We stopped in here after a long drive from Boston for a wedding weekend. Being from out of town, we really weren't expecting anything other than eating and we were very pleasantly surprised. Nice rustic atmosphere where we were seated nearly immediately. The beer selection was decent and had a great local variety to choose from food was delicious. Everyone else got a different version of burger while I ordered the pound and a half of baby back ribs. Everything was cooked exactly as ordered all while our server never wrote a single thing down. Prior to coming to coming to the black horse tavern I was warned of the possibility of slow service. When seated I had no problem that I wasn't seen until 5 minutes passed, or that I was not handed a drink menu until I asked for one. What I do have a problem with however is being treated differently to other patrons for no apparent reason. Visiting this town as a person of Latino descent has been a joy so far but at the Black Horse Tavern I finally understood why I was warned about coming to Bridgton. After the hostess sat us down, we waited about 5 minutes to see hour waitress, as she approached our table she immediately asked if we wanted drinks or appetizers, my boyfriend asked for a drink menu which seemed to bother her. After receiving the drink menu we waited another 5 minutes to then be met with another waitress because our original one passed us off to someone else who ended up taking our drink and entree orders. The original waitress did eventually return with our said beverages she slammed them down in front of my boyfriend and I. The only reason I know the waitress's name is Shannon is because I heard her greet another table and because it was on my receipt. We carried on and made the best of our situation as we enjoyed what we could of our dinner but even as she returned with the bill, she slammed it in front of my boyfriend yet again and continued having pleasant conversations with another group of people. Went for brunch on Saturday and as always had a wonderful time. The French toast was excellent as were the Greek omelette and burger. The service was amazing and we always love the look of the decor which pays homage to the stables it was created out of years ago. There is a reason they have their local crew at the door at 9:55am to take their bar seats as the staff are so friendly and welcoming. read more

My other table mates had nothing but issues not sure if this was a one off chance but food came out wrong, we found hair in the food and to meals were not fully cooked and were cold. It's sad to say I'm very disappointed given how expensive the menu is I won't be coming back the atmosphere is nice but other customers were experiencing problems from our waitress also. Stopped in for brunch on the way back to ME from Ice Castles in NH. The parking lot was packed but the restaurant is bigger inside than you might think. We were seated right away. The hostess and wait staff (several stopped by our table) were friendly. My coffee cup never went dry. The Eggs Florentine and Huevos Rancheros were both delicious and plentiful. I was incredibly jealous when I saw someone's creme brulee french toast come out. It turned numerous heads - we can leave it at that! Wow. I was pleasantly surprised by the prices, to be honest. I stopped in here after a hike via a recommendation from locals. I sat at the bar, which was well stocked, friendly and welcoming. On the server's recommendation, I tried the salad with roasted chicken and it was great. Fresh veggies, dressing on the side, excellent chicken and a large portion. Everything the folks around me had looked good also. Pretty standard tavern fare, and they've got a few specials every day. I can't speak to the table service, since I sat at the bar. The space itself is very old -time tavern. Dark wood, small tables, cozy bar. Easy parking. Around $25-$30 for a cocktail and entree salad, with tip. The food here is wonderful and worth the visit alone! Their New England Seafood Chowder is absolutely delicious - seasoned up with bacon and herbs, perfectly creamy, just spot on. Cajun Burger was one of the best burgers I've had in a long long time! You can actually taste the flavor of the beef and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare, as requested. All the toppings like onion straws and Cajun mayo just added to the deliciousness. It's a messy one but one hundred percent worth all the extra napkins! The Cobb salad was also so delicious and fresh, the highlight being PERFECTLY cooked and seasoned chicken, and a great portion of it to boot. Amazing Bleu cheese dressing. Fries were so good once we added a little salt. Everything was just fantastic. Our experience would've been a home run if the service was better. We never got a drink menu so had to look it up on our phones, waters went empty, just missing a little bedside manner altogether. Very disappointed in dinner last night. Food took an hour to arrive and when it did it was cold - gravy was like jelly ...we expected brussel sprouts (they ran out by 6:30 on Saturday night?) and got a mushy hodgepodge of peppers onions and zucchini ... the waitress basically said it was because they were "slammed" ... she had a bad attitude - but if you pay for dinner you expect at least good service - the food tasted good but was cold - mashed potatoes like a solid lump with jelly gravy. Then we had to walk the credit card up as she gave us the bill and walked away - they did cut the cost in half - which was good - but it was just a bad experience - we've been here before and had great experiences so maybe this was a one-off ... we we're really looking forward to a nice meal out - it's such a disappointment when it's not. read more

We always get a great meal here. Staff is friendly and attentive. If you get there early you might be lucky to get a seat at the bar ! I got the owners special which was delicious. Two beef tenderloins with Gorgonzola butter, rice pilaf and green beans. I took half home for lunch the next day . My guy got the prime rib which he couldn't finish . I got the steak and cheese sub and my wife got the fish and chips. Both were good and we got the spicy southwest fritters as an appetizer which was recommended and that was great too. First off, we called to reserve a table and after waiting over 45 minutes upon arrival, we asked if it would be better for our group to sit at two tables. The waitress responded that my friend should take a step back and he cannot speak to her that way as she stepped towards him and put her hand in his face. As we asked for the manager, she said that the owners wife would definitely come out and stand by her. I will say the next woman that came out did try to help, but that same waitress kept putting her fingers in our faces saying don't let the door hit us on the way out. I walked out as my friend was so calmly having a conversation how to correct the situation. It is such a shame that some incompetent rude people are in such the wrong profession. We waited over an hour to get seated, with barely anyone ahead of us, and then had to wait another hour just to get our food. When it finally showed up, it was mediocre at best. Our waitress could barely be bothered to stop by the table, maybe three times total. Then, to top it off, she slapped a 20% gratuity onto the bill just because we asked to split it five ways. Came up to spend the day with my Two local Aunts who frequent this establishment often. The atmosphere was excellent. The service started out rough even though one of my Aunts knows everyone by name. In this review I will be kind enough to NOT name the waitress. What my cousin and I found offensive; As a patron I prefer my Bowl of Chowder prior to my Sandwich. The Waitress ran off without hearing my request for the Chowder first. My cousin spoke up to get her attention. The waitress replied "I am well aware, I know how to do my job." When my Bowl of Soup came out AND my Cousins - my Cousin chose to be quiet. See my Cousin wanted hers WITH her meal. My Aunts Soup came out with our meals. When we got our meals. I ate my first first then went for my Sandwich. I had ordered a BLT with Cheddar Cheese & Avocado. When I took my first bite in I noticed I was lacking the Cheese and Avocado. I would not have been bothered except as a deaf person I always hold the menu and point to what I am ordering. I read the lips of the Waitress and she repeated it back. My Aunt then ordered the same Sandwich but with American Cheese and NO Avocado. I called ***** Waitress over to the table numerous times and it appeared she ignored my requests. I asked another waitress to please ask her to come to our table. When the waitress arrived I said "I realized you are well aware of how to do your job, so please advise me as to why my Sandwich is lacking cheese and avocado?" She had no response. I immediately got a corrected Sandwich. The Sandwich was amazing! I mean the fries were hands down yummy! The Seafood Chowdah was so hearty and thick! The food was all in all was delicious and I would recommend the food. The ambiance was great. The Service today was horrible. Considering my Aunt is a regular I would have expected better service. Understandably, everywhere is slow and understaffed but things seemed more off than average. The music for brunch at 11 was extremely loud so we couldn't talk over it and perhaps more appropriate for an evening at a pool hall.
