Went here on a Sunday in late September, and there was a decent amount of apples to pick! They have a ton of different kinds to choose from. You do have to pay admission to pick, but you get to pick way more than apples. Veggies and fruit are available if you go at the right time. I brought my disabled patient to the orchard for a safe, therapeutic outing, but he was left traumatized by the excessive post-picking interrogation, intense vehicle search, and authoritarian bullying by their plainclothes security. As I was held at check-out inside the building, an unnamed woman with no identification confronted me in an accusatory manner demanding to know what else we had picked. I told her everything we picked was on the counter. She asked what was in my car. I told her my patient, his rollator, and his mobility scooter. Not much else fits in a little KIA. She left me inside the building at the register and went out to my car. With no explanation to my startled patient, she began rooting through my car. He was alone and felt defenseless in a frightening situation. I don't know if I'll ever be able to get him to leave his house again for an outing like this. He is traumatized. Columbia County NY has many PYO options that are more friendly and less terrifying than this horrible place. read more

Free admission with military ID. Bring containers for "pick your own" fruits and vegetables. If you don't have any of your own containers they sell some for around a dollar, relatively inexpensive. We paid for a container but didn't have to pay admission fees because we both had military IDs. We received our change but the staff member forgot to actually give me the containers I paid for. It was sorted out quickly when I returned to the window. The fields were hot and pretty busy. We saw a lot of out of state license plates so it seemed kind of touristy. Two weeks into strawberry season the field seemed pretty picked over but we found enough to satisfy our needs. The strawberries were small but very sweet and had a distinctive strawberry flavor unlike the large varieties from California and Mexico in the grocery store. The black raspberry bushes and blueberries were plentiful and tasted excellent. The prices were good. We got a small amount of Broccoli, 5 Kirby Pickling Cucumbers, and a tray of Blueberries, Strawberries, and Black Raspberries for around $20. There is a small shop at the check out area. The shop has drinks, icecream, Samascott cider, local honey, and NY Maple Syrup. Your car will be searched and there is a wall of license plate numbers of people caught stealing and hiding undeclared fruit/vegetables in the car. Be warned, stealing is bad!! My family loves Samascott! There's no corn maze, tractor rides or farm animals to feed. It is an orchard with LOTS of choices to pick. You can drive through the orchard which is expansive. I like this so much more than some of the competitors. Many competitors are so busy, that you're bumping into other families. Samascott has a different feel. They also have chestnuts trees which is another huge draw for my family as it's very unique. We will continue to return every year! read more

I came here to pick strawberries with the family. The berries were small and there weren't a lot of them, which meant either a bad harvest (seems that this is the case every year) or we got here after everybody else. They have a no refund policy, so if you pay your admission and get to the fields and discover the pickings are slim you are out of luck. The strawberry fields were spread out in three different areas. They had other things to pick too, like squash, peas and rubarb. Checkout went quickly, though when they say they are searching your car they mean it! I saw them lift rugs and check spare tire wells in the vehicle in front of me. Someday, I should have a friend dress up as a dead body and hide in the trunk just to see what happens. They advertised free ice cream for Dads on Father's Day. If you buy a certain amount, they take off 20%, which essentially means you get your entrance fee back. Not a bad deal. I work for a company that is designed to get people with intellectual and developmental disabilities out into the community to experience fun and exciting things. We brought a few groups out to the orchard for apple picking last week. A lot of our participants work with money management goals and are here to learn. Not only were they not allowed to put some apples back if they had too many, they were also told they would not be able to leave. The participants did not feel welcomed in anyway and the staff at orchard were quite rude to them. We will definitely be finding a different orchard next year with more kind and understanding staff. read more

