Beautiful course. Fun and challenging. Course was in great shape. Don't understand all the bad reviews about course employees. Every single employee I came into contact with from pro shop to bar and grill to the starter was polite and helpful. Just got back a few days ago from Black Mesa and as one review said it is simply magical!!! Golfed there over 10 years ago and it was fantastic. Always bothers me about reviews from people that complain solely about an interaction with a staff member and then give one star. I Golf to enjoy the beauty of the course and the challenge of the sport. I give five stars to the course and it's ruggedness and beauty and immaculate condition this past week.. I give five stars to the staff that were working at our early morning teetime. Completely professional, helpful, and informative. The starter was a unique individual, but put us in great moods to have a great round. As I said, the course was in great shape, loved everything about it, challenging to the max!! Greens were brutally fast, but rolled like glass. If you want an easy round of golf, where things are error free, don't sign up for this course. The beauty of the course will overtake the weaknesses of your golf game. Played five courses over a three day Period and I still hang my hat on Black Mesa. Rugged, solitude!!! Love it read more

I actually had a decent round so.that is not impacting my review. Really didn't enjoy the course...far too many blind shots and gimmicky holes. Overall a poor layout. No doubt that this impacted the pace of play which was painfully slow. At more than one hole there were 3 groups in play. The staff really needs to check their attitude. With the lone exception of the starter...they were extremely unfriendly. I wanted to like this course but there is no reason for me to ever return. read more

The 2 stars is given because of the beauty of the Golf course. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about this. One female white staff member, not sure her name, but she's indeed very rude. I'm very unwelcoming. I can go on and on and tell you about the interactions. I've had with this person, but what's the point? Nothing's gonna change and it's sad. I'd rather play twin Warriors and get the same beauty with exceptional customer service. Then to go way out of my way to drive here to be unwelcomed, i also rather pay the absurd amount to play paako ridge where at least there they treat you like you're someone. It's unfortunate that a native owned land is being managed by this white lady. Shame on you, black Mesa. For hiring such a rude arrogant person. read more

OUTSTANDING COURSE! Have played several times in the past 10 years and have never been disappointed. 16 of us played Sunday, August 21 on our annual guys trip. The course was in really great shape, greens rolled smooth/true. The rough was very thick and if you get off the rough into the desert areas, good luck to ya. Several of our players lost balls in the rough. Customer service was FANTASTIC! We were playing 36 holes and had 4 tee times in the morning at 8am and had a good break in between the final 4 some finishing the first round before the 1st group had to tee off in the 2nd round. The groups in front of our times were very slow to the tune of a 5.5 hour round for our first group. They were on that group several times getting them to speed up to no avail. This caused us to miss our tee times for the afternoon round. Luckily it was pretty open and they let us play but said we had to have carts back by 6pm. Talked to the Manager (think here name was Laurie) and she said she would stay and allow us to play to finish our rounds up. We got the carts stowed for them and showed some appreciation to the manager and departed. Black Mesa is a gem of a course. It is a bit of a hike but very much worth every penny paid. The customer service was awesome, the fairways/greens were top notch and the views were incredible. If you are in the Santa Fe or even the Albuquerque area, do yourself a favor and go play it. You will really enjoy it. read more

This course had to be the best bang for the buck in the Santa Fe area. Judging from some of the reviews, maybe the course had some maintenance issues in the past, but it was amazing when we played it. Every tee box, every fairway and every green was perfect! And the course is visually stunning. I couldn't believe the course wasn't crowded. If you're in Santa Fe, drive the 30 minutes and enjoy this gem. The attention to detail in the clubhouse and the restaurant are not great, but we came to play golf and this was an amazing experience. Don't miss it! read more

Black Mesa is a fantastic layout set in a beautiful location. I played last week and the course was in great shape. Over the past years, Black Mesa was shunned due to a severe problem with irrigation that all but shut it down. But there are no signs of issues now. The course is fully recovered. Food services are sparse, but the course is spectacular. read more

I played this several years ago and was severely disappointed...came back on a whim, and WOW! I played 10 corses on Albuquerque/Santa Fe area this last week and this was by far the nicest one this year. They made a major comeback!!! The only notable one we didn't play was Paa Ko...and there is no way that course is 4 times the quality of this course. The greens were phenomenal and the fairways were pristine. This is a great course. This is one of the best desert courses I've played. In fact, it's one of the best courses period! A great and interesting track. One of those course you need to play multiple times. Makes you think. Tees and fairways were great, greens a little slow for they were recently dressed. Single I was paired with was a local pro. Said greens are normally much faster. He also said I was playing the best course in the state. I'm from the Midwest and have played some great courses in Chgo and Wisc. This course was right there with them. Can't wait to get back next year. Staff was great also. read more

