I visited today for a flight of ciders. I got the four cider options on the menu and one mead. I love that you can have any number of flavors in your flights, not just limited to the standard 4. They were all great and unique. The fall flavor, Jackanapes, was one of the best ciders I've had. The place is a little tucked away but totally worth the visit. Great vibes, super friendly, and overall a great place to spend some time and drink some alcohol! I will definitely be back when I'm in the area next especially since the owner says the flavors are always changing and they are always trying new combinations. read more

This stop came with a reminiscing story about when John's sister brought mom here and she drank and fell asleep sitting at the bar and started snoring, lol. We arrived and I was happy to pick my tasting flight and sample meads and ciders- some of my favorite beverages! Everything is on draught, which means taking any home would be in growlers- and home for us was not local- so we just sampled and enjoyed- which was very good! The Zephyrus was one of my favorites- cider with ginger and candied orange peel & I enjoyed the All Hall which was watermelon and mint cider. The Viking Blood mead was also tasty. I will say mead is done differently in this area than what I have tried in other places, but that could be the difference between draught and bottled. Maybe. I've had a lot of cider and mead and this had to be the most watered down tasting of both. Overall I tried 2 ciders that tasted like flavored seltzer water. This is not what a true Cider tastes like. The mead had very little honey flavor and was carbonated beyond a "sparkling mead". Service was also not the friendliest. read more

Just put down your phone, get in your car and go get yourself a glass of cider. This place is laid back, with a great food truck and some very unique ciders. The Ursus Americanus was my favorite, followed by the Zephyrus. My wife preferred the meads (little dragon) which are a little sweeter, but nowhere near as sweet as a full on mead. We got to meet the owner Dave who was very friendly and a real Anglophile, which apparently kickstarted his love of ciders. read more

We had been making the rounds between driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway, sightseeing on top of Mount Mitchell, and trying beers from towns named Weaverville. Alas, we needed to make our way back towards Black Mountain, where we were staying and made a stop at Black Mountain Cider + Mead (BMCM). Located next door to Pigsah Brewing Company, BMCM was recommended to me by my girlfriend, who had gone there a few years ago and loved their selection of cider and meads. The cidery is a gem nestled in along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Unlike most cideries and meaderies in the U.S., the ones BMCM makes are dryer, more in the traditional approach from Europe. They are delicious and enjoyable from the ones I tried in the flight we ordered. The Dreadnaught was a robust scrumpy-style cider, while the All Hall tasted exquisitely with a burst of watermelon that wasn't too sweet and a minty finish. Additionally, the Valkyrie was also delicious with subtle notes of honey to make this cyser quite worthwhile. But my favorite was the Viking Blood, a magical blast oak-aged cherry mead that was light and deeply satisfying. You could enjoy multiple servings of the Viking Blood without feeling like you would end up on the floor with your teeth in the back of your head. Furthermore, I dug their taproom that has a very clubhouse-like vibe -- similar to when you walk into one of those retro music stores that had a lounge to chill and listen to music. Woah!!! I had no idea I could like cider (or mead!) this much. What a cool place in Black Mountain, NC, a short drive outside of downtown Asheville, NC. Their prices were EXTREMELY reasonable, as you can see from the menu I attached as a picture here. Be aware, due to NC law, you cannot consume growlers on premises!! Each cider we tried had a vibrant character and flavor of its own. We were particularly fond of the pear cider. It had just a freshness and flavor that was not overpowering but still just very enjoyable. I would really recommend sampling out a lot of the meads! This is a type of drink that I was not personally as familiar with, so it was really a treat to explore and understand the different types of flavors that could be achieved here. Most importantly, we thought that the service here was just spectacular. There was one gentleman tending the bar, but the way that he dealt with us, with kindness and with great recommendations, you would have thought that we were the only ones there (when in fact there were quite a few people!). There was a good amount of outdoor seating. Definitely put this on the map when you are making a trip to the area. read more

I did enjoy the Viking Blood and would recommend that above the other flavors I tried. There was a slight Mountain View over the industrial buildings where this business is located. However, I wish I would have opted to go to the town center for the ambiance and perhaps some sweeter drinks. read more

We stopped in here recently while touring breweries and cideries in the region. Staff was super friendly, but interior is not dog friendly, so we sat outside. They have a flight where you can taste through all of the ciders and the meads (which are carbonated), providing a nice variety of options to share. Most everything was on the dry end, and I wasn't a huge fan - but some of the fruit options were pretty good and worth trying. The bathroom situation is pretty weird. They don't have public restrooms inside their shop, but they do in the greater building. So you enter the building to the left of the shop and wander a creepily empty warehouse for a long while until you reach a pretty creepy restroom. Honestly felt uncomfortable going all the way back there by myself - pretty odd! read more

Their meads are much too yeasty for me. Their ciders lack balance of flavors. The atmosphere leaves much to be desired. The bar was uncomfortable to say the least at 80degress or more. My favorite mountain place to visit. We chose to stay on Black Mountain so we could be closer. We come every summer and are never disappointed. Enjoyed our stop here, just as the taproom was opening on a Saturday. Husband and I each had a flight of two ciders and two meads--so 8 of the 11 offerings on the menu. The bartender was friendly but not intrusive at all. My favorite was the El Draque mead--inspired by a mojito--just super bright and refreshing. I also really enjoyed the Basilisk cider, with basil notes. Husband enjoyed the coffee mead and the flagship cider. Each flight of 4 was $11. They also offer flights of 6 for $15. I will say that this place is buried pretty deep in a kind of industrial park (along with Pisgah Brewing) and definitely doesn't emphasize aesthetics--it's a small room without a specific "look," and there is some outdoor seating as well. But that didn't negatively affect our experience in any way. Would return here if we found ourselves in the area--seems like the menu changes frequently. read more

