green beans mixed with asparagus, that were obviously canned and not fresh and spaetzle, which shockingly had a fish oil taste. I enjoy many vegetables, but did not care to taste the played out canned version that was served to me. As a long time resident of Stanhope I have had family events and eaten here many times including take out. I have always enjoyed the food and atmosphere and the service was usually great. That said the last two dinning experiences were clearly not as good. My major complaint was that the food was overly salty given the past and price, but otherwise it was okay. read more

When you are going to spend $300+ for a meal for two people its not only about the food but it's the treatment you receive as a patron and the overall experience. We had a 630 reservationvand never saw our waitress for at least a half hour after we were sat. It wasn't until 730 that we got our first drink. The rest of the meal wash rushed. Meanwhile all around us tables were beng stripped down to the bare wood. It was not the experience I was hoping for. I don't think we'll going back to this iconic German restaurant. read more

This food is amazing, and I'm amazed the average rating is any less than five stars. 1st: order the carrot cake in advance. They will sell out. 2nd: smoked halibut appetizer = yes. 3: The roasted duck with the apple... don't forget to put little snippets of the apple with each forkful of duck. The flavor combinations are complex and delightful. The dry Riesling pairs well. Atmosphere is amazing. I would have liked the server to check in more regarding drinks, but she was charming, and I enjoyed. The most delicious food I've had in New Jersey. I will definitely be back. read more

We went with some friends with a reservation, and after waiting about 15 minutes past our reservation time, we were seated. It seemed to take 20 minutes for everything - no one acknowledged us after we were seated. After flagging someone down the server took our drink order, and those also took about 20 minutes to arrive. After ordering we waited even longer for the food to arrive. Some of the components were cold but everyone seemed to feel okay about their meals. Although the pork schnitzel comes plain on a plate, looking sad and lonely with just a little ball of mashed potato on the side. Took forever to get our check, and again to get it back and the server forgot to return the credit card. The entire experience took over 2 hours, and the worst of it was yet to pass. I got sick and was up most of the night in the bathroom, with the chills and cold sweats. I doubt we will ever come back. read more

Came here on a Friday night with the hub. Ordered a bunch to share: - potato leek soup. MUST order. - Pizza with Bacon onion mushroom. Would definitely order this again. - Wild boar prosciutto w exotic fruit. The prosciutto was lovely! I'm not sure why they described the fruit as exotic because it came with black berries, oranges, honeydew and strawberries lol - Pork sausage combo - great flavors. Wish the sausage had more char on them for even more flavor - Pork Weiner Schnitzel - such a classic! - Apple strudel - it wasn't overly sweet which I appreciated! Service was a bit slow but our server Melissa made up for it. Super friendly and made sure we had a good time! Fantastic ambiance. Beautiful main room with cozy fireplace. Excellent spot. 1) The must get item for me is the pork shank. Something I missed from my time in Germany many moons ago. 2) German food is very different from the Indian food I make. The food is the most mild, but it is very smooth in taste. 3) I also recommend the sauerbraten, which is very tasty. 4) With the main entry, you get two choices of sides. Not just because of my experience but mostly because when a restaurant charges high end prices then my expectations are elevated and, well, the balloon of expectation rose and quickly caught fire. We arrived without reservations and were quickly seated at a two top in a beautiful old world style dining room with cloth covered tables and the most comfortable chairs I've ever sat in in a restaurant. Wheels in the legs of the chairs made it easy to move in and out on the carpeted floor. And we sat. And we sat. And the our waiter brought over two glasses of water and two dry rolls with whipped butter and said he would be back to take our "whole order". "Ding" first clue. And we waited again. After another 10 minutes he returned to take out order and as I hope to have a drink by now I offered our order knowing that the waiting was going to be the experience and it was. I ordered the beer flight and my girlfriend ordered the signature cocktail. We ordered the escargot to share then the seafood platter to share because during out wait we decided to see the google reviews and my hopes of authentic sauerbratin were quickly put to rest. And again we waited. 10-15 minutes later I called another waiter over and asked her to ask our waiter to collect our drinks before they evaporated on the bar. She walked away and immediately brought them over. I asked if our waiter was new and she said no. And the wait ensued. Finally 10 minutes later our escargot came looking great and I asked our waiter if we could have more bread for the garlic butter in the escargot. He said sure, no problem. 15 minutes later he came to clear our appetizer and said, oh, I forgot the bread. I laughed because at this point I knew this experience would have to be let to humor than anger. I told him forget it. 10-15 minutes later our entree came and it looked nice. All seemingly fried with a nice mustard sauce on the fish and all overcooked. The sauce made it acceptable. The lobster tail was inedible with a foul iodine odor and quite frankly probably old. Our water glasses remained empty until we asked another server who was filling her guest's water glasses if she could fill ours and she did so enthusiastically. Another wait, we asked for our check and yelled to him to accept our payment because we had already seen the sun rise and fall during our time there. Highlights were the cocktails and the escargot. Service was deplorable and honestly the price absolutely does not meet the product. I will not return. read more

We had a family celebration last night and it was so disappointing. There was 17 of us. The room was very nice but the service and food left a lot to be desired ! While butter was on the table we had to ask for bread. Half of our table was offered appetizers...the other half was ignored! One in our party had to wait an additional 10 minutes for her meal after everyone else was served. Another had to ask 4 times for a drink . The quality of all the food left a lot to be desired. We were celebrating 2 occasions and brought cakes ...one was graduation the other a birthday and the servers couldn't even get that correct. They sang happy birthday to the graduate. Maybe you should rethink group reservations if your staff can't handle it ! read more

I visited BFI to see the amazing Bob Wylde Trio perform with a group of friends. We previously made reservations and we were seated quickly. With countless options for German cuisine, the menu is extensive enough to offer variety without being overwhelming. My friends all loved their meals, but I especially loved the service. What a magical place! Super old school German spot tucked away in Sparta, New Jersey. The people that work here are incredibly friendly and take their job very seriously -- they are super knowledgeable about all of the menu items and beers. They're also extremely attentive. Been here a couple of times and the food and beer is great. The weinerschnitzel is tops, fried to perfection and super thin. I've also had the sausage sample which I enjoyed. They have specials and often have venison, wild boar, etc. Do not leave this fine establishment without having the Black Forest cake! Absolutely fantastic! We got catering for our Oktoberfest party and we were absolutely blown away! Barbara from the beginning made ordering a breeze- even though it was difficult to choose from all the fantastic options they offered. I really appreciated the offer for the whole chafing dishes set up- with the addition of serving utensils! The day of the caterers arrived dressed in full garb- totally unexpected but how awesome. They did a wonderful job setting everything up and even left hot boxes for us to use to keep everything warm until we wanted to serve. The food was PHENOMENAL. Unfortunately didn't get photos of everything laid out as the food went so quickly- it did not stand a chance! Appetizers to the main courses, the food was beyond expectations. From the incredibly tender sauerbraten to the juicy chicken schnitzel and delicious handmade maultaschen- we were all blown away. Hands down it made our party and I am still receiving compliments on how wonderful everything was! These guys deserve all the credit and should be the ones you go to for authentic German food.