Samascott Orchards is a fun place for the family to go apple picking! When I was a kid, my family and I would hop in the family car and head down to Samascott Orchards in Kinderhook around each Columbus Day weekend. Once here, we'd pull up to the entrance near the farmstand and the staff would hand out maps of the orchards indicating where each specific crop of apple was grown. Next, we'd drive through the rows of apple trees and park the car a few times next to our favorite apple trees: Golden Delicious (great for baking pies) and Macintosh (great snacks). There were some apples easy to pick from the ground, but I was very agile and lightweight and would climb to the tops of the trees with a big cloth bag to pick the best apples (Climbing trees is not allowed here now). I munched down many freshly picked sweet apples. When we were done, we'd drive back to the farmstand where they would weigh the apples and we'd pay the fixed amount, minimum $5 per person, most apples are 50 cents per pound. I highly recommend bringing your own scale to weigh your picked apples to make sure each person has the minimum pick before checking out at the big scales at the exit. All vehicles are inspected! This place was awesome!! First of all I'd like to thank Yelp because if it wasn't for this website, I wouldn't have been able to read reviews ahead of time and probably wouldn't have gone to this place. We originally were planning to go to another farm called Fix Bros, but we called them beforehand and because of the cold winter we had, they didn't have any cherries for picking. I did some research and that's when I found Samascott! My boyfriend's family has a house in Sleepy Hollow Lake, which is about a 45 minute drive from this place. We were kind of skeptical about driving so far for a farm we weren't even sure was going to be good. But we read the reviews and made the trip anyway. In season right now are cherries, blueberries, black raspberries, zucchinis, and peas. We decided to pick the cherries and blueberries. Without realizing it, we were there for 3 hours and ended up picking 15 pounds of fruit. We had to use the ladder to get high up in the cherry trees. The good ones are all up there! The blueberry trees are really short and low to the ground so they were a lot easier to pick. 2 small baskets of cherries cost only $12.50. One basket of blueberries was $10.50. SO worth it! If I visit the area again I will definitely return and pick some other fruits. Very very fun day. Friendly staff. The guys are very helpful when you first drive in, and Hailey at the counter is very nice! Bring your own baskets! It was our first time so we didn't that we had to. I've been to Samascott Orchards a handful of times and enjoy their pick-your-own fruits and veggies. What keeps me coming back is the large variety I get to pick fresh off the farm. The website lists which fruits/veggies are available to pick and the prices per pound. They do require $5 per person minimum for purchase but that's easy when you're getting a little bit of everything. Bring your own containers and get them weighed on your way in to get a map so you won't have to purchase cardboard containers in store. But if you forget your own, no worries because they're $1.50 each. My family and friends always have a good time here and the fruits/veggies are deliciously fresh! read more

I've been visiting the orchard for four years and I loved the place. Every year I come here for various vegetable, fruits, and chestnuts! However this year, the staffs there become extremely unfriendly(for the two times I visited). One thing that let me decide never to go back is how they operate the orchard now. My family came to upstate to visit me, so I took them to the favorite place of mine. The day was hot so we did not pick much, but we bought a lot of things in their store. Then we were told that we did not meet the minimum pick-ur-own amount, which is $5/person. Our shopping total was way more than the required minimum charge, but they insisted to charge us. So we had to go back to pick more to fill the minimum (or other wise they just charge us the money for nothing). I respect the rule, but I think there's more beyond just the rules. Went there today to pick strawberries. I hadn't been there since they started charging $5 per person for picking. I'm not sure if other places do this but I guess you've gotta do what you've gotta do to stay in business. I have seen people pull in in big vans with lots of people prior to this policy. The staff are nice and the picking was great. They also search your car as you leave. Not just the trunk. They open doors and look in as well. You probably can get across the border easier. I guess I'm ok with it. Like I said - they must have been burned too many times. If you are someone who may be annoyed by this - maybe not the place for you. We come to Samascott for all of our pick-your-own needs. Other than a small shop up front selling produce, cider, cider donuts, ice cream, and a few other treats, there's none of the fuss of the other popular Apple-picking destinations. There's no hay ride, no petting zoo, no distillery, no bounce house. It's about picking fruit and veg, and I like it that way. Just outside of the village center of Kinderhook, Samascott isn't a far hike from Albany. You drive in through the gates and stop at a window where you'll be handed a map of what's ready to be picked. You can purchase bags or bins here, but you're welcome to use your own. You can have your own containers weighed and labeled before you pick so you're not charged for their weight. There is a sign requiring a minimum of $5 worth of produce to be picked per person. Although I'm not sure we have always met that minimum, we were never bothered. Samascott has a large variety of fruits a veggies and many ripen at different times, extending the short seasons (especially those summer fruits). We come here in early summer for strawberries; return for cherries, nectarines, peaches in July; blueberries and cucumbers in August; and round that it in the fall with pumpkins and apples. Because the farm is large enough, it's never really felt crowded to me. They do often to check your car when you leave to be sure you haven't "forgotten" to pay for any produce, but the check out process is otherwise quick and painless. In season apples were $1/pound this fall (2018). Although I wish Samascott were an organic farm, I understand that it's costly to get that certification, so I just try to scrub my apples a little extra. Be sure to also visit Samascott's market down the road on your way out. It's a larger version of the little shop at the farm, and there's many local treats, produce, and flowers to choose from. Great farm! We came here during berry season. We stopped here for blueberries and strawberries! There are tons of apple trees everywhere and cherry trees. This is a big farm you can definitely walk to the locations of the fruits that are spread out at the farm but it is definitely easier to drive to each location when you enter the farm. There are also numerous different kinds of vegetables you can also pick. They sell by weight and also offer their own ice cream and apple cider by the gallons. Prices are very reasonable we brought home 2 quarts full of blueberries, strawberries, 2 ice cream cones, a pint of apple cider and a couple handful of string beans just for about $20 total. I've been a loyal customer at Samascott for years and years. They have a phenomenal selection of pick your own. And, while I'm very familiar with the policy to inspect your car upon check out, we're living in a pandemic. It's as simple as stating what you need to do and then asking to touch someone's car, or politely describing what the customer must do to facilitate. When we offered to lift the trunk and mats ourselves, all of the other associates started yelling at us for something they didn't hear. We've spent thousands of dollars here over the years and know how this works, yet no customer deserves that treatment, especially during a pandemic. Inside the farm store is a list of blacklisted license plates, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the associates listed my car there for the wrong reasons. While the fruit variety and quality is fairly high, this most recent customer experience is hard to overlook. read more

