Stopped in after Pocono Raceway Nascar race on way back to NY. Greeted by friendly and engaging hostess and team, large bar and restaurant seating area all well decorated for the German theme. Had fun live music from solo German musician playing an accordion. Started off with just ok warm pretzel sticks unfortunately served with cold beer cheese sauce. That sauce should have been served hot. Now the team redeemed themselves with perfect and spot on Veal Jagerschitnzel and Beef Goulash. Both dishes came with a tiny splash of whipped potatoes that was good, but the side dishes were the stars and included red cabbage, the spaetzle and the potato dumpling. After living in Germany I missed the food and have been waiting patiently to go here. We went for German Christmas and wow this place is massive and beautiful. Full of authenticity from the beer to the menu. My husband loved the oysters, I was so excited for the flammkuchen and while the sauce was not as creamy as the one I remember in Germany it was still delicious. I would skip the seafood puff pastry...it just tasted like fish. Jager chicken schnitzel was outstanding and my husband tried the goose, it was delicious. Will definitely return. read more

Con: Greeted rather abruptly by the host, who seemed unclear what to do with me but ultimately ushered me down to a quiet table for two. Next to another, which was empty, but she warned someone might be brought there. (No one was, fortunately) Pro: Very friendly waitress who looked after us the whole evening and got us anything we needed, didn't push anything on us, always with a smile. Con: She arrived at some very awkward moments! She learned it was... well, TMI for a Yelp review but a first date... and so you can imagine! Finally she got the hint and let us be for awhile. Pro: That while was well over an hour beyond closing! So no disturbing your peaceful guests! Food: We were really doing drinks and appetizers the whole time. Hard to say. I have some mixed thoughts on the food, but there is a strong selection of beers available from Germany so that's good. The two of us together add up to the typical age of someone there, which sorta feels like a restaurant that had its heyday and now only appeals to those who remember how it once was. The food wasn't bad at all, mind you, but I just got that impression. Atmosphere: Badly needs a renovation to group more tables in more space instead of all clustered around tiny corners and between columns in a bunch of smaller rooms (but with no doors). We had an 8 person reservation, we arrived and our table had been given away. We then asked to wait for a much more larger table because where they wanted to sit us was not spacious enough. The food was fine,the salads were fresh and I have to say the appetizers might have been better than the actual entrees. The reason I'm rating this a 3/5 experience really came down to our waiter, I don't know if he had too much happening at once but many of our meals didn't come with the complete sides. Waiting to order more drinks took longer than we'd hoped for and some of the orders got mixed up. He just seemed very frazzle. I think this is a great place to have some very delicious beers at the bar , order appetizers but I don't think we would come back as a big party . read more

Went here on a Saturday night with my wife. We had a reservation and we're seated right away, albeit at the most cramped, corner table by the employee lounge. Fortunately, the food is much better than the service, which was poor at best. Maybe we just got the bad one, who seemed to be spending more time in the lounge then one the floor. You know who you are... The busser was in a rush to clear our plates before we were halfway through our entrees. Some of us like to talk and enjoy the food. Nevertheless, the veal schnitzel, red cabbage and spaetzle were great. The sauerbraten was good. There aren't many German restaurants in the area, so I'm being generous with the 4/5. read more

My husband and I been coming here for years, often to celebrate an event such as a birthday or anniversary. We recently celebrated our anniversary here. The staff are very attentive and the food is always delicious. We stayed with a wonderful herring appetizer served with creme frais. My husband got the venison and it was very tender and not gamey at all. Best venison I've ever tasted. I got the beef stroganoff, also delicious. We always order the red cabbage, it is a must have side dish, in our opinion. We finished if with the death by chocolate cake. read more

