Talbott & Arding was chosen as our first stop on our girls' getaway journey. Tucked in the Hudson Valley, just an hour from the Berkshires, it was a sweetly energetic beginning to our day. We each chose a sandwich from the counter. My smoked salmon on focaccia was a delight. The bread, airy and light, beautifully happy yeast just bounding with lift, defying the constraints of olive oil which left my fingers gloriously glistening. I haven't had a focaccia as happy as that in a minute. Super thin radish, bright pickled shallot and fresh watercress all gave a nice vibrant touch. Ben's cream cheese couldn't possibly be creamier. And the delicate, silky, fresh, luxurious salmon... What a dream. So balanced. I filled my arms with goods- iberico salami, Aleppo chili oil, Blackstrap coffee beans, local chocolates, and an adorable Talbott & Arding puzzle. I'm sure I could have easily convinced myself to buy just about everything I laid my eyes upon. The cheese counter was an absolute work of art. It's clear that Talbott & Arding is a willing servant to the gifts of the surrounding earth and people. The homage it pays is palpable. OMG-this place is amazing! We stayed at an Air BNB nearby who left a Gouda cheese and a bag of salt and pepper toast. They were so good, we stopped in for more cheese and the toast plus some amazing fig cookies-like Fig Newtons but 10X better. This is a magical local shop. Everything looks incredibly fresh, homemade and unique. Fresh sandwiches, salads, pastries, desserts ... and the cheeses! I love that there's a little gift shop portion of the store at the front. Hello I reviewed this establishment several times and now I see that the employees say the owners are "evil". This is their word. The owner Kate treated me very poorly as a customer so I am not that surprised at what employees say about these 2 women. Why would you want to give your money to a business that is so poorly rated by customers and employees. Also have noted that someone else complained about the price of their cheeses , which I have previously pointed out. Btw there is a lovely cheese shop in Kent CT that has reasonable pricing. There's a lot to say about this gourmet grocer, including that it is eye-poppingly pricey even by Hudson standards and that it sells a wide array of intriguing condiments and candies that are genuine curiosities even in our globalized modern age. But the very first thing that springs to mind when I think of Talbott & Arding -- the thing that fills me with a sense of longing, the thing so bewitching that I fret about it being out of stock as I walk through the door -- is the egg salad. Yes, the egg salad here is so extraordinary that I sound like some mad romantic consumed by passion and lust when I talk about it. This is all the more incredible because I generally do not even like egg salad! Normally, when I encounter egg salad, I see large chunks of rubbery egg whites swaddled in mayonnaise and perhaps studded with chopped celery and flecked with parsley. Here, however, we have something different. The eggs have been minced and mashed to the consistency of guacamole, resulting in less of an egg salad and more of an egg dip. The color is almost uniformly yellow, interrupted here and there by bits of egg white and -- crucially -- by pieces of glorious golden yolk. Aside from the eggs, the only ingredients are mayo, salt and pepper, so the result is a genuine gestalt that exemplifies the power of simplicity. It's also a testament to the power of quality ingredients, because I have to think that the eggs come from chickens that are living a positively pampered existence. And I also wonder if the store, which makes its own meringues, has a surplus of yolks that help to make this the ultimate egg salad. You can enjoy this egg salad on its own by the spoonful, but it's even better paired with their freshly baked focaccia. As I mentioned, there's a lot more to say about this store, but I'll leave it there: come for the egg salad, stay to discover many more excellent eats. read more

