Steve Wall is dishonest and unprofessional. He took money from me under false pretenses and now…read morerefuses to give it back (and he has a pattern of doing this -- check his reviews here and on Google). My husband and I needed several projects completed on our chimney and fireplace. Steve told me he'd be able to take care of all of them and could give me estimates, but only if I mailed him a check for a $250 chimney inspection which was a precondition for the other jobs. I mailed him the check. He became unresponsive to messages for several weeks, then suddenly reappeared and did the inspection. Then he disappeared again with the money without providing an inspection report and he stopped responding to my messages, with the exception of one phone call during which he told me (falsely) that he was planning to go back to the house a second time to get me estimates. It gradually became clear that he had never had any intention of doing the projects we'd actually contacted him for. Over 5 weeks later, and only after I demanded a refund, he coughed up a report -- typed into an email without even a date of inspection or a single photo. We now need to pay someone else for a 2nd chimney inspection because multiple other professionals have said they can't use the report he produced, as it doesn't contain basic information that's standard even in a level 1 chimney inspection report. Amazingly, his report concludes that our fireplace is in good working order, despite the fact that I told him that the fireplace doesn't work and our house inspector also noted that in our home inspection report. If he thinks it's right that we paid him for this report, maybe he also thinks we should trust, and pay, a mechanic who claims he inspected our shocks and says they look great when in fact they're drowning in oil. He never acknowledged my request for a refund and never acknowledged the many ways he lied throughout the process. In fact, when he finally emailed me the report, he actually ended his email with "I've retired from the chimney game." Not "I'm transitioning into retirement soon and I understand that you wouldn't have hired me if I'd been upfront with you that I can't do the work, oh and also I realize I've wasted 8 weeks of your time while I led you to believe I was getting around to doing your projects, so I'm refunding you out of basic decency," but "I've retired." After nearly 8 weeks of him lying to us, ignoring us, and wasting weeks of the precious time we had for repair projects before moving in, this was the cherry on top. As though he hadn't said to me only a few weeks prior that he would be returning to the house to take another look at the projects, with no mention of retirement! Dealing with Steve has been disheartening and gross, and I don't wish this experience on any other first-time owners who are just looking for trustworthy help to turn their house into a home. I'd like to report him to his licensing board (his website clearly states he's a licensed contractor) but guess what -- the NC licensing board has no record of him. He's responded to a previous similar complaint (Better Business Bureau) by saying that his work is quality and he has satisfied customers. My work is quality too. I have satisfied clients. But if I got someone to pay me money for an assessment on the pretense that I'd stick around to provide services that the assessment was a precondition for, and it then turned out I never intended to stick around, my client would deserve their money back. Not because I'd be contractually obligated to refund them, and not because it would mean my work was of poor quality. Because it would be what's right, and I'd be in the wrong.

Due to the challenges of the slope of terrain and height of the chimney this was a difficult job. Steve did a great job - chimney is fixed and has proved to be water-tight after several incredibly heavy rain storms. I highly recommend Steve Wall!