This might be the last great German restaurant in New Jersey, but even if there were a thousand others, this would be THE BEST! Here's why: Great ambiance and service. Staff wear authentic Dirndls and outfits from the Black Forest. They are friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. There's a staircase to the front door, and my aunt uses a walker, but they have an outdoor elevator and were helpful when we asked to use it. The interior is straight from Germany with exposed beams, carved wood, cuckoo clocks, and decor. The food! Oh, the food! Authentic German food! I ordered the beef Rouladen and there were three of them nicely plated with a carrot and mashed potatoes and a rich brown sauce. My sides were Spätzle (definitely house made) and red cabbage. Delicious! I also got the Gemischte Salat Teller (mixed salad plate) which included German potato salad (yes, warm with bacon), beet salad, cucumber salad, and greens salad with light dressing and tomato. We also had the maultaschen (kind of Bavarian ravioli) that had a wonderful sauce. My friend had a venison and boar prosciutto appetizer and then venison medallions as an entree. We had Black Forest cake for dessert. Oh, we also had three to-go containers for our leftovers because the portions are generous. CHRISTMAS EVE We went with high hopes, but left deflated. The decorations were lovely & staff friendly. The food was good, BUT everything was extremely high-priced - plus there is an added charge for credit card use. For example: I ordered a sparkling soda drink, listed as a "mocktail" on the menu.... it had 3 ingredients: sparkling soda, lime juice, & a sugar syrup. I made the HUGE mistake of ordering two. We were charged $14.50 for each mocktail !! Our bill listed them as "Premium Cocktails" ??? I asked the waiter - "Surely, this must be a mistake, these were non-alcoholic drinks?" Reply - "No, sorry they are holiday drinks at a premium price". We will not, and can not return - as their pricing is just over-the-top ridiculous. Have not been here in a while due to covid. Very good apps, cranberry compote with cambert was the winner for that round. Main course saurbraten was good, sauce was darker than I am used to but good. The amazing entree winner was the guyere pork. Butter knife easy cutting, strong flavors, the clear winner hands down in the entree round. Rounded out with chocolate souffle. Dark chocolate liqueur and apple strudel. All was ok, but strudel needed more cinnamon in our tastes. Due to great service and guyere pork, I rate 5 stars. read more

It was the first time my husband and I were here. There's really no German food restaurants around NJ. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with nothing less than pleasantries. Our waiter Kevin was superb. The food was outstanding. We started with oysters on the half shell and maultaschen. I had sauerbraten which was amazing. The gravy was so good I could've drank a cup of it. My husband had beef rouladen. If we didn't have somewhere to be we definitely would have sat by the bar after dinner and listened to the great jazz trio that was playing. We are already looking forward to going back. read more

We have eaten here several times now and really enjoy it . It's a real old school German place that reminds me of some of the great German places from Queens and Manhattan . The roast crispy pork shank is excellent, rouladen excellent but small portion . We always enjoy the food here but prices are a bit high for this area , still we go as it's the only local place when we are around . Both are great restaurants. I like Black Forest Inn because they wear authentic German clothes but speak with Jersey accents. I loved it!! read more

This is a game dinner review only. We went to the game dinner today. Wow. Very organized. First you check in and they have you listed and a table already reserved. You get seated, waitress gets you set up with drinks then they bring appetizers around. Our server was the best, Melissa! Food- being new to the whole game dinner thing, its actual stuff that guys hunted and provided, so bear stew, lots of venison meals, wild boar, goose, bass/pickerel. Its set up with two buffets, one on each end of the place,same trays on both so everyone can get their plate. They call each table up so it doesnt get overrun.all foods were good. unknown to us and maybe since we were called up last,you got one trip to the buffet,went back to our table to taste everything(15 minutes max) thought id go back and try something else and they already took down the buffet. Weird. And quick. Food was scheduled to be served at 2 pm but it was 2:38 and we were still waiting at the table for a chance to get to the buffet. A bit disappointing with the rushed closing of the buffet. Im guessing if you went up first you had more time to return to try other stuff. We didnt load our plates, just took tiny amounts of things to try thinking we could go back for things we liked. I love that its a family run place with 3 generations working there. I love that they do a great job with the foods. I didnt like that apps and food seemed late or delayed, then shut down too soon. Almost felt like they were in a rush to get the whole event finished and everyone out by a certain time. Maybe thats the best way to do it. I would suggest you go try a game dinner when its offered and see how you like it. I do think they should keep at least one buffet set up open till people leave and keep appetizers set up on a table opposite so people can try ones that may not have been brought to their table. read more

