I have been training at Black Lotus for almost 3 years as of now. Before I started here, I would workout at popular kickboxing gym with locations nationwide. The workouts were great and super effective, but the marketing and culture of that gym was very much tailored to the "DROP 10LBS FOR SUMMER!!" crowd (which is fine....if you're into that sort of thing). For years I was curious about learning a martial art and learning how to fight. A former coworker introduced me to the gym in 2019 and I wound up joining early 2021. I was terrified at the idea of ACTUALLY sparring and taking hits. Coach Jose encourages all his Muay Thai students to put work into sparring and do their best to do Wednesday sparring classes. Suffice it to say, my first day, I was a mop and I was used to wipe the floor.....but I survived, and I came back...again and again. In all seriousness no one actually hurt me that night, I tried something new and learned something great. That night, Coach Jose DM'ed me and praised me just for showing up. It reminded me how important it is to face your fears and, literally and metaphorically, roll with all the punches. Every Wednesday, Coach Jose reminds us sparring is not about winning or losing, it's about learning, immersion into technique and....believe it or not...HAVING FUN!! I have traveled with Coaches Jose and Nina 3 times so far; 2x to Jose's homeland of Costa Rica and once to Michigan. I got the opportunity to train with Nak Muays (Muay Thai fighters) from across the country and train with some masters and fantastic mentors in the art. Every person I have met through Muay Thai and Coach Jose has been intelligent, skilled and gifted me with important knowledge. Coach Nina is also a fierce teacher and trainer with great knowledge on fitness and technique. Coach Lenny, along with being HILARIOUS, has a unique and fiery spirit when he teaches that you don't find often. I could go on and on about the community I have found, the friends I have made and the priceless mentorship of Jose. I could go into his no-nonsense background and skill in teaching everyday self defense techniques and weapon wielding, but that's what his bio is for. What I really want you, reader, to take from this is that Jose and Black Lotus bring out the best parts of me and the gym has truly been a school and refuge for people in the community. I've been going to Black Lotus gym for to 3 years and I love it. Coach Jose and Coach Nina (the owners) are exceptional people and coaches. Very high level training, classes packed with information and super fun. I have e trained at many different schools over the years and very few have the gym moral that Black lotus does. The coaches here have years of experience and go above and beyond to teach you as much as possible in the time-span of each class.