I believe it was Golf Digest that brought me to this course back in the mid 2000's ranking it in the top 100 public courses in the U. S. Over the years I've played this course probably 6/7 times as I passed through New Mexico, bringing friends and my wife to enjoy this unique and rare treasure. That was until this year. I played Black Mesa on Wednesday finding a dying course which has deteriorated so badly I can't believe it'll survive into 2017. The fairways are dead crunchy grass, the cart paths are in dire need of maintenance and to make things worse there was no water. I don't mean drinking water, no water for rest rooms and one porta potty on hole number 2. Food and beverage service is non existent Monday/Thursday and even though the Pro Shop offered free bottled water and a discounted rate it didn't prepare me for the 3 1/2 hours of what was to come. It's so sad to see this once gem of a course become what it is. My wife asked if I had a good time and I must admit it was not what I had envisioned or was expecting. I won't be back. Terrible course. Expensive, grounds are worst I've ever seen for an high end destination resort. Drinks are expensive-$9.00 for an average Bloody Mary. Unique course layout that looks like it has been neglected and needs an infusion of cash, fast! Try somewhere else if you are in the area. $87 round, way too much for what you get. read more

I am posting this for my partner. He has played this course every year when we come to Taos. The first few years he said the course was in great shape. This year, however, the course was not well maintained. There were weeds everywhere. There was no sand in the bunkers. Oh and did I say there were weeds everywhere. One of the best golfing experiences of my life. Absolutely stunning course in an unbelievably beautiful place. Every tee box offers a new picture from a best golf courses coffee table book. I've played most of the better Northern California public courses (Chardonnay, Silverado, Hiddenbrooke, Eagle Vines, Harding Park, Half Moon Bay, Pacific Grove, Pasatiempo, etc.), and not one of them is any more breathtaking. This course is spectacular! The course is in better than average shape. The greens, like just about every course I play lately, suffer from the pathetic laziness and self absorbed arrogance of "golfers" who won't repair their pitch marks (pet peeve), but were well manicured and rolled as true as any I've ever played on. The course is extremely challenging (the whites play to a slope of 130, and there's blues and blacks if that's too easy for you) and you can misplace a lot of balls if you're not careful, but it's as fair as can be expected for those with no local knowledge. Only three complaints: 1) I got a really cheap rate from Golf Now, and the guys in the pro shop seemed irritated by that, and were borderline rude and unfriendly until I told them i needed to rent clubs, which seemed to cheer them up, (although it was only $38 for a nice, well cared foe set of TaylorMades your choice stiff or regular). 2) There weren't enough players; I don't see how they can keep going for what they charge. 3) Gasoline carts; those things are a drag especially in such a peaceful place. The amenities are a bit below average, but the course is so far beyond exceptional, it doesn't matter. If you love playing golf on superior courses in beautiful places, get to Black Mesa as soon and as often as you can. This place is special. read more

I just played Back Mesa yesterday and the course is in super condition. Fairways and greens are as good as any course in New Mexico. Sand traps are not being played while converted to grass bunkers. For those who post the photos of the desert, it's the desert. Don't hit it there!! I have played this course since it opened and travel from Dallas to Santa Fe to play it. It is back to 90% of it glory days. You will not be disappointed. And at $59 you can't go wrong. read more

Way OVERPRICED! We were charged $80+ for a round and were treated to greens and fairways that are in terrible condition! Not to mention they use well water for drinking on the course that taste like rotten eggs! If you are going to charge that amount of money for a course in bad condition the least you can do is provide a couple bottles of drinking water. PLEASE don't waste your time or money. They lost our tee time reservation. The carts were dirty and filthy. The tee boxes and fairways were filled with weeds. The cart paths were dirt that were rough and rutted from previous rains. The GPS in one cart kept going off and on probably because of the roughness of the paths. They charged $9 for a small alcoholic drink. There are much better courses in the area. read more

Been playing this course on/off for several years. Played today & I was not at all pleased. The greens have brown,dead spots all over them( fungus I assume) which made putting quite a challenge. The forward t-boxes are nothing but weeds and were so hard you couldn't get a tee to go into the ground. The golf cart was dirty and no sand in either container on the cart. The bathrooms on the course are porta-potties and are disgusting to say the least. I don't plan on returning to this course since there are several others that are in much better condition and less expensive. read more