We went out to the Black Forest Inn for dinner and some music the other night. The bar was not packed and my one friend waited over a half an hour to get his first drink. The bartender was terrible at her job!! If you didn't yell at her you were not getting a fresh drink. The food we got was pretty good, but they really need new, better bartenders!! The food is reliably excellent. Service is great for this sort of restaurant in less urban settings. The restaurant is beautiful. We had two large baptism celebrations there. They provided wonderful memories. And wonderful food. The cook is a real chef. It is a two generation business that cares meaningfully about the food and authenticity. The bar is good and you can dine there if you like. We have used one of the largest spaces for big family and friends gatherings. We have also used them for very successful, large holiday parties in our home with up to 75 or more with one space and dinner for adults and another holiday party for children. We used their bartender, chef, cooks, with carving table servers for hors d'oeuvres, and more all on our Site. My wife did not have to lift a finger because the Black Forest supplied all the dinnerware, table cloths, and everything that was needed. We supplied the guests, the wines, etc. They supplied holiday drinks. Over many years they never goofed up anything and our guest always raved about what was done by the Black Forest. Until COVID we did the big party every year. We may restart next year, but all the little ones are in college or beyond now and we will have to re-invent the occasion with the help of them Black Forest. A group of nine of us came here for their wild game. Dinner on Sunday. The place is really cool on the inside, it has multiple rooms in different areas that you could potentially get lost in. The menu for this particular afternoon was filled with unusual items, such as bear, goulash, wild boar, venison done several ways, rabbit, legs, smoked goose, and several wild game pates. The beers were over priced in my opinion, almost 9 dollars for a draft beer. The other thing I didn't understand was how they did the appetizer lines. They had multiple lines of people all competing to get to one of two tables filled with the appetizers, this made our party getting their food together somewhat difficult. They also passed around a few hors d'oeuvres, which all were very good. My favorite was the roasted pheasant reuben. The actual dinner, was managed in a more structured way. The tables were called up one by one to get their food. This helped because nobody really had to wait to get their food, but it was also unfortunate for those who wanted to go back for seconds as they cleared the food and shaving dishes off the table. I, as well as many in our party, grabbed some of everything on the initial plate, and eliminating the need to go back for seconds. Dessert was an apple strudel, which was pretty underwhelming and lukewarm coffee. I understand that the wait staff was running around like crazy due to the volume of people, passing out, hors d'oeuvres, filling, drinks, and pouring coffees and providing dessert. the service, while slow because of the volume, was friendly, and we enjoyed the interaction with our waitress very much. I used to work for a German company headquartered in the International Trade Zone, just a few miles from this wonderful restaurant. Whenever the visiting delegates went to dinner, this is where they dined and always came away happy. I belong to a German car club and we are planning to end our Octoberfest rally here next month so we previewed the food and service and came away very pleased. First, the decor is right out of your most creative vision of an elegant Black Forest country inn. The waiters and waitresses greet you in tasteful garb, right from central casting for a mid-century German musical. The bar has imported beers on draft that will make you swoon! They offer a paddle with four 4oz glasses of different beers (your selections from the extensive menu) that made my beer meister friend smile with every diverse taste. He tried the dinner buffet (what the rally participants will be offered) and found it excellent. I tried their traditional Sauerbraten with red cabbage and dumpling. My wife makes excellent sauerbraten so I'm hard to please, However, their offering had tender beef, rich gravy and lots of flavor. I really enjoyed it. Desserts - part of the buffet - included a limited selection but were excellent. I had their almond cookie with ice cream and fresh berries. This dish is reason enough for me to go back. It was not too sweet, perfectly prepared and, again, full of fresh flavors. Finding good German food, beer and wine in the suburbs (you might say wilds) of New Jersey may seem a stretch but this is the best German fare I have had since I was last in Stuttgart and Munich. Recommended for that special evening with good friends. Service, food, beer and value are very good. Go, you'll thank me later. read more