I love places of interest in Hudson that are not on Warren Street, the main drag. The lovely Talbott is a big and modern place to be if you like upscale made on premises pastry, good espresso, wide variety of cheese, and an interesting assortment of prepared foods. My espresso and scone were excellent and I went home with baguette with butter and prosciutto. My only issue is the picnic table seating belows please don't sit long. And no wifi!! Talbots is my absolute favorite hudson lunch spot. The house focaccia is fantastic the core of a stellar panini line up as well as the world class muffuletta. The deli side options are extensive with flavors for every palate and diet and always land the execution. The ham and raclette always hits the spot and their asparagus and bacon panini was unashamedly the highlight of a pretty good day. It's mind boggling that anyone would eat at a burger king or mcdonald's when you could have home made and local sandwiches that are like 2 dollars more. It was pretty empty when we came in on a weekday morning. But the woman at the cookies counter was super helpful and the chocolate whale cookie and chocolate walnut cookies, which are her favorites, were delicious! The focaccia pizza was OK. This place has a really well curated selection of cheeses, charcuterie, and artisanal grocery items. Fun spot to shop around. Came in yesterday with some friends for lunch around 1:30. We tried to order some sandwiches and were told the things we were interested in were sold out. When asked what they did have left we were told "use your eyes". Asked if they could make us some simple custom sandwiches (ya know, with all the CHEESE and MEAT the place is packed with) and were rudely told "they don't do that." I worked in the fine cheese industry for 5 years and have never been to a cheese shop that has food service that wouldn't make you a sandwich with the ingredients they have in the case. I'm not often inspired to leave reviews but the curt attitude of the employee really left a bad taste in my mouth. I understand if you can't make me something "special" (though this place should really consider doing that lol y'all make cheeseboards????) but wasn't even willing to just tell us what they DID have left on the menu is just ridiculous to me. read more

If you are in Hudson and looking for great options for picnic food to take up to Olana, this is the stop! A wonderful assortment of cheeses and carefully prepared foods to suit many tastes. We ordered a pizza slice, several cheeses, and a lemon pound cake which were all superb. The space is very open and didn't feel crowded even near lunch time. Overall, very happy with everything we've had here! Their bread is excellent and I highly recommend it. I would also like to use this moment to BEG them to bring the cheese monger focaccia back, as that is #1 for me. Definitely also try the fruit and nut bread and/or their other loaf cakes- so delish! I ordered a small mac & cheese and meatballs in tomato sauce and was surprised to receive the order cold. Unfortunately I failed to realize that this is a prepared foods place. Overall, the meatballs were flavorful and the Mac & cheese was great, just a tad too creamy for me personally. We microwaved the Mac for 2 minutes and the meatballs for approximately 3 minutes (didn't have access to an oven at our hotel). read more

I recently purchased a gift card from Talbot and arding and sadly as a gift to a friend of mine. I put it in the mail and a birthday card and sadly the card was stolen from her mailbox and she never got it. I did not have the receipt for the card, but I went down to the store and I explained the situation to the young gentleman who is there to help me and he looked up my card. He looked the card up the date it was purchased. He canceled the original card And he issued me a new one they were absolutely perfect. They were helpful. This is a super cute little bustling shop on the main drag. We constantly found ourselves trying to dodge folks coming and going in and out of the shop (a common theme with Hudson shops apparently) which is a testament to its popularity and lack of operational planning skills. I have been coming to this store every time I get up here. The food is always amazing! Today we bought $90 worth of items which most everything was fabulous. The cheese...to die for! The baguette...amazing! All was so good but... we bought a roasted chicken from Northwinds Farm, which is a local farm that we know. Once we cut open the chicken there were two things that we noticed. We were delighted that the cavity was stuffed with fresh thyme and lemon. But the prices are officially out of control. $40 for a small pumpkin pie that was average. Cup of broth for $7? While great cheese etc the prepared food is mediocre. Nice addition to Warren Street. I ordered a nice Chevre, Ossau-Iraty, and some sausages from the counter. I grabbed two baguettes that were priced perfectly. Ossau-Iraty is my favorite sheep's milk cheese from the Pyrenees. I thought the nutty and grassy flavors went perfectly with the white wine I purchased at Hudson Wine Merchants. Went there and grabbed few things, getting ring out in the register is a bit slow because everyone is so friendly in hudson. The bake goods are amazing a bit in the pricy side but everything in hudson is pricy. They have a nice variety of cheeses there, also jams and other good to go with it.