They have black raspberries, gooseberries, strawberries, blueberries, sour, red, yellow, rainier, cherry, apples of all kinds, pears, plums, and many more things. The people are laid back and you can basically eat your fill. People come with whole families and kids. I bought a pre made chicken bahn mi sandwich from their refrigerated section yesterday for dinner at tanglewood. Great show, but the sandwich's chicken was incredibly hard and stale, almost inedible. I was like a kid in a candy store. SO many options, so many fresh fruits and veggies to pick! When you get to the entrance, someone will give you a map. Drive your car through the farm, follow the map to what you want to pick. Don't pick anything that's not on the list, as they will charge $10 per lb! BYOB -- Bring your own bag!! We didn't know this, but luckily the bf's sister brought extra bags. Also each person needs to pick $5 worth of fruits/veggies. The plan was to pick Fuji and Honey Crisp apples. There were plenty of Fuji apples and it didn't take long for us to fill up our bag. We searched all around for the Honey Crisps with no luck, I think they were picked out. I stumbled upon some fairy tale eggplants and couldn't help myself. Before I knew it, I picked 3lbs of it! Just roasted some last night and they were delish! We also stopped by the strawberry field. I thought strawberry season was over, but it was still abundant/easy to find plump strawberries! So good! Lastly, I stopped by the broccoli field and picked a crown of broccoli. I've never seen a broccoli field before and it was so cool. FYI we did need a knife to cut the broccoli off. They also had cauliflower to pick. Check out is easy. Pull up next to one of the scales (there are 3 lanes). The workers will weigh your items, write down the weight, go inside to pay. This was the worst apple orchard we've ever been to. They are charging $5/person as an "entrance fee". When asked why, they said people were stealing apples and eating them before they were paid for. How many apples can you actually eat before you get sick!? They also "inspected" every vehicle that left the premise to make sure people weren't stealing. All the tire compartments, trunks, back seats. The place was terrible. If you want a good apple farm, Golden Harvest is just down the road with delicious apple cider donuts, fun atmosphere, and pumpkins! DO NOT GO TO SAMASCOT FARMS!! read more

Love this place! We came here after going to another farm(love apple farm). We called ahead to see if they allow dogs and the employee on the phone said yes as long as they are on a leash and then when we got there another employee behind the counter told us we could not go into the orchard with the dog. I understand why people are hesitant to let dogs in, some owners don't clean up after their dogs and ruin it for the rest of us. This place allowed us to bring her to the orchard as long as she remain on a leash. You just can't go in the vegetable fields and the farm store. I loved the fact that we can drive our car right inside and park next to the orchard. Had some great ice cream from the farm store and picked some great fruit. Overall it was a great experience. We had such a lovely time apple picking today! You drive close to the orchards and take time filling your bag. You pay per pound. This is the perfect place to take the family for a fun fall event. The staff is also very friendly! FYI- They do inspect your car and trunk. The best part of our trip was the delicious Apple Cider donuts and the homemade ice cream. This *would* have been our 7th year picking apples here but we turned around and left when we saw the "$5 per person" sign posted. We wondered if we were overreacting so we went to google reviews and yelp to see if anyone voiced their disappointment with this new admission fee and all I can say is - Samascott I hope you're taking note! Almost as good as growing it yourself. We took our parents and 3 yr old son to Samascott for a day of psuedo farming the last weekend in June. You pick up a map and drive yourself out to the fruit/ vegetable you are interested in, fill your basket/ bag and then go back to get weighed and check out. The blueberries, black rasberries and tomatoes this year were the best we have had in a long time. Picking them out off the vine makes you think that you had a hand in growing them and somehow makes them taste more delicious.
