The size of the seating area alone is worth taking a coffee break, from cozy couches, to hi-top tables and chairs to bar stools at the front of the shop to outdoor patio seating, there's something for everyone. The music is coffeehouse-ish without being Starbucky. The décor is classy and representative of the area from the antique coffee clock to the display of local wood scraps to the educational posters of what makes coffee what it is to the super neat drawings and antique cameras. Yes, their design team is on point. Alright, so enough about that stuff, how about the coffee? OH MY GAWD! They have all the basics, including a drip coffee that you can order as a monthly club (nice play on the local wine club scene) but what stole my heart was the lavender latte. Oh heavenly beans and floral accents how you danced your magic dance on my tongue... mmmhmm. I have had some good coffee in my life, being from Oregon and recently transplanting to the Capital of coffee in Sacramento and I dare say Black Oak may rival some of the best cups I have ever been blessed to experience. This cup was creamy and full flavored with just a light and refreshing hint of lavender. Why has nobody ever thought of this before?! Did not have as good an experience here the second time around. The espresso was a bit sour and the cookie was hard. When the news came that Coffee Critic was closing, it hit me like a ton of Sumatra Roast. So many memories were behind those doors and trying to deal with the ending of the era was just too much to grasp. But it wasn't long before someone came by and saw it's potential and purchased the space. But if you're expecting that this is the rebirth of Coffee Critic you can forget about it. The new owners are set on creating a new brand. And so far it seems as if they are doing a pretty good job of it. No longer is this a place where you can come in buy holiday gifts or handfuls of candy. No more tamales and that cheesy giant television set is long gone. There is now a new interior which in my opinion is even more inviting. The metal tables have been replaced by large leather sofas. There is a small bar near the counter where you can sit and sip your afternoon away. And of course, free wifi but make sure to ask for the password as it does change often. The coffee is excellent, but I am still trying to adjust to the menu. Yesterday missed out on the Mayan mocha and went back again this morning to sample, but they were closed. Hey, it was 7:55AM! It's morning time! What gives? If you're looking for an iced coffee drink, the menu here falls short. But they have promised to add more. This will certainly be welcomed as summers in Ukiah are brutally hot. read more

Probably the most hipster coffee shop I've ever walked into. It's all muted colors and soft chatter when you walk in, along with the wafting smell of amazing coffee. They have drinks here that I have never seen anywhere else, and I wish they were closer so I could take advantage of such a unique menu! Boyfriend ordered the Lovers Lane Latté, which features local wildflower honey and is garnished with bee pollen, while I got the Spiced Brown Sugar Latté with has a hint of vanilla and is garnished with cinnamon. I absolutely LOVED my drink. Sweet, but not overly so, and the cinnamon added a nice little overall spice to the palette. I wasn't as big of a fan of Boyfriend's drink, but I think you have to really like the taste of the bee pollen garnish to fully appreciate the entire drink. Love this place! My bf and I were in town for a few days and came here for an afternoon pick me up. Tons of tables and seating options for working, reading, studying, or just hanging out. Parking is easy, street parking or a small private lot. It's in the middle of the downtown Ukiah area which makes it a popular and convenient place to go. They sell whole beans in addition to espresso drinks, coffee and tea. I got the lavender latte, which was amazing! Just the right amount of sweetness (for me, but I have a sweet tooth), smooth espresso shots and beautiful micro foam (sorry, former barista! I appreciate the small things) and even a few lavender sprinklings on top. My bf ordered the citrus hibiscus cooler which is hibiscus tea, fresh citrus + peel, and lemonade.. so refreshing that we ordered a second one to share. We felt right at home here, we easily spent an hour just chatting and enjoying our surroundings. The baristas were all super friendly and helpful when I asked for a recommendation. The interior is clean and well managed. Bathrooms are clean, which is ALWAYS a plus. I hardly ever give 5 stars but I feel that Black Oak Roasters definitely deserves it. read more

I kept forgetting to check in when I was in town bit i wanted to leave yall a review. I was visiting ukiah from Aug 12-15, Black Oak was highly recommended by my brother who frequents quite often, knowing I was a Bux fanatic from Los Angeles, he said Black Oak would blow me away. Well, the first day I arrived we went in, first thing I ordered was an Iced Lovers Lane Latte, VERY GOOD. Never had anything quite like it. I sucked it down in no time flat. Next i tried the Iced Lavender Latte, another winner, the lavender gave it a little something special. The next day, Thursday I had the Iced Spiced Brown Sugar Latte, this was probably one of my faves along with the Lovers Lane. Then Friday, i tried the Iced Dulce de Latte, just sweet enough, i couldn't complain about that one either. Saturday, i was hungry as well so I tried the breakfast burrito, YUM! AND THE Chai Milkshake, i love Chai...again very good. The staff was great, only wish I could recall their names. I asked numerous questions about all the drinks and hey answered all my questions wih a smile, they were very helpful and friendly, made me feel right at home. I have to admit, I wish their was a Black Oak in Los Angeles, but when I do visit Ukiah in October i guarantee you i will be back to wok my way through the menu once again. Best coffee I've had north of San Francisco. The pre-made drip (dark roast) was fresh and perfect (I'm used to Peet's back at home). My wife's latte was just as rich and even better than her usual at Peet's. Nice ambiance (mellow 70's music at the moment), quick and friendly service and plenty of seating and parking - even on a busy Sunday morning. If you have young ones, they even have some toys for the kids. Bottom line: Highly recommended. Even if you have to travel a couple miles off the highway to get here. read more

The interior is spacious and well appointed with artwork, community announcements, and multiple spots for relaxation, work, social media making, and road trip resting. I moved away from Ukiah ~15 years ago, but was in town last weekend for a wedding. I was saddened to see that The Coffee Critic was gone when I headed that way to grab my morning coffee, but curious to see what Black Oak Coffee was about. I tried their dark roast, Black Bart, and was pleasantly surprised at how smooth and delicious it was! I mentioned it to a couple of friends later that day and everyone only had good things to say about this place. I've had a monthly subscription to this place for awhile now. It's legit one of the most consistently solid single-origin brands I've had -- and that's coming from downtown Chicago, home to Intelligentsia, Dark Matter, Passion House, Metric, and many many more (including La Colombe's outside Philly facility). In addition to great coffee, their customer service is excellent and their shipping is super fast. The farms they support are also super cool and even though I love shopping local (aka Chicago), I have to keep my subscription to this top-notch, social-driven, excellent coffee shop. This is an amazing place.. The atmosphere is always lively. It can get very busy for lunch, so if you are coming during the midweek lunch rush you can expect a bit of a wait, but it's worth it. The bread and cookies are excellent as are the sandwiches. The No Contest is the best sandwich in Ukiah, no contest!