I'm a pretty big cider drinker and I've been to Superstition Meadery in AZ which I've observed seems to be carried in some places all the way here in the south so it must be good. That being said, I was incredibly disappointed with the ciders and the mead here. We got a flight and it all tasted pretty much the same - watered down cider, some with obvious flavors sticking out like ginger. The flavors didn't even mesh well together, I almost get the feeling that they brewed a big batch of plain ole watery cider and added flavors after the fact. The mead even only tasted slightly different than the cider, nothing like the thick sweet mead I have had before. read more

The sour cherry cider is truly sour, and the lavender has obvious notes of lavender. The flight is a good way to try a lot of different drinks! I'm glad I came here with someone who knew where the place is because the location is certainly not an easy find! Tucked away in an industrial-ish area that also houses pisgah brewing and dynamite roasting (among others), Black Mountain Ciderworks operates a tasting room that is both small in size and taps. They offer bar seating, an indoor couch and high top table, and a few outdoor tables. There are three ciders and three meads on tap. If you're like me and came in to try different ciders, you may be slightly underwhelmed by the limited selection. They have a wide variety of ciders that they make which they list on their webpage, but these are cycled in and out. The bartender working the night I came in was friendly and gladly let us sample what was on tap. My friends and I found the Nuncio to have an unpleasant sour-vinegary taste. Two of us ordered the Cape Fear (apple + muscadine) and the other ordered the third cider on tap, the Basilisk (basil, honey, fennel). The consensus among the three of us was that the Cape Fear was just 'OK,' but not very flavorful. Standing in contrast to that was the Basilisk which perhaps had too much flavor. In small amounts, the Basilisk offers a very interesting flavor profile, with strong basil notes and subtle licorice flavor. In larger amounts, however, the flavor was not as complementary, taking away from what should be an underlying cider flavor. Because these guys rotate their taps often, I'd be interested in returning to give their other ciders another shot. From my experience, however, other cideries in the Asheville area seem to be a bit more promising. read more

Where to start...OMG. This is cider that blows away what we buy in restaurants and breweries anyplace else. It was crisp and the sample flight ran the gamut of sweet to dry for all pallets. Being a dry pallet person I quickly gravitated to the non lavender or apple juice flavors, but noticed the locals who apparently liked the others. There was something for everyone without question. Small and homey place, almost feel like you are lost pulling in, but well worth the winding around the back of the building; it's just past the brewery and right next to the tabernacle singing hymns just wishing you into cider-bliss. The owners work the store and share the logic behind their shop complete from knowing where the apples come from to how they make the flavors. Costs are amazing compared to cider in restaurants and the quality/taste is ten-fold better....and all gluten-free. Hands down, the best place I stopped in Black Mountain. read more

What a lousy place to celebrate a birthday! It is very tiny and the bartender on my friends birthday was not pleasant at all! Jan 19,2020. The mead tasted like booze not wine and same with the cider. I have had mead before and it made my toes curl... it was like ambrosia in liquid form but this the two I tried, and asked for their sweetest mead, just tasted like booze and when your expecting a honey flavor and a get strong boozy flavor instead, it's disappointing! Also the bathroom is a few doors down along a long desolate brewery hallway... I Don't suggest a woman alone to walk it... Just don't recommend this place! We went to Pisgah Brewing beforehand and left for the mead and cider I wish we had stayed at Pisgah Brewing... the bartender there was at least happy and greeting her customers with JOY! Update: Apparently the owner could care less that my friend felt uncelebrated, that 'NO' they were not upfront about the dryness of the mead and the atmosphere was definitely dry as well... I will go to Pisgah next time I'm in the area... we were having fun there and as we were celebrating a birthday,we should of stayed where the atmosphere was FUN... DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOUR LOOKING FOR A BAR, no fun and boozey mead!!! And what an ugly retort from the owner... tells you so much, doesn't it? read more

I love this place so much. It is tucked away behind Pisgah and is not always open at the same time. The hours are actually kind of random due to being next door to some type of church, the laws or rules prohibit them to be open certain times and days I guess? Anyway...that's what I gathered after speaking with the staff. The ciders here are extremely unique and absolutely delicious. I have loved every one of them. The flights are the best way to go. They make everything there. They sometimes have little food sampling as well. The staff is nice and sometimes, depending on who you get, will walk you through the process of making the cider and explain a lot in detail. This is a must visit when going through Black Mountain. read more

It was our good luck that BlackMountain Ciderworks was in top 15 places to visit while in Black Mountain via a google search! My husband and I are newbies to the cider world and are enjoying the hunt for delicious, hand crafted ,dry hard ciders and this place did not disappoint! In addition to scrumptious ciders they also produce marvelous mead! The owner and his staff are very friendly and happy to answer questions about their lines. Whoa! Good golly! Dude. I like Cider! Great family run business. With as much time as I spend at Pisgah Brewing, I'm shocked I haven't been here sooner. It's just next door! My recommendation is to get a flight. Most of the Ciders have some notes of herbs, fruits or honey. I prefer more simple cider recipes, like the POMONA!
